If so, you might be able to make the new owner an offer

This is why I don't understand art. $105 million? Seriously?

Oh C'mon...you don't see the minute details?
What about the skillfully hand crafted angles?
Better yet, the wonderful way the statue seems to represent everything about mankind?
No?
Me either. :r

Its 'life size', thus making it worth the money. Duh :bh

It's got to be some sort of investment and who knows? Maybe a museum did buy it.
But my problem comes in when critics say "an original pice of art". Have these same yuppies ever seen cave drawings? The same lines and designs were used thousands of years ago. So Giacometti's whole idea of "modern man" to me is shot out the window.

Art is always an investment when you have the capital to play at the level this piece is apparently at. If the new owner wants to sell it in 5 years they're going to get at least the $105 million they paid for it so it's really just a means of storing your money in a medium that you find visually appealing.
The only debate is whether it's actually visually appealing. To my eyes it's not, but it's not my $105 million on the table so my opinion on it's aesthetics really doesn't mean much.

Not seeing it? Looks like something you'd see at a craft store in the accessory aisle.
IMHO

"The sculpture by the 20th century Swiss artist, considered an iconic Giacometti work as well as one of the most recognizable images of modern art, was sold to an anonymous bidder by telephone, the auction house said."
Somebody was drunk dialing again.
And somebody's wife is gonna be pissed.
