This evening I received this email from one of our men in Afghanistan. I edited the names as I don't know who may know this man.

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED
Caveats: FOUO

Unfortunately several days ago we lost Captain Dan W**** to an IED explosion in the Southeastern part of Zabul, Afghanistan. *I know he loved the packages that you sent because he was definitely a cigar lover. *

1SG Anthony F**** will be leaving country soon so he has requested that if there are any more packages could you please send them to Captain Derek H**** at the same address. *Sir we thank you for your support and appreciate what you have done for us.

V/R

SFC (P) Matthew E. H****
Combined Team Zabul Operations SGM

To my knowledge this is the first time this has happened to one of our men that we send cigars to. I will provide more details as they become available.

God bless our men and women in harms way.

Prayers and thoughts Sent...

It is sad to lose a soldier and fellow BOTL, but it does the heart good to know that we all directly affected this man's life before his untimely passing. He has seen AND smoked cigars directly out of our own humidors and had a couple hours of restful happiness- a small escape from the everyday stresses of life as a soldier- because of our good deeds. If we can't fight the good fight over there with those honorable American soldiers, we should at very least ensure a few moments of relaxation for them. Like I said for what they do for us, it's the least we could do.

May G-d watch over his family and fellow soldiers during this trying time.

This was written for Submariners lost "on eternal patrol"; but it's the only appropriate memorial I know:

”There is a port of no return, where ships
may ride at anchor for a little space.
And then some starless night the cable slips,
leaving only an eddy at the mooring place.
Gulls veer no longer, Sailor rest your oar.
No tangled wreckage will be washed ashore.” :usa:salute:

I feel for the families of the fallen, as an ex-service man myself who saw combat in the Falklands and the 1st Gulf Conflict as well as other active duty roles, my head and heart goes out them all. I have a brother out there in Afghan at the moment and a front line Officer. British Officers in this day and age lead from the front, by example.
