View Full Version : Heritage Dr. Pepper and Throwback Mtn. Dew
Ok, so I just stumbled on these two the other day, Heritage Dr. Pepper and Throwback Mtn. Dew - I guess it's the old formulas made with real sugar instead of that HFCS **** they put in everything these days.
I'm not much of a soda guy, I probably drink less than 10 sodas or other soft drinks per year, but I bought one small bottle of each (16oz?). Tried the Mtn. Dew today, seems cleaner in finish than HFCS Mtn. Dew, but, at as few sodas per year that I drink I'm really not sure.
Any soda guys out there try this stuff? Your comments?
PS: thinking about getting a case of Heritage Dr. Pepper solely to make BBQ sauce with...
I tried one of the MD throwbacks a while back and it kinda tasted funny to me. Prolly need to try a couple more.

Both the Throwback Mountain Dew and Pepsi are good. Can't say they are significantly better, taste a little cleaner and different but I do enjoy both of them. I had been seeing them both in cans for a few months, but just got the 20 oz. in the last month or so. I am not a big cola fan but the Pepsi is far better than Coke and comparable to Mexi-Coke. :tu
Haven't seen these around here yet, but I really liked Throwback Pepsi. I am looking forward to these.:tu

I had the Throwback Mt. Dew a couple months ago and was not a fan. Like the current stuff better. Now I have to hit the grocery tores looking for the Dr. Pepper and give it the Capt Morgan test.:r

I saw the Throwback Dew a few days ago and picked up a couple 2-liters ($1 apiece.)
I really like it. It brought into pretty stark contrast how strong the corn syrup taste is in the regular stuff. I hope they keep it around.

I haven't seen it around!! Hope I do soon though.
I must say, I hope it's not a huge change. I can taste the difference between regular Mt Dew and diet and caffine free (why they did this one is beyond me!!!!!!)

I tried the throwback dew this past summer and enjoyed it. It did remind me of the dew of the past compared to whats out there now. (not a big fan of dew in general). I might have Boylan's or something made with can sugar with a cigar.

I didn't like Pepsi Throwback the first time I tried it but after that it became addicting. I really want to try this Heritage Dr. Pepper though.
Thanks all.
Ok. so I wasn't the only one who thought that the Throwback Mtn, Dew was milder or less "in your face" than the current HFCS blend. Good to know.
I'm more interested in the Dr. Pepper anyway...
Mario, try Target. That's where I found these as single bottles in the refrigerated case. I have no idea if they sell cases or larger bottles, as I just noticed these by accident when grabbing a bottle of water. If I make it down to the herf this weekend at WC, I'll bring you a few bottles in the event that you can't find any.

Mr. Pibb was better than Dr. Pepper, but they changed that recipe too.
I remember Sun Drop (for those who know this one) as more tart, but that's changed.
And then, Mountain Dew was more tart as well - is that tartness back in the throwback/heritage version?

Of course, the Sugar makes a difference as well. In addition it would be really nice if ALL the drink man.s went
back to Sugar...it would help the economy.
On another throwback note, I just bought 12 decks of the old "Trips and Squeezer" card decks that I had
found very hard to get of late...something about PETA or Michael Vick or something.
You know the ones with the two chained up dogs at each other's throats???
Somebody in my office had never seen them or heard about them, but in LA, them wuz cards.
So I picked up a dozen plus a few Svengali decks for card tricks.

I drank both on my US trip, didnt like the pepsi, liked the Mountain Dew. But I didn't like the American version of Coca Cola either, European Coca Cola tastes different, much better. Asian coke sucks too.

I've used old doc's a few years back. Ordered a case of cans from them and was happy with the transaction, hoping to order again from them. Again this was a few years back though.

:tpd: Real sugar is a start, but I have no time for a cola without kola nut flavor. Once you check out a real cola, you'll recognize the big brands for what they are.
Padron is to Macanudo as real cola is to Coke and Pepsi.

Please advise as to where one can obtain cola with real kola nut flavor. I've always wanted to try some. Also, Macanudo may not be your preference but it is a real, hand made cigar. Wouldn't it be more like Padron to Swisher Sweet, etc.?
Tried Target today with no luck. I'll check out Nob Hill manana. That's where I finally found Pepsi Throwback before.

Well, like the post I quoted, I recommend Blue Sky. You can find it in many "health" food sections and at co-ops. If you live near a Whole Foods, you can find my personal fave, 365 Cola. It's their house brand. It's delicious, all natural, real sugar and lots of kola nut and it's freakin' cheap, too.
Also, Macanudo may not be your preference but it is a real, hand made cigar. Wouldn't it be more like Padron to Swisher Sweet, etc.?
At the end of the day, a good cola's still a can of sweet fizzy-water, too. Your analogy is fine, but I stand by mine. Padron and Macanudo have similar texture, size and burn characteristics. From most aesthetic angles, they're pretty much the same- but one has 10 times the flavor of the other. :D

I'm not a Dr. Pepper fan (stone me ;)) but the Throwback Mt. Dew does take me back to my teen years in the 70's. We didn't have a lot of soda (watered down Kool-aid and milk--whole milk, there was no other kind!--were the beverages of choice in my house, besides my dad's Old Milwaukee cans.) So when I could ride my bike out to the 7-11 a few neighborhoods over, I'd grab a Mt. Dew and a comic book (which I wasn't supposed to have, either.) I was livin' on the edge. :banger
So, yea, I really enjoy the Throwback Mt. Dew. It tastes like that, to me.

Just swung by Target and discovered that all Pepsi, Mt. Dew & Dr. Pepper 12-packs (cans) are on sale for $3 each + CRV through tomorrow. This includes throwback Dew, Heritage Dr. Pepper and Throwback Pepsi. Apparently there is also a $1 off a 12-pack of Pepsi products coupon on Target's website, which you can print multiple times. I don't know if the coupon works for Dr. Pepper, but it should work for Mtn. Dew as "Pepsi Co" is clearly indicated as the manufacturer on the Throwback Mtn. Dew.
I have no idea if this $3 for 12-pack sale is national or by region, in this case Northern CA.

I miss the Mountain Dew (and sodas in general) that come in glass bottles. Soft drinks that are in plastic bottles taste quite different from drinks that are in glass bottles. The throwback Mt. Dews that are sold in my area come in glass bottles, so I'm not sure that the formula is different, but that the lastic flavor is not infused in the Throwback drinks b/c they are served in glass bottles. The glass container may be the difference in the cleaner taste. I miss the glass bottle days (they haven't been seen around here on a regular basis since the early '90s).

Found the throw back Pepsi, just finished a 12 pack. Here's my review. I thought that it was good flavor, flatter than regular Pepsi (but then again I like flat). Now saying that, I am a jock Daniels fan and Jack and Cokes (Pepsis as the case may be) are a regular in my glass after work. I do not like the way that the throwback mixes with it. It changes the taste and it's not for the better at all.
So by Throwback for regular drinking, and regular Pepsi for mixing.

I used to drink Crown Royal and Dr. Pepper on a regular basis, so after trying and enjoying a Dr. Pepper Heritage, I had to try one of the Heritages with some Crown. I found the same basic concept as above - the Heritage is great for drinking on its own, but did not mix well. I'm not sure how to describe the difference, but it does change the flavor considerably... and not for the better.

Can't find it here in New Jersey . Sprite and Coke in glass bottles is my soda weekness . I don't drink alot of soda but when I see those in glass I just can't resist . I used to like the Pepper when I was a kid so I guess it's the sweetener they use now that I don't like .
I have to second the bourbon and Dr. Pepper phenom, it is the single best mixer for whiskey
I have ever found.
As to the TB Mtn Dew, they can have it. Picked up 24 cans of it one Saturday, and by the
time I was done, I knew I'd never need another can. Like the man said, where's the tang? OJ babay.

For me when the Pepsi and Mountain Dew throwback's came out last year (two years ago? can't remember) I tried it side by side with regular HFCS pepsi and MD. I really couldn't tell enough of a difference that I'd drink one or the other based on taste, but hey, anything without HFCS is great in my book.
