View Full Version : I lost a snake...

I lost a snake I JUST got. Its a small corn snake about a foot or so long. I put it in a tupperware container to feed it. I had it in there with a screen top and heavy thermometer not thinking it would get out. Well it did and now cant fine it ANYWHERE in my room. I took everything out of a basket of stuff, took out everything under my bed and dresser. Not there. I emptied my closet floor and found nothing. My dad knows but I havent told my mom yet but its fine cause she used to raise and keep snakes and that kinda stuff with a previous husband. My door was closed and I dont think it got out under it and the cats and dog havent found anything yet.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I would catch this thing? Right now I just have a heating pad on, on the floor. My brother suggested getting an infrared light and shining it on the pad. Ive looked around the internet to see what other people have done and they say try the stick mouse traps, putting flour or baby powder on the floor to see where they have been goin to.

So then you will have a mongoose and snake loose in your house?

Yup real easy way to find him :)

Lay out a rock and point a heat lamp at it. Leave it in the last place you saw him, he/she should come out when it senses the heat. Just make sure you watch the heat lamp in your house so you dont start a fire..

I found my Bearded Dragon using this trick. Heating pads are ok but the snake will be attracted to the UV and Heat from the Bulb.

good Luck

Im goin to do this tomorrow. Conveniently my brother lost the milk snake he found at his house and said that I should just go buy another one and if/when I find this one to give it to him. My corn snake only cost $10 so its not like I lost a $150 snake

Oh and trick #2

If it eats live food you can put crickets in a container, the noise should get the snakes attention.

That is a good idea. When I get crickets from the pet store for the gecko they dont make noise

I'm not really a snake fan, but my wife is. A couple years ago we acquired a ball python which managed to escape. Instead of telling me that the snake got out, my wife went out and bought another one and put it in the enclosure so I wouldn't know. The next day I heard one of the dogs barking at something in the bathroom. I went in and much to my surprise found a ball python on the bathroom floor.

Got a terrier?

Of course, then one of the crickets will get out, hide and drive you nuts, when it DOES start chirping.... :r

Or, send a PM to Tanith... she's really into raising and keeping snakes! I think she works with them for her job!

Good Luck!

You pretty much know what to do now, find the warmest spot and there he is. Make the warmest spot and he will come.

I lost a snake in a Uhaul once. Drove from Ohio to Iowa and realized he was gone when I got there. Luckily it was my Ball Python and not that crazy evil Yellow Rat Snake I owned at the time. He was curled up in the seat, I had to tear it out to get him uncoiled from the springs inside!

Hope you find yours!

in my experiance mate (i used to breed snakes as a job) the more you look for it the more it will hide. most of the time thay just turn up out of the blue in places like sinks and stuff like that were there is water . i had a snake show up in the washing machine once was fine and dandy. i would avoid the cricket in a tub idea mate as all thay will do is fill your house with anoying crickets and the snake wont care about them as u know thay eat meat not insects , like i said mate the best thing to do is just to keep you eyes open if u move all the stuff about in your house all you will do is scare the snake into moveing to a diff hideing spot . hope that helps mate i once had a nile monitor escape in a moveng car we had to take the car apart to get the lil bugger out lol

Look in any naturally warm spots. Computer cases, around baseboard. etc... It's cold outside, so I'd bet he'd stay away from the exterior walls.

Put out a heat lamp, and some live food under a glass.

I would expect to find the snake in the back of a closet or some other dark place where it can hide. Corn snakes are nocturnal and the more you move around the less likely that it will come out. You need to create some hiding places for it to hide in and hope to get lucky. Piles of clothes or small boxes could work for a couple of nesting sites. You might want to put out a bowl of water that the snake can drink or bathe in. It sounds like a young snake, when did it last eat?

I would suggest putting the crickets in something with a lid :D

The suggestion of using cickets is to get the snakes attention with something moving "a possible meal". :D

I would never suggest feeding crickets to the snake but since pinkies really dont move much they are not a big draw for something you are trying to coax out of hiding. Snakes are curious creatures when it comes to food and will eat just about anything alive if they get hungry enough. :D

My thoughts on this, as I've had it happen to me. Crickets as bait will not work, as they are not a natural food for corn snakes. At least I've never heard of one eating them.
Corns are escape artists. My cats helped break mine out once when I was in college. It took a few days, but they turned up. Look in warm places (water heater, furnace area, under the fridge, under the oven, around heating resisters) and keep your eyes open. You never know when you'll see part of them.

Having a food item as bait isn't a bad idea. Do you feed live or prekilled? If it is prekilled, it may be easier. Put the prey item in a container that has a small hole in it, just big enough for the snake to get into. Assuming it is hungry and will eat the prey item, if the hole is the right size, it will not be able to get out after it eats the food left for it.

And corn snakes are actually diurnal, not nocturnal. Just an fyi there.

here's a couple pics of mine:

So I had the snake out today and was letting it slither around in my hands. It pooped on me so I put it back in the tank and when I cane back I saw him crawling along the lip inside the tank between the top and tank. They are escape artists! Good thing I have heavy stuff ontop

Look for a better sealing cage, honestly. I have all my snakes currently in Oceanic Lizard Lounges. They are a bit pricy, but worth it (to me).

A couple examples:

I know there are other cages that you can get that seal pretty well, but for small snakes the screen tops on Critter Cages and the top that you can buy separately are too easy for them to escape from.

smokeyandthebandit05
12-01-2009, 11:55 AM
Yeah I know I need a better lid. Its all I had lying around. The only bad thing is that my local pet store isnt that great in the way of lids. They just have the regular screen tops. I guess I'll have to look around online? Any sites I should look at?

Corn snakes are nocturnal do not need a basking light like other reptiles who need the UV light for the D3 and calcium uptake. My preferred caging method was sweater boxes mounted in a rack system where the top of the shelf was tight enough to make sure they couldn't escape. I would use heat mats on the back 1/3 of the shelf for heat. They need a cooler spot to move to, so flourescents lights are better than heat lamps which can overheat the whole cage.

That works for a breeding population, but if you're looking to display an animal, it won't help all that much, honestly, which is what it sounds like he wants to do.

Snakes get their calcium from the prey items they ingest (rodents, etc), unlike most lizards (the insect and veggie eaters), so the lighting isn't critical. Fluorescents can be great for being able to bring out some colors, especially with something like a brazilian rainbow boa (my dream snake). If the cage is large enough, a heat lamp/spot bulb is fine, and gives a more natural feel to the heating spot. Though I will say that I use undertank heaters for my corns and Dumeril's. They need those heated places to aid in digestion.

The problem with feeding it gerbil pinkies is that they can associate the smell of gerbils and not mice with food, and refuse to eat mice, in which case, scenting would be needed to get it to eat mice again. That being said, in general, corns are not considered to be picky eaters, but unless you have a constant supply of gerbils, I'd recommend against it, just in case.

Awesome. I used to have Leopard Geckos and a couple Veileds. Had an opportunity several years ago to get a beautiful Panther (didn't know the locality) for $100, but didn't pull the trigger, and I'm still kicking myself about that one. :(

As of right now, all I have are a pair of corns, a Dumeril's ground (from the Bean Farm, who are friends of mine), and a Green Tree Python (from Signal Herp). Check this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/50682942@N00/tags/snake/) out for a few pics of some of the things I have/had and such.
