Hopefully ya'll have heard about HBO's new series, Boardwalk Empire, premiering next month on the 19th. Its a mafia series about Atlantic City in the Prohibition Era.

One of my favorite actors, Steve Buscemi is the lead rule. Terence Winter, from the Sopranos, is the Creator, Executive Producer and Writer and Martin Scorsese is the Director and another Executive Producer.

The show looks to be awesome and I can't wait :banger

Here's a link to the show's website:

Most of the filming was done blocks from where I live. They actually built an entire full size city block set...pretty cool, can't wait to watch it!

About time HBO got back into the stellar series fight. Showtime has been blowing them out of the water since the Sopranos ended. Weeds, the Big C, etc are all great fun.

This one looks like a return to the ring. :tu

Got to be honest, I enjoyed this, but I'm still waiting for the story to start. This episode felt a lot more like it was just setting the scene, introducing some characters and maybe planting some seeds that will grow into a story. I enjoyed it for that and I'll keep watching but I'm still waiting to be pulled in by characters that resonate. For the moment, I think they spent too long dwelling on the little details, the costumes, the billboards, the cars, the store signs, etc. and not enough focusing on who these people are and why I should care about them.

Both Steve Buscemi and Scorsese are awesome and have earned the benefit of the doubt from me, though the smaller, long form of TV is very different from the larger short form of cinema.

I agree to ur basic point. they definitely were establishing characters, spending time briefly on their backgrounds (stressing Jimmy was in WWI etc). And with an era different than our own, u need to get the sense of the times in the minds of the views right away. The first episode of the Sopranos is very similar. :2

Somewhere I have an old theater program from about 1920 that has a full-page ad for Colosimo's restaurant on the back. The featured performer is the girl Colosomo ditched his wife for--an act that, it's been said, contributed to his getting whacked by Capone.

Sounds like "Big Jim" Colosimo...see my prior comment.

Colosimo was a major early Outfit boss in pre-Prohibition Chicago...about 1920-21 he dumped his longtime (Italian) wife for a young (non-Italian) singer at his restaurant, which outraged many in the Chicago underworld and opened up an opportunity for his longtime second-in-command, Johnny Torrio, to remove him and take his place.

To do the job, Torrio brought in a young man from Five Points, Brooklyn...named Alphonse Capone.

This show looks great, good scenery, great costumes, incredibly detailed period depictions. What I'm missing is a story to pull me in and keep me interested. I just don't have a reason to care about any of the characters right now. After three weeks lets go through em Jimmy - He's decided he wants to be a gangster and has just abandoned his common-law wife and son. Nucky - he likes to sleep with showgirls, is move liquor and is free with his money - only slightly redeeming qualities I've seen are that he deals fairly with everyone and takes on charity cases. The sheriff brother is an ass and is only still around because of Nucky. They can't seem to decide what to do with the irish widow, one week she is coming to Nucky for help, next week refusing it, pretending to be too proud to take it. All the remaining characters are caricatures of mobsters, showgirls, black leaders, and businessmen. I'll give it a few more weeks, to see if there are some more interesting developments, but so far I just see a number of very good actors (Buscemi, Gretchen Mol and Michael K. Williams mainly) wasting their time on weak material.

The Sopranos worked because Tony was an engaging character. We didn't like him, weren't meant to. But we wanted to know more about him, just as we wanted to know more about his crew and his family. We wanted to see just how far he would go, and how low he would sink. Boardwalk Empire is missing the human depth that was the center of The Sopranos.

10-05-2010, 07:56 AM
The Sopranos was likely the last of the great tv or movie mob
depictions. Ive been going to AC, as we call it in Philly, since i
was 2 yrs old, before the casinos.
I actually was the parking lot attendant next to the Ritz
as a summer job after my freshman yr. in college.
Empire is showing a snapshot of prohibition that isnt normally
talked about. How many of us knew AC played such an intergral
part in liquor then. Nucky was in the right place at the right
time, and he knew what to do with it.
I predict the girl in the dress shop becomes his girlfriend.

spot on from what i saw. I think Jimmy's mother has something up here sleeve in regards to Luciano.

The last episode was really good IMO. They are doing a great job mixing in the historical events of the times, no matter how nasty, with the plot development: prevalence of the KKK throughout America in the 20s, Bolshevik Revolution in Russia, debate about the League of Nations, Jim Crow laws etc. I'm hoping next they'll show a reunion of Civil War vets :tu

as a summer job after my freshman yr. in college.
Empire is showing a snapshot of prohibition that isnt normally
talked about. How many of us knew AC played such an intergral
part in liquor then. Nucky was in the right place at the right
time, and he knew what to do with it.

Just finished watching the latest episode. It was awesome!!

Nucky is becoming more complex w/some childhood stories and a demeaning father. Best work so far though is the treatment of the vets from "The Great War". They are doing an excellent job showing how out of place and psychologically impacted from the war the young vets were, making them the "Lost Generation". The Phantom of the Opera guy (Richard?) is BAD@SS!!!

Hey, I'm just happy that so far they've avoided all surgically enhanced women so far. Sorry ladies, but the equipment you were born with is and will always be so much more attractive than the bolt-ons far too many hollywood women seem to get these days.

In any case, should be very interesting when Jimmy finds out who his wife was actually screwing around with. And, while I laughed at how over the top the two pistols coming with "How'd you know I drive a Packard?", the intensity of the moment was great, as was the followup - "I wasn't going to, but you kinda talked me into it."

Only two more episodes this season, right? The preview for next week was cut off by my DVR.

This was one of my favorite episodes in this show. Good progression on all the major story lines. Margaret left, no idea where she's gone yet. Jimmy reconnected a little with his dad, and we found out who he was, as well as some additional developments with his mother and wife. The wife just pisses me off. At least Margaret and the mom are presented as strong females, who know what they want and are willing to take risks to get it. Interesting that they choose to present that behaviour in two regular characters who practice one version or another of the oldest profession. The wife is just annoying, blowing whichever way the wind blows, taking the easiest path. Jimmy knows it, the only question is what does he plan to do about it. No Chalky this week, but I think we'll be seeing more of him next week. And Richard, the tin mask guy, is awesome, asking Nucky if he wants the families of those guys killed in Philly. First the mother, then the sisters, then the dentist. Delivery on that line was priceless.

You're correct. Except if the game is boring and no one is scoring, a few good fights will pick things up a bit. Not saying it make or breaks it but it definitely brings up some excitement in a non-exciting game. The game can still suck sure but at least there would be a highlight or two.

In your language say you're smoking a Gurkha, you immediately want to forget about it. But what if 2 draws in you see 5 sluts take off their shirts? Still a bad cigar but hey.....it was an experience with some highlights/excitement, no?

This episode really was about showing the dynamics of the characters. It was classic format for one of the last episodes of any drama: leave ya w/a few cliff hangers and have the characters at a crossroads.

Tying in Harding's "Return to Normalcy" speech w/Margaret and Nucky getting back together was brilliant. My favorite line of the night though: "Woodrow Wilson, that Southern son of a b*tch" :r

You are right as ususal Admiral! From IMDB:

In a closing montage while Eddie Cantor sings for the celebratory crowd, we see Van Alden sitting alone and tearing up. We see Eli, the Commodore and Jimmy plotting something while Gillian quietly sips a drink. Lansky and Luciano pull another whiskey heist, with Lucky shooting a kid who'd just taken payment from Lansky for a truckload of liquor. Nan sits alone and puts on the ring she found in the cake, smiling dreamily. Rothstein sighs as he talks on the phone, and Eddie counts stacks of cash. Angela sits at home in an empty dining room.

You know, everybody was saying how they didn't like the finale...but I really enjoyed it. We saw a lot of character development from the first episode to the finale, and I think the finale really was a nice chapter end to a lot of journeys the different characters were taking. And yes, as people have said, I think they've set themselves up for a GREAT second season and possibly more.

I finally watched the finale yesterday and was not disappointing in the least. One thing I have found about some of my favorite shows is that the finale's are often nothing spectacular, but they set the plot and characters up for season 2. That is exactly what happened here and I think season 2 is going to be spectacular.
