Gurkha Assassin Torpedo - Any Comments?

Had you done so, I would have told you that every Gurkha I have ever tried has tasted like dirt. Not "earth", dirt.

Some people like that flavor profile in their cigars, I do not. my :2

Well that is not good. However, I would like more input than just one person. They were relatively cheap and I wanted to try them. If they suck, I will let them age in my humi.

I have smoked several Gurkhas, and I too thought they all tasted like "dirt". Not trying to be sarcastic, that is the actual flavor profile on my palate. I am not sure if I have had the Assassin, but if I haven't, I can guarantee you I won't.

Ill add some input. FWIW, I don't like Gurkhas at ALL. Actually, I could post what I really think, and probably piss off all the Gurkha lovers. Are there any Gurkha lovers?:r But what really counts is what you like. Its your palate, and you should only smoke what you like, not what other people tell you. Try them out, and if you like them, then thats great:tu Also, another thing to consider, is that are palates change and our perception of what tastes good changes over time.

I had ordered some Oliva G's, El Baton's (Had plenty of friends who found them Fantastic) and some Saint Luis Reys, so I figured wtv, I'll throw some Gurkhas and test my luck....

Yeah, I ordered them from Atlantic, will be getting them shortly and of course reviewing them. There are absolutely 0 reviews of them on the net from what I see, unless someone has a website with them available as a review. I just heard mixed comments from people. I guess I will just have to man up.

I've tried a hand full of Gurkha's and have had mixed experiences. Her are some of them.

Legend- Dirt and gas, it sucked
Blue Steel- Musky, it was somewhat good
Dos Capas- Sweet but WAY too mild
Grand reserve- Mild, one dimensional, but enjoyable for half of the stick
Black Dragon- I used to like them a lot at first, now I think they're okay

I wouldn't pay much for any of the Gurkha's I've enjoyed and wouldn't buy the others at all. The Assassin on the other hand is pretty good IMO. I went to a tasting at West Coast recently and was handed one. I enjoyed it. It wasn't like any other Gurkha I've had. I even picked up two of them to get a raffle ticket for their drawing. It was actually complex and quite strong. I enjoyed it and would smoke it again.

The ash from cigar's is excellent for tomatoes but the rest of the cigar should stay away from your garden. I'm sure you're joking but if you don't like them I might not mind a trade down the road or you can donate them to the troops.

I've had a Grand Age that had decent flavors. Too bad they superglued the band to the wrapper and it basically destroyed the stick when I had to remove it.

Carlo, like most inmates here, I don't care for Gurkhas. Do they taste like dirt? I'm not sure I would go as far as saying they taste dirt. Just not my flavor profile. Okay back to these cigars!

Like others, most of my experience with with Gurkha have been blah. But, for some reason, I like the Nepalese Warrior for an afternoon smoke. You just never know!

The Evil is the except for I think the wrapper or filler. I'm pretty sure it's that the Evil doesn't contain the Indonesian portion of filler so it's less full bodied. I think...

I personally like the Evils a lot and the Assassin is not bad either. The Evil is not as strong as the Assassin.

The Assassin has a very strong barnyard smell and flavor, definitely not for everyone...

With that said, the problem I have with Gurkha is consistency. Some of them are good and others from the same box can be bad. The construction on nearly all of them leaves a lot to be desired.

Pretty much every line I've had has had some kind of burn problem. Some run, some unravel and I had one Genghis Khan that actually blew up almost like it had a novelty charge in it.

The only lines I have not had burn problems on are the Shaggys and the Dargonfires; both have a shaggy foot.

I was repeating what Gurkha claims. They say the Evil is "pure strength". I think they both are very bland.

This made me laugh.

I have a few Gurkhas, and I like 'em. I think they do tend to have a heavy earthiness that distinguishes them from other cigars. They are not spicy, like a Pepin or Tat. They are not sweet, or cedary. They are earthy. They even smell earthy, like the forest floor.

They are probably not for everyone, but tastes vary, which is why cigar smoking can be so inclusive.

I have had the Legend, Ancient Warrior, and Class Regents.

Fratello, taste is taste. Even IF everybody tells you they taste like dirt, you might just like them! I am not familiar with this Gurkha, but I know the Regent box pressed is one of my favorites. Since you didn't pay too much for them, great! Hopefully you'll like them! Speriamo bene!

I am pretty new to smoking cigars so take this for what it is worth but I had a few Gurkhas in some samplers. I always here terrible things about them. I usually tend to want to like something that every one piles on. I did try a one that just said 1887. It was actually a really tasty cigar. I then decided to try another. I picked the Gurkha Legend. I threw it out after smoking about 1 inch. First and only cigar I could not smoke. I really wanted to like it but it literally tasted like dirt. I thought people meant it tasted bad like "dirt". It really tastes like dirt tastes.

As always... You may love it. Different strokes...

Just checked the Gurkha site... It was the Red 1887 that I really enjoyed.

I may catch flak for this, but I don't care:
While there are many Gurkhas I've not had (they make, what? 3,200 different cigars now?), I've really enjoyed several of the ones I've smoked, including Regent (Toro, Torpedo), Legend (Toro, Churchill), Doble Maduro (Toro), Fuerte (Toro, XO), & Beast (Toro). On the other hand, I've never spent more than $2.20 (with shipping) for any Gurkha I've had. At that price point, they're worth it. I'd never consider them at regular retail prices.
Not had the Assassin or thousands of others Gurkha makes, but the point of this is that they make so many, the odds are there are some you will enjoy.

Don't let the masses here dissuade you. YOU like them or you don't.

I do not stick to a particular brand/label. Yes, I do like Cubans, but I won't only buy Cubans. In fact, I prefer NC cigars. Just a preference :) However, it is a good think that accessing Cubans in Montreal is excessively easy. Cigar Lounges usually exclusively stock cubans.

Gurkhas have been hit or miss for me, but the one I have always enjoyed is the Triple Ligero.

I completely forgot about this thread. It has been a couple of months that I have had them, and I have smoked a bit more than five of them. I actually like them. They are not my favorite sticks, but I do enjoy smoking them. What a good flavor profile they have. I would definitely buy some more. Here is a little review.

Gurka Assassin Torpedo Review (6.50x53)

Taste: You get a nice peppery, earthiness and woody taste. The stick smells like pure barnyard. It is pretty much the same throughout the whole cigar, but it is a nice combination of flavors. I almost forgot, you also get bursts of caramel in the cigar at a couple of spots which is very enjoyable. The cigar is also sweet and somewhere in there I can taste the Molases. (3.5/4)

Body: Wow, these things are a powerhouse. They might be the strongest cigars I have smoked. On the flavor profile, I would consider them medium to upper medium, but the kick of tobacco is out of this world. I would not recommend this for beginners, but rather experienced smokers. (2.5/3)

Construction & Burn: Very nice oily wrapper, also quite dark (almost black). Veins are visible, but do not ruin the nice looking wrapper at all. The stick is nicely packed and resistant to damage if dropped etc. The draw has been good for the most part. Only 1 of my cigars had a little tight draw, which lasted less than 10 minutes. The burn is also good. As some might have mentioned, it may burn out of place sometimes, but it clearly corrects itself. (2.5/3)

Total Score = 8.5/10

I am not sure I agree with this statement. I have had cigars that I was really unimpressed with when I first purchased them and after 6 months in the humidor they were actually pretty good.

Just to concur and review my own review about the Gurkha Assassin Torpedo, I have decided to smoke one tonight and see if my thoughts on it remain the same. I will posts my thoughts on it again once I am done.

This cigar was just as great as I described. I also got hints of dark, strong espresso and some floral flavors. Just splendid! However, the burn was a bit messed up and the ashes were flaky, not a big issue though. The experience was not ruined whatsoever. I almost burned my fingers smoking this to the bud.
