Alright, if I've learned anything so far, it's to let cigars rest a bit after receiving them. That being said, these showed up on my doorstep today, and they were just so damned beautiful I had to sin. There's only one vitola out there, so I won't bore you with the details.

Prelight: This thing is gorgeous; dark, oily, and a prelight aroma...let's just say I grew up in the county due north of Lancaster so I know that the Amish use only "natural" fertilizer. This thing smelled like a drive through Lancaster County on a bright spring day. "Barnyard" does not come close to doing it justice.

Let me regress by say I normally am not a big fan of torpedoes as I've found the draw can often be dodgy, but this one was nothing short of perfect. Not much flavor apart from tobacco on the prelight draw.

First 1/3: This kicked off with a bit of spice, which is normal, and serious double espresso. Normally, when people say "coffee," what I get is bitter, but no, this is like sitting at a cafe sipping fresh, well-made espresso. The spice quickly fades, and it is just a wonderful espresso for the rest of the third.

Second 1/3: Almost on queue, the flavor morphs into earth, raisin and dark cocoa. Wow! This baby is just doing nothing short of putting a smile on my face.

Final 1/3: Again, almost on queue, as if the cigar were saying "Please review me in thirds," the flavor changes. The earth and cocoa become serious leather which just builds stronger down to the nub. The raisin goes into pepper. Serious pepper! Black pepper, red pepper, white pepper...did I forget some colors of pepper? They were there too. I nubbed this bad boy like no tomorrow.

It did have some burn issues, but nothing to be unexpected of a smoke ROTT, and certainly nothing to detract from my one hour and 45 minute love-affair.

Value: Depending on source and resourcefulness, this can be had for $2.50 to $3.33/stick. Oh so worth it at twice the price. A new entry, and number 20 in my top 5 by my count. :dr

I am in love with this cigar!

Would I buy it again? And again...and again...

Did I mention I loved this cigar?

CI has them for $99.95 for a box of 30.

"Unholy Cocktail" Torpedo (http://www.cigarsinternational.com/proddisp.asp?item=CS-J6B&stext=DIESEL)

(do not confuse this Diesel cigar with the one that was put out by Rocky Patel several years back!)

SkinsFanLarry

Here's a little more about them from Cigar.com....

One of A.J. Fernandez's most recent gems, Diesel exudes a ton of full-flavors in a medium to full-bodied format allowing for a stout, complex experience with perfect balance.

Abdel "AJ" Fernandez is the protégé of Don Alejandro Robaina, the man who is considered to be the “Godfather” of tobacco. After spending most of his life studying in Cuba under Don Alejandro, Abdel Fernandez moved to Nicaragua to begin producing his own cigars. After only 6 years, Abdel currently produces Rocky Patel’s Fusion, Indian Tabac 10th Anniversary, Padilla Habano, Sol Cubano Cuban Cabinet, Man O' War and Man O' War Ruination, all of which received rave reviews.

Only available in a stout 5"x56 belicoso, Diesel exudes a unique leathery and spicy flavor with a toasty core of espresso beans. The package has a classic, rustic look while the blend is perfectly balanced and will appeal to any aficionado who appreciates premium tobacco. Boasting fillers from Nicaragua's Jalapa, Condega and Esteli regions, each and every leaf is aged for three years, then concealed with a dark and oily Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper. This is one unique cigar you're sure to love.

For the price , these may be my new unbeatable smoke. I tried one ROTP(Plane) last week and it was fairly good. I tried another last night after less than a week in the cooler, and I was rewarded with over 1.5 hours of relaxation. I am not so great at picking out flavors, but the experience was most enjoyable. I did not even realize that almost 2 hours had passed, and I had to get up for work in less than 6 hours. I may do it again tonight, it was worth it

bigheadmark
12-30-2009, 03:55 PM
I take them out and let them acclimate to the proper RH in my humidor..In my experience, cigars that arrive in the mail are usually too wet to smoke for me...
I either dry box them, or place them in the humidor..either way I take them out of the box...
BTW, keep your humidor at 65% RH....trust me, your cigars will smell/taste/smoke much better

MrOneEyedBoh
12-30-2009, 04:30 PM
You can leave them in the box. some say it helps them to age better. But if your not going to age them, then take em out.

Did you smoke them right off the truck? or did you let them rest fora few days first? that can make a huge difference...
IMO, cigars are much better if kept at 65% RH, as opposed to 70% RH...

I am not a fan of Pennsylvania broadleaf, it was used in place of Connecticut
broadleaf during the "Cigar Boom Era" 1993 through 1997 wasn't a fan of it then or now. I recall it was used in many machine made cigars.

It seems to me that the company's using it are trying to hit a price point
at or under $3.00. It is not for me I am past the point of trying to find a cheep daily smoke, as said many times before "Life and time is too short to smoke cheep cigars"

The good side is a myriad of cigars out there now which was not available when I started smoking

I just smoked the first one out of my box... While not the best smoke ever... An honest good smoke! Had a strong barnyard smell out of the box, it was mellow and picked up a bit of spice in the last 1/3rd. Nice smoke volume and was well balanced, although not a ton of flavor complexity. I will easily finish the box and most likely order another box if they are all this decent.

I really hope you mean "life is too short to smoke bad cigars", because 'cheep' and bad are not always the same thing... plenty of cheap, good smokes available these days...

of course maybe you do mean 'cheep' and you enjoy your cigar with a bunch of birds :r

First I'll say, good review I enjoyed reading it. These Pennsylvania Maduros with a lot of ligero filler seem to be a growing trend. RP has a few of them(Winter, Patel Bros, etc). I by no stretch of the imagination have a refined pallete but I know what I like.
To me these cigars are lacking in complexity and flavor. I agree it starts off spicy but after that it blends together and loses something. I've only found one Penn Maduro that I've enjoyed so far and its exclusive to my local B&M.
That said its a quality smoke it just doesn't have that "something" I look for in a cigar. I wouldn't turn one down but I wouldn't buy any either. JMHO.

That's about the conclusion I have come to as well. I think for my money I can find better quality smokes.

I will say that this is the first cigar I have smoked that smelt exactly like a horse stall pre-light. I even let my wife, who was raised around horses, smell it and she was amazed at how it smelt exactly like a horse stall.

There is a difference to me in barnyard and horse stall. I lived on a farm for years and worked a larger one during the summer. A well kept barnyard smells of sweet hay and tiny musk. This cigar smelt like a big pile of horse crap after he ate a bunch of sweet feed.

I got caught up in the hype and picked up a sampler,
I find them to be nothing more then a yard gar,
I guess you get what you pay for.:td
