View Full Version : Do we want a 2010 CA pipe?

DrDubzz
03-14-2010, 05:20 PM
Christos (Greekgodx) broached the topic to me. So if there's enough interest one or both of us will head that up.

Do you guys want a 2010 pipe? Do we want a Boswell again? Something perhaps slightly more... refined? Let me know in this thread. We'll go from there

You know I'm in.

My thoughts are we don't want to make it too expensive, but something a little more higher end would be cool.

Also interested, depending on the final price.

DrDubzz
03-14-2010, 05:59 PM
well go ahead and post up what your max price would be

for me, I don't know since it will depend when they need to be paid for. I have little to no disposable income now, but will this summer after I graduate

I passed last year due to some financial issues. But I am more than game this year.

I really wanted to get in on that quagliata pipe on ICC but didn't have any idea of what my tax return would be, well now I know so I could be game depending on price and maker.

DrDubzz
03-14-2010, 06:33 PM
Nick, I passed because I don't care for the pipe, plus I have one similar that I do care for.

I had higher hopes for the ICC pipe. But alas, we have some flexibility here.

As for ours, I would love to cap it at $100 so more people will be interested, but that really limits what we can do. But not everyone wants to shell out 150-200 bucks.

you guys just let me know, and we'll figure it out. We might be able to get RQ to do it, or the Boswells... maybe Jake Hackert, I could talk to him, but he doesn't do sandblasts that I know of. Throw out suggestions

i know spending over $100 isn't what people want to do with their money in most circumstances... but you're hamstringing yourself in choices by keeping the cost below $100. how many carvers out there make pipes, or would consider making a forum pipe of the year, that would come down to that price (other than Boswell and maybe a big company that does machine mades from europe)?

mark tinsky (http://ssl.cybersun.com/scripts/webcatalog4disapi.dll/4dcgi/Subcat?AMS~101556594~103) can get it done for barely over $125, if you want to keep the shape simple, the pipe in the smaller side (his size 4 or 5), and you get his "coral carved" finish.

another to possibly ask, ozarkmountainbriars (http://ozarkmountainbriars.com/index.htm).com's David Johnson, he's back making pipes, but i don't know how many he's making... he's famous for his "pokerdog (http://ozarkmountainbriars.com/images/pokerdawg2g.jpg)" shape, and his prices are reasonable.

just an idea... i'm not taking part, but figured i'd throw that out there.

ah, i wasn't in on last years pipe... you all did a boswell, if i remember... didn't know it was a poker.
either way, good luck with it all. i think i posted a link to something trevor talbert wrote about "fun with forum pipes"... it's a good quick read when embarking this journey, i've re-read it a few times.

I have a David Johnson pipe. It smoke really well, great grain and a very reasonable price, and I have no problem supporting a local carver.

The Boswell looks great though.

I'm going to try and get in contact with Mario Grandi. His pipes seems to review quite well, they look great, and most are under 100 bucks.

But I don't know that he'll do a club pipe, so we'll see

DrDubzz
03-22-2010, 09:30 AM
Hey, everyone do me a favor, go to Ebay, and search Mario Grandi

They have done club pipes in the past so I would like for you to take a look at their shapes and finishes etc. And see if we can find something there. They make very nice pipes for <$100, so I think everyone would be able to get in on this.

I haven't committed to anything, but they seem like a good option, let me know what you see and like. He carves about every shape so if we want a Dublin or something along those lines I'm sure it would be no problem

The only problem I can forsee, is that the carver is in Europe which would give us very little control in the way of problems or whatever, and shipping from Europe...also, iirc, I've seen a picture of a Mario Grandi that was done for a club or forum, and I don't think he embosses the name of the organization in the wood of the shank, but paints it on...wouldn't we be better off with an American carver? I'm sure there are several that would work with us...

there are plenty of great carvers in the US, but most can't do a nice sized pipe with good quality for <100 bucks

Personally, I would prefer a tinsky or something along those lines for 150-200 as this will likely be the only pipe I buy this year, but most don't want to pay that much (understandably)

I would agree on a 2010 CA pipe as long as we keep the work here in the USA (Boswell's come to mind), and would like to throw in the following idea:

A slightly bend Billiard, 6" length and bowl height around 2.25". Possibly the bowl could be 1/3 rusticated on the sides (for those who enjoy rustication)...:2

This Tanblast was done by Mark Tinsky for me a few months ago. A shade over 6 inches long, 2 inches tall, 1-1/2 inch dia with Amber stem. $185.00,
shipped. Enough of them and you may be able to get them 15 or 20 dollars cheaper.

I really like that shape but not so much the Tanblast finish. Maybe something in a partially rusticated deep coral? That being said, though, I don't know if I could afford to do one this year, so my opinion shouldn't affect what everyone does.
