View Full Version : ion breeze / air purifier
Any body use one of these devices. I'm looking for something to put in the garage to suck up some of the smoke...so in the winter I can smoke with the door shut! To cold in there for it to be open even with the heater cranked.
A smoke eater is outta the question...the wife will never go for it...at least not this close to xmas and both my kids bdays...just a broke white man here.
So if anyone has had any exp. With the ionic breeze and thinks this may be an answer...please fill me in
Thx

If you mean the Ionic Breeze that is or was sold by Sharper Image, they don't move enough air to be effective. A ventilation fan is the way to go. It's more expensive, but also look into a heat recovery ventilator, which recovers the heat rather than throwing it outside.

Correct. The Ionic Breeze is an air cleaner, not a smoke remover. You could always close the garage door onto a window fan. That would suck out most of the smoke. You would then need some sort of space heater.
yes. i have a few heaters..i normally smoke in the shed in the winter..but its too full this year , the shed was cool but all the smoke was trapped in and i felt like i was dead when i got out..
if i tried to blow the smoke out all the heat went with it...
will check out something for heat recovery...theres no way to put a window in my garage...the way its build is not fit for it unless i wanna spend more than i have

If you have windows in your garage what about getting one of these to blow out of your garage?
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/183-3783576-6776055?ASIN=B000FIIXLA&AFID=Froogle&LNM=B000FIIXLA|Honeywell_Twin_Window_Fan_White_HW6 28&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=B000FIIXLA&ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001
It would create enough air flow to pull the smoke I think and keep the heat near your.

No major expense necessary. Just a fan, some wiring, a bit of flex tubing, a 3" hole saw and an exterior self closing vent fitting. Less than $50 worth of parts and an hour or two worth of install time.
It'll clear the smoke, but won't be powerfull enough to pull all of your heated air out.
The ion breeze is a great unit but it takes a few days for the unit to remove all traces of cigar smoke. We have one in almost every room of the house running 24/7.
I should mention they need to be cleaned on a daily basis depending on how hard you make the unit work.
i dont really care about the smell ...its just the actuall smoke i want to clear out at the time of smoking..so im not sitting in a cloud!! lol

Then the Ion Breeze is not the unit you want. Shop Vac might work LOL :ss

Not talking about putting a window in your garage. Buy a dual-fan window unit (less than $50), put it where the garage door comes down. Pull garage door down on top of fan unit. You could put some boxes or get some foam insulation for the gaps between the fan and the sides of the garage.

This looks like it would be a good solution for you but they run $400.00 - $500.00

I have a couple of Ionic Breeze air purifiers that I use, I have the small desktop models. I leave it running and if I smoke in the garage at night you can't tell it the next morning.

Do those things actually work?
Over the years, I've seen more supposed "smoke removal machines", be it filters or electrostatic cleaners than I can recall, all of which make all kinds of similiar claims, but only about one or two out of every ten seems to work at all, and never as well as claimed.:2

A couple of the B&M's here have them. If you've got you and a couple buddies around then they work pretty well. One of the smaller B&M's here has events at times and he has 15-20 people in there and all it does is keep the smoke moving in a nice circle. :ss

Try this Red. I had one of these I bought 10 years ago and it works great. Bought another one of these 2 years ago and left it in San Diego and it is the same type of purifier and I was able to smoke in the condo and this machine took care of the smoke and any odor.

He's on the right track with that one, that's basically exactly what you need. Mom's had a few "Alpine" air purifiers kicking around the house for years since a brief stint trying to sell them. Crap company (MLM), BUT AWESOME product. It's basically the same thing, and I honestly don't think there's much of a difference other than the price :).
To clean out the smoke cloud, you need IONS (you can literally watch it cut a swath through the smoke in front of it). Ozone can be used to eliminate the odor, but its a gradual thing. If you want it to work faster, you can turn it up and leave the room. Its the exact same stuff that a lightning storm generates, and is one of the reasons the air smells to "clean" afterwards... but in high doses its not so good for ya, so just step out of the room if your gonna turn it up.
(and when you get tired of odor anywhere else in your life, just plug that machine in. Friend was recently selling his car, but couldnt get a VERY entrenched dog smell out of it. 36 hours with the windows up and that machine plugged in and the car smelled like it came from a dealer)
That machine on ebay seems to have it all, and for a damned cheap price if it works as good as the $400-$700 units I've used. Go for it, there is NO better solution.

It should be noted that an ionizer this strong isn't meant for using while you're in the roo.

Took a look at those, nice quality, for an ozone generator, those sure do look nicer than some of the other junk I've seen... But a question, does you unit do ION also, or only ozone? For odor control, you'd want the ozone (saved my ass on more than on occasion!), but I'd guess if your primary goal is just gettin it out of the air quick, you'd want a unit that adds ION as well, even if the ozone is a bit weaker and lower grade.:2
It should be noted that an ionizer this strong isn't meant for using while you're in the roo.
pretty sure if I'm reading that right, there is no ionizer at all in those units. But yeah, you are absolutely right, if you crank the ozone, you won't want to be there. Don't worry, your body will tell you, you'll get a mild headache, then you know to leave or turn it down, haha.

Nah, just a headache. Its safe to use em on low 24/7 in your house to control odor with ozone. Turn em up if you have a bigger job (but leave the area). Kinda cool actually, you can hold a rag soaked in windex or amonia in front of it for 10-30 seconds and then smell the rag - nothing but water left!
Make sure it's got an activated ionizer or it wont cut the actual smoke out of the air. be careful of the word "ion", the $30 sharper image ones say "ion" too, and well, NO. haha.

All...I've been using this machine at varied levels while in the room, out of the room and anything in between. The output is variable. If I have company or smoke two cigars in an evening instead of my typical one...I'll set the unit on a low level output and let it run overnight for 6-8 hours while I sleep. I don't mean to come across as an ass...but all the articles and manufacturer mumble jumble doesn't equate to personal experience. The unit I'm using works so well...that one of the local B&M's bought the same one after trying mine for one night. Though I personally would have recommended something with higher output for the store. The key is Variable Output. You can even rent it to neighbors to eliminate odor problems they may have. Detail shops typically charge an average of $40 to ozone your car.

I'll throw one last tidbit of info in before shutting up :)
you can REMOVE the ozone "plate" from one of those machines, and then it will only produce the ions and run the air through the physical filter.
(Ozone is generated with a plate that basically arcs electricity from one side to the other - take it out, nothing gets made)

Exactly.
The ions will make the smoke drop out of the air to the floor. It will still smell of smoke, its just "moving" it to the floor and any other surface nearby.
Bear in mind its not a miracle worker, it should, depending on how things are setup, keep the smoke at a reasonable level (keep it from getting overbearing). It's not like you are going to flick a switch and suddenly be "in the clear"... that would require a few thousand bucks on a commercial air handling unit. But for a couple hundred, it should get the job done and will save you the hassle of changing filters. I've used them in the past for just that purpose.
I'll add a slight individual results may vary disclaimer that there are A LOT of different options at there, as you have seen. The particular machine I had did the trick. They are all, more or less, the same thing... so theoretical they ALL should "do the trick"... but *shrug* there's always that element of unknown :)
Exactly.

They're ozone generators. Not ionizers. I had originally looked at getting an ionizer back in Dec of last year. As I looked for more and more info to be sure that I got the biggest bang for buck...and didn't have to worry about buyers remorse, I ended up on the Odor Free and Air-Zone (http://www.air-zone.com/) sites. I finally decided on the Odor Free unit based on cost and reliability. That also included cost of replacement plates and or filters.
Here's a link to a section of the Air-Zone site about Why Ionizers Don't Work (http://www.air-zone.com/ionsvsozone.html). I ended up buying the Overnight model from Odor Free which is what they now call the Villa. They give you a 30 day trial with the units, so you can see for yourself what it's capable of. From all of the reading and questions asked over the phone, I was led to believe that it would require a unit with an output of about 800 Mg/Hr to eliminate the smell of cigar smoke. That's why I went with the 1000 Mg/Hr Overnight (Villa). I rarely use the unit at anymore than half that output. It all depends on how much time you have to clear the odors. 45 minutes at full power or several hours at 1/3-1/2 power.
I can honestly say that this has without a doubt turned out to be one of the better purchase decisions made I've in the last year or so. I use this thing everywhere in my apartment. If you've got dingy smelling clothes...stick them in a closet with the ozone generator on a high setting for 30 minutes. Everything in the closet will come out smelling like they just came out of the laundry...seriously! Did you make a stupid mistake and put a half smoked cigar in your travel humi? Empty the humi and point the ozone generator at it and the foam for a half hour...it'll smell like it did when you got it new. I have no experience doing this with wooden humidors. But if you put a half smoked stick in your wooden humidor...maybe you deserve to have to buy a new humi so you don't make a mistake like that again...lol

purifan will clean (filter) smelly air, but will do nothing about anything that gets away onto the surfaces in your house. Have to change/wash filters.
ionizer will take particles out of the air and bond them to other surfaces (surfaces get dirtier quicker, still stinks)
ozone will chemically alter whatever it comes into contact with, killing bacteria and neutralizing odors. It will not take smoke out of the air, only make it less stinky :p.

I don't care what anyone tells you but filtration and/or ionizers don't work. I've tried almost everything except exhaust, which IMO would be the most logical solution, if feasible. Ozone is the only other thing that is partially effective for long term, consisting smoking environments. It's the cumulative effect of smoke buildup that is the problem. Filtration can never get all of the smoke. Incense and other scents mask the odor but don't eliminate them. Sure, if you smoke once a week, only in the winter, then filters will work. So will candles. So will chanting voodoo.

Besides, I'm talking about smoking in my garage, and the furnace doesn't heat that space so well.

Then, I'll return to my original suggestion of a heat recovery ventilator which adds air changes with outside but saves the heat. After that, add whatever additional heat with a gas or electric space heater.

That machine on ebay seems to have it all, and for a damned cheap price if it works as good as the $400-$700 units I've used and check review (https://bestsyntheticoil.co/how-do-i-choose-the-right-oil-viscosity-dispersants-anti-wear-agents-antioxidants/). Go for it, there is NO better solution.
its best
