View Full Version : Who has a Keurig coffee pot?

I just bought one for Sledn for Christmas. So far he LOVES it!

I was looking around at different web sites that sell the K Cups. Is there a specific site any of you like?

Also do any of you have the K cup reusable filters or the my caps? Prefer one over the other?

You can check out: www.greenmountaincoffee.com

I have used the K Cup Reusable filter with coffee that I've bought from Costco and it works great.

I just got my Keurig earlier this month, so I'm still sampling a lot of varieties. One of the varieties that I like is the Green Mountain Nantucket Blend - this is considered a Medium Roast variety.

We just got one too from the SIL.
It's a pretty neat product. Shop around for the pods, the prices vary widely and the big box stores are not always cheapest.

I got one for Christmas from my parents. I like it a lot. It's very convenient, easy to clean up after, I start it up when I get up and have my coffee ready for the morning when I head into work. Great product so far. The K-cups are only a little annoying, paying a little more for the convenience of it all is fine with me. I've bought my K-cups from BB&B so far, but I'll keep looking for other places as well.

My wife bought me one for Christmas, I love it. If you go the the Keurig website and register it online, you get a pretty good deal on the k-cups. Buy 4 boxes, get 2 of the 4 free, 10% off the other two, and free shipping. I registered and ordered Monday, got 4 boxes (96 k-cups) today. $25.11 total. :banger

So far my favorites are the caribou blend, newmans organic extra bold, and theres a green mountain coffee that I like that I can't think of.

I LOVE mine!! The Bunn and the Cuisinart grinder are in a closet.

BBB is the best place I have found, especially with the 20% coupon and the $5 off $15. If you get 3 boxes you can use both the same visit too.

Lots online too.

Walmart carries 3-4 kinds too, which isn't much but it makes me think that it won't be long and they will have a large selection also.

Costco also carries a large box of Tully French Roast which is awesome, may be different by location but it is the cheapest you can get them if you factor it per K cup.

I'll join the rest of the crew. I got mine this Christmas as well, from my parents. I love it. They are great or a pre-work travel mug so you don't have to make a whole pot. I've liked quite a few of the different blends so far, and the GM hot chocolate is pretty darn tasty.

Thanks for the heads up on registering the maker for the coffee discount, just did that.

The keurig/greenmountain coffee club seems to be the best deal going that I have found. Buy enough and they send you free stuff too.

I switched to the filters though, didn't like throwing all the little cups out. Filters tend to get gummed up if you grind the coffee too fine.

Question/thread jack. The link above has a spot about descaling the pot every 6 months. Is this needed if you are already using filtered water? Is cheap and I will probably do it anyway, just curious.

I like Urnex Cleancaf for cleaning both the espresso machine and the drip. It is very low impact so I will use it often. If your water is very hard then a stronger descaler may be needed like Urnex Dezcal Activated Descaler.
http://www.sweetmarias.com/prod.coffeecleaner.php

A britta filter will alter hardness slightly for the 1st 3 weeks but not after that. This is much more important in an espresso machine then a drip machine but excessive build up is going to keep your elements from heating proper and impart taste. Purr filter have no effect on hardness. Zero water (http://www.amazon.com/ZeroWater-ZD-013-Filtration-Electronic-Included/dp/B001CUMLOK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1262623179&sr=8-1) claims to reduce harness 0.

Here is a little something on water. http://www.big-rick.com/coffee/waterfaq.html

It was a great choice - though I will admit to drinking more coffee now.

I like the varieties that are available for throuhout the day.

Caribou Daybreak

Green Mountain Extra Bold Sumatran

Even like the Green Mountain Hot Cocoa.

Had to experiment with the right size dispense to get the desired flavor.

That's the same machine we have as well...and I also have the same micorwave...just on the other side of the Keurig. :D

I absolutely LOVE this machine. I've had for about 2 years or so and couldn't be happier. It's great for us because I leave the house at about 7 every morning and my fiance doesn't work the same hours everyday, so making an entire pot of coffee is out of the question.

Figured I would share a couple of sites I've found some really good deals on and...don't forget to look for those online coupons either:

I buy the teas, so I am not to sure if there is a difference in price. But a lot of the teas I buy are 24 cups for $9.99. http://www.coffee.org/

Mine(platinum) was running a little off lately it would turn off after brewing 1 cup. It seems this is a known issue. I called Keurig and they are sending out a new unit no questions asked. If you are having problems call them. They offer great customer service they didn't even want the old one back. Oh and for my troubles they are sending 2 boxes of the coffee of my choice.

I went to BB&B to buy one for my folks and noticed they were all pulled from the shelves. The manager said it was due to an issue with the pump.

I'm glad to see the customer service was there...that's hard to find now a days.

Did the machine totally shut off, or just stop brewing? The reason I'm asking is because a while ago our machine started brewing a cup and stoped about half way. When we put the next cup in, it brewed that cup and what ever was left of the first cup that didn't finish...weird.

Yes! Ours is more of a motor like problem. Yesterday, I did clean it out with vineagar/water. Ran fine when I did that part. Later went to make a cup of tea and the problem resurfaced. Took longer to brew. Then it brewed half of what it was supposed to. Hit the button after it was ready again. Brewed fine that time. It's getting quite annoying to say the least. Darn machine is not even 4 months old.

Glad to know we are not the only ones experiencing a problem with it.

Well, I guess the one good thing is it seems this problem has happened enought that Keurig is prepared to replace the machines and stand by their product. However, I can totally see why you would be mad with your machine only being 4 months old.

Definitley a great perk. It's perfect for us becuase we're never on the same schedule so it's rare that I'm going to brew a pot or even prepare a press for just me so we can brew two different cups of coffee at two different times...it's great. :tu

Green Mountain Coffee is my favorite, the Dark Magic specifically.

I go directly to the Kurig Website, as you can build up points for free coffee of even the top shelf brewer.

The cheapest way to buy bulk, once you find your coffee, is the 80ct boxes. My wife and I buy the Paul Newman special blend for about 40 bucks. If you like darker full bodied coffee, look for the "Extra Bold" label.:2

Well my Platinum started acting up over the last couple days. :(

Brewing half-cups and then shutting off when it starts to pump (maybe 3/5 times). I called Keurig and they are sending me a whole new unit and a couple boxes for my trouble. The bummer is due to low stock of the Platinum it is going to take 2 weeks to get it.

I'll keep limping along and if it gets bad enough I'll have to bring home my Mini from work. :)

Overall still very impressed with this company, their products and customer service.

The Ice Tea cups are great if you brew them right. I don't use the Ice Bev Button. Instead I fill a 20oz cup with with ice and brew on the second largest size. I also add 1 Splenda and fresh lemon juice. Makes for a great cup of Ice Tea.

It's a real blessing to have a cup first thing in the morning, right away. I still grind and use a french press occasionally, but it's mostly a weekend thing. The drip machine has gone away though. Ask to be elevated to the next level of support. Tell them that you have tried descaling and all the other trouble shooting procedures. After that tell them that you are almost out of K-cups and if they won't send you a replacement you are going to just go with a different manufacturer.

Amazon has 50-count packs from Coffee People for $22. These come with minimal packaging. They are loose inside the cardboard box. The blends offered in this format are Kona, Donut Shop, Jet Fuel, Organic, Black Tiger and Wake Up Call. I have personally tried the Kona, Donut Shop and Jet Fuel. The Kona and Donut Shop make a decent cup of coffee. Which is what you normally get from these machines. Can't ask for much more than just a decent cup of coffee from them. The Jet Fuel is the least palatable of the three I have tried.

I have been considering buying one of the Keurig units. I like the option of brewing up to a 12 oz cup for my travel mug. Since many of the units have various cup-size options, what changes, if any, occur in brewing the coffee?
Is the same amount of coffee used regardless of the desired cup size? Will the 12 oz cup be weak compared to a 6 oz cup?

Same pod regardless of size brewed.I'll sometimes use two pods to brew a big cup because I like stronger coffee.
I wouldn't say the larger cups taste noticeably weaker though.
Some of the holiday blends have been pretty tasty.

What Dave said, regardless of cup size selected the machine uses one K-Cup.

I prefer strong coffee (read not-watery) and I brew on the 8 ounce size mostly.

With the K-Cups I use I can also brew on the 12 ounce size and it is NOT watery at all, still very good. (Jet-Fuel, Black Tiger, Sumatra, etc)

But with some K-cups, like Breakfast Blend or ones like that, the 12 ounce is too weak for me. If I am brewing for my large travel mug (20 oz) I will brew twice, both times on 8 ounce.

It's really about selecting the right brew for the cup size.

Wow! I have a Melita One Cup. You place a #2 brown filter in it and then place it atop a 10oz coffee mug. Then I place 3 well rounded tablespoons of Trader Joe's House Blend (Sumatra & Columbian) in my coffee grinder, and grind it on the fine cycle (about 17 seconds). I place this fine grind in the coffee filter and pour boiling water that has rested for approximately 30 seconds over the top, and drink it black.

This produces a heftly cup of joe at a very inexpensive cost...:tu

This (http://www.keurig.com/accessories/my-k-cup) reusable filter is the one we got.

That's the one I have been using as well. It works really well.

Pros:

Use your own coffee
If your regular K-cup holder breaks can be used to still make coffee

Cons:

It can overflow. (I have a fix for this that worked perfectly)
It makes one cup, then you have to clean it. Not really a con but becomes a hassle.

I just use regular drip grind. Not espresso but not coarse either. The trick is not filling the basket all the way to the top and making sure the black o-ring that is on the unit itself fits snugly against the top.

If your pump is failing there is not amount of descaling that will help. The only time that helps is when the nozzle is clogged (at least in my experience). Just jump through the hoops so they will send you a replacement. :2

No worries. I just wondered how they would replace it more than once. I have called 5 times to get a new k-cup holder and they keep giving me the run around. I finally got told that I need to destroy the unit I have (even though it was a gift) because the unit had already been traded in. Exactly, most of them are missing the K-Cup holder part so chances are they were replaced. I kept the reservoir from both of ours but just chucked the rest. That little part they make you send back sell on ebay for like $30 bucks. I guess there would be a big market for getting a replacement and buying the K-cup holder so you could re-sell the "replaced" unit.

Add me to the list of new owners.

Apparently it was a combined effort from the wife and cousin - Got the brewer (B60) 3 "My KCups" and at best guess, 300+ "cups" - (I think they robbed the department store) Seriously, now my kitchen makes the waiting room lounge at the Infiniti dealership look cheap. :r

Had not seen that... here's (http://www.perfectpodmaker.com/pages/products.php) their website... looks pretty promising.

Do any of you have the 'Perfect Pod Holster'? It seems you can open up another 200+ coffee's and less mess than the 'My K-Cup'.

Has anyone ever tried a product called the ""MyKap"? I've seen it advertised on my gmail account. Apparently, it's a small, round hard plastic cover that you snap on top of a used K-cup, after cleaning and refilling. their website is here: MyKap (http://www.my-kap.com/MYK/)

I was just wondering.... :)

I haven't personally used it, but I have watched a few video reviews. It seems like it's more of a pain than the my K-cup. As you have to remove the foil then clean out the small cup first. There also seems to be a good amount of carry over on flavor as the paper filter that was used previously is saturated with the previous flavor/blend.

Just looked at it oop - only thing is, how many times can the bottom of the cup be punctured?

Hey wayner!

Did you notice they sell "baby" filters as well??

You can align the bottom hole up with the needle so that you use the same hole.

Taking a look at those versus the Make Your own K-cup, I think I'd rather have the Make your own K-Cup... we actually returned the K-Cup unit Keurig sells and I'm ordering the make your own... no switching out the unit, etc and it uses tiny filters which makes the cleanup easier... just my 1.5 cents!!!

I am not sure which one you are talking about. There are a few aftermarket parts:

My K-Cup
My Kap
Perfect Pod Holster
Perfect Pod maker

Which are you talking about?

I just got two Solofill (http://www.solofill.com/) cups for my Keurig. After a little experimentation with fill level and grind, I am getting pretty damn good coffee out of my Keurig. Which is saying a lot. Works about a hundred times better than the My K-cup. It is definitely on par with a really good regular drip machine and definitely surpasses regular K-cups. Not quite as good as a french press, but it is definitely quicker and cleaner.

How does it work better than the My k-cup? It's essentially the same thing, right? IMO, the down side to the My k-cup is washing that screen out. Is the plastic filter easier to clean? I would think that it would be, but then it's a trade off as it would onto stains/flavors more.

The regular K-cups imo are awesome. I have had a few bad coffee's but that's not the fault of the K-Cup, it's more a fault of the blend/roast.

It gets better extraction than the my k-cup. It seems with the my k-cup the water just drills a hole down through the grounds and the majority of the extraction process just comes out as hot water. Not so with the solofill.
IMO, the down side to the My k-cup is washing that screen out.
In my opinion, the downside to the my k-cup is a weak ass cup of coffee. Basically that is the downside to the keurig in general. In order to get a decent cup, you have to use 2 k-cups on the lowest water setting. Seems like a waste to me.

It is not easier to clean, but I dont think that it is in any way hard to clean.

I have tried probably 100 different blends of k-cups and have only ever had a decent cup of coffee. Nothing I would ever brag about or come close to saying it was awesome. With the solofill, it is still not an awesome cup of coffee, but it is a lot closer than I thought this machine could come.

Thanks for your thought out replies. I am by no means an expert on coffee, but it makes it strong enough for me and tastes wonderful, imo.

I've had one of those Solofil's in the cart on Amazon, but never pulled the trigger. Looks like I should finally get it after reading your review Sawyer. Probably should get 2.

Can you expand a bit on your grinding/filling method? From the research I did on the K-Cup, that was the thing most people had trouble with.

I fill it to the line inside, not all the way to the top, with a grind slightly finer than regular drip. If you get slow extraction, then it is either too fine or packed too tight. Takes a bit of practice.

This guy says he gets a good cup with preground. I dont fill it as full as he does because I find that I get a really slow extraction with the grind I use if I fill it all the way to the top.

Ive got the K-cup and I found that it used to leaked alot of water. I will have to check out the solo cup.

There are a couple simple fixes for that. One is to buy an O-ring that fits into the indention on the top of the My K-cup. The other one, is to simply take the Oring that is on the needle that punctures the top and slide it down some. make sure not to slide it off. Then put in the My K-Cup, close the top of the unit and it will push it back up into the proper place.

I tried it this weekend and it works fine now. Now if I use a regular K-cup with the O-ring being pulled down a bit, will it puncture the foil at all or should I push it up when I use one of those?

Thanks for your help :tu

By using it with the 'My K-cup' it basically just aligned the o-ring to the proper height. It will now work fine for regular k-cups and may actually improve the extraction of them. You won't need to re-adjust anything.

Finally ordered two of the Solofill reuseable k-cups. Decided to give them a try this past weekend and brew up some coffee for iced coffee. Bought a bag of Starbuck's Italian Roast and followed the instructions for filling the cup. Couldn't have been easier to use. And WOW! What great tasting coffee. Seems to have way more body than what you get out of a regular k-cup. Cleanup is a breeze too.

I too use the Kuerig with the reusable screen.
I find the more course the coffee is ground the better it works.
The really fine coffee seems to get pushed out of the way by the water flow allowing the water to almost pass by the grinds.
I do love my Keurig!

I'm not a huge coffee drinker and haven't bought any k-cups in a while, but have coffee prices risen that much lately? Seems the average per price k-cup is $.60 and going up. Looking at the links that Wayne posted, the one on Amazon is nearly $1.00/cup. the Walmart deal isn't much better at $.66/cup.

However, with commodities going up everyday in price, it is going to be harder and harder to find at a "decent" price.

I loved my Keurig at first, but I live in an area with hard water, so the maintenance required to keep it from getting clogged is annoying. It got to the point where hitting the large mug button resulted in about 1/3 cup of coffee coming out. It got better after some scouring, but it's already starting to get bad again. I've owned it less than a year.

I went to Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robbins yesterday to treat my son to some ice cream. And low and behold they are selling their own K Cups. Not like I can drink the stuff being preggers. However, I bought a box of their Dunkin Dark Roast. Pretty pricey though. 14 K Cups for $11.00. Hubby better enjoy those! :)

They have 5 different ones. French Vanilla, Hazelnut, Original, Dark Roast, and a plain Decaf.
