Hit the brakes.

My first reaction would be to put the car into neutral and then hit the brakes. I have been in a similar situation on a snowmobile and luckily panic did not set in....I simply hit the kill switch while jacking the brakes to stop....I was going 65mph with a sharp corner coming up and I let off the gas and the sled kept gaining speed. When I looked down the tach, it was at redline and I realized I wouldn't slow down in time to make the corner if I didn't do something NOW.
I pray sorry for those families who have lost loved one or have had loved injured. I wonder if a safety road lesson should be mandatory for drivers to prevent such an event in the future.

I'm still at a loss for words...
Apparently, you have plenty of time to dial a cell phone, tell your friends that you're in a runaway car at high speed...but you can't step on the brake pedal??
Darwin's Theory at work??
The article states 2.5 seconds and 3.3 seconds for holiding the start/stop button to shut the cars off....but this somehow was too difficult for people to do??

Yeah when I first heard if this I wondered why they just didn't put the car in neutral and use the breaks or even coast to a stop. But I do know some people that have less than zero knowledge about how an automobile works let alone how to save themselves if something unexpected were to happen. I actually talked to my fiancee about what she should do if something like this happened to her, because I think that she thinks there is a hamster running around on a wheel inside the car that makes it go.

If nothing else works, turn off the ignition.

That's my first thought. A car cannot accelerate with no power.
