Belgium monks know how to make a great strong beer. I love Chimay. Any one else likes the Chimay beers?

Not sure if I would call Chimay strong, but I do love the Red over the White or Blue. I got some bottles of 08 stuck away and going to start putting some 09's away.

I like them all, but I am with Dave that I'll pickup the Red first and also don't think they are strong. But then again it has been going on 10 years since I drank a beer with less than 6% alcohol. Maybe that is why my cheeks are so red. :r

If you like Chimay, try
Rochefort 10 and St Bernardus Abt 12

I do love some Chimay beer. If you have a place that has a good selection of cheese, look for the Chimay trappist cheese too, it's a great pairing.
As far as other strong ales go, I love Trois Pistoles by Unibroue and Three Philosophers by Ommegang. Both very excellent, smooth, and strong ales.

I also prefer Chimay red over the blue. I also prefer Rochefort 8 over 10. Blue and 10 seem more boozy. I bought a bottle of St Bernardus Abt 12 over the holidays, but mistakenly tried to drink it by myself. I should have waited to split it with a guest, it was too much for me to enjoy in one sitting.

My local cigar bar has the blue and the red. I've only tried the blue and liked it, but I'll have to give the red a try next time I'm in.

I like 'em all! Costco was selling the larger blue bottles for about 8 bucks over here in Texas. Looks like they were blowing them out because everyone only wants budlight or miller when they goto Costco heh. Anyway, picked up a case and put 'em away about 6 months ago.
I had one the other day. Not bad at all!

Um , just a little . I would love to stumble across the Chimay Cheese , :dr . I've only got the Premier(red) in my cellar but will soon cellar some of the Blue just to see how it mellows if at all . Chimay changed how I look at Ale . Those Belgians really know what they're doing . Lots of good advice in this thread . Ommegang from Cooperstown , NY has a few excellent Ales , the Witte and the Dubbel are really good . Next Christmas keep your eyes out for the St.Bernardus Christmas Ale , simply amazing . Good luck !

There aren't many Belgian brews I don't like. Chimay's definitely up there. My wallet isn't too fond of it though.

I like Chimay, but would prefer a St Bernardus over it.

10-15 years of aging on a Chimay 3L is a real treat.

I have mainly drank the red, and some blues. I have never tried the white. How does the white compare to the red? Thanks

Love the stuff. Of the Belgians I've had Orval is my favorite. Damn now I need to go beer shopping!

sorry for the long time in between replies. I didn't read the date on the bottles. I just drank 'em and enjoyed the hell outta them.
I guess when the next batch runs through costco i'll look at the dates.

Costco has gone wild with selling 750's of Beligan ales. Most are $9 each.

I usually reach for the blue, I'm going to have to revisit the red after all the love for it in this thread.

I really enjoy Chimay, but love Westmalle, Rochefort, and St. Bernardus (and Westvleteren :D)
I will be doing the same this New Years as I did last and getting a 1.5L of Chimay Grand Reserve.

Not a chimay fan at all. Rochefort 10 is Belgian beer of choice. I've yet to try Westvleteren or St. Bernadus. Can't get them in my area but they are on my die to try list.

Yep, Chimay is good... Red, White and Blue! Again, good suggestions in this thread, Delirium Tremens, Nocturnum, Noel are all good. Would personally add the Affligem line to a list for you to try, love them myself!
