View Full Version : The 5 stick problem

0002S

PROBLEM:

You will be out of town for 5 days and want to carry and smoke 1 cigar a day. You will be able to set aside .45 - 1.5 hrs to enjoy the cigar. You can bring 5 of the same, 5 different, or any combination in between. You will be smoking outside in good warm weather.

BUT:

1. You cannot guarantee your meal before. (ex. It could be McDonald or a great Steak)

2. You cannot guarantee your drink with the cigar.

QUESTION:

What 5 cigars do you bring with you? What is the reasoning of the 5 choices given the parameters of the problem?

Is price and rarity a concern or are you talking about every day cigars?

This sounds like an interesting scenario...

Is price and rarity a concern or are you talking about every day cigars?

This sounds like an interesting scenario...

No, not really

Price is relative to each individual, but I'm guessing that most are going to lean to everyday cigars that are in their price range.

Rarity again would be based on the individual and whether or not they would want to smoke a rare cigar without real control of the smoking environment.

To make is simple:

Nothing too rare or pricing, but really it's your call.

I'd just go with my usual suspects. Oliva V, DPG blue, Tat Noella, DPG JJ, and a Tat Angeles. I'd never complain about smoking any of those...

If I were going on a trip I would probably take at least 2 of my favorite sticks and 3 of the everyday variety.

So I would do a Liga Privada No. 9 Robusto Oscuro and a Padron 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo Maduro for my nice sticks.

For quicker, less expensive smokes I would do a Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Petit Corona, Tatuaje Noellas and a Gurkha Black Dragon Robusto.

A good mix of strengths, brands, flavors, sizes and prices.

I actually deal with this problem every week. I travel Mon - Thu, just about every week all year. I usually fill the 5-ct humi with whatever strikes me as interesting at the time on Monday morning. Sometimes it's the good stuff. Sometimes it's the everyday sticks.

Regardless, they are enjoyable after a long day.

OK, so I'll play once nicely.

These are all things that I can smoke in the time constraints, as I usually savor my cigars and so they often run longer on burn time than many others.

Oliva V Lancero - great anytime, and goes with most foods.
Oliva Connecticut Lonsdale - I'm really grooving on these lately, and they fit well with most of the beverages I'd enjoy sans alcohol, and many that I'd enjoy with.
Taboo HSG Robusto - Great cigar, anytime.
Montecristo #4 - Goes with anything.

Last year I went to Florida for 7 days. I took 20 cigars. Having the right choice is never an option if you take enough ammunition.

But currently I would take:

01 Cohiba Lancero - loving this cigar right now.
01 QdO Corona - Great morning cigar
98 Cohiba Esplendido - Do I have to explain that one lol.
09 Boli Especiale #2 - Another favorite cigar for me lately
1994 - Whenever I go on a trip I always take a special cigar for every 3-4 days, this would be the special one now.

What makes Jeff an expert? If Mo had spoken for them, as you previously indicated, that would be meaningful. But I could show that photo to Gary Pesh, managing partner of Olde Virginia Tobacco which is either the 3rd or 4th largest chain in the US and he's been in the business over 20 years. However he'd readily admit he has no information in these circles.

Being in the business doesn't indicate he has any insight into the legitmatacy or provenence of this box.

I'd have to agree. I go to the Local hangout to smoke a couple, and bring 5 or 6 in a ziplock baggie.

Otherwise, I'd have to go to storage and select 5 random sticks.
Every smoke is special, and so is day I enjoy it.

If I scroll up it appears that Mitchell himself believes the two of you had a completely different conversation.

Jeff can buy his preembargos at a Christies auction or from Mo. Both would provide you everything needed to prove you had pre-embargo cigars. Using either source does not make you an expert. In fact I'd say that if its not a case (as with Mo) that you recall one thing and he recalls another the fact that Mo, a well recognized expert believes the box not to be legitamate may be a clear indicator of Jeff's lack of expertise.

Also did a flip through of the MRN and no mention of them there.

Nobody thinks you are a liar, just misinformed and duped into thinking you got the real thing. It smarts when that happens and it's happened to many, many of us. It was a gift and, if the original owner didn't know, it's the thought that counts.

Well, at this point it doesn't matter what Mitchell said before since he came to this thread and stated his opinion clearly. He didn't say whether the cigars looked authentic or not, he stated that any box of Davidoff's that says "clube" on it is definitely fake. Are you suggesting he's changing his opinion based on the statements of others here? Why are you questioning his credibility if you wanted to use him as a reference to validate your cigars in the first place? Nobody is calling you a liar here, they are just pointing out facts that are not adding up.

Also, Davidoff is a post-embargo brand established in 1969, so no US vendor would be doing any sales of Cuban Davidoffs, therefore to suggest that they are familiar with those cigars based on sales of pre-embargo cigars is moot. We're not questioning your honesty nor that of whoever you got the cigars from, but unless you can demonstrate to us provenance and where they originated from, at this point the cigars look dubious at best.

the cigars are not fictional. they may be counterfeit, and even still, i'm gonna smoke 'em. but not fictional.
i have no desire to show provenance here, because i'm not trying to sell them.

I think we all know that. What everyones saying is just that they are not what they are puported to be or portrayed to be.

If you bring Big B roses he will slap you in the face, it better be a bouquet of Lanceros.

Here is what I would bring,

#9 Robusto
1997
Cohiba Petite Belicoso Sun Grown
Altadis Siglo II Tubo
Pre-Embargo El Buho Blanco

OK, the problem is your limitations.

I go to a pastor's conference for 4 days - will probably be able to smoke 3 cigars - so I bring a dozen. :D

When I am in that situation I usually take 15 sticks so I can choose...

Aso gives you a few to share should the occasion arise.

BUT since you said 5.....

CC LGC (any)
RASS
MAG 50
Oliva V lancero
Padilla Obsidian
