View Full Version : When do you own a box?

According to Addiction's wording, if you consume 1 cigar out of a box, you no longer have a BOX.
For example, he has 5 full intact boxes of Cohiba Reservas, and 1 open box.
Now MOST of us would say he has 6 boxes, but Addiction is VERY specific in his wording and says he only has 5 boxes.
Is his math or wording correct?
If his wording is true, then I only have 3 boxes.
I tried using that Fuzzy Math with my wife http://www.internationalcigarclub.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gifhttp://www.internationalcigarclub.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gifhttp://www.internationalcigarclub.com/forums/images/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif
Yeah, she didn't buy it.
So, if I open a PSD4 box and consume 1 or 2 cigars, do I still have a box?

Prime example of the old adage (correctly worded, Adam of Leeds, Yorkshire will back me up on this one....)
You can't eat your cake and have it too.....
(i.e. American way of saying it is "you can't have your cake and eat it too", which is absurd since if you have the cake, of course you can eat it, however the correct adage states you cannot eat the cake and also have it.)
Hope that clears this mess up!!!

If you sold 21 cigars as a box, and that box of cigars started with 25, you would get flamed over it. So clearly less than the full compliment isn't a box.

A diesel train left the station traveling north 1.5 hours before a freight train. The freight train traveled in the opposite direction going 6 km/h faster then the diesel train for two hours after which time the trains were 312.3 km apart. Find the diesel train's speed.

A box of cigars is a box of cigars if it's full of the cigars that came in it.
If it's been opened, then it's a full open box of cigars.
If I sell a box of 2006 Anejos and some are 2005, it ain't a box of 2006 Anejos.
Once it's empty, it's just a box.
For me, it's time to get another box once the first one comes out. That way the others are getting ready for when the open box is getting smoked.

:tpd: For the sake of transactions.
To my own personal stock keeping:
If it's only missing 3 or fewer, it's still a box.
If it's short a 5er or more, then it's most of a box.
Obviously, if approximately half the original number remain, it's half a box.
If there's less than 1/3 of the original number, I have none... and an excuse to go shopping. :D
Here's the brainbender: If I have two boxes of the same cigar (both date & factory stamps are identical), does combining two partial boxes mean I once again have a box?

Is this a partial box of cigars or partially a box of cigars?
Is it even a box at all?
Does this person even have cigars?
Is it half full or half empty, if he once had another box to go with this once use to be box?
Could these Anejos be too old to qualify as cigars and now should be called vintage?
Does a box of vintage qualify as a box of cigars?
Does a box that once housed cigars and is now empty still qualify as a box of cigars or is it just a box that WAS for cigars?

Shading is just for presentation.
Many boxes, in spite of color segmentation have various shades within it.
In fact, many boxes have had one shade on the top row with yet a different shade on the bottom row.

This is a weird topic. The arguement is one of semantics...i would classify a box of cigars as one full of cigars. But too each their own. This will probably be as varied as peoples tastes in cigars.

Obviously, this is a truism. And, were I to say "I just bought 3 boxes of Punch Rotschilds, you'd assume I have 150 cigars."
However, were I to say, "I bought 3 boxes of cigars last month - one Punch Rothschilds, one Oliva O Coronas, and one AF Chateaus." One may or may not assume they are still full. However, I have the boxes - they are in my humidor - and some are more full than others. Do I have boxes of those cigars? Yes! With the cellophane off, most who would look into my coolerdor would assume they are not full boxes.
If people come into my garage, they will see many cigar boxes, but they assume they hold many things other than cigars.
And, when I go to sell cigars, I'd say, "I have a box 11/20 of Oliva O Rothschilds for $XX.00." Or, "I have a full box of Oliva O Rothschilds for $XX.00."
I think we could be straining at grammatical gnats here. Most would define what they mean by "a box of cigars" as they state it.
Peace of the Lord be with you.

After careful thought, I want to thank all in this thread.
I feel confident I can now face my wife and make a solid argument why I need to buy more cigars.
Clearly, I now understand that I don't have the number of boxes she sees and thinks I have. What I have is half of what she thinks I have, which is twice as many as she cares to see.
So.....I will either be back around soon posting, with an accumulated true number of boxes of cigars as has now been clearly defined OR I will be dead somewhere. If the latter, please note it was my wife that did it.:r

So I gather the critical issue here is a box OF cigars or a box WITH cigars.

If we are about to herf, then I have boxes of cigars that there are still enough of to be in the boxes. If I were to sell or trade them, they would have to be full. If we are talking about my favorites, then it doesn't matter how many are left if I like them enough to be always buying more, there will always be a box.

I keep all cigars in the box they came in when I bought them . If there is 5 left they stay in the box and still take up a box space . Only after they move to the singles tray does the box go away , helps with keeping box codes straight . His way seems very technical but I do see where he is coming from . :ss

I see Addiction's point, though it is kinda splitting hairs. I always just make it clear by using the word full, like:
"I want a FULL CAB of Tat Verocu East Side."
But I always estimate when I'm just figuring things out in my head or talking to people. I might say "I have like 4 boxes WORTH of Padilla Signature 1932s," meaning around 100 sticks--even though they were purchased in 5, 10, and 20-packs and not actual full factory boxes!
