They start tonight, I can't wait. I'm an olympics junkie, and in the winter I mainly follow hockey, but bob-sled, luge, skiing, it's all good, who else is excited?

I love the Winter Games. Curling Rules!!!!

Could not agree more.... When my hometown hosted the Olympics 8 years ago, I could not have cared less about the Winter Games.... Now I look forward to them....

The game that surprised me the most.... Curling.... Amazing how fun it was(is) to get the guys together, drink some frosties and watch people slide a stone down the ice....:ss

In the end, if you gave me tickets(that I could not sell) to Ice Skating & Curling and they were at the same time.....you can be assured that I'd be giving away the skating and going to watch curling.

If you don't already have your tickets I'd say good luck unless you're willing to pay EXORBINANT prices on Craigslist, etc. I had a couple friends score Class C tickets (ie. nose bleed) to the men's gold medal game that recently sold them for $2200 each, they paid $320 for them initially.

I live and work within a 10 blocks radius from the curling venue ;) Thankfully it doesn't appear to have had any affect on my daily commute or life other than all the military and police choppers buzzing around over my house.

Personally I'm looking forward to the Games and all the parties and cultural stuff associated with it. My wife and I went to Holland Pavilion (aka Heinkein House) last night and had a great time. We didn't bother trying to get tickets for the Olympics themselves, our plan was always to get tickets to some of the Paralympic events since we both find people with disabilities who are able to compete at that level far more impressive.

Luge competitor in horrific crash at Olympics

Fri Feb 12, 2010 2:11pm ESTWHISTLER (Reuters) - Georgian luge competitor Nodar Kumaritashvili was given emergency resuscitation treatment on Friday after a horrifying crash in training for the Vancouver Winter Olympics.

His sled left the track at the Whistler Sliding Center at around 90mph, according to observers, and smashed into a course side structure. He was unconscious, a Reuters reporter said.

Medics rushed to the scene to give him treatment. The incident happened hours before the Winter Games officially open in Vancouver later on Friday.

Training was immediately suspended.

Olympic officials are confirming his death :( That track is brutally fast and technical, apparently the governing body has already stated that they will not allow any future tracks to run faster than this one. The primary concern has been the bobsleigh but obviously luge and skeleton are concerns as well. I wonder if the course designers will attempt to slow the track down at all? Perhaps reduce the internal cooling a bit to soften the ice slightly?

I actually feel quite bad for the Slovak goalie, but that being said that team wasn't expected to make it into the Olympics at all so still a good showing for them considering that the US and Canadian women are really only competing against each other and are in a completely different class from the other teams.

I'd disagree too. They both skied amazingly well, Kearney just skiied that little bit better. The difference being basically the landing of Heil's second air. Disappointing that she didn't defend her gold from Torino but it's not like she choked or was robbed by the judges..... just beaten cleanly be a competitor who was better on that day.

I love the Olympics but the horrendous glut of commercials makes it impossible to watch.
During the biathlon it was 2-3 minutes of coverage followed by an equal amount of commerical time. And the 2-3 minutes ov coverage wasn't even necessarily action. Sometimes it was just announcers yakking.

Eventually, I got disgusted and turned them off. Sad that the telecasts are more about the sponsors than the competition.

Yup, Peter- that is why I don't watch them! When I lived in Europe, I spent hours in front of the idiot box watching the Winter Olympics- no commercials and no boring "background" kwatch. NBC seems to think we prefer "human interest" stories than sports action. Fogedaboutit! I used to love the skiing and jumping and skating- now it's impossible to watch a cut up presentation tattered by commercials and background stories!

They'll be fine. The team is made up almost entirely by franchise players and 35% of Team Canada roster are captains of their respective NHL teams. They're used to carrying all the fan expectations for their NHL clubs and while the Olympics adds more pressure, it's not that big a difference for professional players.

Watching the luge finals last night I saw a guy waving a DDR flag near the finish line. Ahhh, for the good old days. The Olympics just isn't the same without Commies. Back then it was easy. USA = good. CCCP and DDR = bad. Good guys waved American flags and were on the front of the Wheaties box. Bad guys looked like freakish steroid-ridden charactures of The Hulk. Especially the women. Now I don't even know most of the new "Soviet" countries. Much as we may not like the Chinese, they just don't elicit the same visceral hatred we had for the Russians and East Germans. We never had air raid drills in elementary school because the Chinese were going to blow us all to Kingdom Come.

Maybe if the Taliban fielded an Olympic team we could recapture a bit of the "Us vs. Them" of the good old days.

You know, NBC is really pissing me off. It was getting late last night, so I saw Shaun White's first run at the half-pipe, but didn't stay up to watch the second. So here I am, searching the internet for a video of it, and every single one I find is pulled due to copyright infringement. They don't have it available on the NBC site. You would almost think NBC is trying to make these olympics as inaccessible as possible.

Not that it will go anywhere, but I sent NBC a email telling them I thought their coverage was very poor and hoped ESPN gets the next contract. Why are we seeing time delayed sports for an Olympics in the same time zone as the US? To watch online you have to download M$ Silverlight and provide your cable TV account information to them, and that aint gonna happen. BUT, they cry and whine when people try to go around all the BS they setup up. I just want to click a link and watch a flash box show a sport in real time. Not hard to do for any 11th grader in high school.

You have to understand. The talking heads you see as "knowledgeable commentators" are professional readers. They just read what the writers and producers provide for them. The writers and producers are pissed off wannabee commentators but aren't photogenic enough to get in front of the camera or they have nervous tics or something. Most of them know very littler about real sports but can tell you everything you want to know about ice dancing. And, since they probably weren't living when the "Miracle on Ice" was actually played, they don't know anything more about it then the can read on Wiki.

But let me tell you how I really feel about "broadcasters"

By the way, I wouldn't call the USA defeat of Canada a miracle but I would rate it right behind the Saints beating the Colts.

Although I don't necessarily agree with the booing why would that make them tools? Passionate patriotic hockey fans............isn't emotion what makes cheering for your team the great thing about sports. As long as it isn't disrespectful I thought booing was part of the whole concept. Like taunting a goalie or yelling at the refs (without the profanity)

As a passionate fan of the game............and your neighbour to the north I..........I would respect your choice to cheer or boo for the team of your choice............without assuming you are a tool.

Yep, starting next season, if Brady gets a bloody nose, it's an automatic TD for the Pats, and the offending player becomes his personal assistant for the remainder of the season.

That's hardly unique. Soccer and rugby, the sports who's World Cup's are the 2nd and 3rd largest sporting events after the Olympics, both have blood bins. In the case of rugby there's far more minor damage like you're describing than any of the other so-called tough guy contact sports where the players hide behind padding (ie. hockey and american football).

First a skateboarder gets kicked out of the Olympic Village for "questionable" behavior involving a 20 year old woman and his bronze medal. Now Canada's Women's Hockey team is being investigated for celebrating with beer, champagne and cigars after they won the gold.

http://sports.yahoo.com/olympics/vancouver/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/IOC-to-investigate-Canadian-women-s-hockey-team-?urn=oly,224338

I guess the message the IOC is sending is that Olympic atheletes aren't allowed to party with the opposite sex (in public), party with their team members (in public), drink or HEAVEN FORBID SMOKE A CIGAR! (But they did spend $100,000 on condoms for the athletes. I guess they don't want them reproducing)

The IOC which keeps preaching about the "Olympic tradition" should consider what the true founders of the Olympics did after their games.

And be sure to look at the photos. Those Canadian women know how to party as good as they play hockey.

And I'm glad they showed their national pride and drank Canadian beer even though it taste likes moose urine. A few bottles of Trois Pistoles would have been better.

National pride wouldn't have been enough to make me drink Molson Canadian, all the generic mass market lagers like Molson Canadian, Kokanie, Labbatt Blue, etc fall under the branding of moose piss. There's a very active microbrewery industry in Vancouver and the rest of Canada that produces very good beer, it's just unfortunate that Molson Canadian gets so much press. It's sorta like saying that Budweiser is the pinnacle of American beer because it's the one that everyone knows about.

The funny thing is that they wrapped the champagne bottles in Molson Canadian labels. Considering Molson Canadian is the beer sponsor for these games I'm guessing the alcohol was all either provided by the IOC or they were instructed that anything other than Molson Canadian needed to be covered up for sponsorship reasons.

That's my favorite beer from Unibroue brewery. I alos love their Blanche de Chamblis, Fin du Monde and Maudite:D

Yep. Even us savage rednecks can appreciate the fine brews from up north. What got me started was a limited edition brew I found (and I can't remember the name right now - I think it had a 15 in the name?) a few years ago. That led me to the Trois Pistoles, Maudite, and Chambly Noire - all of which I love. I've also had the Ephemere. Didn't like it as much.

Congratulations to our Canadian brothers and sisters for an excellent olympics. The hockey final was a fitting closing for the Olympics even if the USA didn't win the gold.

Canada definitely did itself proud! :tu

Well, except for that William Shatner thing. ;) :r

Just a thought but maybe to add some more excitment to the summer games the Olympic committee should vote to include in-line roller derby as a sport. It makes more since than some of the icecapades events.

Great job Vancouver and Canada....you did yourselves proud!!!:banger

absolutely outrageous, abominable horrible job by NBC on its coverage....showing the semifinal hockey match on tape delay so as to allow some rinky dink series to be shown in its normal time slot???
:td

and then tonite to leave the olympic closing ceremony to show a half hour preview of an asinine, idiotic show with very little value....where are there heads at?...i understand prempting for local news, but that show??? i for one will never ever watch that show again, if for no other reason than out of protest...

Technically, the ceremonies were over. Did you want them to show another half-hour or so of people partying? You're right about The Marriage Ref, though. I lasted about 2 minutes before I had to change the channel. The studio audience was laughing at the stupidest sh!t, and it got annoying very quickly.

NBC's coverage of the Closing Ceremony was also on a 2 hour (or more) tape delay. The live start of the Closing was 5:30 PST and it was all finished up by about 7:30. On the plus side though, you didn't really miss much after the cutover to The Marriage Ref. Apparently someone in VANOC was given the task of listing all Canadian bands that might play (ie. lip sync) one of their songs regardless of how popular or good they are.

On behalf of Vancouver and Canada I'd like to apologize for Nickelback. Despite what Michael J Fox said, we only like to claim the good talent as our own..... unfortunately no one will claim Nickelback away from us :( :(

Also a record for total medal's won by any nation in a single winter games :tu Strangely enough if seems to depend on the newspaper, all the Canadian papers are staying you were first and we were third. All the European papers list the winner as the highest number of golds...... maybe Colbert is right and Canada is "Europe, just with normal toilets" :r

They are taking a lesson from US politicians and have learned to "spin" the story to their way of thought.

"Spiin" is hardly the exclusive domain of the US politician, they all learn it at a very early stage in their career's no matter where they're from.

Then they learn to spin their lies....the mark of a fully mature politician ;)
