View Full Version : I had my FIRST bowl!!

Well, I had my first bowl of well.. I don't exactly know what. It was in a plastic baggy marked: personal blend from a friend of mine. I enjoyed smoking the pipe, and I found to like it more than cigars!
I have an old pipe that my dad gave to me (the one I bought off of ebay is currenly MIA, I didn't even get a chance to smoke it!). I have a few quick questions..
1) What is a reputable pipe tobacco dealer? My local BM doesn't have it, let alone good cigars.
2) Cleaning/Storage tips/tricks/instructions
3) How do I store pipe tobacco? Humidor?
4) Can you smoke crushed cigar tobacco in a pipe (Stupid question, but I got a few cigars I like still, but don't want to smoke a cigar anymore)?
5) My bowl got pretty warm.. Is this normal? Not unbearably hot, but definitely warm..
Thanks guys! Piping is where its at!

I'm a newbie pipe smoker as well, and there are a few tips I learned VERY quickly:
TAKE YOUR TIME The first bowl I smoked felt like molten rock after some time...as soon as I slowed it down it cooled right down and really brought out the flavors.
Smoke half bowls at first. You need to break in the pipe to optimize its smoking quality...and stick with similar tobaccos.
As far as storing it...just keep it verticle with the bowl facing down.

packing it didnt seem to be difficult, I only had to relight one time.. I did alot of reading here ;)..
Thanks for the tip of slowing down, how long does an average bowl take?..
What about cigars in pipes? Anyone done that yet?

I was smoking half bowls and taking about 30 minutes...that's while drinking too so I wasn't rushing by any means.
You can smoke tobacco from cigars, but I wouldn't do it with your regular pipe...maybe a cob??

I also seem to salivate alot.. Is this normal? Or do I just notice it more because of the mouth piece, cause it isnt a cigar that soaks it up?

1. Heres about the best six etailers on the Internet:
www.pipesandcigars.com
www.smokingpipes.com
www.cupojoes.com
www.marscigars.com
www.iwanries.com
www.4noggins.com
2. Take a look at all the pipe threads...they'll answer a lot of these questions if not all
3. Do not store pipe tobacco in a cigar humidor or you'll be saying adios to the humi...keep the stuff in the tins you buy it in and get these little discs that take distilled water or PG solution and dtop them in the tins and/or pouches...
4. Not really...I mean you can try, but i don't think you'll enjoy the results...there are tobaccos, however, that have cigar leaf in them amongst other pipe tobaccos...
5. Warm yes, hot no...if it gets hot slow down your puffing or let it go out and rest for a few minutes to cool down...I'm a cigar smoker too, and tend to puff pretty furiously on my pipes so I have to slow myself down...

smokingpipes.com
4noggins.com
iwanries.com
(i would shy away from pipesandcigars.com until they decide to change their method of taking orders for tobacco they don't have in stock and holding onto the rest of your order until they get the missing stuff in stock - never had it happen to me, because i've only ordered from there once, stuff that's not highly sought after, but a number of friends have had it happen to them)
2) Cleaning/Storage tips/tricks/instructions
i believe everyone has already replied with links for that.
3) How do I store pipe tobacco? Humidor?
glass canning jars for long term. for short term, stuff you're currently smoking, i'd suggest ZipLoc Twist 'n Loc's.
4) Can you smoke crushed cigar tobacco in a pipe (Stupid question, but I got a few cigars I like still, but don't want to smoke a cigar anymore)?
i've heard of some ppl doing that, but i've never done it, and have never heard of good results from anyone trying it.
5) My bowl got pretty warm.. Is this normal? Not unbearably hot, but definitely warm..
normal.
you will of course be waiting to order till you turn 18 correct?

I'm serious. While I personally have no problems with you smoking under age I don't want retailers shut down because they sold to someone underage.

You and Darrell are the only two that would have anyone shutdown. Besides you two, no ones makes a big deal about my age. So Id appreciate it if we would drop it.

No thanks. I'd rather make a big deal about a teenager on a tobacco enthusiast forum for adults.
Seeing as I order from this companies I don't want them getting into trouble because someone underage ordered from them. It's hard enough as it is finding retailers that have what I want at prices that don't feel like i'm taking it in the ass so no I'm not going to let it go.
as I said I don't care what you do personally, smoke don't smoke, chew don't chew, drink, drugs, unprotected sex with strippers I don't care. You can make your own decisions AS LONG AS YOU DON'T PUT ANYONE ELSES ASS ON THE LINE TO DO IT. Some kid just came into the shop here to try and buy smokes under age as part of a sting to fine/shut them down. I'll say it again, i don't care you smoke cigars and pipes it's cool with me, if I'm ever in indiana I'll be glad to smoke one with you...just don't put peoples livelihood on the line to do it

On that note, I am done worrying about Colin. If he gets someone in trouble because they sell him / give him tobacco products, it won't be on my conscious. I tried to inform everyone.

Well Loki, I look forward to sharing a smoke with you if we can.

did you even get my point colin? It's not that I don't like you, the times I chatted with you in the chat room you seemed pleasant enough, it's that your age makes it illegal for people supply you with tobacco and that needs to be known so that people don't end up getting jammed up for trying to be nice

Yes sir. I realize this. I see your point. Thanks.

I will KINDLY ask this ongoing discussion to end. It has been mentioned to at least one of you already to knock it off. I do not want to have to mention it again.
Please everyone, CA is about family and community and I am NOT seeing that in this thread. Does anyone remember Tecnorobo? That's right, some of you weren't around when Blake first signed up on CS. I consider him a friend and a BOTL and he started pretty much the same way.
This will be the last I hear about this in this thread...thank you.
Any further questions, take it to PM.

So you smoked your first bowl, and you've already decided that you like it better than cigars, and piping is "where its at"?
OK.

I love my pipe, but I wouldn't abandon cigars all together. Think of them as complements, rather than substitutes. Personally, I go for my cigars when I'm looking for something full bodied and full strengh. I go for my pipe when I'm looking for something smooth, mild, and sweet. You can get pipe tobaccos that have a little more kick...I just tend to prefer the sweeter pipe tobaccos.

Edited an age argument. Apparently I should have read the thread and the lock threat.
Lucky too, it was scathing. :)
