october 19, 2009: today i went to my local tobacco shop set down, cut the head off and lit my wonderful cigar. i was enjoying myself and a gentleman walks in, purchases a pack of cigarettes, then proceeds to sit down next to me and fires one up. normally i would not be upset but for some reason today i was. is there a difference between us cigar smokers, and cigarette smokers?

i'm just curious. give some thoughts, thanks guys. :ss:wo:wo

The major difference: Cigarettes smokers are just getting their fix.

Cigar smokers are relaxing and enjoying their cigar.

Also, cigarettes smell like absolute a$$

Ok I have to say it.

Would it kill you to use a capital now and again. If your keyboard shift key is f'd up let me know I will send you a new one.

Wonder not, my furry friend. This non-sequitur has tipped his hand.

He obviously has a shift key as he used a question mark.

He's just channeling the ghost of ee cummings. :)

On an internet forum, we can't see you, can't hear you, so the way one types is a projection of the person. In addition to being hard to read, typing without capitals, with all caps and lack of some semblance of punctuation really lowers your IQ in the eyes of the viewers. Especially when first and second graders can manage with no problem. Nobody expects perfect grammar, composition and/or typing techniques - so don't look at it as a pet peeve deal - more as a common courtesy.

As a cigar enthusiast, and also an on-again off-again cigarette smoker, I have to say that the two are worlds apart for me. As stated earlier a cigar is about relaxing and enjoyment whereas as a cigarette is all about the nicotine fix for me.

There was a time, not too long ago mind you, that I smoked a pretty regular amount of either Cohiba cigarettes or Camels in addition to my weekly lineup of good cigars. I find as I get busier and busier I reach for a cigarette less often.

Currently I am not smoking cigarettes and I look as it as a good thing.

Most smell like ass, but I guarantee you. Go 4 weeks without a cigar and even a cigarette will smell like heaven :r

Don't ask how I know this...

Don't know if it has to do with being a former cigarette smoker who quit in 1988 and have not touched one since, but I don't care for cigarette smoke at all. It truly bothers me to breathe it and the smell of it also bothers me. If someone lights up a cigarette near me, I move.

In part I agree, but guess I'm F'ed then. I can't spell, can't do more than 2 finger type so y'all are just gonna be stuck with what I have to offer. As many posts as some do or that I try to do, I would never equate an individuals IQ with their typing/spelling skills or their ability to function at a social function. Profiling or stereotyping, usually not gonna work out well for ya.

When I'm smoking a cigar, the smell of a cigarette is ten times worse than when I'm not. If I have a cigar or am around cigar smoke the smell of a cigarette is like burning metal. If there are no cigars around, they (cigarettes) don't bother me. Like Dan said - cigarettes are for a fix; cigars, for many, are a hobby or indulgence.

Thank you for capitalizing in post #8. I'm with Shawn on this one. :tu

This is my opinion as well. If I'm not smoking a cigar I don't mind cigarette smoke at all. Sometimes I even like the aroma. When I'm smoking a cigar the smell seems putrid, and actually can take away from the experience slightly. :2

:tpd:

I also find that some cigarettes smell "worse" than others to me due to the different tobacco blends and, predominately, the different flavor and chemical additives used.

Clove cigarettes are the only ones that would get me to pack up and move at least 10-15 feet away. Not that they are "that bad" but just that they are so pungent that I find them distracting.

Now, some foreign cigarettes, that's a whole different story. Some of those smell just downright vile.

Just read recently that approximately 4,000 chemicals exude from a burning cigarette.

I would agree that for the average cigar smoker, it's just a hobby. But, the average cigar smoker is the guy who picks up a couple of White Owls or Dutch Masters on the way to the golf course. I think most of the members here are far from the average cigar enthusiast.
On golfwrx.com (another forum I frequent) there are many members with a full-on club building workshops. They swap out shafts and try new equipment as often as the average golfer buys a new glove. Similarly, there are members here whose collections would put many B&Ms to shame. Hell, I have cigars in my humi that my local shop has never heard of, and I've just scratched the surface of what's out there.

Yeah, I am old and feel it.
50 hurts every morning as I awake. Hurst more as they day progresses.
Moral? Don't beat up on your body when young. It does come back to haunt you!!!

By the way, I was 29 at the time I quit.
Use to do up to two packs a day.
Started as a teenager to be cool like all the other idiots like me.
Tried to quit many times over. Went a day short of a year once on a bet with a friend. Won the bet as told him it looked like I was going to make it for sure. Shook hands that bet was off to spare him owing me the $100. As I was done shaking hands, lit the cigarette in front of him.:r:r:r

While I totally understand what you mean, if you visit any office environment where smoking is not allowed, you see cigarette smokers congregating outside in designated smoking areas.
Some keep to themselves, some socialize.
Just not the same as with a cigar that takes a while to smoke.

H2O is one of the chemicals, so is CO2. 4000? Who counted?
The paper burning gets me. The smell, the burning in your eyes, the taste. Like smoldering newspaper. The flash dried tobacco is not the same as the cured tobacco in cigars either.

While these ingredients are approved as additives for foods, they were not tested by burning them, and it is the burning of many of these substances which changes their properties, often for the worse. Over 4000 chemical compounds are created by burning a cigarette, many of which are toxic and/or carcinogenic. Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanide and ammonia are all present in cigarette smoke. Forty-three known carcinogens are in mainstream smoke, sidestream smoke, or both.

I will disagree I think that tolerance breeds tolerance.

If I tolerant the cig smoke which I am not a fan of maybe next time he is out he will tolerate my cigar smoke. Or maybe when he and his friends are out the will talk to them before they ask me to stop smoking.

Two last points. A cigarette takes 2 mins easy to deal so its more likey going to take longer to deal with the smoker then the smoke.

Plus I think that the cigar, pipe, cigarette, hookah, etc. need to stick together as much as possible - with what seems like everyone against us we need all the support we can get.

And how many of those known carcinogens are also found in cigar smoke, or any smoke for that matter? Most of them.

All smoke is packed full of various compounds, some is just worse than others.

BBQed meat is loaded with known carcinogens. There are people who will only eat raw vegetables and drink purified water. They will not survive with the cockroaches when the end comes.

Not to change the subject too much but we I've wrestled with cigarette smokers vs. cigar smokers when it comes to rights. In the past, I was agitated by estblishments that allowed cigarette smoking but not cigars/pipes. This made me anti-cigarette. Now ALL smokers are getting hit by the anti-smokers. Now I feel that I have to stand up for all smokers rights in order to try to preserve mine.

:tpd: Same here. I'm an on again smoker after quitting for three years (I need to quit soon). It doesn't bother me as much as some people, but the presence of cigarette smoke tends to ruin the overall cigar smoking experience for me (or at least downgrades the enjoyment).

I can't stand the smell of cigarettes....but lighting up a cigarette near someone having a cigar is pure rudeness.:td
