View Full Version : Cutting cigars in half?

Searched but haven't found an answer, has anyone cut a cigar in half and then smoked it? I haven't tried it but I was wondering about it the other day when I wanted one of my Mya churchhills but didn't have an hour and a half to smoke it. I would imagine it would change the flavor profile some but I'm curious about other's experiences/opinions.

One time a friend offered to cut his cigar in half so we could share it. I stopped him however, because I figured it would unravel. I suppose if you could keep the cigar from falling apart, it would smoke just fine.

I've done it. I never heard you couldn't, all tho i'm sure their are it's disadvantages, such as the strength changing, a smaller stick, possible wrapper issues and burn problems.

I'll admit I had issues with the wrapper but nothing a finger in the right place couldn't fix.

I say do it, as long as it's not your Holy Grail of sticks and see for yourself weather you enjoyed both halves of not.

Why not just select a smaller stick?

The larger sticks are blended and rolled to be smoked as a whole.

get the double happiness (http://www.cigarsinternational.com/prodDisp.asp?item=CB-NIB1048-X&kc=CII210) if you want to cut cigars in half.

That is the funniest thing I have seen in a while. Yet I feel myself getting closer to the buy button on those.

Did they actually come with the boxes? It said "bundles" so I assumed the boxes themselves were not included or I might have ordered one or two.

don't know, had them shipped to a friend as CI doesn't ship to Europe. All I got is that 'they arrived' never asked if they were bundles or boxes. I missed the 'bundles' remark.

Well, that was what I was wondering, that makes sense. I may try it just because to see how the flavor and taste is, I really like those churchhills!

I do it with cheaper cigars, especially for 20-30 minute smokes at work. Can't afford to smoke a good PC everytime I want a quick smoke, but I do wish I had boxes of Angeles, 68's, and Boli PC's lying around. :)

I don't give a **** if a Tabacos Baez SF Toro unravels a bit. Tastes good, fits in my time schedule, and is cheap. I win.

I enjoy some of the brands in there but what I really wanted was the box. It's funny how CI doesn't ship internationally considering their name.

Your cigars, do what you want.

I'd make sure to have some pectin on hand since you are likely to need to secure the wrapper on both halves.

Oh yeah, this won't work if you cut it length-wise. :D

Mario, for shits and giggles I ordered a "bundle" a while back. Alltho at that time I don't remember seeing bundle, I remember box and it DID NOT come in a box, which totaly blows.

I went ahead and did that tonight. Went pretty well for me. Cut the cap, light it, and smoke it. Simple but effective.

1) The Cigar will unravel
2) You don't get the full complexity of the cigar since they can and do change through the cigar.
3) Just pick a smaller cigar unless you think that buying a churchill and cutting it in half will save you $$...if that is your mindset than it's prob best not to go further into this hobby.

A little spit keeps the wrapper in place quite well. And as I said before, the complexity issue doesn't matter with a cheap stick. If I want a 15-20 minute smoke then cutting a cheapie in half foots the bill quite nicely, and tastes a ton better than any of the cigarillo style cigars out there from the major companies. A PC size cigar lasts about 40 minutes for me, and that won't work on the drive to work or for a lunch time smoke at work. I still mainly smoke full size, and sometimes expensive sticks, this is just a quick work-around for when I have limited time. I'm not trying to convince anyone that thinks it's dumb to jump into it but the OP asked about it and I wanted to offer up some of my experience on the issue.

I gave a cigar to a guy yesterday....he huffed and puffed for 5 minutes before I let him know he needed to clip the cap....kinda funny. I even offered to clip it first..."oh no, I got this, I've smoked a ton of cigars" Made my night.

I did that b/c that cigar (Flor de Oliva Maduro) sucked. It sucked even worse with both sides lit.

I did that to a Burpha, errr, Gurkha Legend perfecto, and it greatly improved the cigar. Namely because within a few minutes the POS was too hot to smoke and I had to toss it.

Totally agree.

I have cut many churchills down to various sizes and they have not been the same as having smoked them whole. The reason I have cut them has always had to do with just trying to resolve plugged cigars. Some have only needed a third or less cut and those have not differed as much. However, those that I have cut in half or more, have varied vastly from the original smoke experience of that cigar.

Correct me if I am wrong but it's my understanding Cigars have different blend throughout the cigar. More ligero in foot then less or however. Point is it's not symetrical throughout the cigar.

Most people here have moved on and won't go to this site (I only check it out every now and then, mainly for old references), but here is the thread in which I reviewed a Party Lusitania (which was probably a fake) and I cut it in half. Looking back on it I get a laugh every time.:D

It has a bit of detail as to why not to cut a cigar in half.

I also think this is one of the threads that led me to the Admiral's banter threads. Thanks to Mark and Dokk for helping a noob out at the beginning of his journey.:)

A man after my own heart. If I have cheaper cigars, and if they are a larger variety, I will cut them...and have caught my share of grief from my friends. (All good natured, of course). However, I don't cut premium cigars as the taste matures as the burn goes down. (With maybe one or two exceptions.) Oh, and for the unraveling. Never had one unravel on me...I just put it in my mouth and spin (please no jokes) :) The saliva will hold it together.
