El Triunfador also.
I absolutely love these but the price tag keeps me from having them in a regular rotation. The worst stick in '09 for me had to be a Diamond Crown Maximus Robusto. I thought the first one was a fluke but the second one was just as unimpressive as the first.

Funny how one man's meat is another man's poison. I loved the Camacho Liberty 2009. My biggest disappointments are both popular smokes, and I've loved EPCs earlier work, but I have had rotten luck with both the LGC Artesanos de Miami and the new EP Carillo Edicion Inaugural.

now that I'm giving it some thought, I didn't have any cigars this year that were God awful or hideously overpriced.

biggest disappointment?

Cabaiguan

It was not a bad cigar at all and I smoked the whole thing. It was just sooo mild that I couldn't get enough flavor for my tastes, and I like mild cigars. :(

It didn't help matters that my expectations were sky high based on the universally positive feedback regarding this line.

I have got my flak jacket and kevlar helmet on in preparation for this so go at it. I purchased several Taboo Cigars and was highly dissapointed after some hype here. Especially the LR Havana, thing fell part as I smoked it. No construction issues with others but no excitment in the taste either. Sorry but that is just my :2 worth on the smokes. Now as to the Company and folks that run it they are first class and service is excellent so nothing personal just not wild about the Taboo Cigars. As they always say though like what you smoke and smoke what you like - everybody likes something different. Also not a real high priced cigar either so no big $ let down.

Another major let down was the La Traviata, man there was no excitement there and they always get great reviews.

Drac, Boris, Black Tubo, Cain, all of the new Gurkha's, Monte Open, any nc by Altadis and as always, Opus.

Mr.Goodfella
01-07-2010, 07:29 PM
I thought I would be the first one to call out the Drac, Boris, and Black tubo but Chutney Lovebusciut beat me to it. After last years Frank release I had real high hopes for the Drac, then I found out that they would release an undressed version of the Frank so I figured oh boy! What a bunch of poo, and then to top it off he puts out a Black tubo that totally sucks, no flavor, won't stay lit, blah. Other than those I would agree with Cain, Cain F, Diamond Crown (all of them), Opus X (just this years batch), and even though it got good marks, I hated the Padron 45th maduro (I tossed it after 2").

I'm surprised you guys didn't like the El Triumfador. I didn't like it either, but I thought I was the only 1...

In my experience, nearly every Tatuaje product needs to rest for several months if not longer. Some people like them fresh I suppose, which is why he releases them as such, but I think they're better rested.

The first time I had an El Triunfador, I was VERY underwhelmed. It just didn't have much flavor. Then I had one with a year of age ... WOW, what a difference! The same basic flavors were there, but just a lot stronger and it was a really, really great cigar.

Like the La Riqueza, the El Triunfador is best on a clean palate.

I used to smoke a lot of Fuente stuff but as my tastes changed and I tried other cigars I found I do not like Dominican tobacco as a general rule. I still like an aged WOAM & Anejo 46 & 77.

My biggest disappointments have been any Tat, major hype little substance. I love Nic tobacco but these just don't do it for me. I did have a El Triunfador that was good but the others left me thinking.

I dont go for the new hot sticks any more. I wander around the stuff that has a good following.

I land on one, smoke a box or two, then move onto something else, smoke a box or two.

The most overrated thing I smoked was a freebie. I got an MX2 from the rep. Eh. Nothing to get worked up over.

Something I did like but is way over priced was the Zin Scepter series.

They were nice sitting a relaxing with a beer or bourbon cigars but priced like they were celebration cigars.

I've only been smoking since Dec 2008, so everything was new for me in 2009. That's a short list for as many cigars as I smoked. OH...and an OR Opus RdC at a charity herf in Kingston, NY last summer. Amazing herf!!! (major kudos to the crew at Uptown Cigar, and all who pitched in) But all of the Opus OR's turned out to be fakes. Good thing...cause I wasn't impressed... :r

just curious if it was the '09 or the '03

The '09 was one of my favorite NCs of the year and by far my favorite Tat of all time. I bought a '03 hoping for the same result and was really disappointed. It tasted just like a regular Tat brown without any sharpness to the flavor. Dull and sweet would be a perfect description.

So I smoked one back then (1 year ago) and was not impressed, especially for the money. Then yesterday I remembered that I had one more aging in the humi. I smoked it and guess what? No magic. No $11 magic for sure. It was an okay cigar that I would put on par with a gran habano. I'd say it should have been priced @ $4.

Anything from Avalon...I'm surprised the World Health Organization and the CDC would allow something like these to even be called a cigar and then that anyone could even sleep at night after selling them to someone...I would smoke Cremosas all day before smoking these

I hate to say a cigar is bad. I feel they are a lot like colors... There are no bad ones just personal preference.

That being said, I just smoked a Graycliff 1666. It was very light in weight and the draw was like pulling through a paper towel tube. It felt like it contained half the tobacco of a regular cigar. I did not enjoy the flavor either.

I got it in a sampler and figured it was a cheap cigar they included in the sampler to get rid of it. I just looked online and could not believe it is such an expensive cigar.

It does get good reviews. Maybe it is just me.

This is a very strange topic seeing how the beauty of cigars is that there are so many kinds because we all have different tastes. That being said I hope that those new to cigar smoking realize these posts are merely opinions and hope they do not influence new cigar enthusiasts from trying cigars that some here have trashed. That being said; I hate CC Montecristo #2...I've had more than I can count, and yes they were the real thing, but I would never post a bad review of the MC2CC knowing that it's not a bad cigar, it's just not to my liking.
Almost every major stick has been trashed on this thread so that goes to show that it is all a matter of taste and opinion.
So; I'm not trying to be the self righteous defender of every cigar ever made, or poohing on anyone who has voiced their opinion...
...only to speak to the noobs to take these posts with a grain of salt and if you want to try a stick that got trashed in this thread, go for it, it may end up being your favorite daily smoke!
The main reason I subscribed to this forum is because, unlike those other forums, people here don't dog and trash what others may like...I hope that doesn't change.
My :2 that I'll probably catch hell for...but hell's not such a bad place; I hear they let you smoke there!:fl

Good post Zulu. Was thinking the same thing.

I've also had one bad smoke from a box of great ones, it's crazy how things go. I would never write off a single cigar from one bad experience. Also agree with personal taste. When I worked at a tobacco shop I enjoyed learning peoples pallets and suggesting cigars. The majority of the time I could hit the nail on the head but every now and again I would suggest a stick that someone didn't dig at all.

Good points Zulu. I have always said smoke what you like and like what you smoke. (even after the Gurkha blind taste test debacle). However I think the portion of your above would be more aptly put to say:

People here don't trash the members themselves for liking certain cigars over others. I can trash a cigar all day long, but I wouldn't do the same to the person smoking it. To each their own. :ss

For me I smoked a couple RP Olde World maduros that I really just didn't like. Also didn't like the RP sungrown, quit on my second one halfway through.

Surprised to see the Tabaco Baez SF mentioned. Was it really so bad that even $3 wasn't worth it?

alright, here it goes...
I purchased like 12 Pinar Del Rios from FSS over two months ago...they came in a sampler...there were exclusivos, Havana and Oscuro..
They were soaking wet when i got them, so I dry boxed for a few days, and smoked a few..most of which I ended up being tossed after less than an inch into the cigar..
So, I thought, "maybe they're still too wet" so i put the remainder in my humidor and let them sit for a couple months at 65% RH..
I tried smoking a Havana, actually two of them, and I swear, I thought that maybe the wrappers and binders were treated with a flame retardant!!
they would not burn! I had to touch them up about every two minutes...
The aroma was good, but they wouldn't burn...!!!
the oscuro had the same problems.
the exclusivo did not have the burn issues, but I rate that cigar as mediocre at best.

Everything I had from Alec Bradley (Tempus, FB, Maxx) except for the Tempus Magistri Maduro.

Also the LGC Series R #7 Maduro was one of only 3 cigars I have ever put down early.

The other 2 were not smoked in 2009 so I will not include them.

Haha, sounds like my issue too... Bought two fivers after hearing so much about them and the price was great at Famous... Had a great taste, just couldn't get the dumb wrapper to agree with me. Dryboxed one for a few days and it was a bit better, but still annoying. Months later after sitting, they're smoking ok. Got one left, but doubt I'll revisit once it is gone. Not a bad smoke at all if you can get it working right, though can't tell you when that will be!

Hmmm.

This will seem odd, because I gave this cigar a very high rating, like 9.3 if I remember.

However I would say the honor goes to the Cohiba Gran Reserva. I just don't get a $100 fresh cigar when I can get an aged OR Sig VI (assuming you can find them) or an aged Sig VI from the Cohiba X humi for a much much much cheaper price and be essentially smoking the same thing.

Exclusivity and marketing to snob appeal, pure and simple. It's the same concept that drives super-car manufacturer's to produce hyper-car versions of their standard lines. A Reventon is just a Murciélago with a body kit, flat paint job and a trick digital dash yet Lamborghini priced it 4.5 times higher because of the extremely limited production.

There are a lot of people that buy into the marketing hype that surrounds brands like Cohiba, Opus X, Macallan, etc and will pay prices that are exorbitant compared to those products actual value just to have them. The Grand Reserva just takes it to a whole new level for Habanos SA. Interestingly enough, with the one exception of the 2003 LE Cohiba DC, I have yet to have one of these over-hyped products that even comes close to living up to it's billing.

Actually I've had several of those things i think are worth it. I love all Cohibas and would say that certianly the Cohiba Middies, Reservas, DCs, Sublimes and Sublimes Extras are all worth the mark up. I'd even say that the Gran Reserva is worth some markup, just not the markup they are asking.

Fair enough. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that their bad smokes (Cohiba as a brand, not specifically the Grand Reserva), far from it. Just that in my experience I've found that they just aren't the be-all and end-all of cigars that popular culture holds them to be and just can't hold up to the hype. There are several cigars that I'd choose every time over every Cohiba except the 2003 DC LE, that's the great thing about personal tastes... they're different for everyone :D

That is something I love about this site!

I have yet to see anyone give another person grief for enjoying a cigar they can't stand, unlike some other sites I have lurked around.

There are cigars in this thread that people really dislike and I love. I'm sure it goes both ways...

I've been highly underwhelmed by all the Opus X I've smoked. Admittedly that's been a small sampling but it's been enough to know that, at the price point they've set, I have no desire to continue trying to find one that's worth it.

And Macallan is pretty damn good scotch, tho I personally prefer JW Blue.

I've had some of expressions from Macallan's Fine Oak line that I quite liked but I've found that, IMHO, in general Macallan is very much like Cohiba: a decent middle of the road product that's been over-hyped for so long by the marketing Mad Men that it's acquired a cultural status and price point that's well out of touch with what it really deserves on merit alone. To me Glenfarclas is the benchmark for what a heavily sherried Speyside should be.

I've not had JW's Blue but as a general rule I don't usually pay much/any attention to blends. My all time favourite whisky is Longrow 14yr with Bowmore 15yr Mariner, Bowmore Dawn, Laphroaig 15yr and Glen Ord 12yr. Ardbeg 10 and Lagavulin 16 aren't too bad either ;)

What sucked the most for me was the Summer Salamon Sampler from CI . Good thing it was a gift . The Man O War , Patel , Caney and Africa were all horrible . Sitting on the others as time and temperature don't allow for such big smokes right now . Hopefully the Padilla's and Sol Cubano's redeem the sampler .

I felt the same way about Opus for a long time. Than I smoked an Opus that I let rest for 3 years because that's how disappointed I was the first couple times I smoked them that this other one in the humi just kept getting pushed to the back. I have to say that with some age on it, it was downright awesome. One of the best smokes I ever had. So for years I thought I was lucky in not having to chase down Opus' every year and pay the high price tag for them and than I smoked this aged stick and now I have a bunch sitting in the humi taking a long nap after being in the hunt for awhile. Fortunately, I still don't go nuts trying to find them as I have a hard time going crazy to pick something up knowing I will only stick it in the back of the humi to not be seen for a couple years.
