So I posted a review of the SCCC, which turned into a discussion of AJ Fernandez. I'd like to put together a definitive list of his blends for my to-do list (and anyone else that likes his blends). Feel free to edit the list:
Casa Fernandez
La Herencia Cubana
Man O' War
Man O' War Ruination
Rocky Patel Fusion (does he do the Double Maduro as well)
Padilla Habano
Sol Cubano Cuban Cabinet

Ah, forgot the ITC 10th. I read in a review somewhere that he's done a couple of blends for Gurkha, but it didn't specify which ones.

Thanks for the update. How are those Diesels? I've seen them pop up on cbid recently.
Also, I found a mention on a review earlier that Fernandez blends Reposado. Is this the same as the Reposado '96 that's on CI? They don't mention him by name, but they are made in Nicaragua.

I see in the new CI catalog an LHC Oscuro Fuerte, which as far as I've been able to tell is also made by Fernandez. Same PA broadleaf maddie wrapper as the Diesel. I'll have to keep an eye out for deals on a 5er.

AJ does not make the Casa Fernandez. This is made by Tabacalera Tropical.

Don Fernando

I hate to say this, but Wayner is right. This is the reply I got from Tabacalera Tropical when I asked if AJ Fernandez was the blender of Casa Fernandez:

AJ Fernandez is not the blender or the manufacturer of any of the Casa Fernandez Cigars and never has been! We are part of the agricultural conglomerate Aganorsa in Nicaragua and use 100% Aganorsa Leaf in our highly rated cigar blends...Aganorsa is the largest cuban seed tobacco grower in Nicaragua with farms in Jalapa Valley, Condega Valley, and Esteli. In the current issue of Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 cigars for 2009, we had three of our world class cigar blends listed one of which is our family name Casa Fernandez!

I trust this clarifies your confusion...

Sincerely,

Medium, starts of spicy and peppery, then the chocolate flavor came in (just faint) and it mellows down a bit.

I just tried the 5 vegas triple a. The PA Maduro wrapper is about as oily as any wrapper I have seen. It also has a ton of veins in it, but it sure looked beautiful with all the oil in there. I think I like the Diesel a little better than this blend but we shall see after I have a couple more.

This afternoon at the Barn herf I had the best "AJ" blend to date.
Adam(TG) created a couple of Frankengars after the recent thread about wrapper importance. He switched wrappers on a Ruination and a 99 Boli Corona Extra. The Ruination with the Cuban wrapper was amazing. Smooth but still with a hint of spicyness in the background. The opposite wrap with the Ruination wrapper was bland and boring. Amazing what a good wtapper can do to a cigar.:banger

After smoking that cigar I came home and ordered a box of 30 with a free fiver from Cigar.com. I already had nine left but it was a really impressive cigar. Would be worth it at $8 no less $2.50 a piece.

According to a CI/Cigar Bid Special AJ does blend the Fusion MM.

AJ ’Abdel’ Fernandez is the next big thing. It all began in Cuba, where AJ began working with Cuban cigar-making legend Don Alejandro Robaina learning everything there is to know about tobacco growing, fermentation, curing, blending, and cigar making. For nearly 20 years, AJ absorbed this information, and his growing list of super-premium blends were designed to show you how much he learned. Indeed, AJ is climbing the ranks among the world’s top cigar-makers, and this 5-Star Sampler was designed to get the two of you better acquainted.

The AJ Fernandez 5-Star Sampler includes:
1 - Gurkha Sherpa Toro (6" x 50)
1 - Man O’ War Robusto (5.5" x 50)
1 - Padilla Habano Torpedo (6.25" x 52)
1 - Rocky Patel Fusion Churchill (7" x 48)
1 - Rocky Patel Double Maduro Toro (6.5" x 52)

This list helps. Thank you.
Did an AJ Fernandez zoom on cigarbid -- spent an evening bidding on his cigars.
The boxes arrived today -- La Herencia Cubana Oscuro Fuerte toro, Man O'War toro and Nica Libre torpedo.
Like the extra-thick design on La Herencia box. And the cigars' heft matches the boxes' muscle.
The Man O'War box arrived busted. When you un-snap the box, the top comes right off, leaving the hinges on the box bottom, but cigars seem fine.

Like the extra-thick design on La Herencia box. And the cigars' heft matches the boxes' muscle.
The Man O'War box arrived busted. When you un-snap the box, the top comes right off, leaving the hinges on the box bottom, but cigars seem fine.

SOrry about the MoW box but that's a heck of delivery.

I picked up a box of Diesels and the regular LHCs from cbid a few weeks ago. Nice packaging on both.
Sorry to hear about your MoW box. At least the sticks are ok.

I *try* to let new smokes sit for at least a couple of weeks, especially if they come from CI/cbid. It's tough sometimes, because I've only been smoking cigars for a bit over a year, and there's tons of stuff out there that I want to try. Having a cooler stocked with my favorite cheap smokes helps fight the urge to smoke that new buzztastic stick too soon and taint the experience. :r

I was perusing the Robustojoe.com and found the following listed as AJ Fernandez blends and some other supposed AJ stuff.....

* Gurkha Microbatch S-2
* Gurkha Microbatch C-10
* Gurkha Microbatch TPB-1
* Gurkha Park Avenue
* Indian Tabac Split Decision

Also if you look at this link at Cigar.com (http://www.cigar.com/catalog/index.asp?a=01162008) about the Indian Tabac Nopareil.

The secret to Indian Tabac Nonpareil rests in its specially selected tobacco, which is fermented using a secret family recipe employed by A.J. Fernandez, the owner of the factory producing not only Nonpareil but also the coveted Indian Tabac 10th Anniversary and Split Decision. This unique tobacco, combined with Rocky Patel's blending expertise, has made Indian Tabac Nonpareil a cigar that is truly "matched by no other". Filled with Nicaraguan long fillers, Nonpareil is wrapped with either a creamy
Connecticut wrapper or a spicy Habano seed wrapper, leading to a complex, medium bodied blend.

Sol Cubano Artisan
AJ (Fernandez) immediately started to explain that this was his best roller and the only one in the factory qualified to make the sought after Sol Cubano Artisan (http://www.cigar.com/newsletter/archive.asp?a=022008), a barber pole and pinstripe cigar unlike any other in the cigar industry. Watching her work was captivating, and no one moved for at least 30 minutes as we looked on in utter amazement.

Got an AF question for you all. Just smoked a MOW that I got in a sampler from the devil site, not sure if it was the regular or the ruination? It was a torpedo that had a band around the foot. The main band looked like the standard, but I see none of them with a band around the foot. Ruination or regular blend?

A great smoke regardless, tempted to buy a box but not sure which one I just smoked.

Traded some unbanded sticks with kenstogie (I should have checked this thread before making my guesses, Ken! ;)) and smoked them all in the last few weeks. Four of the sticks were by Fernandez--my blind reviews are here:

Drew (druturn) was just telling me about those Achilles. He said it was a fantastic smoke. I may have to look into this sampler as well. :hm

To piggy back on this, I absolutely LOVED the Achilles. I have only had one in my cigar smoking life, so I can't attest to the consistency of it but all I remember about it is that it was one of (and probably still is) my favorite sticks. The only notes I made on the back of the band was "medium body, smooth and light spice" but to this day I remember how good that smoke was.

CI has the Padilla Habanos Toro listed at $164.00 a box , as I checked this the other day I panicked and thought I better check C-Bid . Won a fiver and 2 full boxes(55 cigars) for abut $120.00 total . I've been hitting alot of these lately so I thought I should stock up . The price on these has risen sharply since I first tried them last year . Hopefully CI's listed price is an error but I really don't think so . :tu

CI usually lists prices on the high side. On a separate note I just picked up a box (40 ct) of Reposados for $53. Can't beat that about 1.30 a stick! Usually $99 and a bargain for that price too. These will be going up in price I guarentee it.

So far, on the 12 Angry Men sampler, I've had:

Padilla Achilles: Awesome. Not intense, but really good flavor, draw and burn.

Man Of War: Seems like it could have used more humi time, but really good. Really intense flavor, decent burn, good to tight draw.

Sol Cubano CC : Very good flavor, that is unlike most cigars I've had. Excellent burn and draw. I bought a box. I really like these.

Nica Libre: Taste was decent, but could have been better. Burn was off and there was some tunneling. Draw was too loose. Not a bad smoke, but I don't think I need to invest in a box or anything.

Gave away my diesel to a friend, but he said it was great. I'll probably try to get a box or more of these somehow next month.

So far, I've been really impressed with the sampler.

I'm glad you like the site, but would like to know what you find to be incomplete. I'm always looking for ways to improve the thing. Also, if anyone has something to add or correct on The Cigar Blender Database, please feel free to contact me through the site and suggest any changes. Thanks

Also, I just posted an article about AJ. I recently visited his factory and was blown away by the quality of his new cigars.

All the new Fernandez blends are terrific... especially the San Lotano Habano. It's a very strong cigar right from the jump, but has a complex smoothness that remains throughout the length of the stick. It a cigar that gets your attention with the first puff. It's only available through local B&Ms but I think it will eventually be sold at cigarsinternational.com. but that's just conjecture on my part. I don't have any official information about that.

Just got an email from cigar.com and saw the Ave Maria cigar. I've got to say, as far as cigar bands go, this is probably the most kick-ass cigar band I've seen. Unfortunately that said to me "watch out, it probably sucks." But reading that it's from AJ Fernandez, it kept my hopes from dying completely. I mean seriously though, look at how beautiful this is:

http://img.cigarsinternational.com/p/500/cs/a/cs-ave.jpg

The Holy Grail...what a monster of a cigar. 7.1x58?! (that's not the one pictured) Jeez. But yeah, I'd love to see a review on this line before I pick some up. Cigar.com has a sampler of each size for $49.95, but it's back ordered at the moment :(

I am not the norm when it comes to AJ's cigars. I have not smoked any of the newer stuff coming out, but out of 11 different blends of his I have liked 2 of them. The rest just didn't do it for me. And the worse of the bunch being the MoW. I have tried it many times because everybody talks great about it, everyone I have tried has been unsmokable either because of taste or construction.

tx tuff, did you make certain that they were properly humidified? I know that I have gotten cigars in the mail that were EXTREMELY" wet...i take mail order cigars and place them in the humi for several weeks @ 60% humidity...if they are extremely wet, then I dry box them.

Not sure if it's on the list or not but he is also blending the San Lotano. Keep in mind this brand is a little backwards as the Connecticut is the fullest as it is a spice bomb with an Ecuadorian Connie wrapper, the Habano is middle of the road which is not too unusual but the Maduro is the Mildest cigar of the bunch and is on the upper end of Mild at best. I was never a huge fan of the Connecticut shade wrapper unless I am looking for something to smoke in the early morning hours but the San Lotano Connecticut is a fantastic smoke and I would highly recommend it just NOT for your first smoke of the day unless you like to start the day with a lot of pepper. The first few samplings of this stick have been very spicy with spice right out of the gate and than mellowing a bit about midway and than the spice kicks back in for the final 1/3. Trying to avoid buying a box of these as I am honestly trying to cut back. The Maduro just did nothing for me and the Habano is just a touch above average.

I don't smoke anything right off the truck. I keep my cabinet at 65% and don't have any problems with my other sticks. In fact I love Nicaraguan cigars and thats pretty much all I smoke. I'm not dogging AJ, hell he is doing something right, look at all the people here that love the cigars. They just don't do it for me.

The only ones I have had with a construction problem have been the MoW. All the others smoked good (although some to lose) I just didn't care for the taste.

+1....except more like 14 or 15 of them. Few were awful. Fewer were great. Just not in my wheelhouse, I guess.
I will say that I received a RP Fusion (or 'Double'?) Maduro lancero (green band) in a sampler one time that was tremendous. Wouldn't mind revisiting that one. Any of the others are just OK .....at cigarbid prices.

That's I great overview of AJ's flavor-sense. He has a definite personality when it comes to cigar blending that the sticks in that sampler shows it off nicely. He pioneered the use of Pennsylvania Broadleaf as a wrapper and it's distinct flavor is evident in many of his cigars. Here's more about that:

CI overrun bundles? depending on size I thought some were San Latano Habanos or Maduros while other were MOW etc. Seemed like they were hit or miss on which ones but a size and wrapper description along with a little search on his brands that cigar.com and CI sale might help narrow it down.

I rely on this list constantly. Much thanks Jared.
Just nabbed a bundle of AJ overruns from CBid. They are maduro 6.25 x 54. Look scrumptious. May be Pueblo Dominicano, but not sure.
Anybody seen a 2013 updated AJ list?

I didn't know the Gurkha Park Avenue was an AJ Blend... They seem pretty cheap in most magazines I have seen them in... was interested in the Maduro... anyone have any opinions on these?

When you buy the overruns do you get the choice between maduro and natural wrapper, or is it all random?

I do not believe you get to pick that.

No choices -- just the shape. Nabbed a bundle of 20 torpedoes for $22, so don't mind the serendipity of the deal. I feel fortunate to get any maduros by the phenomenal Mr. Fernandez.
Earlier, called Nico, who takes care of me in CI customer service, to see if I could get a bundle of San Lotano Ovals overruns, but he said you got to take whatever they grab in the warehouse. No complaints -- is a mondo deal.
Am stumped by identity of these smokes. Need to let them rest, but will smoke one during wild card playoffs, since this was a wild card bargain!

Just learned that CI and cigar.com and CBid, who are prime vendors of AJ's wonderful smokes, are owned by this Euro monarch:

That was at CBid. CI ran a special of $29.95 any AJ overruns bundle in November.
Am a sucker for deals.

Not a fan of AJF. However, I'm intrigued by how prolific he is and by the variety he produces. So I do keep an eye on what he's got his name on.

Add Pinolero to the list. Better than most of the previous ones listed.

Looking over that list and considering Pinolero, I'm struck by a bit of an anomaly for me. I generally prefer fuller, peppery, strong cigars. However, of the AJF cigars listed, I'd only recommend his milder blends; RP Sig, Park Avenue, Pinolero, Micro TPB-1

Rob, I haven't had the Park Avenue Maduro, but the connie is a very pleasant cigar. Easy draw, creamy smoke - very good for morning smoke and for offering to new BOTL.

As to the discussion about Oliva above, I don't know much about it, but I do think that it is a potentially inaccurate leap to suggest that something made in an Oliva factory should be considered an Oliva product. I believe that nearly all 'new' blenders contract out their production to bigger, established factories until they get big enough to build their own factory. Perdomo, RP, DE, Hansotia, Pete....I believe all started out by having their blends rolled in Oliva, or some other big factories. Or, if not started, then at least moved to moved production to someone else's big factory after small, homegrown production couldn't keep up with demand. It actually gets very very confusing trying to attribute a cigar to someone in particular, since the tobacco may have been grown by Plasencia, blended by AJF, and produced at an Oliva factory.

Be careful, I got a scolding from another site for talking about this! JK, the CA group is way too cool to get up in a wad over company affiliations. Scandinavian Tobacco is a rather large distributed and seams to own much of our industry.

Scolding is fine. Piling on hostility and bullying drove me from another site:

These are new and the more I have the better they get. Priced reasonably too.
