View Full Version : Surgery tomorrow

It sucks getting older.
I am going to get a shoulder job done tomorrow morning. A "Bankhart repair" which will fix my shoulder socket so that it will quit dislocating and a "distal claviculectomy" which is also called "acromioclavicular resection" because the end of my collar bone is arthritic and impinging on everything in there. Search those terms (I have) and you will come up with too much information.
Three hour arthroscopic operation which I can go home from. They tell me that PT will start within two weeks, a lot sooner than when I had my rotator cuff repair. I don't look forward to the operation but I am ready to be able to use my arm to it's fullest again. The clinic and doctor I go to are very good so I am not worried about the outcome.
I have not weight trained in many years but I think it may have contributed to the arthritis. The dislocation is just repeated injury that never healed right.
I don't know if they will allow me to smoke cigars while I am healing. If it will slow the healing then I will have no problem abstaining. But I will have lots of free time to kill.
Wish me luck.

Best of luck Lance. I know all about arthritis, and hope they get you fixed up.
This getting older stuff does pretty much suck, but I suppose it beats the alternative. ;)

I can imagine shoulder dislocation :( chit; my right hip will 'lock up' on occasion, and I'll have to continue the motion I was making so it pops right again. Damn steel rods. Chiropractor loves me to pieces though :D
Arthritis, thank God that's one thing I don't have...I may get RA though, but with my aches and pains, I'd hardly notice a difference.
Nice to see your issues can be taken care of :tu good luck.
And as for getting old, I just read recently that not only do those of us with cerebral palsy age prematurely because we put forth 3 - 5x the physical effort, etc. than anyone without a handicap , but our depression rate is 3 - 4x higher; not because of the disease's severity, it's based on how well a person copes.
Coping with any problem in a positive light, and staying optimistic has scientifically shown itself to aid the healing process of an injury - almost 100 percent sure on quoting that one verbatim.
So keep smiling, and shop online while you recover. Good luck.

Thanks for your prayers. As soon as I can sit and type I'll be back. I want to see if the doc can take some pics or even a movie. I already have the MRI data and a program that reads it. I never stop being interested in everything.

The surgery went really well. My whole right arm and chest is still vey numb from the nerve block. The doc only had to shave the bone spurs frm my collar bone, instead of removin the end of it. I like that because it leaves it structurally stronger.
I'm not looking forward to the nerve block wearing off but the doc pxed percocet 10/325s which are pretty strong. I'll see how that goes.
Typing one handed is a drag.
Thanks again for all the good thoughts and prayers.

Here are some pics the doc took from inside. You can see how he gathered up some of the extra loose ligament to make the labrum thicker. This will make it harder for the arm (the round surface in the picture) to come loose from the socket (towards the bottom of the first four pictures). The first four were taken from inside the shoulder socket. The last two are from inside, under the collar bone, looking up.
