Phillies are gamers and have a good line up and pitching. Should be well matched. I think our offense will really wake up this series though especially with RISP.

Yeah, Phillies won last year.
In the decade of 2000, the Yankees are now in their third World Series. Hmmm....
In their history, they are now in their 40th. Hmmm.... Of which they have won 26. Hmmm....
In 2009, the Yankees won 103 games, the Phillies 93. My simple math says we won 10 more.
I'll bite even further.
Here are the 2009 stats for both on things that shed "excitement".
Runs Phillies 820 Yankees 915
Hits Phillies 1439 Yankees 1604
HRs Phillies 224 Yankees 244
RBI Phillies 788 Yankees 881
Avg. Phillies .258 Yankees .283
Slugging Phillies .447 Yankees .478
Add 103 wins to 93 and I can clearly see why you think the Phillies are a more exciting team.:r As I said earlier, blind.

You know Carlos, I knew I'd probably catch some flack for that...I could have taken the high road and played it safe predicting a 6 or 7 game series, but I went with the bold prediction instead. The Phillies have won 16 out of their last 20 playoff games and I hope they can continue that dominance. I'd rather have a .800 win percentage in the playoffs than a .636 regular season record any day.
And like you I feel I can safely argue who the better team is. We just may not agree on the team. :D Batter for batter, pitcher for pitcher. If the back end of the Phillies bullpen can hold it together, I see the Phillies in 5. I know that's a big "if", but that's what makes a prediction a prediction. The Yankees have the best postseason relief pitcher in the history of baseball, no doubt about it. But aside from him, what I've seen from the other relievers in the post season has been less than stellar.

I disagree on the less than stellar pitching. Other than really one game, they did the job.
I already posted stats on both teams. If a better team is measured by hits, home runs, batting average, slugging percentage and overall wins, only a Phillies fan can argue their team is the best.
Time will tell. I am just not a blind fan that can't see the two best teams in the league are facing each other and as I have said statistically, the Yankees ARE the better team. Please show me something else on paper as I did here that shows the contrary. I just think it is blind and loony to not respect the Yankees as a formidable force and think this can end in 5 games, with a Phillies win, when again, they are statistically the better team.
I have seen crazier things happen but I have also tried to fart and paint it green and haven't been able to.

Noting that I am not the defender of the Phillies. Stats don't always equate to wins (or your definition on "things that shed excitement"). or your definition on "things that shed excitement").
I was simply addressing your point the Phillies are a more exciting team.
If the Yankees get more hits, more runs, better batting average, better slugging average, and more wins, how can one say the Phillies are more exciting unless you have very dark glasses in a very dark room. What then constitutes excitement may be the question to ask.
If the Phillies win, they will have beaten the best team in baseball in 2009 and will tip my hat to them. I just won't insult them or any Phillies fan by thinking it could be done in 5 or 6. This is not the first two rounds of the playoffs. This winds it down to the two best. I frankly see this going 7 and ending in NY, with long sad bus ride home to Philadelphia for the Phillies.

Well, seems the Phillies will have to do it against better completely overall stats by the Yankees and against odds makers.
http://sports-odds.com/baseball/102609-phillies-vs-yankees-2009-world-series-odds-predictions.html
Seems they had it pegged back in February as well.

Odds for the ALCS and NLCS.
Yankees alone have same chance as the three other teams combined!
Las Vegas, Nevada (October 13, 2009) - Using Las Vegas odds, the teams expected to make and win the World Series can be identified. RJ Bell of Pregame.com provides the most accurate possible consensus of a sporting event's true odds.
Odds to win the 2009 World Series:
New York Yankees: 1 to 1 (50% chance)
LA Dodgers: 5 to 1 (16.6% chance)
Philadelphia Phillies: 5 to 1 (16.6% chance)
Los Angeles Angels: 5 to 1 (16.6% chance)
Now we just have to live up to it.:D

:tpd:
I could not find anything to agree with more than that statement.
All can keep highlighting this comment all you want.
The point of the stats was not to show a guaranteed win. I am no fool and have seen many underdogs win in my 50 years on this Earth.
The point of the stats was that a comment was made that the Phillies were a more "exciting" team. I highlighted stats that to me and most anyone, illustrates the Yankees far exceeding the Phillies in all categories.
So, while stats don't guarantee a win, watching a team that hit more times on base, slammed more balls out of the park, had a better slugging percentage and WON 10 more games, more walk off wins and have the best closing reliever to have played the game, it is hard to say the Phillies are more exciting. However, I guess beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and we are often blinded into believing things that are not always as one sees them. Let's just say the Phillies in 3 as that seems to be possible in the eyes of some Phillies fans as the Yankees may not show up for game 4 and quit.

The stats are fun to look at, but they only tell us what’s already been done and not what’s going to happen. That said, they are concrete and one can’t really argue them.
All those numbers tell me is that this is going to be one heck of a series…..I think we all agree on that!
Both teams have momentum changing power from beginning to end in their lineup. As a Phillie fan I hope the team can keep the pace they had in the NLCS clincher. The boys were scary that night.
Prediction:
- The Phils will take one game in NY.
- We’ll win two at home, but won’t be lucky enough to end it in Philly.
- The Yanks are going to win game 6 at home in convincing fashion
- There will be several lead changes through game 7, but the Phils will win
it with a bomb in the end….maybe even extra innings!!

You seem to be harping on the greatness of the Yankees' regular season achievements. Yippee!
Yes, they had the best record in baseball. Yes, they were the only team to win 100 games this year. If they were in the NHL they could parade the President’s Trophy down Broadway.:wnr
Winning the most regular season games didn't help the 2001 Mariners (116 wins - lost in 5 games in the LCS), or the 2004 Cardinals (105 wins - got swept in the WS), or the 2008 Angels (100 wins (only 100 win team) - lost in 4 games in the LDS).
And I'm not sure why you feel insulted as you insinuated. I didn't realize this was such a touchy subject. If someone predicted the Yankees in 5 I wouldn't be insulted. I wouldn't be shocked by any outcome in this series. Seriously bro, don't take it so seriously. :tu
And predicting the Phillies in 5 does not make me a "blind fan". The Phillies certainly have their faults, their bullpen and bench topping the list. I was just making a prediction for the series. Before the playoffs started, I said the one team I didn't want to face from the NL in was the Rockies. I thought they may lose the series to them, and I thought they matched up better against everyone else in the league. If not for a very timely hit by Howard, there would have been a game 5 and everything about this post season could have been different. Oh, that's right... I'm a blind fan, I must have predicted a sweep.
I have trouble keeping up with the banter, so don't take any lack of timely responses as avoidance. It also causes rambling posts like this one.

Not insulted.
Used it as a "term" meaning you don't give the Yankees the time of day if one thinks they can only win one game.
As far as their greatness in 2009, I think I have covered why those stats were listed. Nothing to do with a prediction. All to do with "excitement" comment.
Again, not a fool here. The word upset exists for a reason in sports.
Just can't imagine anyone being serious about such a bold prediction.

It's entertainment. Overpaid adults playing a game. It gives us something to watch and talk about so we don't have to focus on all of the ills of society.
Funny you mention that. I was just remembering this story.
Hope all enjoy it as much as I enjoy remembering it.
I just remembered my son's third game of the little league championship game.
They had split the first two games and were playing the third and final game.
Bases were loaded for the opposing team.
If they got one more out, my son's team would win the championship.
They had played their hearts out and were the bad news bears looking to win it all.
The coach was on third shouting advice around.
The ball was hit, ground ball to third, about 10' from the bag.
Fundamentals 101 says run over and step on the bag as the runner was late leaving second for third, you would have the forced out, and game over.
Instead, the coach yells at the third baseman to throw to home. He does. He puts the ball on top of the batting cage and it gets stuck.
Two runs come in. My son's team loses the game.
Morals learned:
1 - the coach was an ahole who knew little about baseball.
2 - kids will cry when they lose and they did.
3 - my son was not crying. Asked me to buy him a soda and a hot dog. Told me it was just a game and couldn't understand why cry over something already done.
Boy did I learn from my kid that day. So while a die hard Yankees fan, if they win, we celebrate. If they lose, not much will have changed in my life and they instead have seen a whole lot of money I can only dream of, to play a game.

Ooops, I just noticed you're actually from North PA, I mean South Jersey.

Prediction? Phillies in 5.
Joel, I see THAT as "Rollins-esque", brother. And no, I don't think the Yanks will sweep - but I certainly don't think they will win only 1 game either. I expect the series to play out pretty much the same way it did against the Angels, with most of the games being ones either could win. Yet anyone who looks at it objectively must admit the Yankees have the edge in - well, in everything, really.

Joel,
Just realized it and totally feel for you.
I have a new found understanding and sort of feel bad.
You are from "South Jersey".
The land of nowhere. You are not accepted by northern jersey, where the majority of the population resides. On top of that, no local team anywhere in sight to call your own so understandably you look for comfort across the river, in Philadelphia, the land of brotherly love.
Makes sense.

Carlos,
What a stroll down memory lane.
My Dad grew up in Newark and went to Weequahic High School and Rutgers law School in Newark.
Him and my grandfather had a law firm on Academy Street for more than 50 years.
As a kid, my Mom would put me on the train from the shore and my Dad picked me up in Newark for dinner at Don Pepe's before heading over to Yankee Stadium to sit in our seats along the 3rd base line where my jaw dropped as Greg Nettles leaped through the air to catch line drives and Bucky Dent ripped out Red Sox fan's hearts with shots over the left field wall.
I broke my arm jumping my dirtbike and the cast was signed by Thurman Munson at batting practice when I was 9.
Yankees in 6, Pete sobbing like a little girl as the Yankees collect #27, with no other ball club even in their rear view mirror for all of time.
It's gotta suck not liking the Yankees, but if you grow up in my family, you'll never know the feeling.
My 4 year old daughter needs to be reminded its, "Jeter", not "Cheater", but already knows the good guys wear black hats and pinstripes.

I went to Mt. Carmel elementary school right next to Independence Park in the Ironbound.
Graduated from East Side High right down the street.
Went to NJIT for a year in downtown Newark, then went across the street to Rutgers where I graduated from.
Spent most of my life in or around Newark.
Got to see Munson and bs with him overlooking the bullpen in Shea, when the Yankees played there. Signed a paper for me but as a kid will do, lost it.
I have my 2 year old grandson who yells "Go Yankees" whenever he sees a baseball team playing. Picked up a Jeter jersey for him when I went to Yankee stadium this past May.
Man it is fun to be a Yankees fan.
I will try to post later my favorite piece of Yankees history. My son and I met Mickey Mantle just a few months before he died. Got a ball signed and was nice enough to put "No. 7" beneath his name.
I will always cherish that ball. Don't care what it can be worth. Will never part willingly in my lifetime.

Thank you for the offer, but aside from my "no gambling" rule, which I rarely violate, I never like to bet on either my Yankees or my Tar Heels: If I win, I've already won and am happy with that; if I lose, I've lost twice.
Besides, despite the fact that I want another WS win, I'm really just happy to be there. Too many of you seem to have forgotten that, when the season started, many baseball pundits predicted the Red Sox and the Rays to battle for the AL East, with the Yankees out in the cold. There were too many questions in their minds, from an ageing Jeter and Andy, and Posada, Mo, Matsui, both ageing and coming off injuries, A-Rod hobbled physically and personally, Cano's sophomore slump, the whole Joba issue,Melky's ability to produce and who would play CF if he didn't, where would their bullpen come from, plus how the new people like C.C., A.J., Swisher, and Tex would adjust to the big stage in NYC - not to mention Wang, who was no factor in the long run.
I want 4 more wins this year, but 110 so far ain't bad.

I'll bite even further.
Here are the 2009 stats for both on things that shed "excitement".
Runs Phillies 820 Yankees 915
Hits Phillies 1439 Yankees 1604
HRs Phillies 224 Yankees 244
RBI Phillies 788 Yankees 881
Avg. Phillies .258 Yankees .283
Slugging Phillies .447 Yankees .478
Add 103 wins to 93 and I can clearly see why you think the Phillies are a more exciting team.:r As I said earlier, blind.
Hey Carlos, something came to me tonight while watching the game. If the Phillies were able to plug a DH into the lineup every game, their stats would be awfully similar.

Not really. If they had the DH every game that would mean they'd be playing in the AL east, and with the record they had wouldn't have made the playoffs ;)
Lee pitched great. CC pitched ok. It's only one game, still a lot of baseball to be had.

I was looking at the stats Carlos listed. Not sure how that equates to "not really". And to think the Phillies wouldn't have made the playoffs is an assumption. I, on the other hand, assume they would have. Maybe if they win back to back World Series you'll give them some credit.

I was looking at stats too. They had a worse record than the Red Sox and Angels, if they played everyday with a DH they would not have made the playoffs with the record they had. I don't think having Ben Francisco or Matt Stairs in the field everyday would have very much impact.
I do give them credit, they have a great team. If you look over my posts there is no Philly hate. This is the match up I wanted, I even made a post two months back stating so. I reserve my burning hatred for the Red Sox ;)

Having Ben Francisco or Matt Stairs in the lineup everyday certainly would have been a vast improvement over having a pitcher bat 3+ times a game. With either one of them playing everyday (or at least platooning) I think they would have had more HRs, probably RBIs, and possibly hits, runs and SLG% too. Innings would have been extended that ended because of a pitcher's ineffectiveness during an at bat.
And no one knows what their record would have been had they had a DH...each game would have played out differently.
I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.:tu

Honestly, last night was exactly what we (Phillies fans) hoped for and expected with Lee on the mound. He's been incredible this post season. It's a different ball game when he's pitching.

You mean the Yank's pen? A season era close to 4 ain't gonna cut it against the Phillies. I know that's not bad nowadays, but it's teh suck when you're putting it up against the World Champions.
If the Yanks starters don't go deep, they are in huge trouble. The Phillies will absolutely shell their bullpen just like they did last night.
There used to be a day when a bullpen's era was supposed to be around 2. It gave a team a chance to do well.
I promise you, a 3.79 era bullpen ain't gonna get it in the Series. (and that works for both sides.)
I sure hope the Yanks have what it takes to make this exciting tonight.
One game does not a Series make, but I'm not making any bets on the Yanks after they didn't show up last night.
What's scarier is that they threw the kitchen sink at the Phils and came up empty.

I think that's going to end up being the key in the series...for either the Phils or the Yanks. When through, I think it was 3 1/3, and Burnett was close to 60 pitches I liked the Phillies chances, but he did a nice job of settling down and working some quicker innings.

While I will gladly admit Lee was on fire the first game, I was blown away by the movement on Burnett's pitches last night. There were some that looked like they were headed for the batter and would move right into the strike zone at the last second. The dip on his breaking ball was amazing.

I kinda got robbed out of watching the game last night.
It was on all night, but too much stuff was going on to pay close attention.
I did get to see aRod get beat up again. The Phils have definately made some sense out of moving the ball around on him. He's swinging, but they're staying one guess ahead of him. That's going to be a fun story to watch as it plays out.
I was surprised by the Phil's tentative baserunning late. That's always a tough call from the bench. Let it hang out and get skewered by the press or play it safe and rely on your bats?
The way they hit last night, I really thought they'd be more agressive when they had a shot. Kinda blew my mind.
The officiating is still subpar, but it seems to be coming around. I'd like to see the "FoxBox" go away completely. It's annoying and isn't helping anything. Balls and strikes are whatever the umpire makes them. If you see three pitches over the plate, as a hitter, you better jump. There's not a major league pitcher who's not going to take advantage of a 28 inch wide home plate when he's got it, and rightfully so.
Props to AJ and Pedro both. Man, I love watching good pitching.
There's some of the most brilliant minds in ball in this series. I can't wait for the next game. :tu

It is truly shameful.
It has been horrific with all the series.
Unreal that six umpires gathered to make a call where the dirt was kicked up in the air by the ball, yet called it an out.
Given it was a close call to be exact, I truly wonder how the other five had a perspective in that discussion.

I swear I heard new cuss words that were yet to be invented.
We were both laying on our sectional sofa, shaped like a V, with our heads meeting at the center and our feet towards the two ends. Each time she yelled, I jumped. My left ear is still throbbing. I finally had to leave her alone and go to the bedroom to watch it. Then in the top of the 8th, she comes over to the bedroom. Thank God Pedro was out of the game by then.:r
Kinda off topic, but still interesting.
On one of my several trips to the Dominican Republic, I asked one of the kids in my bad spanish, why they all Red Sox caps and he replied, "because we are Dominican, and so is Pedro Martinez".
They start very young there and use anything they can get their hands on to fashion a bat, ball, and bases. I would say 90% of the hats you see are Red Sox hats.
I never could figure it out as just about every MLB team has Dominicans on the roster. I even sat with Jose Lima on a flight and never saw an Astro hat in all my trips, but he recieved a heros welcome in Puerto Plata airport.

It is truly shameful.
It has been horrific with all the series.
Unreal that six umpires gathered to make a call where the dirt was kicked up in the air by the ball, yet called it an out.
Given it was a close call to be exact, I truly wonder how the other five had a perspective in that discussion.
I wish I could have overheard it just for laughs.
hahaha....I was thinking the same thing.....gotta feeling "replay" buzz will be high at the winter meetings...

Interesting read.
The Phillies have Mariano figured out.
Will we just add them to the list that thought the same thing or will they indeed be added to the list containing the Diamondbacks? Time will tell.

I heard it... It went something like this.
1st Base Ump: "Oh shiit, big arss Howard blocked my view of the ball. I don't want to blow this call. You know everyone at home is watching the replay in slow motion."
The rest of the Umps: "Dude you were like 15 feet away from the play, if you didn't see it, how in the hell are we supposed to?" Here you go again, making us overpaid umps blow another play. Well let's all stand around sratching our butts, so we look like were taking this seriously."
1st Base Ump: "I got it, let's just throw a coin up in the air, heads the ball was caught on the fly, tails the ball one hopped. It's a 50/50 chance of making the right call."
Home plate Ump: "Sounds like a plan to me. Since I've been blowing calls all series, 50% sure sounds good to me."
The rest of the Umps: "Ok, now who has a coin... No one responds..."
1st Base Ump: "Man F this, Howard is a big dude and I'm not going back there and reversing my call. I'll take the 50% chance that I got the call right. It's only game #2 and neither team will remember the call when its all said and done."
The rest of the Umps: "Agreed!"

Ade, I bet you got more than half of that right on.
The way I look at it each team lost an opportunity to possibly score some runs, so I call it even. I don't feel like either call significantly influenced the outcome of the game. The Yankees got a good win and now it's time to get ready for game 3.

Well, that game last night played out pretty much as I forsaw it, except that A.J managed to keep his focus and not have that one crappy inning. As for Pedro - well, he was Pedro against the Yanks, as usual. He kept them off-balance for the most part, made a couple of mistakes he hasn't the stuff to get away with, and was done after 100 pitches. Hey, that's him - unless he gets squeezed, when he then gives up 5 or 6 runs after 3 innings. Well, nobody got squeezed last night - I swear, that plate was about 22 inches wide, for both sides.
Speaking of both sides, the "double play" in the bottom of the 7th was offset by the "double play" in the top of the 8th, and was a wash. As for the Phillies figuring out Mo, I believe they have - come up, take weak hacks and hope to make contact and get some bleeders, raise their false hopes, then go back to the dugout as losers. :r

I like that they don't throw their guys on short rest. Never did it last year, although they (the media) were contemplating it in the first series with the Brewers. Pitchers in this era aren't used to it, and most are nowhere near as effective as they are on regular rest. I agree with the decision, regardless of where the series stands. It will be interesting to see how effective Sabathia is with 3 days, assuming he pitches game 4 (is that definite?).
Of course, if there's a 7th game, everyone is available to pitch, but I don't think it will go that long...Phillies will finish the job before then.

Problem is he won't be playing against the Angels.... Here's his line from last year on 3 days against the Phils in the NLDS:
3 2/3 innings, 6 hits, 5 runs, 5 earned, 4 walks, 5 Ks, 2.727 WHIP and 1 loss. :ss

CC will be fine with three days rest. He hasn't done it much this year and when he has he's been very effective. Last year with the Brewers he pitched on short rest almost all of september, after that stint I think a few games here and there won't be a big deal.
We'll see how Cole Hamels is today. So far he hasn't been that good this post season. Should be a good match up tonight! And off topic, Hamels did an ad which made me LoL! (NSFW)

It's the general tenor of the Phillie fan posts here, Joel. No offense, but you all seem to give the Yankees no props and no chance. It's one thing to pull for your team - it's quite another to "diss" the opposition. As for myself, I know very well that the games will be played on the field, not on this keyboard.
You want an example? Well, you attempted to dismiss C.C. on short rest with one example, yet you guys are counting on "the real Cole Hamels" to show up tonight - against one of the most successful post-season pitchers ever. Have you considered the possibility that last year's Hamels was the fluke, and the '09 version IS the real one? History is replete with young pitchers who have shown great early promise, yet quickly became so-so footnotes. Hey, I'm not saying the Phils can't win tonight, or can't win it all - I know they can. I just don't think they will. I have yet to see any Phillie fan on here be anything but certain that they will beat the Yankees, and easily. As a Yankee fan, I don't agree. As a baseball fan, I find that thinking dangerous - one dare not anger the baseball gods.

I don't want to get into a pissing match with you or anyone else. I consider you all BOTL's...key the "B". I'm truly typing each post with a smile on my face and am considering it friendly banter. The only time I don't is when someone gets overly emotional with one of my posts, which is not my intent.
...
Back on topic, I've seen a lot of examples of pitchers not performing well on 3 days. Would they have pitched better with regular rest? I don't know. Obviously, there are also plenty of examples of pitchers pitching well on three days. FWIW, I didn't "diss" CC. I said it would be interesting to see how he performs on 3-days (no diss IMO). My next post was just a retort to the praise given. For many examples I give, I am sure there are others refuting mine. No biggie.
Like I said earlier in the thread, I truly believe the best two teams in baseball are playing in the WS. It's not my intent to diss the Yankees. But if the Phillies are dissed, I will defend them if, and when merited.
If anything I have said in the thread has been "dissing" the Yankees, I apologize. I will not apologize for calling their pen "suspect" (other than Rivera obviously). It's my opinion it is and I do not consider it a diss. I will not apologize for predicting Phillies in 5. It was a prediction...admittedly bold and a better chance to be wrong than right, as any prediction of 4 or 5 games would have been with either team winning. Aside from those two things, I am not sure where it could be considered that I dissed them.
Am I certain the Phillies will win the series? Oh God no! I think I said either in another thread or another forum altogether that while I predicted Phils in 5, I could see it being anywhere from Phils in 5 to Yanks in 5. Based on the "tenor" of this thread, I can see why I didn't say that here. I did sayIf someone predicted the Yankees in 5 I wouldn't be insulted. I wouldn't be shocked by any outcome in this series.
And please don't take this the wrong way, but if you don't like my "tenor"....too bad. The "tenor" by some Yankee fans in thread has been ....entertaining.... but they are fans of them, so it's kind of expected and I actually enjoy it. Don't believe me? Reread some of the thread and try to read it from a Phillies fan's perspective. I'd truly be surprised if you didn't see it this way. Want an example? Since it doesn't bother me, I won't single anyone else out except for the accuser. :)
...Yet anyone who looks at it objectively must admit the Yankees have the edge in - well, in everything, really.
Did someone order a diss at this table? :r <--- said in jest, please don't take offense.
Now I'm going to go grab a cigar and a Scotch and wait this rain delay out. It's going to be a late night. Luckily we gain an hour tonight.
