View Full Version : A plea to use the advanced search function before starting a thread.

I've noticed quite a few new threads on old subjects popping up lately. I'm not discouraging folks from posting but much of the information you seek has already been discussed. It's much easier on bandwidth, the mods, etc if we all check out past topics before posting new questions. It's fine to post in the original thread and it brings that thread back to the top of Today's Posts/New Posts for new discussion. I use the Search function as follows:

Click Search
Click Advanced Search
Type my word(s) for search in the Keyword box
Search by "Title Only" first then search "Entire Posts"

Again, I'm not discouraging posting but hoping to help everyone find the information they need sooner and keep everything cleaner.

and an actual serious answer:

Dedicated sever, Mirrored drives, Dual core processor with lots of ram, and though not really serch performance related... 1000mb dedicated bandwidth = no biggie for site performance so far.

I started to do this, and gave it up as not worth the effort- but it works:

An Excel spreadsheet with the cigar in one column and location in the next. Searchable by cigar or location.

What the hell I will wade in on the other side of the fence.

Let me first start off by saying I fully agree that search is your friend and that there is a ton of great information to be found by using the tool.

Let me flip the coin............this is a forum..........a centre for discussion and interaction not just a repository of useful (and useless) information. So if all new people ever did was use the search then very quickly there would be nothing on the new post page (a button I use about every 15 seconds) but banter and bomb updates............ok that is in the extreme but the point is still somewhat valid...........I think.

I also think that often if a question is brought up..................or re brought up (how is that for murder of the English language) that it may bring something new to the light of day or a different viewpoint than what might be embedded in search. In the grand scheme of things if we don't wish to respond to a question that has been posed time and time again we can easily move on to the next thread.

Now again I mentioned earlier I agree with search, I often use it to point out threads to people that may have missed it and tell them to go there for some great information.

Hmmmmmmmmmm seems to me I have posted something like this before............I should have searched it (tongue firmly planted in cheek)

I remember back at Louie's house we always said the Search is your friend.

IMHO - it is so much more useful to bring up a post if it addresses the same subject. It doesn't matter if you agree with what's written or not however it does place it within a certain context which I believe is most useful.

It is kind of fun to see what Mr. Klugman would have smoked on that desert Island 3 years ago, 2 years ago, etc...

I still vote pie over cake however YMMV!

This, however, is an excellent point. Plus, newbs (or others) will sometimes struggle with the "proper" definition of something and will search on a less than ideal term, consequently missing a lot of posts.

Somewhere in a dark corner, Avo Uvezian weeps quietly because no one on CA can run a search for his prized AVO XO cigar...

In lieu of changes to the CA search restrictions, you could use an advanced search at google of this site to find what you are looking for. The catch is that it will only search the public areas and the results are rarely up to the minute accurate.
