Acu-Rite 00613 Digital Hygrometer
Price: $7-9 at Wal-Mart

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/519r8%2BTSAzL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

I found this hygrometer near the paints, glues, sealants, etc. I guess they vary from Wal-Mart to Wal-Mart. Just ask a clerk where the thermometers are and (if they speak English :D) they'll point you towards the right direction.

The hygrometer looks very attractive compared to the other ones you usually find at Wal-Mart for the same price. It requires a 1 AA battery (not included) to operate. It has a magnetic strip on the back of the pager-like clip to attach it to metal surfaces. It also has a pin designed to turn the clip into a stand. It has a button on the back to change the Temp reading from F to C. Do you basic salt test and you should be good to go.

After salt test (48 hours).

Verdict:

I've had it for over a year now and it's still doing good. Overall, a nice digital hygrometer for the price. + It's cheap and you can find it locally.

I have 3 of them they are wonderful for the humi or any other temp/rh area you want to monitor. One of mine is a couple of years old and still works great. They are usually pretty accurate right out of the of the box too but good idea to verify. Great Value and nice to be able to just walk in a store and buy them without waiting even if you do have to go to Walmart. Here they are on the back wall of the store in the tool section.:tu

what are the dimensions of that hygrometer?

ChasDen
10-15-2009, 11:30 PM
From web:

Displays indoor humidity and temperature
Displays Lo / OK / Hi comfort level icon
Keeps track of daily high/low temperature and humidity
Uses 1 AA (1.5V) alkaline battery (not included)
Main unit dimensions: 3" X 2 1/2" X 1 1/4" inches
Includes magnetic back for easy mounting to metal surfaces
Includes tilt stand for easy display on tables and desks

Also after you salt test it if its way off, some will be, take it back and get a new one. Explain that you tested it and it is off. If you do it within a few weeks of buying it they should exchange it. I have a bunch of them and have taken 2 back and they exchanged them no problem.

They are great looking, nice features and cheap. Mine is 3% low which I don't like though... I wish they were adjustable. I guess that's what you get for under $10 though.

A lot of times, stuff like this has a trim-pot(s) inside on the PCB that you can tweak to adjust the humidity (and/or temprature).

Now that would have been awesome, but just took one apart and showed it to the wife, a supervisor in a PCB factory and it does not have one. If it does its been potted, a glob in the middle of the board. But she thinks that may not be it either.

They were just under $8 at my Walmart about a month ago.

They will refund/exchange with no problem if you take them back in new condition and tell them they were not working properly out of the box has been my experience.

My apologies... I actually grabbed the wrong one. The one I have came with a stupid 10' probe; just something else to get in the way. I will have to go back to Wal-Mart when they get some more of the other ones in.

Just picked one up as well for 8$. Works perfectly. If you have the space in your humidor for it (about the thickness of 4 cigar hygrometers stacked on top of each other), I would definitly recommend it. Going to pick up 2/3 more for my other humidor and one to keep upstairs and one in the den.

Looks like I will be returning mine. Been in the salt chamber for 24 hours and it is reading 69. If I want a gauge that far off I will use what I have. Walmart will be getting this one back. Not sure what is wrong with these companies but if you are going to make something that measures it should be accurate. This is like buying a 12" ruler that is 5" off.

From my experience these are hit and miss..I've had about 5 and none have been less than about 6% variance. Eventually settling on a 10% and 6% variance and returning/exchanging the others.

Aside from the variance issue they do seem to hold pretty steady and are quite accurate (meaning after adjusting for the variance both hygros read the same RH).

I've learned(reluctantly) to just trust my beads and how the cigars are smoking to be the best determinate for RH.:2

Grabbed two of these today to toss into my new frigidor. Currently they've only been salt testing for a couple hours, so they're not reading 75% yet. They are, however, both reading the same humidity, which seems like a good sign--I would think that if one or both were off, they wouldn't likely be off by the same amount.

I'm happy with my two adjustable digitals, but for the price these look decent. It seems getting one that is accurate is a crap shoot however, and see no point in saving 10 bucks on something that is measuring the humidification of cigars worth 100 times that. Furthermore, I don't support Wally World or BP Gas...........end rant

I really like the HygroSet hygrometers**. They are +/- 2% on RH -- which is pretty darn good (many more expensive meters are +/- 3%) -- and they are adjustable. Yes they are twice the price of the Wal-Mart Acu-Rite's but I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for....

The thing people tend to forget about with hygrometers is that you need to change the batteries at least every 6 months, otherwise they become less accurate...

** this has nothng to do with the fact that I sell them... I chose to sell them because they are accurate and I sell them as cheaply as I can so that people buying beads can pick up a reliable but (relatively) inexpensive hygrometer

Blak Smyth

It would appear that Acu-Rite has changed their design?
I can't find anything on Acu-Rites website stating it changed, they still have the same picture. Might want to grab them up if you can find them, unless the second image is the old vesion and my Walmart just hasn't sold them yet.

When I went to Wal-Mart this weekend I found one of this model:
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/519r8%2BTSAzL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

And 3 of this model on the same hook for the same price. The problem is that it is about 2 times thicker than the first one
so it would not fit nicely into a small humi:

I'd avoid that one. A number of years ago, they used to be ok, maybe off by a few points, but at least they were consistent. Now, very unreliable. Most likely a parts change. Last ones I tried wouldn't read above somewhere in the high-50's.

Just an FYI ... There is a new model being sold at Walmart that seems to work just as good but it is bigger then this model.

The back is a lot deeper and is rounded off.

Some may have this old square thinner model but it seems most have the new deeper and fatter model in stock.

Just wanted to let you all know of this change that I see in size from the one pictured above

Still $7.99 though

I have one of these, and while it works just fine, I have to subtract seven from it every time.

I have tested 3 of them.
Two where 4 off and the third was dead on.

When I first tested one it said it was 7 off, but it didn't make sense when I had it in with another one. I pulled the batteries and tested it again and it has been 4 off since.

I have a pair of them and they're off a collective 16 points. I threw one away that was off 13 points. The cool thing about them is that they changed every time I tested them. I just saw them the other night in the bottom of a box. That's where they've lived for a long time now.
I figure if I'm gonna spend thousands on the best cigars I can find, I can spill the extra 15 bucks for a good, calibratable hygrometer/thermometer.
Notice that I tried to cheap out three times before I learned my lesson. :D

Still at 61, I think I may just return it and fork out a few extra bucks for the same kind in my humi. Humi-Care!

Being able to calibrate is a nice feature, but these are so cheap to be tempting if you can find one that is close.

I just write the +/- on it with a pen or a piece of tape :tu

Mine is now at 64.. Not sure how long I should wait. I know normally you do it for 24 hours. I seen someone said they left it for 48.. Maybe I will give it till saturday.. See by then.

I would recomend removing the batteries, put them back in and put it back in the container for 24 hours.
