SYNOPSIS:

It's 1954, and up-and-coming U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. He's been pushing for an assignment on the island for personal reasons, but before long he wonders whether he hasn't been brought there as part of a twisted plot by hospital doctors whose radical treatments range from unethical to illegal to downright sinister. Teddy's shrewd investigating skills soon provide a promising lead, but the hospital refuses him access to records he suspects would break the case wide open. As a hurricane cuts off communication with the mainland, more dangerous criminals "escape" in the confusion, and the puzzling, improbable clues multiply, Teddy begins to doubt everything - his memory, his partner, even his own sanity.

Is anyone else looking forward to seeing this movie? I think I'll get on Fandango and order my tickets NOW. :D

Caught a screener of this back in December. I have to say that I'm usually not a fan of DiCaprio but his last few have impressed me.

Having said that, probably one of his better performances and the movie as a whole is great. Scorcese departs from his usual style and actually does a pretty decent job. This is one I recommend to see at the theatre. 3.5 stars from me.

Not to totally dismiss your rating, but 3.5 stars doesn't scream 'must see' :D

Any reason for the 3.5?

Having said that, I've been looking foreword to this film for a while now.

Apparently Wolfman is plain horrible. Typically I ignore reviews from critics and most people I know, but I have not heard ONE good thing about the movie.

I am looking forward to seeing this. Not a fan of DiCrapio at all but he has made a few good movies. As for ratings? Seems like when a critic slams a movie I love it. The movies they love I think are garbage. Just like cigars, we all have different tastes.

What a goofy movie. Never let go Jack! And then she pries his dead fingers off and sends him to hell. I seem to be the only one that views the film as a statement on women's behaviors lol...Anyone else notice that she was floating on something big enough for two people? I mean especially Leonardo, he was like 5'3 in that movie.

Having said that, I've been looking foreword to this film for a while now.

I guess I should explain my own personal rating system. Since I watch so many movies and have a grip-load at home as well I'm pretty stringent when it comes to rating a movie.

Most movie offerings fall in the 2-2.5 stars rating for me. Throw away movies like Legion and the upcoming Cop Out (originally titled "A Couple of Dicks") are average forgettable movies and usually get a 2 or a 2.5 from me.

Above average movies are a 3 and above average that I think deserve a theatre visit get a 3.5

A 4 means I'll prob see it 2-3 times in the theatre and a 5 means by the time I review it I've seen it half a dozen times in the theatres, have downloaded a cam-rip that I burned to DVD and will purchase the movie on Blu Ray when it comes out and am planning where on my body to put a movie tattoo :D

As usual, no spoilers.

Leonardo DiCaprio is Deputy U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels, he and his partner Chuck are dispatched to Shutter Island, a maximum security mental institution on an island off the coast of Boston to investigate the disappearance of a dangerous mental patient. What comes next is a mind **** of twists and turns, some, which were a little obvious, and others that were totally unexpected.

Leo was on top of his game in this and played a completely believable character (you will see why I say believable when you watch the movie). Mark Ruffalo played Deputy U.S. Marshal Chuck Aule and paired with DiCaprio they made a perfect team. There was a ton a charisma between the two of them. The plot is rock solid and Martin Scorsese I believe really came out of his comfort zone with this film, it says Scorsese, but not in the sense the Departed did. It’s very different and it would be great to see him further branch out like he did with Shutter Island.

The score for this movie was perfect. Their were some pretty dramatic scenes and a few that were spooky as well, the music at times made me think the hair on my neck was going to stand up at any minute. I heard a few people say they fell asleep during this movie, that it was Leonardo DiCaprio’s worst film, etc. I don’t think that could be further from the truth, in fact I would venture to say that was one of his BEST performances to date. I would love to see Scorsese, DiCaprio, and Ruffalo back on the screen together for another film.

I give this 4.5 out of 5 stars.

I just saw it tonight and I thought it was incredible, stellar performances from all cast members IMO it is awesome when you leave a movie and look at your watch and go "wow I didn't know this was that long!!!" never once did I get bored. I highly recommend it!!!

See, to me movies aren't about the "twist" ending or figuring it out before the movie gets there. Its about the story telling and the journey you're taken on. I guess my view on movies is more about the ride than the destination.

EXACTLY!!!

Take for instance Fight Club. When Fight Club first came out I went to see it with my Dad. 45 minutes into the movie he leans over and says "I figured out what's going on" and then proceeded to not enjoy the rest of the movie. Afterwards while discussing the movie I said to him "Dad, even though you figured out the twist early on couldn't you recognize the brilliance of the storytelling for the rest of the movie? It was clearly well-done and well thought out." He just shrugged and said "Once I figured it out it just wasn't as enjoyable".

I guess that's the difference between the two groups of movie goers. Imagine our conversations after we both saw Magnolia LOL :tu

Understandable. In my opinion the trailer for the film did a disservice to the plot. But since it was pushed back by the studios to movie wasteland of February I can understand the need to draw people in.

Saw This Movie last Night With My Wife. Both Of Us Thought It Was One Of The Worst Movies We've Ever Seen. Very Slow Moving & A Ridiculous Plot. Gangs Of New York Was A Much Better Leo Movie, IMHO.

My wife and I liked this movie. It wasn't great but it was pretty damn good. I never felt like I knew what was really going on. I always had inklings as to what was going on but never really could crack the code. It was nothing like I was expecting. Leo did a great job and the music really added to the whole experience. Also, it didn't feel like a 2.5hr movie. Definitely got my moneys worth.

EDIT: I'm surprised that people here knew EXACTLY what was going on. I had a pretty good idea about some of the twists but the entire twist I didn't guess.
