I have been purging more and more. I love the clean taste I get right after a purge for the first few drags. Using the robusto as the measuring stick, how often do you purge during a smoke?

3-4 times for me per cigar sounds about right. Once right after lighting, the rest as needed.

Some cigars only a couple of times but most I'll purge every other or every third draw. Habit more than anything I suppose.

Just depends on the taste of the cigar. Sometime once or twice but for a really bitter or acrid cigar maybe more.

3-4 times usually at 1 1/2"-2" and at 3 1/2"

I'd say 1-2 times on average, normally around midway through the cigar.

I said 7 or more. Sometimes is is not needed but I find it helpful to do many smaller purges rather than one large one. Mostly toward the end of the smoke not so much teh first half.

never if i can help it. i have had to do it a few time on some cigars. Such as the other night i had a PdP from the sale that was just not wanting to play ball. I tryed to work with it before i gave up on it. I had to trash it

Never plan on it unless it gets sour or some tar build up. :tu

Purging is blowing the stale smoke out through the cigar rather then drawing it in. Sometimes it can fix a bitter cigar.

As for me, I only do it if I have a bitter cigar, which hopefully is never. But it happens sometimes.

I voted Never. I'll normally only purge if I start getting a bitter taste, or I need to touch up the burn.

Very rarely do I purge any cigar that I smoke

Completely depends on the cigar....on many, I don't purge at all, and on some I may purge several times. I let the flavor of the cigar dictate any purging.

Thanks.
Interesting.
Not something I would have ever thought of.
Gotta give it a shot sometime.

I will only purge a stick if it tastes horrible. Even then it's only to see how long I can keep a huge flame flying from the foot. Then i toss it.

Depends on the cigar. Sometimes never, sometimes lots.

Whenever I find the taste getting 'meh'. 4-5 times maybe.

IMO cigars are for smoking not blowing so I picked never... I may purge once every 20 cigars if there is a problem...

Usually never and I feel that in the event that a cigar needs to be purged more than once or twice, it probably isn't worth smoking.

I only purge if i have to. It totally depends on the cigar...sometimes once, sometimes never, sometimes 3 or 4 times.

:tpd: I think it can become a habit and, for the most part, not needed. It was that way for me for a while until I realized what I was doing. The only time I do it anymore is when the cigar goes completely out.

Same here and if the build up gets bad enough, I just clip it again.

Purging isn't necessary for me the great majority of the time.If I feel like a cigar needs purging, chances are it is nearly time to put it out. I smoke slowly, this helps my smokes stay pleasant and prevents them from getting bitter.

Can it hurt to purge? I have gotton so I do it a few times on most cigars thinking, how can it hurt?

Purging gives me a head rush and shakes. Plus I'm paranoid about my cigars getting hot.

I'm working on perfecting the nose exhale, maybe I'll work on the purge next.

I've pretty much stopped purging. Still do on occasion but I've gotten to the point where if she starts to get bitter on me I just toss her. I'm usually 'bout done at that point anyway.

Nah can't hurt at all, I reckon. I just saw it becoming a habit with me when it was not actually needed.

Extremely rarely, close to never. The only times I actually even remember purging are when the cigar goes out while I'm eating or going to the bathroom so I can start smoking it again.

At least 2x a smoke, because if it's a great smoke I get a bit overzealous.

Usually not at all, but if it starts to get rough, I generally agree with T.G.'s idea on the matter.

I am in the never to very rarely category. If I come back to a smoke that I have let sit for a few minutes I will purge, other than that I usually have no need.

It depends on the cigar. Sometimes I never purge. Sometimes I do after several puffs or touch-ups when I'm trying to get more flavor out of the cigar.

Mr Edmundo

I would say that I purge only about 25% of the cigars I smoke. Most don't need to. And if they do, it's almost always when it's near the end. I'll do it most often on a cigar that I've been really enjoying and am getting down to the nub. I can still get a few more great puffs in before I let it die.
If I'm purging a cigar in the middle or earlier, my next move is usually to toss it.

Interesting thread. I only purge when I have to put the cigar out.
