Last night Whole Foods called to ask me to come in and interview to be a Meat Cutter.
I've never been to an actual job interview.
Should I wear a tie for an interview as a Meat Cutter?
Tips?
(please spare the "meat" jokes for later, haha)

That is way cool IMO!!! It is sort of becoming a lost art!
As far as advice goes, I would wear a tie, but not overdone. Then just be yourself. Thoughts and prayers sent!!

Apron & big knife. Are they union at WF?
You're a lucky man to a meat cutter there. How's your colesterol?
In all seriousness. I would would wear a suit, it is never overkill and shows respect. Bring a pad of paper and pen with a couple bullet points you want to ask, even if you already know your questions.
When they ask you a question, paraphrase or re-say their question into your answer. At the end, make sure to "ask for the job" should you want it. It is never implied you want a job, you have to ask. Say the interviewer's first name often. Everyone likes to hear their name.
If the conversation takes a casual tone, remain professional and do not slip from being that perfect candidate.
Good luck!

Meat Cutter? WTF...what happened to Butcher? Is that the PC term for "you are a butcher but damned if we will actually pay you that well"?
I worked in a Butcher shop in High School. High End local place that did have ties as part of our uniforms, under aprons of course, but I didn't interview with a tie and I don't think anyone else did either.
It is, or was, a good paying honest blue collar job. Smoke breaks out back, eating sandwiches made outa the goofs. LOL
I'd say wear good clothes, button shirt, no tie.
Tips:
Be yourself

Being someone that is doing the interview process right now too, I'd say wearing a tie is always a good idea even if it's not what the "uniform" would be. I'd do the nice pants, button down shirt and a tie. I'm not a dressy type by any means but I make sure that I "clean up nicely" for important situations and a job interview is one of those.
Good luck and I agree with everyone else, be yourself!! I always hated the people that would come in to interview and act one way and then come to work acting and saying the complete opposite. I want them to hire me for who I am and what I do, not for the answers that they want to hear. But then again, I don't like to act, so I am who I am.

+1 for some great tips ... uh, so to speak
I agree with the you can't overdress. I sat in in the interviews we held recently to hire a person for an opening we have at our EMS Service, and I couldn't believe that most of the candidates had on jeans. I would never go to an interview for any job wearing jeans.

It's Whole Foods...I would wear a tie, but it should be a free-range, organic-polyester tie, with moonstone and hematite accents. :r:r
Seriously, I think a suit might be overkill. I would go with a button down shirt and tie with khakis. As stated, take paper and pen for notes and be yourself (not your mean self, but the sweet and kind Darrell we all know and love).
I talked to an HR rep about this not long ago because I was hiring 12 people for an entry level position. She hires regularly for her company. She said that you should dress one level above what is common attire for the position. If you were normally going to wear business casual then wear a shirt and tie. If you would normally wear a shirt and tie then wear a suit for the interview. I had a few people show up in suits that were just not right for a job interview. I would recommend just a shirt and tie.

Darrell, you only get one chance to make a first impression. I interview a lot of potential employees, if they don't show up dressed appropriately I write them off with no chance of getting the job regardless of their experience! I think you should dress your BEST regardless of what the job is.
Best of luck with your interview, I understand that Whole Foods is a great place to work.

I was a Chef for six years prior to joining the AF. Wear a tie, present yourself as a professional and blow the socks off of those tree huggin' bastages. Good luck, and wear a tie! I have been a recruiter/headhunter for many years, and you'd be suprised at some of the things people wear. T-shirts and jeans with a ball cap on backwards? Didn't even bother to interview. Thanked them for the time as soon as they sat down across my desk. Quite a sad state of affairs. This was not a one time deal. Happened many times.

I would wear a shirt and tie with a pair of dress pants or at a minimal a nice pair of pants and a colored shirt tucked in. I always say you can't go wrong with going formal to an interview unless of course your interviewing for a job digging ditches. How you present yourself for an interview says a lot about you IMHO. Darrell,
Good luck.
I don't think one can ever look over dressed for a job interview.
You only get one chance to make a first impression and why not make it the best possible.
Relax during the interview.
Get friends to do a mock interview and surprise you with questions.
Be prepared for the often asked, "what is your worse quality/trait".
Most screw that up. Turn a negative to a positive. Tell them your worst trait is you seek perfection and recognize not all things will be perfect but you can have a blast trying.
Speak of experiences where you have shined.
Good luck!!!
Whatever you do, don't mention your "meat packing" days.:r:r:r

I hope so. All I know is I felt grossly over dressed.
Although the manager walked up, shook my hand and said "Damn, looking sharp!"
The two guys before me were dressed for success as well, just not success outside of slinging crack on the corner.
Candidate #1 wore a flannel shirt that was a little short with some torn up jeans.
Candidate #2 wore a black tee and some blue jeans that were rolled under like some kinda Mexican gang banger.

OOPS, my bad, I was a lil slow, lol.
----------------------------------
I agree with this, because although the SUIT has not gone out of style for interviews, it is
not always necessary or appropriate for all job types, or rather it could be said that in
some job types, the interviewer would not be inclined to use that against you provided you
wore slacks, a dress shirt and a tie. However, IF YOU LOOK GOOD in a suit, there is no harm
in wearing one.
I don't. At least not at my current weight. I say keep good eye contact and I agree with small
talk, sometimes it is a trap, do not go casual yourself. Sir and Ma'am, never 'yeah' and if
you find yourself stuck for a work, 'uh' is a killer. Simply slow down or stop and compose yourself.
If 'uh' or 'you know' and the new death word, 'like' pop up in your conversation, you
should slow way down and think about what you are doing. It is called in the speech biz a
'verbalized pause', and that's what it is, a pause. So instead of verbalizing it, just pause.
The eternity in your head is actually a very short time, lol.
pnoon
08-24-2010, 02:15 PM
And they were the ones who were in and out in 5 minutes.

Skip the tie. It's overkill, I've been 100% at job interviews 7/7. I ALWAYS wear slip on dress shoes, my nicest jeans and a button up shirt untucked. Comb your hair, shave and success. Overdressing will show that you're desperate and have no confidence. If you smoke, DON'T before hand. Once they hire you, they won't care but at the interview it's off putting.
Seems you overdressed, Ah well. Good luck anyways man!

After you get hired, you should grow the King Leonidas type beard from 300.
Whole Foods is like Publix, but organic. Seeing as they get a lot of applicants, and they also scout for potential growth, dressing professionally probably is in your favor.
But also, seeing as you're former Armed Forces, they'd be jerks not to hire you. If I were hiring and I had to choose between two sloppy dudes and a someone well dressed who also was in the Air Force... uh yea.

What kind of jobs have you applied for? I would never dream of walking into an interview with my shirt un-tucked. Over dressing does not show desperation it shows respect. The only thing that shows lack of confidence is when you act as so.

Anything under $15 an hour and I'm not wearing a tie. At a certain point overdressing does show desperation and lack of confidence...say you apply at mcdonalds......yeah....walmart...yep. Certain jobs all you need to do is walk in dressed decently and be very confident. This has been my case every time. Of course I'm 24 and haven't applied for any job over $30,000 a year.

Hello Darrell and I hope all went well at your interview today with WF'.
I just saw this thread this afternoon and it appears you had loads of great advise early on before the interview.
I would of added, know something about the company. In essence, go to their web site and find out about the origin of WF, where are they at now, and where are they going in the future with the business. There's much knowledge on a companies web site to take into an interview. Because, one of the questions that any company will ask you is "What do you know about our company?" and "Why don't you tell us something about Whole Foods from your knowledge of our company." This is the chance to really shoot your wad and impress them about your knowledge of their company.
And as been mentioned before, and regardless of the wage, salary of the position, there is nothing wrong about wearing a suit and tie to your interview. Hair cut and clipped fingernails and looking well groomed is always part of the interview.
Being a vet is a big plus as well:tu
I just hope you answered well when asked how to use a left-handed meat cleaver buddy. Hope you didn't F that all to H***;)

This would be a great CAREER move for me. Cross your fingers.
Sounds Like A Better Position, Brother! Thoughts & Prayers Sent!:tu

Nice. My dad worked for USGS for like 25 years. Did you complete your KSA's?

Yes, it was part of the application process.
I have been a Federal / Military contactor a few times, but the KSA and whole process has kept me from ever trying to apply for FTE work for Govt.
My dad won a presidential management award and we met the Sec. of Interior along with President in the 70's. There is a lot of pride to the USGS.

No, there actually were not. He said he had 2 positions and 3 applicants.
I'm not sweating it. I have a job that's fine, I just wanted something different. I'll keep looking and hopefully USGS pans out. That's a great opportunity.

Reminds me of a friend of mine who used to do the hiring for a company...
It had little room for advancement, so he said he routinely chose inferior candidates because they were less likely to move on. Better candidates often were able to find superior jobs and would leave - necessitating additional hires and training.
From his company's perspective, it was more cost effective to hire people for whom the job would be a destination, not just a stepping stone. Seems plausible in this Whole Foods interview process.
Keep that positive attitude, bro! Hoping to hear good things soon. :tu

There's a lot of difference between Federal grade 07 and meat cutter. If you score an interview with them; you might wanna get that suit ready.
But I think you already figured that out.
EDIT: I don't know how it is in other places, but common interview attire in business is dark blue or charcoal suit; white shirt; neutral tie; and black or cordovan shoes with a matching belt. Think the upcoming movie the Adjustment Bureau.

I own several suits. One of them is always ready.
I'll get an interview, just waiting for them to call. :)

Fed doesn't do in person interview. Phone for the vast majority of applications, some are videotapped but that has to be in the job announcement when you apply, which it wasn't for Darrell's job.
