Is Opus X really "all that"?

I was at the local B&M Saturday, and as I was poking around, the proprietor told another customer that he has Opus X back in stock. Having heard of them around here, I take a look only to see the price tag. So, are they really all that, or what?

I'll jump in here, why not....okay, so I haven't gone headlong down the Opus slope (mostly due to inflated prices, hype and limited supply) but I have had a few and I do like 'em. I was able to find a place in Pittsburgh that had them at a very reasonable cost and a few others on my travels in the past year. The place in Pitt had 'em for like $10 - $14 a stick.

I find that they're quite consistent, quite tasty and if you can find 'em at the above price range (good luck), then it's worth it.

If you find 'em for $35 - $45 like they are at my B&M (which I personally like despite the Opus costs), then FORGET IT!

Just keep lookin' and you'll find them!

I get down to Florida 3-5 times per year. Always slip over to Tampa to some local shops there. I always pick up a couple Opus X cigars there, usually around $12 each. They are good cigars, well worth the $12. They are not worth the $25+ that you see them alot of places.

Just had my first Opus Saturday, and I think that if you can get over the price, or find one at a more reasonable price, they are worth it. I also agree, that $30 - $40 a stick is a little steep, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy more if i found them in the $10 - $20 range. Just my :2

Its a great special occasion smoke at $12 to $15 anything more then that and I would find something else to smoke! Check with other B+M in your area and you will find one who doesn't mark up the "special" smokes... Good luck

Give them a few years, and the answer is yes. Fresh, they can be rather harsh in my esperience. Definitely not an everyday stick, but if you can hold on to them and get a few years of age, they make a fantastic 'special smoke':ss

but would like to add that off the few I have had they do age and the 5 yo one I had was quite fantastic and worth the price IMHO.

If you can get them at close to MSRP, then that is a good plan, but I would recommend trying two - one larger ring gauge and one smaller, because the vitola does affect the taste on this cigar.

Personally, I find the longer Opus Xs to be as boring as watching paint dry and I've seen BOTLs who are trying their first Opus and it's a Double Corona, or Reserva D'Chateau or Perfexion No. 2 and they sit there smoking the cigar "waiting for something to happen" and since it never does, they end up turned off to the line. If I had to recommend two Opus X's for someone to try, I would say the xXx Power Ranger (short torpedo) and the Perfecxion No.4 (corona, cedar wrapped) or a Perfecxion No.5 (petite corona). Different enough in size that they have noteable differences in complexity and power, not so long that one ends up bored.:2

That's a good point! I tend toward robustos, or sometimes coronas; but I don't really go for longer smokes. So, the torpedo and the petit corona might be right up my alley. But, if I end up liking them; then what? :eek:

I believe they're being released right about now. My local B&M is supposed to have some this week.

And I'd consider them worth up to about $20. They are smooth, creamy and rich.

I love Opus Xs and would gladly pay msrp for them. Sadly, I never see them marked at msrp. Usually they are in the $25-$35 range depending on size. My neighborhood shop has a several boxes right now but I think the cheapest they had were about the size of a petit corona and cost $25.

Even "fresh" Opus have been aged for 3 years from Fuente. I find this age statement just a tad in accurate...

I love Opus and when I first started smoking them, I didn't know any better about buying them. We have 1 local B&M on Island and it's the # 1 travel destination in the US again. $$$$$

I was in Singapore in May. Found a shop at the Hyatt and he had a full box of Opus #4's and wanted $2000.00 US for the box. Did I buy, no.

Do some home work and figure out where to buy Opus if you like Opus, I did.:ss

I wondered about this too since the conventional wisdom seems to be that Opus' are best when laid down for a few years. A little extra age couldn't hurt, but I would think they should very smokeable right off the truck. :confused:

I do mlike them "off the truck", but a little age seems to make a difference. My :2 .

I have only smoked a few,but I didn't think they were anything to write home about. I wouldn't pay $35 a stick .

Well said Adam. I have to agree with you on the vitolas and taste.
As far as if they are worth trying? Sure, anything is worth a try if you can afford it. Just do not pay 25+ for them.

Have not tried one yet, and will not until I see one at a reasonable price. I've only been smoking cigars for a year, and there's way too many affordable smokes out there to try.

OpusX is a fine, special occasion, smoke.
They can be found at/near msrp online.

They are limited release, and some vendors
mark them up to reflect the scarcity.

I know several local b&ms that sell them in
the $9-$18 range, before sales tax, but they
limit the number that can be purchased each
day.

If I lived closer to said b&ms, I'd have more.
But, as it is, I've accumulated well over a
dozen, since starting smoking cigars 4 yrs ago.

I probably smoked an equal number to those
that I have aging. I gave my brother a xXx
last New Years Eve, and it kicked his butt. :r
I like the smaller sizes, too. They're also the
most affordable. They make xlnt gifts for those
that will appreciate them.

Definitely try them, but don't overpay for them.

I'm with you on the Maximus, One of the best smokes I've had this year. As far as Opus goes I haven't smoked one that I've liked yet. I enjoyed a $3.00 5 vegas Miami last night more than the $16.00 fuente fuente Opus X from 2 nights ago.

Fresh, I hate them, but with some age on them they are great. Smoked one not too long ago that I had in the humi for three years and it was one of the best cigars I ever smoked. Whenever I buy Opus I never buy with the intention of smoking right of way.

Smoke what you like and like what you smoke. I've got my fair share and I will tell you that after a nap it makes a big difference.

To me the answer is Yes but I think everyone should try any and all cigars once. That goes for $50 cigar or a 50 cent cigar.... just my :2
