Wife and I decided on staying in Cancun. Now we just need to find a NICE resort with calm beaches. What's the recommendation? Also are all the popular restaurants like Seņor Frogs, etc located in the downtown or on the beach strip? Any other and all information would be extremely helpful! Thanks!

Seņor Frogs is in what I believe they consider the downtown area....there are buses running constantly from the resorts to the downtown...cheap.
I recommend the fish tacos at Carlos & Charlies, and the mojitos at the LCdH.

Cheesecake Factory and plenty of other american chains are on the strip.

The deck on the back of LCdH was very relaxing and the mojitos were to die for. Went to Lorenzillo's for a nice dinner great seafood. If you get a chance to see the ruins Nohoch Mul in Coba is the best. You are able to still climb it.

Is the LCDH on the strip or in downtown?

The "beach strip" doesn't have much in terms of restaurants and shopping. It's mostly just hotels/resorts. All of the popular restaurants are by the mall area. There is a large flea market across the street from the mall. Buses are cheap, and probably the most efficient way of getting around.
Places like Senor Frogs and Carlos and Charlies and Daddy O's all have nightly all-you-can drink specials. It was like $18 for the night last time I was there, but that was years ago.

Any recommendations as to where to stay? There's about 40 resorts on the "7" as it's called! Plus there's Isla Mujeres.

The LCdH is across the street from the police station. Kinda funny. There is a stop pretty close. Just tell alto and they will pull over. I am not able to help you out as to where to stay. We stayed in a friend's time share.

This brings back memories!
I haven't been there since 1991, I am sure its all changed in the last 20 years though. But Isla Mujeres was a fun boat ride! All you can drink on the way over and back :)
We went to Chichen Itza and Tulum for our 'Ruins' trips.
I can't even remember what hotel we stayed at, it was still unfinished at the time, with only 1 of the 4 main buildings complete. The main building looked like a Mayan Pyramid and each of the 4 other buildings containing rooms were smaller, long versions of it. We stayed in 'Fozzy Uno' as it sounded to us. Phase one.
The place where the movie 'The Blue Lagoon' filmed wasn't too far away either, snorkeling, swimming, diving, etc etc. But I spent all my time at the bar there as well :)
Have fun and thanks for helping me remember a fun trip, at least parts of it that I can remember!

Good morning Erick,
The downtown area is where City Hall and the locals live.
The hotel zone is where the hotels, nightclubs and most touristy places are located.
As for hotels there is such a wide variety from The Ritz Carlton and Intercontinental at 300$ usd + a night to the 5 star RUI at 180$ usd and more economical places can be found for around 90$ usd on the net.
Eating - I wish there was a Cheesecake Factory but no luck yet!
I highly recommend Cambalache (Argentinian Steakhouse) and for your taco stands you need to head to downtown and eat at La Placita or maybe Los Primos if you are more adventurous (try a Michelada).
LCDH is well worth the trip and Cohiba Atmosphere is temporarily closed and scheduled to re-open in August.
Best of luck and safe travels!
Respectfully,
Travis

It must've been another one of those kind of places I saw the sign for. The last thing I want to eat in Mexico is US chain food :td

I hear ya! Mayan is not one of my favorite Mexican region's, but bring it on when I am there. Sol beer's and "Mezcal right from the bottle" as Sammy sings.
If you can go to Isla Mujeres, the Naval PX has Don Julio for $15 USD for instance. Tequila is for sure cheaper in Mexico.

You're right about that moses - McDonald's, BK, KFC, Rainforest, Cajun Chicken and too many others to mention!
Erick - Give me a shout when you know the dates - work makes it tough for me, I am still trying to catch up with Mikes in Cozumel but would like to try a lunchtime cigar at LCDH or CA.

Works for me. I will plan it all out in the coming weeks and let you know. The $15 Don Julio caught my eye!
So Erick, did you end up going last September...? What were your findings?

I had to check where the Blue Lagoon was really shot, because while we were just in the Dominican Republic, a guy that sells tours told us it was shot at a place where a trip went that he was selling.
Turns out we both got misinformed, imdb and wikipedia say it was shot in Fiji.
It made me smile when I saw you say that, anyways. I almost went on that tour just because of that. Really. :)

I was there last may. Stayed at the ME by Melia hotel...The room was excellent and the beach was nice. However we are more the advernturous type, and never really stayed around the hotels. If its your kinda thing, make sure you check out Xel-ha and Dos Ojos Cinote. Absolutely amazing diving...

You should check out the RUI CANCUN. I was there back in September-2010.
If you do or want to do any of the excursions make sure you book with the rep's in the hotel lobby. Everyone sells you trips/excursions but for the few bucks you save by buying them outside the hotel you are better off going with the hotle rep's. I'm sure you would rather go on nice rock star style tour bus with A/C, drinks, movies & food. If you go with the other guys you will get a white VW van all just to save $40-$50 -(P
Restaurants, the hotel has a steak house, buffet, asia house & nice buffet by the pool. On the hotel strip you can find just about every spot you can think of & all are about a 5-min taxi ride away. :tu
this is just my :2

P.S. dont buy any of the "HABANOS" cigars off the guys on the beach, strip or hotel. I was there for 15-days & did not see anyone with real Habanos.

How is the beach water there? I have heard the water is not to clear and lots of turtle grass.

LOL!
Tourists are suckers I spose. We had a blast there, the wife (ex now) and kid went snorkeling and I made FULL use of the bar.
So maybe the Blue Lagoon wasn't filmed there, but it was pretty darned nice :)

I was under the impression that there was a LCDH in the hotel zone?

YES, they do. I was refering to all the little markets, trinket shops, hotel lobby & the guys on the beach who try selling you $1 items at $45 each.
I do apologize for the confusion... -(P
Excellent.... I am heading there shortly and though will take 20-25 sticks of my own, I wanted to stop into the LCdH to see if they had anything interesting.....

Its not bad; but there are some tides which will stir up the sand. Also by Xelha there are haloclines which will impede visibility. Here's some pics:
