View Full Version : Let's talk balls....GOLF balls

We've got such a large membership here of golfers, we should have a pretty diverse opinion on golf balls.
Now, I do like the Pro-V1's. Great confidence in them and they are terrific around the green. I don't have an absurdly high swing speed (112mph driver) so I'm probably not getting full advantage of these balls, but I still play well with them.
My other favorite (even over a Pro-V1) is the Callaway HX Tour when I can find them. I've played the new Callaway Tour-ix and don't see much difference.
I hate spending the $$ on these things though. There is one hole on my course, a long par 5 with OB left into a big weedy field. This is rattlesnake time around here so nobody really goes out looking for a lost ball and I can usually find at least 6-8 premium balls out there. My bag pockets are stuffed with lightly used pro-v's right now. lol.
Now, a little bit further down the ladder is the Titleist NXT, and NXT-Tour. Both of these are excellent balls I think. Not quite as soft off the putter, but still excellent performers.
One round, I ran across a brand new Top Flight XL Straight. Tee'd it up and shot 5 over on the front nine with it (good for me). So I ask myself, why do I prefer these high priced gems over the top rock that I just shot a 40 with? I have no answer to that, other than confidence over the ball knowing I can get it to stop reasonably close to where I want on the green.
What are your favorites?

I do like the Pro Vs. The new taylor made pentas are quite good. I have to say that my favorite golf ball is the nike one platinum. I always seem to score well when I use them on the golf course. LOL

I've been playing NXTs/Tours for the last few years. Great price point (I have a habit of losing balls) and great performance. Plus, you can find them just about anywhere. Golf Digest recently gave them Hot List designation for their price level.
Pro Vs are great balls, but at $4 per ball, not the best option for me.

Check out the TopFlite Gamer V2. It's a great all around ball. They can be had for less than $20/doz. and can get the job done.

I'm new to golf so any golf balls I hit are ok with me. I guess when i finally get my own set of clubs then I'll start to pick and choose the balls as well.

Living on the course and able to find thousands of balls a year, I can play just about anything for next to nothing save for some sweat and mosquito bites. :)
I like the Pro V1, but the DT Solo is quite comparable at less than half the cost new. Shot 84 with one this morning, as a matter of fact. :tu

I lose too many to play a premium ball, so I just go with the cheapest ball I can find that doesn't feel like a rock. Lately I've been bouncing between: Precept Laddie X, Top Flite D2 Feel, and Noodle S2F.

I just started playing, and I purchased the cheapest balls I could find. They happened to be used Pro V1's $9.99 for 15. I have some Nikes and Top Flights that I find on the course. I have only played 4 or 5 times (but I love it!). Yesterday I played and I only lost 1 ball...I just didn't want to go look for it.

I couldn't have said it better myself. NXTs are a great ball for the price and are what I have been using the past 2 seasons.

If I find any extra balls while playing I will only use them in the backyard. Golf balls have a limited life and usually are out of shape after a few good drives.

I've been playing the Nike Crush for the majority of this season, performs quite well for the price. Occasionally I'll spend the extra and buy a dozen Bridgestone B330-S when I feel the swing is on.

What are you hitting them with? :D
I don't hit them hard enough to notice any out of round since back in the balata days. I think the newer balls are much more resilient.
Their life is over when they become irretrievably lost. :D

I hit a lot of trees when I play. :r
IMO, of course the $45 a box balls feel better.... But in the end, I play better hitting Bridgestone e6's....

I play the Nike Mojo when I can still find them. I might have to pickup a sleeve of the Nike Crush to see how they play.

Unless you are a 10 or below handicap the ball really doesn't make that much of a difference. I would say for as long as you are using the same ball for every round that should be good enough, regardless of what it is. I always stick with the Nike Platinum tour balls because I get them for around $20/dozen during the golf shows in Michigan.

Used to play Pro V1s but have just recently switched to TM Pentas, noticed a small distance loss w/ the driver but love the great feel they have. That and the golf course I work on has them in the pro shop for much cheaper than the Pro V's w/ my employee discount lol

I love the e6, great ball for the mid to high handicapper IMO. To be honest, I think a lot of ppl that play the V1s, and other expensive 3 piece balls, are only playing them because of their name. When in reality they do not have the swing speed or consistency to be able to play this ball and it may even hurt their game over a cheaper but more forgiving ball.

I used to play the Pro V1, but during a round with a friend asked to try a Noodle LS that he played with. That was a couple years ago, I'll never spend the money on Pro V1's again.
NXT Tour - does everything a more expensive ball does, IMO.

Yeah, NXT Tours are pretty good. Someone on my home course keeps losing them, so I've had a chance to play quite a few. :r

Usually like to go with the Titleist ProV1X, but have been trying the Taylormade Penta recently. When I spend too much on cigars, I'll go with a Bridgestone or Nike.

+1 on the Bridgestone and Nike for a less expensive ball. My regular though is an NXT Extreme. You were spot on to know that without a rediculously high swing speed (like bigliver) you WON'T reap the benefits of that golfball. Not only that, but that great feel on the green means a softer cover. If you're like me you hit trees and the occasional cartpath, and that eats up a golfball. :2

Shot another round with the Penta over the weekend. I'm going back to the ProV1X. I didn't have any noticeable loss in distance, but the feel is just not what I am used to, especially off the putter.

Played The Big Bertha Diablo Yesterday. Great Distance & Adequate Spin For Around $25/ Dozen!:tu Has Basically The Same Dimple Design As The Callaway Tour Balls But Slightly Less Spin According To My Head Pro.

Played the Bridgestone E6's most of the past season. Up until this year I was still losing too many balls on a regular basis to be spending the extra $ on the upper tier Bridgestone balls.
Got a great deal on the B330 RX's and bought 5 boxes recently though.

I like the Maxfli Black Max. I rely more on distance than spin control, and these babies fly. The Pro V is a good all around ball, and great in tight, but if you're not spinning your wedges back with regularity, then you are just paying for the name. Like someone else said earlier, if you're not under a 10 handicap, then don't worry about spending big $$ on the ball.

I thought it was time to revive this old thread regarding golf balls...
For the last couple of months, I've been subscribing to email specials from the following:
http://www.knetgolf.com/clearance.html?utm_campaign=Extra+15%25+Off+Cleara nce&utm_source=hs_email&utm_medium=email&utm_content=22246094&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_SpljbBY3Go7_p5emPLVxBLS4AUthrC9gSHAjCStQ9M71t8wvU _JJozK0wFbgGRRlQD04nt3ZdAs40E_XaDqAFS110RQ&_hsmi=22246094
They appear to have a good selection of golf balls. I haven't made any purchases at this point, but thought I'd throw it out there to see if any of you have, and if so, how is the customer service and quality of product?
IMO, of course the $45 a box balls feel better.... But in the end, I play better hitting Bridgestone e6's....
....and I'm still playing e6's.
Played in a men's league this year, it was fun playing that consistent(minimum 1 time weekly).

For Golf Balls, I got hooked (no pun intended) on Slazenger a long time ago. Still like them, mainly because I don't get them confused with anyone elses.
BUT, for a great cigar holder while golfing, I think this is the best. It's called the Cigart. Sold on Etsy. I will try to post the link.

So for YEARS, played e6, went e12 soft today. Free hat, $24 vs $21, give them a try? Big move, I haven’t bought a ball(other than gift or the pup) not e6 for a LONG TIME.
Bonus stuff, pup getting into golf, I went a bit nuts on gear, but it’s been fun. She goes to the range(about 1000 yards from house) every chance she gets. Get her out as a 5 when we can. She hits the **** out of the ball and her short game(off green) is better than mine. Putter needs work.
Regripped my clubs today. Bought a 3 wood. 2020?
