I have a straight pipe now, but have found that it is hard to keep in my mouth when working on other things.. What is a good (lower-end) pipe that would be easy to work with?

you'll want something light weight otherwise your jaw will start to hurt. all of my light weight pipes are estates and no longer made, however that doesn't mean they aren't still made, i just don't know them. I wouldn't want to chew the hell out of any of my 4 digit kaywoodies however. you may want to look into bit protectors

Don't overlook a Missouri Meershaum cob. Good yard, or work pipes

I was thinking about a cob, but I thought I heard that bent-pipes are easier to hang in the mouth.

I have a Peterson Shape 01, it's a nice pipe. I also use the soft rubber bits for the end of my pipes.
