View Full Version : Liga Privada #9 Flying Pig

I have to give a lot of credit to Steve Saka, president of Drew Estate. Before he created and released the Liga Privada #9 I would take a walk around the block to avoid touching anything with the Drew Estate name to it, but after smoking a Liga Privada #9 I wanted more of those. And then there came the Flying Pig, a fat funny looking stick that made its way to the top 5 of my "want to try" list. I tried it, and loved it.

The flying pig is made from the same blend as the normal Liga Privada #9, so it has a Connecticut broadleaf wrapper, a Brazilian binder and Honduran & Dominican filler. The wrapper is nice and dark and is almost veinless, it looks like a small bomb. The cap has a pig tail, but that was expected with a name like this. The cigar has a full barnyard aroma. The construction feels good, but the predraw is a bit easy and leaves a delayed pepper flavor on the tongue

Right from the start I can taste cacao, mild bitter and earthy flavors. After a few puffs I can also taste some herbs and spices, like seedless red peppers. After a third the flavors mellow out, the pepper and the cacao disappeared, the herbal flavors and the earth are now the only flavors noticeable.

Halfway the aftertaste becomes a mild creamy chocolate flavor but unfortunately the chocolate doesn't stick around, the creaminess does. Close to the end the cacao returns.

The draw starts off a little bit on the easy side but gets better. I get a lot of smoke from this cigar, medium thick and it has a blue shine to it. The cigar has a strange shape, and just like perfectos I can't get it to burn straight in the beginning, but after a correction the cigar burns quite well. The ash is white, compact and firm as you can see on the pictures. The cigar is full flavored and medium/full bodied. There is hardly any build up of tar. It lasted me little over an hour.

Would I buy this cigar again? Yes, yes, yes, I want more. I bought 2 of those in a box split and promised the other cigar to SmokeyNL, but fortunately he got a box of his own so I have one left to smoke.

Ferd, I smoked a few of these at the B&M near me, really enjoyed it except, like nubs and other short cigars, it got HOT HOT HOT towards the end. (Side note: FUNNY hot hot hot video! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVENWl8uBeg))

This smoke is easily one of my favorites right now. After smoking a few of them I started taking a little extra time on that last little bit and it helps with the heat issue.
DE hit it out of the park with this one IMHO!

These smokes are pretty limited. It will be tough to find them. Good luck with your search man.
As far as the cigar goes, this was a unique smoke. I enjoyed mine to the nub. Thanks for the review Ferdie.
Enjoy it Darrell, let me know what you think of it!

I had one of these a few weeks back.
Did i like it? yes.
Did i love it? no.
Would i buy one again? Maybe?
Really strong stick though. Lots of Pepper and earth.
Things do mellow out a tad toward the end.
This is on my list of smokes to try :)
Thanks for the review.

Great review and pic's my brother!
I was at a Liga Privada Event at my local B&M last night, I have always liked the No. 9 and finally got to try the T-52, I really liked the additional spiceyness it has.
I had a chance to get a couple of the Flying Pigs but between the Robust Porter, the Scotch and Tequilla I forget about them.

I was a B&M yesterday and they had 3 boxes of these. Are these still limited to 2000 boxes or did they decide to make these a regular production just not as many? There seems to be quite a few floating around. They are one heck of a great cigar so hoping it will be around for a while.

I think what you are seeing is a staggered release as I don't think the release numbers have changed, and they can only produce about 700 of these cigars per day (only 4 rolling teams for these cigars, quota limited to 175 per team per day so they don't have to rush).

Excellent review!
I had a "regular" #9 at my B&M a few weeks ago (which I loved) and I'm pretty sure I saw a few of these funny looking ones. I'm going for a smoke today, I'll have to try one if their are any left...

I found a box at a sort of local B&M and thought what the hell...took it up to the register and was given the total of $158.00. I said "Is that with the box discount". And it was. So i put them back in the walk in.
When these can be had all over the net for $120.00 no way am I going to pay a 32% premium for the privilege of buying local.

According to Steve Saka on 06 Jan 2010, only about half of the 09 Flying Pigs have been shipped, so you should still have some opportunities to obtain them (I know that CI hasn't gotten their shipment in yet and they are listing them at less than B&M prices):
The Y2009 batch of Flying Pigs was only enough to make 2,000 boxes - only about half have been shipped as the balance is still aging. On average, only about 200 boxes are ready per month for shipping into the US each month so they are extremely rare. As for whether there will be more produced, it hasn’t been decided yet.

Where can these be found on the net?
I can only find the LP #9 not the flying pig!

I think most online retailers are sold out or back ordered, but Tex is showing them in stock right now: $64 for 6.

I think Corona is also waiting for their shipment:

That's just off the top of my head, might be a few others out there right now.

Texcigars are the only ones I find in stock. They won't sell you a box, only a bundle of 6.

hmm, I hadn't been interested in Liga Privada before, but I might have to hunt some down.
Texcigars are the only ones I find in stock. They won't sell you a box, only a bundle of 6.
So call them up. buy two bundles then and ask them to send the empty box too.
(I've never tried this, with them, but I can't see why they wouldn't do it)

Reviving a couple month old thread here, but I'm guessing NES is correct - I'm letting a couple of these sit. Going to crack into one right away, though - and really looking forward to it.
