Photography is one of my hobbies, along side cigars, guns, etc. Thought I'd mess around a little the other night.... Anybody else into photography and made similar shots?

DId you use bounce or straight on?

DId you use bounce or straight on?
Straight on in a dark room with just a lamp aimed at the wall for focusing light. Then made some adjustments in Photoshop CS4. I just really like the darker look in some Cigar ads in magazines, just experimenting with that effect. Hoping to do some shots with lit cigars, but don't smoke in my house, so still gotta figure that one out. Here are a few more from last night.

I'm no master photographer, but the best advice I ever got was to always shoot at the highest resolution your camera offers. You can always downsize in <insert editor of choice here>, but it's pretty tough to go the other way.

Good shots MedicCook. I would recommend trying to get the cigar more in focus, and blur the back ground to bring the cigar out even more. Using a high aperture to create the desired affect.
Chris.
11-12-2009, 07:37 AM
yep on a sunny day like that, bring your f-stop as low as your lens will allow, make sure the ISO is 100 or so, and adjust shutter speed accordingly. :) And making sure the camera focuses on the cigar, should give you a good amount of bokeh.

Mine aren't quite as good as most of the ones in this thread, but I think they came out OK. I don't have a great camera (Canon Powershot G6) for this kind of shooting. It's not an SLR.

A friend let me borrow her Canon Rebel XS that's a 10.1MP DSLR. This is the first time I've gotten to play with a "real" camera and this morning I took a TON of pictures with it. I'll be putting them up here soon.
I've always loved photography and did pretty well with my point and shoot, but this is a whole different world (and I have TONS to learn). I may get one of these... I really dig it.

Did you shoot it in manual or auto mode? What was your ISO set at? Its a perfect macro shot IMO. It just seems a little noisy is why I ask about the ISO. I also think the white background blows it out a bit. Otherwise, a very good picture!

I did it in the auto mode. I think the auto mode put it in macro mode. What is ISO? Also, what is noise and how do I get rid of it?

Most point and shoots have manual modes now. My old cybershot that I got like 7 years ago has manual mode. The iso is only adjustable from 100-400 though.
A higher iso usually causes noise. You can put it into manual mode and adjust the f stop and shutter speed to compensate for a low iso. Iso is how sensitive the camera is to light. The higher the number, the brighter the pic

The picture is crisp and sharp. It looks good. I think that it's te white background that makes it too "bright". I'm a fan of darker pictures though. Since you shot it in auto mode, the ISO probably isn't the problem. What I'm seeing as noise on my phone could simply be the bokeh from being a macro photo.

Bokeh is that blurring effect that you get past the point of focus. Also called depth of field. Macro does a great job of creating that narrow depth of field on point and shoot cameras. Unfortunately it only works on the close up shots.

Unfortunately, my Macro isn't as good as you guys' newer point and shoots. I really need a new one. I'm still not in focus in this pic. I would still have to come back a little bit.
f/2.8, shutter speed 1/20, ISO 100, no flash. My advice is to play around with the settings so you figure out first hand what each setting does. I usually keep the ISO low unless I can't get a good exposure without raising it.

Thanks Dan! For the insect shots, I also use a full set of Kenko Extention Tubes to get roughly 2:1 Magnification (2:1 = 2x actual size). The lens alone will only do 1:1. I just used the lens without tubes, and not at 1:1 for the cigar shots. Might have to try that though, tubes and all on a cigar.

I've used a couple of mine for a wallpaper as well. Speaking of, if anybody see's anything of mine they wish to use as a wallpaper, just let me know. I'll get you the full size image or a size suitable for your desktop resolution. I run my res at 1680x1050 and they look good on my monitor.
Chris.

I actually prefer the size that photobucket shrinks to for my monitor with 1440X900 resolution. I don't like it when the picture takes the entire desktop. It makes it hard for me to see the picture and the shortcut icons.

One of my new year's resolutions is to learn how to use my canon rebel more effectively.
Build a lightbox today and started to snap some pics of some of my cigars. Here are the results.
Any feedback would be appreciated. Just want to learn how to snap better pictures.

Your white balance is off. Double check that it matches your lighting setup. It also looks like several of your pics are out of focus. Make sure your lens can take macro shots that close. The rebel should make a beep sound once the image is in focus.
EDIT: as the slideshow progressed, it looks like you got the focus problem solved. Just gotta work on that WB.
maverickdrinker
12-25-2009, 07:35 PM
Thanks Chris. Can you tell me how to check my white balance? I am really new at this.
Thanks for your suggestions. The rebel did beep when it was in focus. Starting to get the hang of this.
Chris.
12-25-2009, 07:50 PM
You have the rebel XT or XTi? There is a dedicated button for WB at the bottom of the directions buttons next to the screen on the XT and XTi. It looks like it's a round button just above the directional buttons on the XSi...
Your goal is to get the picture to look how you see it and the whites to be true white. If you are using fluorescent light, set it to the long bulb, etc...
EDIT: Something just hit me. What mode are you shooting in? Please don't tell me auto. lol! I can't remember if you can make adjustments to wb and ISO and all that in auto on a dslr. I haven't had one in about a year. You should really try your hand at shooting in manual mode. It's the only way to take full advantage of having a nice DSLR IMO. It just takes practice learning what settings to use for shutter speed, ISO, Aperature, WB, AF, and all the other cool settings.

For this type of shooting I think Aperture priority is just as good as manual. Just imho.

Av is fine, but you learn more when you shoot in Manual. I always suggest shooting in manual. Especially to people who don't know much about the camera yet.

Don't normally try to take pictures for photography purposes, just to show off bombs and such. But, without any photshop or anything else, here are 5 Kristoff Criollo Lanceros.
I really like the way this shot came out. Maybe it was cigars themselves which made this such a good shot.

i believe the small pics are from when you upload them onto your post from your computer.
The large photos are from using the IMG tags on your photo host server.
