I love music! I have recently hit 100GB's of music in my collection which is pretty decent for me. However, I'm always looking to expand and listen to new and different types of music. So, I thought this thread would be a great way for everyone to share their favorite album and maybe give a quick little blurb about what type of music it is and why its your favorite. In this way we can all check out music that may be new to us.

I know I will sure appreciate it :tu
So post away CA fam :banger

Edit - You can list as many albums as you'd like. Not limited to just one :)

I'll give it a go as well.

Danzig - Lucifuge

I have a deep seated love for Metal and having been originally raised in the South, a great appreciation for blues. This album is the quintessential Danzig album IMO. It combines Glenn Danzig's dark brooding metal with blues influences and generates an amazing sound. Danzig's voice is unique and may not be for everyone however it has been stated he sounds like "Jim Morrisson in Hell". :D I tend to agree with this description. The album has a varied mix of styles on it and I never get tired of listening to it. Tired of Being Alive is my favorite track followed by Her Black Wings and Girl. Give it a listen if you're a metal fan.

The Misfits: Static Age

This is quintessential Misfits. The songs on this album are what the Misfits are all about. They're my favorite band and they have been since I was 12, it was this album that did it for me.

Metallica - S&M

I have always loved both Metallica and classical music, so when I heard there was an album that incorporated both, I was sold. All the greatest Metallica songs accompanied by the San Fransisco Orchestra. Simply Awesome.

King James

Eric Clapton - Complete Clapton

I have always loved Clapton, and this gives a taste of him all the way back to Cream and Blind Faith and then up to his solo stuff as well as projects with BB King and JJ Cale (who originally recorded "Cocaine")

I've really been trying to expand my horizons and have stumbled upon some truly great bands lately. So I'm looking to continue the trend. Feel free to suggest more than one as well if you have more than one :banger:

They are? That is interesting. Their first CD release in '86 is must find, but pretty rare. I liked them, but was never crazy for them. Out of the punk/hardcore bands of that era, Black Flag, Meat Men, Bad Brains, Government Issue, FU's, Verbal Assault, Murphy's Law, and Slap Shot I liked the most.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

Do I really need to explain this one?

Van Morrison - Astral Weeks Live at the Hollywood Bowl

Astral Weeks was his seminal album as a young singer. He recorded a live version about two years ago. With his now 30 year later aged voice it is one helluva an album.

Since we can have more then one...
My other favorite album of all time is:

Godsmack - Faceless
As my other favorite band (tied with Metallica) I love this album because of their dark sort of grunge style that comes across, as well as it is probably thier best album to date.

A couple I always come back to are:

Faith No More - Angel Dust (Just an amazing album from top to bottom. I love Mike Patton's vocals on this one)
Supreme Beings of Leisure - Supreme Beings of Leisure (Great groovy, loungey tunes)
The Police - Message in a Box (The complete recordings which really shows the evolution of the band)

Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road and also Essence is very good.
Big Head Todd - Sister Sweetly and All the Love You Need is also very good.
Cowboy Junkies - Trinity Sessions
Johnny Cash - Ain't No Grave

That's all just some off the wall stuff that I've really been enjoying lately. Trinity Sessions is an incredible voice at work, Big Head Todd is just good easy listening, Lucinda has a gravely voice and sings stuff from the heart. She's 100% sex. And Johnny is just the badassest. :tu

Elvis Costello - Punch the Clock
Jethro Tull - Aqualung
I could go on for a long time, but those are classics that are off the top of my head.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gimmie Back My Bullets

Being born 'n bred in the South, I love rock n' roll and blues. Southern rock is the ultimate combination of both with lyrics that express our experience and way of life. Needless to say, Skynyrd is the quintessential Southern rock band.

When most people think Skynyrd, and Southerners are no exception, they think Freebird and Sweet Home Alabama (maybe Gimmie Three Steps and Curtis Lowe) but the Gimmie Back My Bullets album is Skynyrd and Van Zant at full maturity. "Trust, ""Every Mother's Son," and "All I Can Do Is Write About It."

The later song is my favorite Skynyrd song period. It's a beautiful song about the South's natural, rural, beauty. If you like Skynyrd and haven't heard "All I Can Do Is Write About It" you need to!!! Here's the link:

I can't pick one artist/group, let alone one single album.

A few years ago, I was talking with Ernest Williamson and David Smith (keyboards and bass guitar for Michael Burks) and we were talking about great guitarists (besides their boss, who is a _phenomenal_ blues guitarist in his own right) and we all had kind of the same opinion, and that is picking a single artist over another is very difficult at best, picking a single album over all others, even more so, especially if the artist has a diverse catalog. I love Jimi Hendrix's work, I love Duane Allman's work - two totally different players, I can't classify one as better than the other, sure, once can nitpick technical playing characteristics if they want, but not all great music is made that way. Get into a diverse artist like Zappa for example, don't ask me to pick a single one of FZs albums as my favorite, it's simply not possible, and I have probably every FZ album ever made and then some to pick from.

One thing I will say though, is that I usually prefer the live albums, with all their imperfections over the studio work. Even the technically horrid ones, like the original version of Live at Leeds from The Who, with all it's recording errors and dodgy mic cables causing the clicking and poping, is something that captures the true essense of a band.

Sorry Dustin I can't just add one. I try and throw a few different things into the mix here.

1) Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac by Fleetwood Mac
This is a great collection of some of the early work by Fleetwood Mac when it was a blues band. Pre Stevie Nick and with three great guitarists!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTvKaLW5bu8

2) Loaded by The Velvet Underground
This would be their more commercial successful album. I still enjoy The Velvet Underground and Nico but Loaded is great start to finish it also has amazing writing. It's great early New York rock/psychedelic.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkumhBVPGdg&feature=related

3) Vs. God, More Songs About Girlfriends And Bubblegum, This Sh!t Is Genius and Midwestern Songs Of The Americas (any of these albums) by Dillinger Four. Still some one of my favorite Punk bands. Funny, witty, smart as hell lyrics and a great band to see live.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paEB7YoL36E&feature=related

4) Minx by Leatherface (runner up albums are The Last, Mush, and Cherry Knowle)
I was lucky to enough to see this British Punk band years ago and still enjoy their music today. The lead singer Frankie Stubbs has an unusual voice, it's like having Tom Waits singing punk rock.

Dave, you should check out the Cowboy Junkies doing Sweet Jane (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHRFZFmEq9o&feature=fvw).
The punk bands you like aren't too hardcore. There's another punk band called the Rugburns (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5x_ikFpqz0) that I used to enjoy. They're kind of a pop/punk hybrid. The stuff that's on youtube is basically the pop. What I could find, anyways. Their albums flesh out a lot funner.

yes and no. I was trying to find something to post from the bands.

I have a slew of punk music and was into for a lot of years. Everything from pre-punk, 77 punk, 80's hardcore and into the 90's with Lookout and the start of a lot of the pop punk. These are still some of my favorites along with Screeching Weasel/Riverdales.

I would agree with that one, Scott, but the way they screw up one of the lovliest line in music on that same album, by changing Hank Williams' classic verse to "The silence of a falling star/Lights up a purple haze" makes me cringe each time I hear it.

Who the hell would fark with Hank Williams, I wanna know!

Great albums there. Surprised to see someone else into Yngwie. Most people have never heard of him.

For me:

Octavarium - Dream Theater. DT's my favorite band and they have number of albums that are in my top 10 but this one's at the top. I can listen to it over and over. The title track "Octavarium" is one of their epic 20+ min songs, taking you all over the map.

The Odyssey - Symphony X. Symp X follows in the mold of DT, but more straight forward progressive metal. I find it rather interesting that a band could take something like Greek Mythology and turn it into an album.

Deadwing - Porcupine Tree. PT has a number of other really good albums (In Absentia, Signify, Fear of a Blank Planet), but for me this is their go to album. They've been described as a modern day Pink Floyd. I can't say for sure myself as I haven't listened to a lot of Floyd.

Liquid Tension Experiment - Liquid Tension Experiment. A side project of some of the Dream Theater guys, this is a completely instrumental album with loads of jazz fusion influences. There's a song called "3 Minute Warning" that's over 20+ minutes and was recorded in one take. It's a complete improv jam.

Joe Jackson - BEAT CRAZY
The percussion on this record is epic, and you will NEVER hear a
better performance on bass than Graham Maby's. Mind-F#$%ing
The cover might be the best album art ever.

The Jim Caroll Band - CATHOLIC BOY
Jim died last year, but this record stands as a true testament
to the unique talent he had.

Neil Young - COMES A TIME
This is a great old Neil recording. Not much grunge on this one.

Greg Allman Band - LAID BACK, PLAYIN UP A STORM
Sweet albums from Gregg. Some of the coolest songs ever laid
down by an Allman.

Billy Joel - THE STRANGER

I could literally go on forever. You've seen my posts.
If there is one thing I know, it is music. I have been collecting
records since the mid-70's and like all music but country. Most
I am tired of, (60s-70s) so it's mostly 'new wave' for me now.
The first two are must owns.

Different albums for different reasons:

Ministry - Land of Rape and Honey (Stigmata played on the radio..really did it for me)

The Cramps - Bad music for Bad People (Lux Interior was probably my favorite front man..got the rare opportuity to see them..first time stage diving and crowd surfing)

Love and Rockets - (First date with my wife and first concert with her in 1989)

Fugazi - Repeater (saw them for free in a high school gym..no security..fantastic)

Beastie Boys - Pauls Boutique (saw them as well in a high school gymnasium..Henry Rollins opened for them)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Mothers Milk (saw them at a very small venue before they were anyone..got to meet and talk to Flea)

Danzig - Lucifuge (saw them at a small venue when this album came out in 1990...fantastic)

PIL - Happy? (for those that don't know this was John Lydon's band he started after the Sex Pistols disbanded...saw them at a small venue in the early 90's)

A Tribe Called Quest- Peoples Instinctive Travels and Paths of Rhythm (use to love this album...saw them again at a small venue early 90's)

Bauhaus- all of them (Really love the band, Bella Lugosi's Dead is one of my favorite songs)

The Smiths - The Very Best Of (probably my all time favorite song "How soon is Now")

Bad Brains - I Against I (great album)

Lynyrd Skynyrd - (Nothin Fancy, one of my favorites)

Johnny Cash (live at San Quenton)

The Ramones - all of them

probably more but these had the most influence on me...

Has to be two albums, both jazz, Dave Brubeck Quartet Time Out, many experinments with time signatures, most notable song was probably Take Five; the other would be Miles Davis *****es Brew, straight avant guarde jazz. Honorable mentions would be most anything by Jon Luc Ponte or Michael Urbaniak, both jazz violin.

This one is so easy... I could list a bunch... but if you are asking absolute favorite album:

Allman Brothers Live at Filmore East- Duane Allman was out of his mind stoned but played beyond comparision!!

And if that album ain't enough to convince you, then listen to "Mountain Jam" off the Eat A Peach album from that same concert. Duane's solo right after the dual-drum break in the middle is the most transcendent guitar work you will ever hear - no freakin' joke.

Would like to recommend a couple more favorites.
1)Return To The Tomb Of Guiliano Medidici by Restavrant.
"This Texas duo’s raging garage punk influenced swamp rock that guarantees a good night out. Banjos, guitars, and some extremely interesting percussion (oil drums, boxes, license plates & whatever else they can pull from the local dumpster!…) plus a heaping spoonful of hillbilly = GOOD TIMES. "
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swQd_thOdw8

2)Other Way Out/Other Way In by Sun Dial.
would be considered psychedelic rock.
This was something I stumbled onto awhile back and feel in love with.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMlF6_DxdSo

3)Unknown Pleasures, Closer and Substance (for "Love Will Tear Us Apart")by Joy Division.
Would fall into the post-punk category. Started around from 1976 to through 1980 with the death (suicide of the singer Ian Cutis).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PldpBJEn4vQ

Hard to mention Joy Division and not New Order.
4)International by New Order. New Order was a New Wave band that formed from the remaining members of Joy Division after Ian's death. The single Blue Monday is one of the top selling singles in the UK. Still enjoy putting on some New Order from time to time. Both bands were connected to one of the most bizarre record companies ever, Factory Records. If you liked either bands I would suggest the movie "24 Hour Party People".

So far I've become addicted to Mofro and the White Stripes. Lisa is totally digging the White Stripes, too. I was surprised to see they did the song on Napoleon Dynamite. I'd have never put that together.
Incredible duo, it's hard to believe all that talent comes out of a divorced husband and wife. It's a damned fine thing to see. :tu

I'll add these two nuggets...
Blue Orchid - The White Stripes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC16j0TlVfA&playnext_from=TL&videos=RPXKFFA36oo&playnext=2)
My Doorbell - The White Stripes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LT3w6-cCn10&playnext_from=TL&videos=RPXKFFA36oo)
Those two videos are easily in my top ten videos of all time. I'm not sure who did them, but I'd love to see more of their work. The imagery in Blue Orchid is incredible, the whole video plays like a ton of black and white stills.
The Little Rascals theme in Doorbell is too cool.

Couple of favorites of mine Scott.

Never paid any attention to the White Stripes until I heard "My Doorbell" on a progressive radio station a couple years ago. I missed the lead-in so I had no idea who the artist was, but found out and bought "Get Behind Me Satan". Metallica - Metallica (AKA "Black Album")

Simply awesome.

Metallica - AJFA :banger:banger:banger

aj

Metallica was fantastic early on. I like anything Black Album and earlier.Their

First album "Kill 'Eem All" is fast and aggressive.
"Ride The Lightning" is also very good. Similar style as the first but more melodic
"Master of Puppets" is my favorite Metallica album. It has a little bit of everything they do well
"And Justice For All" has their best individual song "One" on it. As a whole another good album
"Metallica - Black Album" is the one that launched them into the mainstream. This album brought in many new fans without losing their most of their core fans.

I'll spare my comments on their newer stuff; they're not positive.

Aside from that I've gone to primarily a country music fan. Some of my favs:

Gary Allan "Tough All Over"
Josh Turner "Long Black Train"
Josh Turner "Your Man"
Johnny Cash - "At Folsom Prison"
Kenny Chesney - "No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems"
Toby Keith "Shock'n Y'All"
George Strait "50 Number Ones" - Which actually has 51 songs that hit #1 on the country charts

Not exactly country but I love their blues/latino blend. Good stuff:
Los Lonely Boys "Los Lonely Boys"

OK, I'm gonna toss Derek and the Dominoes "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" into this mix, with the proviso understood that the title track is perhaps the most over-rated (and certainly the most over-played) one on the entire double-album set. IMHO. "Key To The Highway" is far and away the best track of them all, with the guitar duel between Clapton and Duane being one of the essentials of any rock collection. Plus, songs like "Bell-Bottom Blues", "Tell The Truth", "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" and "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad" are all great.

Discuss, but do not dismiss.

I have The Allman Brothers Eat a Peach Deluxe Edition, that has 2 discs. The second disc is the live concert, from the last time they played at the Fillmore East. I likey very much.:noon

The Allman Brothers mentions lead me to think about another great one. Little Feat - Waiting for Columbus.

To clarify, a few points you may not know:

First, it was the last time anybody played at the Fillmore East, as they were the closing act. They did it right, and jammed until dawn, though Gregg later claimed they were so lost in the music they didn't realize this until somebody popped the doors open and the rising sun streamed in. Second, that 34-minute Mountain Jam, based upon the Donovan song from 1967, actually begins on the Live At Fillmore East album. The 4th side of that double album was a 23-minute jam of their signature Whipping Post. At the end, as the crowd quiets down, Duane begins noodling out out those first few sweet notes which open the longer jam that follows - "Duh, uupi-doop doop dah uup uup, duh-uup doop doop doo-da uup upp." Then the album fades to silence.

We loyal Allman fans, in mourning of Duane's tragic death, had to wait over a year to find out what that was.

Also wasn't the fillmore album a combination of two show?

In more ways than one, truth be told. Not only were there shows on Friday March 12th and Saturday March 13th 1971 (not counting the next-dawn slopover :D ), but even some of the cuts on the album were amalgams of different performances from those sets. To quote Wikipoopia:

"For example, the first seven minutes of "You Don't Love Me" is from the first show on March 13 and the rest (Starting at Duane's solo without the band) is from the second show on March 12."

Ok I'll play, I also have a HUGE collection of music, I have OVER 3,000 cd's not including what's on my computer, congrats to OP for having over 100gbs of music, that is awesome.

Some of my favorites in no particular order:

1. Orange Goblin - Coup De Grace (find this album!)
2. Beastie Boys - Check Your Head (this was the ablum that put them way ahead of the hiphop/rap genre)
3. Guns N Roses - Appetite For Destruction (not a bad song on this album from front to back)
4. Foo Fighters - s/t (again not a bad song on here)
5. Kyuss - Welcome To Sky Valley (massive album)
6. Fu Manchu - Go For It Live! (2 cd of live badassedness!!)

*edit* forgot a big one

7. AC/DC - Back In Black (a lot of people would say a Bon album, but this one is the 1st one after Bion died and once again not a bad song.....I love Bon too, so don't get me wrong, but this album can never go wrong no matter the setting)

Enjoy :banger

Looking back through this thread I forgot GnR, AC/DC, STP, Pantera, and The Eagles.

This thread is reminding me of all the music I have and haven't listened to in a good bit.

This is why I love these kind of threads, not only do I find people with similar tastes, but it also reminds me of the good stuff I have.

The new album from Dave Alvin "Eleven Eleven" is fantastic. It's about to hit my top ten. Alvin is one of the best songwriters today and is grossly underappreciated.

Van Halen 1 – Can you hear the car horn when the needle drops on side 1?
Bowie – Scary Monsters. I can listen to this first song to last over and over again. Pete Townsend did a guest spot.
Soundgarden – Bad Motorfinger. Heavy like a sledge hammer on hot tar
Mike Patton – Mondo Cane. If you like faith no more and want to hear what Mike has been up to buy it. Most of the songs are in Italian.
Nirvana - In utero.
Guns and Roses - chinese democracy - call me crazy but, I was one of the few who thought is was almost worth the wait.

So many more I could go on but I think that I will stick with those as my full album (cd) picks. Elvis, Zep, Willie, Kanye, Ice Cube, Johnny Cash, Def Tones, U2, Foos and so many more from my younger days working in a record store to what I like today.

Great thread thanks. I'm going to hit submit now so I don't keep adding to my list.:)

Have The Black Keys been mentioned yet? Blues rock at it's best, as only two pasty guys from Akron could do it. Rubber Factory, Their debut record, is arguably their best, and probably one of my favorite albums, period.

Just Couldn't Tie Me Down- From "Rubber Factory" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W118UmbXZHU&feature=related)

Keep Your Hands Off her- From "Chulahoma" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1TxpIrwkSk)

Goodbye Babylon- from "Magic Potion" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PV9tvcrMac)

So He Won't Break- From "Attack and Release" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdc1w8ypfVE)

Tighten up- From "Brothers" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=flkByutsgTg)

I love this thread, and my music taste is really all over the place but, just scrolled through the whole thread, and noticed a few glaring ommisions:

Radiohead - OK Computer. Easily one of the most different albums of the last 20 years. For all you Pink Floyd fans, its def worth a listen.

Pearl Jam - Ten. I've seen all of the Seattle bands listed, but not PJ. They are the longest lasting, and for good reason, great music, great shows, and just all around one of the coolest bands.

Alice in Chains - MTV Unplugged. If you love AiC, this is a MUST own.

Sparta - Wiretap Scars. Sadly these guys broke up, but this is by far their best effort, check it out if you dig hard yet melodic tunes.

Death Cab for Cutie - Codes and Keys. Latest work, pretty good listen, I've had a hard time putting it down.

Dave Matthews Band - Dave & Tim live at Reynolds College - amazing 2 disc set. The version of One Sweet World, is by far my favorite of all Dave's live stuff.

Verve Pipe - Villians - very little known band, with exception of their one hit, The Freshman. Rest of this album is amazing, and most def worth a listen.

I could go on for hours and hours, but I think I'll put some new music on my iPod.

PJ - Ten is one that i am kicking myself for forgetting!

Chris's Radiohead and AIC unplugged mentions are also great!

One of my favorite DMB albums is the live at central park 3 disk set.

"Kind of Blue" Miles Davis

Urian Heep - Demons and Wizards
Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life
Ramones - Ramones
J. Geils Band - Live Blow Your Face Out
Aerosmith - Featuring Dream On
Deep Purple - Made in Japan
Parliament - The Clones of Dr. Funkenstein
Paul Simon - Still Crazy After All These Years

The list goes on. I'm a HUGE music fan, everything from Hank Williams to Parliament, and my favorite albums change almost daily...too hard to pick one. The above are a few just off the top of my head.
