View Full Version : Are you addicted to cigars?

Just curious because my body doesn't crave cigars the way a cigarette smoker craves a cigarette. Is a cigar much more addictive if you enhale?

I'm addicted in the sense that if I had to take a two week break on smoking it would be hard and really suck. But I'll go two or three days without one and there's no physical effect. I usually smoke 2-3 a day, and 4-8 at events or herfs. And I don't think you need to inhale, you get plenty of nicotine from just puffing. But I think cigar addiction is more of a mental thing than a physical one.

As a 20 year cigarette smoker, then a cigar smoker, they are quite different. I would really miss not having a cigar for sure and enjoy 3 - 4 per day now. I don't crave cigars the way I did cigs. I had to have a cig first thing in the morning. I think the cigar desire is much more mental, although I agree there are physical addiction attributes.

I wouldn't say I'm addicted but I crave one after a few days, but if the weather is bad or I'm busy, I have no problem going for a week or two without one. But this time of year, when the temps are hitting the 70's and the sun is out, I gotta go sit in the hammock and enjoy a nice big churchill.

I like 'em a lot, but I'm not addicted to 'em. I was addicted to cigarettes for 13 or 14 years. The cigars are entirely different. I only smoke about 1 a day unless it's a herf, then I may have 2 or 3.

Your question needs clearification IMO.

Physicaly: No, I can stop with out any nicotine withdrawl symptoms.
Mentaly: Sure. In that if I'm having a horrible day, depressed, or anxious the only thing on my mind is wanting to lose my thoughts in a cloud of smoke.

Addicted physically = NO

Addicted Mentally = YES

When I can't smoke cigars I find my self reading reviews and shopping for cigars.

Probably why I created my website:

No. I smoked cigs for over thirty years and I think I have a pretty fair understanding as to what addiction is all about.

My cigars aren't even in the running. I haven't even had a cigar today, though I usually do smoke one or two a day. Just haven't had the time or opportunity today - no biggie. With cigarettes, I couldn't wake up and go a few hours without needing one. If I ran out, all I could think about was a trip to the liquor store to get another pack. Quitting cigs was tough.

Cigars I enjoy, but on my terms. Cigarettes were a desperate craving.

I Also Agree.

As you know, cigar tobacco is the only tobacco that is fermented. Numerous books and articles on the subject of curing and fermenting cigar tobacco explain what happens to the leaf. The fermentation process is sometimes referred to as "sweating" the leaf. Among other things, ammonia is sweated out of the leaf as well as reducing nicotine content. Many people don't realize that cigar tobacco is actually quite low in nicotine.

I've gone over a month without a cigar with no real issue. That said, I did miss hanging out with my BOTL's. I guess you could say my withdrawal was more about \the social aspect of cigars than anything physical :)

Ive gone for periods of time without a cigar. the longest was a month or so, as I was too busy with school or away on study abroad. I didn't feel a thing.

Did I want to relax and smoke? sure, but I didn't need it. I could give up cigars right now, but Id be far less happy as I am with them.

I pretty much agree with everyone else. I was curious to see if anyone just craved cigars physically like they would cigarettes or if much higher usage (ie, daily) created that desire. I've typically only been a once a week kinda guy, but after tonight, I'll be on my 5th since Friday night. :D

I'm in the same boat as you...I've gone long periods without them and I didn't have any issues. I think what I miss the most is the social/relaxation aspect of it. There are fewer things that rank higher than a good smoke, good food, and good people. I figure if I don't have to give that up, why try? :D

I am not addicted to them and can go several days without lighting up. But every once in a while I get a little mental "whiff", if you can understand, of a really good smelling cigar and want another of those.

No, definitely not. As a mainly outdoor smoker, I smoke very rarely in the winter. Do I often want to smoke cigars in the winter? Yes, of course. But will I go freeze my butt off to smoke a cigar outside? Hell no!

I think it is very possible to be physically addicted to cigars, which is why I make a point to always take a few days off after smoking all weekend. Ideally, I try to abstain Monday through Thursday to avoid it becoming a daily habit, but occasionally I will smoke one mid week. I have noticed that on Mondays, there is a definite craving, whether its physical or mental, (I think its physical) I have to really fight the urge to break down and smoke. Monday is difficult, Tues. is better, Wed. I usually don't crave cigars at all.

Addicted? No

I've gone without having one for two weeks up to two months. Sometimes I'm not in a mood and don't even think about it. A few times while I was working at the cigar shop, it felt weird being the only one not smoking but that's it.

i would have to say the nicotine addiction is there for me to some degree. i smoke every day, and crave one when i go more than a few days without. agreed, its not like cigarretes, but i think i'd be fooling myself if i said there was no aspect of nicotine addiction there.

Same story here. When I was a cigarette smoker, I would smoke in the cold, rain, etc and when I was dead dog sick. Since I only smoke cigars now, I will not sit outside in cold or rainy weather to smoke and I can go well over a week if I'm sick without smoking. Do I still want one, sure...but not to the point of where I get nervous, on edge, "antsy", short tempered, or any of the other feelings I would experience if I didn't smoke a cigarette.

I have been a cigarette smoker off and on for 35 years. It has been 7 years since I have had one, and I know now, I will never have another.

Probably about 20 years ago, I tried smoking a couple of cigars, after having stopped cigarettes for 5 years. There was no problem going without the cigars for extended periods of time, and I assumed ( I always assume too much!), my resistance to the addictive nature of nicotine was under control and I could apply the same to cigarettes. Boy was I wrong! Pretty soon I was smoking a pack a day.

So you can understand my trepidation about a year ago when I lit up my first real cigar, that I had been gifted (20 years ago, it was Swishers and A&C's). This time, the quality of the cigar, but more importantly, the total experience of cigar smoking - understanding the history, culture and interacting with the BOTL-provides a much richer experience than cigarette smoking ever could.

Well I have rambled enough without answering the original post so: While I think there might be a slight physical component, it is so muted that it is cake walk to deal with (actually, staying away from cake is probably harder:)).

That's my :2

Nope, not addicted to cigars.
Most everything else, yes. I often go long periods without smoking a cigar. It's more of a fair weather bad habit than a daily bad habit. If it's nice out and I'm out in it, I love having a cigar with me. Once the garden comes into play, I don't smoke as much because I don't smoke around the plants. (Tobacco mosaic virus tears them up.)
Cigar smoking is a very special treat for me, and I work really hard to keep it that way. I want to enjoy it for a long time to come. :tu

Anywhoosit, I think that inherently, cigars contain nicotine, thus do have some potential for physical addiction at the very least. Speaking from extensive pipe experience (and limited cigar exp) it's definitely mostly a psychological addiction.

Some of it sounds good to me. But as a former smoker for SOME time, I KNOW what nicotine addiction
is like. The only problem you ever run into is with know-it-alls, in my case my mother, a dear woman
and a nurse, who believes everything she reads by do-good, best-intentioned family practitioners with no
knowledge of oncology, but who love to get paid to write articles for Parade newspaper insert mags
about how bad cigar smoking is for you and how it is as addictive as cigarettes, and it makes you go
blind and impotent, etc.

Just insert your personal busybody in place of my mother and you will get an earful of all this valuable
health info theyuncovered. Probably in a fortune cookie. You can REALLY want a cigar, but you will
not likely become an abrasive, jittery @$$}{)Le for one. You get nicotine, yes, and I know this because
I often use a cigar to get over quitting withdrawals with some success.

akumushi
05-06-2010, 10:23 AM
Yeah, I think the big thing is, you don't get addicted to cigars, you get addicted to nicotine, and as a nicotine delivery device, cigars are cumbersome, time consuming and have a very slow delivery system, so they simply are not condusive to addictive behavior. If I were addicted to nicotine, I would just start smoking cigarettes again rather than trying to milk my fix out of an expensive luxury product. Cigars are for relaxing and enjoying the flavor of a quality product, about slow, reflective time alone or with friends, they are not about a cheap fix. :2
