View Full Version : Fred Armisen Must Die!

As I sit here watching SNL, it occurs to me that this "comedian" may be the least funny cast member ever to appear on the show. He must have some serious dirt on Lorne Michaels. I can't think of any other explanation as to how he keeps his job. [/rant]

Do you remember how disturbingly unfunny Piscopo was? Like a 1980's Fred Mertz?

Piscopo was kinda hit or miss, and there was some other stuff like that, notably the "films" by Albert Brooks; but compared to Armisen it's comedy gold.

It just struck me as ironic last night, Armisen did a bit a Weekend Update as an unfunny Native American comedian. That's like Paris Hilton in a groundbreaking role as an untalented, rich skank.

C'mon, those cheerleader sketches she used to do with Will Ferrell were hilarious, especially when Jim Carrey hosted.

Is Saturday Night Live still on? I thought it got canceled when it ceased to be funny. What was that, 10 or 15 years ago? ;) I suppose Will Ferrell would have been an exception. Joe Piscopo always reminded me of something... I don't know what, exactly, but I wasn't fond of him then, either. Remember Johnny Dangerously?

They had some funny stuff during the 2000 election with Will Ferrell and Darrell Hammond. That era had some decent stuff. Other than that, SNL hasn't been truly funny since Eddie Murphy left.

At some point, I sat back and looked at the SNL sketches I'd been watching, and I realized that I just didn't find Cheri Oteri funny. Someone else in the skit might be good enough to carry her, but that's about it.

It's funny how everyone derides whatever the current SNL is. The show has always been the same, one or two really funny bits crammed into 90 minutes. It was that way in the beginning and it's still that way now.

And I actually like Fred, I think the comedian bit he does on the news is hilarious.

replicant_argent

What I think is odd about SNL in its current configuration is that they don't seem to understand when a gag isn't working, or that it has turned into a 6 minute bit when it should have been 2, and even then it was running out of gas. It 's as if Lorne Michaels forgot how to find talent and all we get in return is the occasional chuckle in a sea of hackneyed skits that were worked to death in rehearsals, without someone saying "This isn't working, let's rewrite, or cut the hell out of it." I wonder if the writer/performer culture for the show is locked into a mutual appreciation society vicious circle. I understand that sometimes comedy fails, and in theater of any type, performances can vary, but you wonder if it will still be here in 5 years. A couple of buddies were chuckling about a skit from last week, quoting it last night. I just watched it.
"Ladies Bowling." I need to re-evaluate the possibility that my friends may have been huffing model glue.

I actually like most of the current cast. I was a bit skeptical about Kenan Thompson when he started a few years ago, mainly because I remembered my older kids watching him on Nikolodeon. But, he's actually one of my favorites now. That Weekend Update bit he did as James Harrison after the Super Bowl last year was hilarious.

I've got to agree with Tom on this one. Quite a few good cast members have gone on to bigger and better things.

I think where the problem comes in, SNL has always been out there on the edge and do not pander to the masses. Not all the skits are going to appeal to everyone all the time, but when they are on and in line with your understanding of what they are satirizing, they are still the best out there with any kind of exposure. :2

The Target Lady is awesome, especially when Justin Timberlake played her friend. The Penelope sketches are great too. I like how they show one of her ridiculous claims to be true at the end of the sketch, like Liza Minelli being her best friend.
I think some of her funniest bits have been on WU, like the "just kidding travel "expert," or the woman suffering from constant orgasms (Seth Myers: "Thanks for coming."). :r

Horatio Sanz got a chuckle or two from me, but no to the rest. I guess I'm more of an old school comedy guy. Like you said though, it's all a matter of personal opinion. Maybe it's a sign of me getting older, but today's comedy and music just doesn't do it for me. It's harder and harder for me to find current comedians and music that I can get in to.

Target Lady, but I agree. Kenan's Grady Wilson with the marital aid tapes is pretty funny, and I'm drawing a blank on the name of the character, but the sketch where he slides back and forth on a conveyor giving tips on dating scenarios is pretty good too.
I'm definitely not a fan of Timberlake's music, but he's done some hilarious stuff on SNL. The two shorts were hilarious, and the Target Lady sketch he did with kristen Wiig was probably one of the funniest ones yet.

Worts Armisen trait is his lack of skills in taking it to the end. he takes his unfunny comic characters fifty miles past too far, but he can't keep his Obama speech mannerisms going for more than three lines. WTF? He did Obama through to the end ONCE, the very first time he did it. Most times now he throws one speech mannerism in there and then does "himself" for 2.5 minutes. The thing he does in the Field Jacket with the topical newspaper humor on Update is DREADFUL. milk, milk, milk,

I also think Andy Samberg is unfunny, although in his idiom, he is a master, and that is the little film-songs. Outside that he is a disaster, too, but then again, that's all they ask of him, anyway. laser cats is good. But Keenan Thompson is so good he saves the lot of em. That new "What's up with That" is a classic. I love how Lindsey Buckingham has been on every show and not said one thing yet.
Still, Barry Gibb Talk show was the best thing they have done in that genre of sketch in twenty years.
I hope and pray for my man Justin Timberlake to host, just for that. But last time, they tried to work too much $hit into it and it was awful.

The very first one (with Paterson wandering around the WU set) was semi-funny. After that, it's been classic Armisen: repeat ad nauseam (in this case, jabs at New Jersey).
The worst part is, Paterson is a comedy goldmine. Armisen should take some lessons from his predecessors on how to lampoon a politician: Tina Fey, Darrell Hammond, Dana Carvey, and going way back, Chevy Chase as Ford.

Remember that I am down south, so it is funnier to me that he rides the N.J. pony too far. To me it only got tiresome the third time they ran the bit. But he looks just like the pol.
And wandering around the studio was great, especially the first time. But this changes nothing...Fred Armisen must die.

Well Armisen torqued me off Sat nite with that show-ending sketch where he was the "teen-psychiatrist"
show producer. The premise was good, some of the banter was good, but in classic style, Fred rode the
pony to a lather and killed it.

I have to somewhat disagree with the death of SNL, if only for the presence of two superstars,
the McGruber dude Will Forte and Bill Hader, the guy that does Vincent Price so well. In fact, it
was this week's show that made me remember how versatile Bill Hader is. His impression of
James Carrville is hilarious and does not wear thin from start to finish. I used to think he was
no Darrell Hammond, but when you think about it, Hammond's characters can really 'run together' in
terms of their efficacy. Bill Hader's impressions are all unique and fully fleshed out. He does
a perfect Dateline reporter Keith Morrison. As I mentioned, he does a great Vincent Price, too.
Most people could care less and don't know Vincent Price. What I like about Bill Hader is he does
impressions AND writes funny material to go with the impression. It makes the impression work
alot longer. He is useful in recurring characters as well. Sorry to run on and on, and while two cast
members can't really save the whole show, these guys work really hard and do a great job.

The whole problem for me is that TPTB insist on featuring Armisen in nearly every sketch. There's definitely some good stuff: WU, digital shorts (Laser Cats w/ Sigourney Weaver went beyond cheesy to hilarious, Shy Ronnie, and the infamous Dick in a Box), most stuff with Kenan Thompson, ESPN Classic. It's just not worth sitting through 20 minutes of unfunny crap to see one sketch that's remotely amusing. Some of the hosts and music guests are baffling too. J-Lo was about as funny as an infected hemmorhoid, Ryan Phillipe ("Who?"). "Ting Tings? Learn to sing sing." "Kei$ha? Britney/Christina/Gaga/Shakira called. She wants her act back." I'll probably watch the ep with Betty White. Other than that, I don't know if it's worth the effort.

I get stuck watching SNL occasionally nowadays because Lisa likes it. I have yet to see anything exceptionally funny, but every now and again I get a snicker. I'm definately not turning it on of my own volition.
I agree that Keenan is the bright spot of the show, but I spent years of cringing while the kids watched him on Nick. Now I have a two second patience span for him. If he'd just stop hollering, I could probably handle him. That's the same thing that made me turn off the tv a hundred times over the years. I can remember telling the kids, "Turn that down or I'm setting the tv on fire." It was always Keenan when I checked. The hollering just annoys me to no end. It's like fingernails on the chalkboard, and I can tolerate a lot more of that than Keenan.

Betty White is coming on??? Now THAT I would watch. I guess i watch cause I am one of those
drones who has HDTV but not cable. I just do not use TV as much of a noisebox in my life, so
having cable or sat. is wasted. Sure, there is a ton of stuff to watch, but when? I am in bed by
9pm nightly. SNL is my way of making Saturday last longer. I stay up late Friday and Saturday.
Mostly I am Fing around with my laptop and it is on in case they do something good.
As bad as it is, it is better than Mad TV, and I think Austin City Limits is also on opposite. I can
only take some much Indie rock from another singer-songwriter who is up and coming. So it's SNL.
So if you extrapolate, I never saw Keenan, cause I never had Nickelodeon. :D
But I can see your point. Kid TV is the worst TV.

Mad TV has been done for a while now. Wanda Sykes has the 11:00 slot on Fox. In one segment, she has a roundtable with 3 guests where they discuss a current news event. It's usually pretty funny.

Hahahahaha, it was like TWO LEGS hanging off her shoulders, right one where the left should be

Your arch-ememy Armisen really hit new lows with the Danish Sinatra show thing. God is he
tough to watch. But he seems to be the lead player in alot of situations, with the rest just
supporting him. Even in staging, he is way upstage. On the bright side, it looks like McGRUBER
is going to be pretty good. At least over the top if not predictable. Val Kilmer, Powers Booth.

Other than the cold open, very little Armisen. :tu
Betty White was hilarious, but had a few flat spots, notably the Scared Straight sketch with Kenan.
I could have done without Jay-Z's extended "greatest hits" medley. And who was the Sting Mini-Me that came out for his second performance?
It was nice to see all the former cast members who haven't done anything since leaving SNL (except Tina Fey).

Well, she did do a few things (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betty_White#Filmography) before that. :p
Seriously, I think a lot of her appeal is that she can play a role as saccharine as the dim-witted Rose from the Golden Girls, and then do something like the digital short from last night's SNL.

I think it's a combination of the fact that she's still taking on new projects, and the ubiquity of social networking tools. Ten years ago, you might talk about something like last night's SNL with a half dozen people around the proverbial water cooler. Now, any moron with a blog or Facebook account can post up "OMG!!1! I guess the squeaky-clean image comes from The Golden Girls. She's always made pretty suggestive (if not quite so explicit) comments on talk shows, and in Lake Placid she was pretty foul-mouthed (about the only thing worth watching in that POS).
