View Full Version : NC Davidoffs

People who know me know I smoke habanos pretty much exclusively... after a good amount of testing, I just seem to personally prefer them (there were many NC vs CC threads... I'm not looking to recreate that here as they never stay civil. ;) The only reason I even mention it is to preface what's next).
That said, these NC Davidoffs are off the friggin' hook. I'm smoking a #2 tubo right now and, in my personal opinion, it's just as good (if not better) than many of the CC's I have. This one's been sitting for probably a year and was given to me in the NC MAW by Patrick, I believe. Before, I posted a review (http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=27508) of a Mill Blend Lancero, which I also loved.
What the hell are they doing over there to make such damned good sticks?! This thing is truly a treat... very mild and flavorful. Too bad you need to sell body parts to buy boxes of them.
What are your opinions of the NC Davi line?

Best non-Cuban cigar line across the board. Price point is a bit restrictive but they make a heck of a product. :2

I think all of you have gotten fake Davidoffs, because the ones I have smoked have not been as you described and I know for a fact that mine were real.
I'm not saying the maker as a whole is bad, I do enjoy their Avo and Winston Churchill cigars, but the White Label Davidoff's have been pretty grassy tasting, to me at least.

Good to know...I might have to pick up one or two. Thanks for the heads up.

I remember thinking I should try one of these, and laughed when I saw what the local b&m was charging. still have yet to try one.
This pretty much sums up my thoughts on NCs. There are a few that I feel are just as good or better than some Cubans, but they usually also cost about 3x as much as your average CC.

I went to an event in Austin in June and picked up the Purp d'Oro line of Davidoffs. They were the first and only Davidoffs I've ever had and I really liked them. Thought it was a great line.

They are very consistent from one cigar to another in taste and construction. However the flavor is one noted and I prefer a melody. Especially at that price point.
Here is what I wrote almost 2 years and it remains the same today:
Not worth the money IMO. They are one dimensional to me. It's a good one dimension, but not $15 worth.
The Davidoff threads before that might help are found here:

Ahh but do you remember what you errrr wearing when you smoked it Greg?!
I've had one and I really liked it. But for the price to me it isn't something I'll knock myself out trying to get.

I got one recently in a PIF and have yet to light it up, this is probably one of 3 NCs other than Pepin stuff I own.

See Dan I knew you had taste :)
I've tried almost all of their products including most of the special editions. My favorite thus far was the Robusto Intenso, 2005's limited run. Absolutely phenomenal cigar. (And if anyone wants to part with some they've got left over let me know, bought the last one at my B&M about 6 months ago).
That being said not all of their sticks are perfect. The first Maduro robusto I tried blew my mind, so I went back and bought another. It sucked. Wouldn't stay lit and what I got tasted ashy. That's very atypical for Davidoff as their smokes are usually consistent if nothing else, but I wanted to be balanced here.

I am a huge fan of the Millennium and Puro D' Oro lines, as mentioned above the prices are harder to justify but it often doesn't stop me.

As were mine... here's the thing, NC Davis are SUPER GRASSY when you first get them... every one I've had has been like that.
Let one sit for a minimum of 6 months... a year or two is better. Totally different cigar.

The Mills are good and I haven't seen the D oro's yet... there's no Davidoff dealer near me... closest one is, I believe, Albany (3.5 hours drive).

I was fortunate enough to get one last time I went to Vegas (I go there 2-4 times a year but always forget the davidoff shop and end up at Casa Fuente). It was an outstanding cigar! If they weren't so bloody expensive it'd be a great smoke in the morning with coffee and Bailys

As far as white labels go, I've found that they are somewhat inconsistent from production batch to batch (I worked at a shop that sold white labels by the truckload). Generally, the lighter the wrapper, the smoother and more creamy they are, the darker wrappers needing a little more time to rest.
The #2 is one of the best cigars in the white label lineup, followed by the Millennium robusto. The downside is, they cost a lot, and they require some time to rest.
There's one catch to Davi white label cigars...they smoke best if they're stored between 63-65% RH and then dry boxed for a day before smoking. I don't say this out of personal preference, but from the experience of smoking several hundred over a couple years.
For the record, I'm not a fan of 90% of the white label stuff (I like a rougher cigar).

If I had too pick one cigar that I had to smoke everyday for the rest of my life, the Davidoff Millenium Blend Churchill would be way out front of everything else...LOVE that cigar...everyone has been impeccably well made, fantastic flavor profile...I could go on forever...I say that after having smoked through many boxes of Davidoff product.

I have never had the chance to smoke one, and just based on the price point, it will likely be a long time before I get the chance.
It is hard for me to justify spending so much on a cigar, but I guess if they are really this good, maybe it will be a good smoke for when I graduate next year. I have been thinking I would like to pick up something special for the occasion.

I guess I need to revisit these. The thousand series I've had were grassy as mentioned above so maybe I need to get some to age. The Millennium blends I've has were just ok but again very young. I will say the Maduro Robusto I had, thanks to PapaJohn, was fantastic.

I hear ya Drew....I can think of many other great smokes a half the retail of this stick. I can't justify the extra cost.

You really need to sit on them for a time... it becomes a totally different cigar. I wanna try one at 5, 10, 20 years out... I wonder if they'll age as well as their habanos counterparts did.

Your correct, their are ton's of really great sticks out there for far less $$'s. But they are not Davidoff's and if you have the itch you will pay dearly to scratch it. Recently broke out a Davidoff Especial Seleccion 702, OMG it was wonderful.

Love Davidoffs, but of course for the price they are a rare treat.
The few I have had were pretty good. When my mother passed away last year I received her humidor from my dad which contained a davidoff among other sticks. Not sure how old it was but it was by far my favorite. If I had to guess, it was atleast four years old.
Yes, the price on some of them are a real kick in the pants.
I've been reading a little about Henke Kelner lately, and I'd like to try something of his. From what little I can find, if I want something medium to full bodied, it'll have to be a Davidoff. Or do any of their "lesser" brands have any of the features that Davidoff is noted for? There's not a whole lot said about Zino, Griffins, etc. around here.

There's some Avo stuff that gets into the medium range. I can't vouch for it, as I've only ever spent any time with the classic Avo line which is about as mild as they come.

I pretty much agree. I like both the Davidoff and WC lines very much. They come off as cedary/leathery to me which I really like.

The Winston Churchill cigars, the ones I mentioned as being one of the ones I enjoy, are in the dead set medium range.
I doubt anything coming from the Davidoff factories would be at the most barely scratching at full; they seem to favor flavor over body anyways.

The Zino line is light bodied, and cedary. It's not bad, but it's oh so one dimensional.

I'm surprised to hear so many people liking these. I've always heard the exact opposite before. I've tried the Millenium series with some age - the pc - and was blown away. I tried a fresher one - robusto - and it wasn't nearly as good. I also tried the Gran Cru and noted the grassy flavor and thought it might be better with some rest. Good to hear that should be true. I was gifted a Puro D'Oro - thanks Jimmy - but was letting it rest a little before trying. It's probably time as it sounds like this one doesn't need to age like the others.
For a real treat, the Diademas Finas is superb.

Came across a Puro d Oro Notables last week so I picked it up, smoked it tonight and have to say that I really enjoyed it. Not sure I will be stocking up on them but definitely worth the try.

Like srduggins I am kinda surprised to see so much love for davidoffs. On a few of the other boards I am on, people seem to hate on them quite a bit. So I have always stayed away from them.
I have only found one B&M that sells them near me, International tobacco in the king of prussia mall. I dont get down to the mall that often but when I get down there I like to stop in. Next time I am there I'll have to grab a few singles...

There are a lot of people who will love something while a lot that hate something. YOU need to decide for yourself, which is what is sounds like your gonna do!:tu
