View Full Version : My worst cigar..so far.
One of the absolute worst "premium" cigars I believe I have ever smoked was an Onyx Reserve Mini Belicoso. I know the cigars were stored properly, as I was the one to open the box to put them on display. I thought "what the hell" it's a maduro, and I love maduros.... Boy was I in for one hell of a shock, the wrapper was dark and didn't have too many veins. It did have some tooth to it. Pre light draw was ok, not outstanding, a pronounced sweetness maybe a little floral note too.
The cigar just didn't taste right from the beginning, the cigar tasted almost as if someone grabbed a handful of hay and rolled it into a maduro wrapper I could almost taste a hint of burning plastic also. the draw wasn't extremely easy but it was tough to get a decent amount of smoke. I fought with the first inch or so of the cigar, no leather taste, no cocoa, no coffee. just the taste of acrid smoke. needless to say the cigar ended up on my lawn and was mulched by my lawnmower a few days later. I can liken the taste of that cigar to what a car fire smells like... terrible.
I haven't since picked up an onyx cigar, but I might have to give it a go just to see if the first was a fluke.

I've only smoked 1 onyx and it was enough for me. Maduros are my favorite, but like you said, tasted like burning plastic or something of the sort, I made it 3/4 of the way through and gave up.

:tpd: An Onyx Reserve was actually the first premium cigar I smoked. I've smoked a few more since then and enjoyed them all.

I haven't had one in a few years, but I remember liking them. I do have one in my humi, so I'll have to burn it to see if it's any good.

You are not alone with the burning plastic taste. I've tried two...both not finished. Not for me. Way too many other sticks out there. :pu

Your description matches my memory of this cigar (had one on Christmas Break 2008) quite well.
There are many more fish in the sea. The cigar sounds so bad, why bother wasting precious life-minutes on another one.

I had one the other day and it was very good. In fact I was thinking about picking up a couple more of them.

I think the brand is suffering inconsistency. I liked them a lot and went through boxes of them in '03 and then had some in '05 that weren't worth taking out of the cello.
Even so - you will likely have far worse cigars... Cremosa and Guantanamera come to mind..

I have a friend who thinks that these are the greatest cigars in the world, and to him they are. I love that there are so many different tastes and the cigars made to satisfy them. I personally don't hate them, but I wouldn't buy then either.
I don't intend to threadjack, but it would be interesting to also add what each poster thought the worst highly-touted cigar was for them.
For me it was the Vegas Cubanas by Pepin. I probably just got a bad stick, but I gagged several times, it smelled horrible, and it unraveled before halfway through.

:tpd: And as for your bad experience with one Onyx, I'd only quote the wisest words I've ever heard on this topic
The worst cigar you ever smoked may be sitting in the same box right beside the best cigar you ever smoked.
I'm not saying you are wrong about Onyx - I'm just saying don't condemn a whole line due to one bad experience. And if you want some REALLY bad cigars, PM me your snaily. :r

I bought a box of them over a year ago. Most have been fine, but the odd one was harsh and some had burn issues. However, after 7 or 8 months on them, they improved immensly. I'm really enjoying how they are smoking now with over a year's age on them.
Based on your descriptions, I would assume you just got a bad stick. I never tasted anything remotely resembling plastic.:2

First one I smoked sucked. All of the ones I've smoked since have been great!
For the price, these are good, imho.
I had a Gurkha Master’s Select Perfecto #3 (4.0" x 54) last Sat. and it damn near made me :pu
Hey Nick, I have more just for you....:r

My friend, you need a Petrus Reposado.
That will make your onyx look like a Parti Lusitania.

When it comes down to the old cello on/off argument, 100% of us agree that cigars taste and smoke better when removed from their cello.

Any Hawaiian Macadamia Nut cigar in a tube. Trust me, don't go there even if the person who is loaning you his house insists on sharing one of these gems. We both nearly puked after 2 puffs.
