View Full Version : The Giants Lose A Hero

I am a bit surprised that no one else has posted this, and it needs to be noted. Bobby Thomson, the man who hit the "Shot Heard 'Round The World" to win the National League crown over the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1951, died Monday night at the age of 86. His three-run shot in the 9th off of Ralph Branca was the culmination of a tremendous charge the Giants made to end that season, as they overcame a late 13 1/2-game deficit by winning 37 of their last 44 games to force a playoff with their hated rivals, and prompted perhaps the most famous call in all of sports. I of course refer to Russ Hodges' ecstatic yell:

"The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant! Ohhhhhhh, baby!"

Rest in peace, Flying Scot.

Rest in peace Bobby. Baseballs most famous home run belongs to him.

I went online and read a few articles from the SF Chronicle to see if the Giants had, or have, any recognition ceremony planned, but found no mention of it. Does anyone know if they do have such plans, and if not, why?

And if not, they deserve whatever losing streak they're on.

R.I.P.

I'm sure he will be honored at the game tonight.
