This article is from CigarCyclopedia.com (http://www.cigarcyclopedia.com/webapp/content/view/1540/27/)

Los Angeles, September 15, 2009 – Halloween isn’t far off, so that means Pete Johnson’s annual “Monster” series is getting ready to debut for 2009.

After inaugurating the series with “The Frank,” in honor of the Frankenstein movie series of the 1930s and 1940s, the 2009 edition will be led by “The Drac,” saluting Universal Studios’ movie series of the 1930s that starred Bela Lugosi – a big cigar smoker, by the way – in the title role.

“‘The Drac’ will be a 6 3/4-inch by 52-ring torpedo,” said Johnson. “It’s a long torpedo, with a very easy, elegant internal blend and a very big flavored Habano Maduro wrapper. It’s kind of like dressing an elegant man in his black cape!”

The Drac’s wrapper was grown in Ecuador, with the binder and filler leaves from Nicaragua. The cigars were made at Pepin Garcia’s My Father cigar factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. “The cigars will be in boxes of 13,” Johnson added. “The boxes are still in the coffin shape, but this will be a prettier coffin than for The Frank last year. It’s shiny and there’s a little touch of (fake) blood on the tooth coming out of the ‘D’.”

As always, this is a very limited-production cigar, with only 1,300 boxes of 13 actually produced (16,900 cigars in total). “We picked out 13 retailers who got the product last year. We’ll pick again and those 13 will get a bigger chunk, but the remaining distribution will be through the territories, so most [of our] stores will be get a piece of it,” Johnson noted.

In order to give more of his retailers nationwide a chance to participate in his Halloween limited-edition program, Johnson is also started his “sub-series” of the Monster program, called the “Actor’s Series.” These cigars will be themed around the actors whose portrayals made their monster pictures so memorable.

As the 2008 series featured “The Frank,” the 2009 Actor’s Series entry will be “Boris” in honor of Boris Karloff, who brought Frankenstein’s monster to life in 1932. “It’s in boxes of 10, with only 1,000 boxes to be produced. The boxes are white with a very elegant white band on the cigars,” said Johnson.

“It allows you to taste a version of the previous year’s Monster blend, but it’s not the exact blend. We’ve shortened the cigar – it’s 7 inches by 49 ring – and instead of Broadleaf, we put an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper with a rosado tone to it. It changes the cigar drastically, but it’s also made at My Father cigars in Nicaragua. Retailers who won the pick last year will get a nice little chunk of the sub-series and everybody else will be able to get some.”

Johnson isn’t finished, however. He’s also giving away a motorcycle as part of this year’s Halloween promotion. “We came up with this last year,” Johnson noted. “It’s a Ducati Monster (696) and we’re going Willy Wonka to select the winner.

“There are 13 spooky tickets inside boxes of The Drac. There’s no purchase necessary, but if you find one of the 13 tickets and register it online, you have a 1-13 chance to win the bike. We know a lot of these cigars are given as gifts and retailers will open a lot of boxes before they put the cigars on the shelf and we’re fine that they are eligible to win as well.”

He’s already thinking ahead to next year as well. “In 2010, we’re going new school with LeatherFace, it will be called ‘The Face.’ The size has not yet been determined, but it’s going to be a fatter cigar, with a gnarly, ugly wrapper on it, a marbelized cover leaf. The cigar will be unfinished, with the wrapper drooping off the cigar.

“The box will be a coffin, but ugly and brown. We’re going to have the boxmaker swipe them over the grinder one more time after they’re finished. The band will be some weird combination of the colors, too.” He hasn’t yet figured out how to package a miniature chain saw in the box to use as a cutter!

Johnson has also planned ahead for the Actor’s Series cigar for 2010: “It will be the Bela sub-series. We’ve already kind-of created that cigar. It will have a classic, elegant Ecuador Connecticut wrapper.”

Johnson’s success began with his Tatuaje brand and now has distribution all over the country, reaching about 700 stores in total. “I’m glad it’s still small,” he added.

He also noted the success of his newest blend, the Ambos Mundos. “It’s aimed at a lower price point,” he explained. “It’s my way of trying to create something that had flavor at a nicer price point for this economy. It’s been out since January and the response has been great.

“It’s a base Nicaraguan, with mild seco-viso-volado leaves and two different wrappers: Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper on one, and a Nicaraguan Habano on the other.”

He also noted that the LaRiqueza and La Riqueza Cabinet lines “are the same blend, only the box is different. We added two sizes in the Cabinet and those are round not square.

“We’re making everything out of My Father cigars in Nicaragua now except for the Tatuaje (brown label) which is still in Miami at El Rey de Los Habanos.”

Johnson’s emphasis on quality and control has made his cigars widely known and much appreciated among the cigar cognoscenti, but he’s not above having some fun with his retailers and with smokers. For an activity which is essentially a hobby, that’s a good thing.

Yes. All the Halloween releases will be boxes of 13. Frankly, the Frank did nothing for me. (pun intended) I hope the Drac is better.

They made double of the Drac than the Frank (1660 boxes) so what I have heard is the 13 stores that got the Frank last year will have the most boxes and the rest will be distributed to other stores across the country. So these should be easier to get.

I believe last year it may have been two weeks before Halloween, it wasn't any earlier than that though.

Pete posted it on the Tatuaje Nation (http://tatuajecigars.com/)website.

They always sell the good stuff by single sticks which really makes me mad (plus they say only x per person), but they are the only place even close to me that has the selection they do so I kinda gotta go there...

Ah Pete Johnson is killing me with these limited releases! I still gotta get my hands on the T110, Frank, Black and definatly gonna get as many Dracs as I can... if I can

Guys settle down. The other board I am on is Tat crazy.

Do the math. The primary stores are getting 403. There are still over 800!!!!! Drac boxes at other shops The you have 1000!!! Boris boxes as well. There will be sticks out there. I can see many shops on the lists getting 5+ boxes.

They are gonna be out there. you will just need to do the work.
Grants in SF is not taking preorders walk in only. Looks like I may drive up to the city on the 31st and grab a box or 2. May have to get the CC out of the freezer. :( Its been in their 8 months now.

One thing that everybody is overlooking, according to a few shops I called: No one is asking for the Boris!!! One shop that I snagged a box from said that they have a list of 85 names for the Drac and 4 names for the Boris, lol. Call and ask for the Boris, there's a much better chance, and you're pretty much smoking last years Monster (that didn't come out right).

Retailers were announced Oct 13th, so people are calling to reserve boxes. Boxes and singles technically are not supposed to be sold until Halloween day, even though retailers will recieve everything earlier than that.

Guess I read guitarmans post wrong. I read they were not supposed to be out till halloween and know everyone has already called the 13. Just read it wrong.

As I pointed out on Page 3 the unlucky 13 are only getting 403 boxes there are something like 800 other boxes out there and the 1000 borris. I have a feeling many will be getting some dracs. Maybe not boxes, but sticks will be out there.

Grants in frisco is not doing a list I may do the roady to try to get a box.

Uh Huy the Boris is not released yet so I am pretty sure they will have them as its comming out on the same day as the Drac. As to the Shop its Mission Pipe in San Jose. I have spoken with them. They are going to sell these the same as the OPUSX and everything else special they get. Basically Shop Regulars and walkins first as the boxes will be on the counter. After a few days if they dont all move then they will begin contacting all the out of area people who are on some list. This is from one of the shops employee I have dealt with many times. He laughed at the length of the list of out of area people. They will have both Dracs and Boris on the counter when they open for business on the 31st. People walking in will be able to buy. They are unsure if they will sell boxes. I bet this depends on how many boxes and the demand. Mission always takes care of its Regualrs and Locals over everyone else.

As to Grants screw it. I guess they changed their mind. Who cares I will be at mission on Sat morning to pick some up. Its 10 minutes from my house. I am definetly not driving up to grants for some random raffle. Besides West Coast may also get some. So hopefully I can grab a single or two there.

As I said on page 3 there will be 800 boxes at the other shops on the list. Will they have 31 boxes? No, but they will have multiple boxes. Based on Missions pull I am guessing they will be getting a good number of boxes. To be honest I am actually almost wanting to not buy this stick because of the trainwreck its causing. Even I called a shop. :td

So yeah long story short I am pretty sure I will have a few Borris and Drac in my hands on saturday afternoon which is all I can afford anyway. So I am good :tu

That was such a nice long letter Mike...

The reason why I said good luck with the Boris because my friends shop sold all the Dracs and Boris that he has already. So I just assumed most stores knew how much they were getting in and assumed that they were pretty much sold out as well.

Did you try Mission in Pleasanton? I am 6th on their list so hopefully I can get my hands on a box. If Grant's is really doing a raffle then that is pointless driving 2 hours for me.

All this hunting for cigars is putting a bad taste in my mouth to be honest. Oh well.

I didnt call mission in pleasanton as I would not drive up there. I know Dona likely runs her shops the same, so I am sure the distribution will be the same. regulars and locals first. Everyone else gets the scraps. The down side is she always sells to her regulars after closing the night before. In other words if you spend cash there she hooks you up first then others. That said, like I already stated I spoke to one of the guys there. There will be Boris and Drac on the counter for sale when they open up.

On a side note. Pete posted this on another board I am a member of.
He is somewhat active on this other board.

After a small amount of negative feedback and customers asking for more boxes that I don't have, I had some thoughts and ideas about the Monster program. I would love feedback on what I think might be the only fair way.

Next year all the Coffin Shaped numbered special boxes of 13 will be reduced back to 666 boxes and distributed by Gloucester Street since they are the birthplace of the series. They will set a box limit per customer, first come first serve, phone orders, walk ins, etc. These will go on sale on October 13th.

I will make an additonal 31000 cigars packed in plain boxes of 10 that will sell to all and any regular loyal current Tatuaje stores. They can order whatever they want for their customers and the product will be delivered after November 1st to the retailers. The cigars will be the exact same shape, flavor and price but with a generic Tatuaje Band and maybe a secondary band saying the initials of the actor who played the current years Monster. This would be considered the Monster out of Costume.

This is the only way I think might work to give everyone a chance to buy and smoke the cigars but the collectors can choose to buy them early for the funky numbered box.

Love any comments on this.

Pete

The response to this was not so positive so it does not look like this will actually happen. Someone then recommended something like the Having CRA run the sale and the boxes shipped to your local Tatuaje retailer. So basically guys the sale of the monster series may change next year. Its all up in the air. If anyone wants to know the board this discussion is going on at send me a PM. I dont want to post the board as it may violate our forum rules.

Pete is a marketing genius. He's already hyping what he may or may not do next year.

Pete could make as many of these as he wanted. But then we wouldn't be worked up in a lather about them, would we?

That said I really did like the T110 and I am glad I have a few left. Some of his special stuff is good if its your flavor. The T110 is also very different from his usual stuff but similar to the El Cohete. Guess there is only so many ways to skin a cat. :r

See I guess because I know some of the guys who work at shops and have talked to them I have a different take. I call some of them friends and talk to them outside of the shop. I am guessing what happened is a lot of the locals of these shops said "HEY WTF? I come in here and spend my money every day and you sell these sticks to non locals? Maybe I should support other people instead of you." End of the day local shops live and die by walk in customers, not by people on the other side of the country who only call because they want the special sticks. When these are gone all these guys on wait lists will never buy another stick or not enough to make it worth them screwing there locals who keep their doors open.

I was shocked these local shops were doing lists and screwing their locals. I actually think these shops made a smart business decision by taking care of their loyal and local customers over other persons. It is fair in my book. Its fair to the local customers who keep the shops doors open and buy Petes product throught the year. The reason why they are getting the sticks in the first place. So I think what the shops are doing now is much more fair to their actual true patrons then what was occurring before. Thats why I think Dona at Mission while a pain sometimes is smart. Who does she take care of first? The people that keep her doors open every day. After the people that actually keep her in business are helped then she helps others.

Sorry to disagree but the shops made the smart business decision and are treating their true customers fair in my book

Agreed. I know that if the B&M that I support sold a limited distribution of sought-after sticks to non-locals I would be less likely to buy from them. My state doesn't have the highest tax rate, but it's enough that mail order via Famous or CI is always more economical than buying at the B&M. Even so, I continue to support my local cigar shop. That loyalty should go both ways.

I agree that the retailers should not have changed horses midstream. They should have had a bit more forethought and should not have started taking reservations before offering their regulars an opportunity.

That scavenger hunt idea was a complete dissapointment. I live in Columbus Ohio and when i saw the lucky 13 list i got VERY excited to know that NHC would have them. I surely thought i could procure a box by going down and reserving a box.... Wow, was i wrong. In a nutsehell, they single-handedly ruined the ability to appeal to a local market and gain appreciation from people that live in and around Columbus. Instead they chose to try and build up their PR and visibility by selling them to anyone in the US who would sift through their site..... If you ask me, that kills the "special" factor.

Thanks for nothing. F minus!

Thats why I say shops should have sold to locals. NHC though does a fair amount of online sales though which is why they were willing to do it that way. Most B&Ms are taking care of their locals.

The issue for us out here in Cali is while some local shops will have them. We get raped on taxes so ours will be more expensive then likely anywhere else in the country. I have heard anywhere from 16-18+ a stick. Although it appears the person selling at 18+ is fisting his customers possibly. This number has not been officially confirmed though I dont believe.

if the price is higher because of taxes that is fine. If the prices are higher because of the rarity i would ABSOLUTELY report them to Tatuaje. I see it happen all the time with non authorized vendors selling Opus....

arent you who posted you already got a box by camping out on line. :r You were on your computer sat morning searching a website trying to get a box right?

Not that im trying to get a box cause Im not. Given actions it seems like funny advice. You werent very patient patient patient.

Honestly I was lucky and used my internet savvy to get a box. I was doing other stuff and I logged onto another forum about a minute after someone posted the link to where the box was. In about 5-10 minutes I had a box.

If I didn't login onto that site, I would have missed out on the whole thing. I am in a totally different boat since I already have one locked in but at the same time patience by everyone is what needs to be exercised. :2

AND by the way, Pete Johnson is taking advantage of all of this 'Limited Release' stuff... Is this stick REALLY worth 13 dollars? It better be really really good to warrant that kind of price...

+1

Pete Johnson markets great cigars, but today I vowed to no longer line his pockets through his manufactured scarcity angle. I'm sorry, but holding real cigar lovers hostage is just no way to do business IMHO. I realize I'm a newbie to the cigar world, but not to consumer rights in general.

Everyone enjoy your Pete Johnson products (and I do mean that sincerely), but I, for one, will never purchase another cigar with his name attached to it.

There's plenty of other great smokes out there that are more readily available. :2

Don't know if I'm willing to never buy another PJ product, but I am not falling for the hype. If one uses a clear head and logic, you will see that this is nothing more than a hype machine. It is pitting customers against their local B&Ms (cause they sold a box over the phone) and causing grown men to run around like little kids trying to get ahold of one of those Furbees (remember those?). That is a sad reflection on the industry.

Gents (and ladies), I will continue to enjoy fine cigars and not fall for a bunch of hype. Won't you join me in "just saying no" to hype and yes to enjoying cigars for what they are and not the hype attached to them?

Agreed James.

I rarely agree with Lew Rothman, but as far as LE stuff goes he's hit it on the head. It's only LE because the Mfg. says it is. Pete could easily roll out 250,000 more Vamps or whatever they are. But why bother if you can clear the same profit with less overhead?

Marketing works. Hype works. The B&M's have to love this stuff too!

I for one have written off PJ's stuff. I have only had two that didn't have wrapper issues. Of those two, only one was good. I've spent too much money trying to like his stuff because someone on a board somewhere said they were the second coming of Che. $13.00 per stick? That puts you into "rare air" for the "real" stuff.

Just my free opinion, and not worth the cost I'm sure.

You could compare this to the guys out there that think CC's are the next best thing since sliced bread....and you know darn good and well they are paying more than that per stick for those CC's and are lucky if 25% of what they buy is legit!

The less people buy of his product the more there is for the smoker's that enjoy them, same goses for DPG and Dion's fine cigars.

Never paid $13 for a CC, but my gripe is not with the price of the cigar. My gripe is that Pete plays on cigar smokers emotions to cause a frenzy about a product that is only limited because he says it is limited. When that causes hard feelings between B&M owners and their customers or between BOTLs, then we should ALL be angry at his marketing ploy. We have enough to deal with fighting the government (taxes & legislation) and the anti-smoking crowd. We don't need internal conflict....PERIOD.

Yup, its manufactured controlled rarity, I don't care what anyone says.... its marketing hype to stoke the fires found deep within fanboys hearts... and from the looks of the boards, its working. Don't get me wrong, I love the taste of the Noellas, but clamoring for a $13.00 cigar just seems odd.

Hey Larry,

I rather enjoy cc's, as you know. I rarely pay more than $8-10 per stick, and it has to have a darned good rep. for that price.

Could you elaborate on the 75% fake figure?

I also enjoy DPG smokes and Padron. Just have had nothing but bad luck from PJ's products (yes I know Pepin makes them). My aversion to his products is my personal experience with bad quality, unfavorable taste (for me) and relatively high price. Thelatest Vamp hype was just "another nail in the coffin" if you will... :D

I, personally, am not a fan of Pete's cigars. He and I just share a different taste. I've tried pretty much everything and haven't found a keeper yet.
So far as the hype goes, I think it's fun.
It brings a special excitement to the hobby and the industry that's much lacking. The kidsy, "Furbee" atmosphere surrounding the Dracs is supposed to be fun. I'm looking forward to trying the cigar just to see if they suck. :)
Then I can say they suck, and that'll be fun, too.
Plus if I can get a few boxes, it'll be fun sharing them here.
I suppose it's easier to be objective whenit really doesn't matter to me whether I get them or not. :)
I do think that despite the fact that the "manufactured scarcity" is real, it's intent is to make fun, not to make guys angry. If you'll take time to watch some of Pete's interviews and get a feel for the kind of guy he is, I'm sure anyone would come away with the same impression. :tu

I don't get all the animosity over the limited nature of this product. It's not a regular line and to lump all his lines together as being subject to manufactured scarcity is unfair. I find that his regular lines are readily accessible. Ultimately I think it falls on the consumer when this much hype is generated, Pete can't generate this hype all on his own. Plenty of other manufacturers release seasonal, limited edition, etc. smokes and rarely do you see this sort of reaction. I think its unfair to lay all the blame on a manufacturer who chooses to release a limited production smoke.

I have to agree with these two posts...

How come no one *****es about the Liberty series, or the Master Blends? With every hobby you have a group of people that not only enjoy the activity but also enjoy collecting things that few others have.

Not to mention it's not really that hard to score a box. Come on if a newb like me can score a box it can't be that hard.

I saw grown men on another site act like the world was coming to an end because they could not get a box of "Dracs". Most probably never smoked one and were willings to buy them site or scent unseen. To me that is a hype that was genius on the part of Pete. I myself think that his products are over priced for the hit or miss quality.

I don't know, I don't think its animosity at all, just a civil disagreement with how "limited" these are marketed. I share the same feeling toward most anything "limited" in the cigar world, especially Opus X. More for you guys for sure, and as always smoke what you like and like what you smoke.

Just a note: Call around to many o the "other listed" retailers. I think most know what they will be getting now, and some of these places are really small, mall stop type of places, and have not been bombarded by phone calls yet. I know most Botls here know who is an authorized HSA distributor and they use them. These same vendors are used by botls in europe that I know. Now maybe if they are buying them from a local guy then they are geting hosed, but thats not who were are talking about I dont think.

A 13 CC is a rare stick. Most are less then that, many good standards are half that price and you are not paying taxes on them. For me these are 20.00 sticks and at that price we are talking RA Estupendos and other rare items.

Dont know I cant give much help here

Good stick + excellent marketing and working on supply vs. demand.. That bout sums it up.. I've had the blacks and the franks, and given the amount of effort required to get dracs, it's a stick I'd like to try, but I basically called half the 13 retailers and either got:

-gotta buy X amount to buy dracs
-lottery
-scavenger hunt (my second favorite)
-personal fav: "Become a fan" on facebook and there will be a lottery after our top customers get first dibs.. SWEET!

So yeah, after that I went and bought something else

Pete has always said that he's fine with a B&M winning a ticket ... it's unavoidable, as many are opening all their boxes to sell as singles or (ggggggrrr.....) put them in over-priced samplers@!

I'm suprised at how many B&Ms are getting away with charging so much MORE than MSRP for these. My buddy just got a box of Dracs at $19.95/stick and Boris at $18.50/stick. Tax was added AFTER that! That's just wrong, and I hope Pete doesn't ship those guys Monsters in the future!

Just an FYI because I know alot of folks are getting irritated with the "unlucky 13" retailers. The Regency Cigar Emporium in RI does have a list and I am confirmed on the list. I asked why people who were calling in had to order a box of other Tat's before being able to purchase a box of Dracs or Boris. He is a businessman and business has been bad for a lot of folks. You can't blame him for trying to increase sales on an already hyped product. Existing customers, customers that have purchased from him before, are not required to buy a box of something else before buying the box of Dracs or Boris.

I am not a spokesman for Regency, only a customer of several years.

I will be purchasing a box of Dracs and hopefully can land my hands on a box of Boris as well. I am giving 5 Dracs to Walter (Klipsch) and keeping 5 for myself. The last 3 will go to some folks here (Andrew already has dibbs on one). Not sure what I am going to do with the Boris until I know I can get them. I also received a flyer from Regency in the mail saying they will be giving free Tat Blacks with box purchases, not sure if thats in-store only or for the mail-outs too. I thought these weren't supposed to go on sale until Halloween day but I guess some people just can't read the :rlz

I'm calling in a favor, and I'm prepared to show up with some Tat's that the Regency has only heard about, in an effort to bribe my way onto the Reserve List...lol.
I do know of several people that already have Drac's and Boris' sitting comfortably in their humi's...the bastards...lol.

Yup consistently one of the safest big cities in the country, great weather, beautiful women, close to the beach. Sorry I guess you dont like those things my mistake.

As to the Dracs and Boris if you are in the bay area Mission says they are in on Tuesday Should be on the counter on Tuesday night. As to those not in the area they are going to be pricey because of taxes and she likely wont be doing any phone sales for days as she wants to sell them locally.

Well, They released the retailer lists the day after Columbus Day, so I was returning off of a 3 day holiday and didn't have to be at work till noon. Once the list got released at 10 AM my time, I called a few shops, all secondary retailers, and they had spots open. I got mine from a shop in Sacramento.

I don't understand what the issue is...

I've called about 15 shops out of the 200+ additional shops on the list of B&M getting them and they are all getting 3-4 boxes and haven't even had anyone ask for them yet.

They aren't that hard to find. I'm a damn newbie and I have a box reserved to pick up this week. A little leg work and they can be found and purchased.

Well so far I called for 3 hrs on the 13th. Got on several list and was told adios. No biggie it happens. Then called the secondary shops in IL that are getting them. " I am getting them, no kidding thanks for the heads up. "Maybe I can sell you some after the 1st of Nov if there are any left."
Then did the 2 hr scavenger hunt on e retailer saturday. In the cart 3x. So saying a "little leg work and they can be found" All I know is IL has alot of Tat whores and there hard to find to say the least. Having said this i dont even mention the 2 names anymore. Just mo.
(its ok though cause evertime I look into the vinos I get to look at a box of T110s, Sw Maddies, Noella Res, Noella Regios Res, Cab OR, and a bunch of sticks that are rarer then those currently being sold):tu

:tpd: I believe I already said this too. We are creating a lot of the hype around these cigars by calling the stores and asking about them. Just because a limited amount of people, spread around the country, on a cigar forum know about them doesn't mean the rest of the nation does. Once they hit local shelves I think it will be easy to get them :2

The key thing is you might have to pay a premium price and you need to be patient :tu

Bro, this is totally after-the-fact....

and if you still persist... then answer me three questions...

1. Do you agree with Pete's allowance of shop owners/workers to win the ducati because they opened all the boxes prior?

2. Do you agree with Pete's allowance of the Local B&M's allowance to sell them online and ruin, RUIN the excitement of the "locallized" luckiness of having a nearby B&M that got the first initial shipment?

3. Do you agree with Pete's allowance/tolerance for B&M's charging more than the afforementioned 13.00 per-stick pricetag that was publicly announced before theyshipped?

I'm confused by one thing that hopefully someone with a more advanced business degree than my measly BA can answer: why such a fuss about stores charging X over MSRP for a product?

I've worked two retail jobs and have never heard of a manufacturer berating a retailer for selling their product OVER MSRP.

In a Niche-like special event situation (this being halloween) like a "monster series" it looks bad if your 13.00 dollar cigar sells for more than 13.00 dollars considering the number 13 is used repeatedly in trends of the event.... Kinda ruins it you know?

I get the cuteness of releasing 13xxx boxes to 13 stores while he had 13 pennies in his left pocket while wearing only one size 13 shoe while walking down 31st street (he had dyslexia :() but I don't think it's a matter of contention.

Capitalism being what it is, stores are as free to raise their prices however far they want as you are similarly free to shop at other venues. All this talk of price gouging is just absurd.

My take on the pricing.

I have a read a lot of things about Pete Johnson. He seems to be a great guy, and someone who believes in B&M's. He seems pretty strict concerning MSRP, and I believe The Party Source got in trouble one time for posting prices far lower then MSRP for some of his sticks (It could have been about another manufacturer).

My take: If you are going to be upset at retailers for selling your product for lower then MSRP, then you should also be upset and take action against retailers selling your product above MSRP. While we have the choice what retailers to buy from, I think Pete also has the choice as to who sells his product. It would be easy for him to tell retailers that if they do not sell it at a certain price, he will not sell to them. Of course, this only works if people actually want to buy and sell his product. But so far, Tat is a product that many retailers want to sell- as shown by the craze caused by these limited edition cigars.

True, but bear in mind that the very definition of MSRP is Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price. The MSRP is typically put in place to establish a baseline worth (price point) for a particular item.

Bro your talking to the wrong person. I enjoy LE... I pretty much go after any LE item that falls into my hobby that I can. I go out of my way to buy LE and C&R guns because it's stuff that few other people have.

The only reason I have an issue with B&M being eligible for the Ducati is because it means they will open up all the boxes. Should I plan on collecting them it diminishes the value to have the seal on the box already broken. I've already spoken to my B&M and requested a sealed box and had no problem getting him to agree to that.

For you to call someone classless and say they lack integrity because they are able to create a hype about their product and whine because you can't find a box is not only childish but pretty ignorant.

As for the MSRP, every product in the world has an MSRP and it's just that a "suggest price." Doesn't mean it has to be sold at that price. Hell many factors come in to play. A B&M in NY has a much higher tax and much higher rent than a B&M in FL so they have to charge more.

You pay to play, it's that simple. Stop whining. If you don't want it don't buy it. If you do then do the leg work find a box and pay the price.

Funny how people look at cigars differently than they do every other product out there. I don't see anyone on the board complaining about LE cars, guns, guitars, or any other LE product. Ask any musician on this board who collects an instrument what they would do for a LE. Ask a surfer who collects boards what he would do for a LE board. People collect thing and LE makes the collector enjoy the hobby. If you don't like it buy the regular production stuff and stop whining.

This is ridiculous!!

I have to agree with you bro. I was pretty scorned when I could not get a box. And I know Pete personally. But, at the end of the day, LE's in any form are what they are. It's up to you if you want them or not. Price becomes mute at that point.

At least you got the message. I gave them my email address and they never emailed me. That's ok because there are so many more cigars on my want to have list that missing out on these isn't even going to be a dissapointment. I might not shop at Holts for a while though. I've averaged one or two boxes from them for the past 4 or 5 months though so it's their loss not mine.

I will gladly eat my words on my previous post.

I did get an email from Holts. They explained they would sell 3 singles per customer and anyone wanting a box had to come in and talk to the manager. I called the manager and explained I was recently in the store for a Rocky Patel event with my supervisor. We went right from work in uniform and the manager said he remembered us. He also remembered that I was there last week looking for the new San Cristobal Seleccion Del Sol and they were not in yet.

To make a long story short I explained that both my supervisor and I would like to split a box of the Dracs and that I would also pick up the box that I originally went looking for last week.
When I walked in the manager called me by my first name which about floored me because I didn't expect to be a known customer. I guess purchasing about 10 boxes of cigars from them over the last 4 months left an impression but never the less I was still surprised. Not only did I get the box of Dracs, I picked up 4 of the Boris(two singles for each of us) and the box of San Cristobal Seleccion Del Sol that I wanted in the first place.
The Dracs were selling for 13 per single. While doing the math we noticed it didn't add up so upon studying the receipt we noticed they gave us a nice discount so my props out to Holts for taking care of it's military customers and not selling above the MSRP. The Dracs were still sealed although I'm sad to say I didn't get the golden ticket but hey I was impressed once again that Holts did not open the box to take it out if it was there.

This was about 1pm today and they hadn't sold many yet. I did notice they only had about 4 boxes of Dracs and 5 of the Boris by the counter so anyone in the Philly area might have a slim chance still. Sorry it took me so long to get on the computer and post. I had to catch up on some work after my excursion. :banger

I am in the same boat. Shopped there for years and years. I may go to the event but they won't be seeing any of my money. I'll go to get Pete to sign the box I got from another store. SeriousCigars is doing it right. Giving both local and non-local former customers a chance in their raffle based on the amount of business that they have done there in the last 12 months.

I split a box of Drac with a guy I deployed to Iraq with. So far I've smoked one the the 7 I kept and man It was good. A little underfilled but I guess that's better than being overfilled and hard to draw. I put the 2 Boris I picked up and the remainder of the Dracs down for a rest in my Vino. On another note I noticed on the back of the box of Dracs that there was a number written in the upper corner in silver marker. The number on my box was 72. Could that mean I got box 72 of 1300? No biggie just curious.

Anyone hear back from the shop in GA? I can't tell whether I was on a list or not as they took my number down, but I still haven't heard anything.

...Funny how people look at cigars differently than they do every other product out there.

A) Most of us don't "collect" cigars, we smoke them.

B) I've never smoked a car, a gun, guitar or surfboard. Nor do I have ANY inclination to do so.

C) I'm waiting for Pete Johnson to coordinate with Kaizad Hansotia on his next "box".....:r

So I went to Holts today after work figuring I may be able to pick up one or two of each, and walked out with a box of Dracs and two Boris'. I am still in shock, and unbelieveably excited! They still had 2 boxes of Dracs and about 4 of the Boris so I kinda guilt-tripped the manager into hooking me up:D since the other Holts screwed me. Hey, ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

PS thanx for the tip Kevin!

Nice pick up AJ. I was wondering why you didn't participate in my Drac lotto earlier tonight.
It is kind of funny reading back on this thread and seeing some of the comments. First thing that comes to mind is I am glad you are not going to buy Tat products, leaves more for me. If someone was selling a box of Dracs right now, I bet those same people would inquire about purchasing them, funny how that works...:2

I think that is the number... I got 73 actually haha Kinda funny they wrote it in sharpie on the box. Must have been pretty last minute.

My one gripe with Tat is the fact that the box has paint on the inside! Looks cool but I don't want it to affect the smokes! I put the black paper underneath the bundle to prevent too much touching... Any suggestions there???

My complaint is trivial. The lid on the box is so freakin hard to get off. I ended up not closing it all the way so I can get my fingernails in there to kind of pry the lid off next time I get the urge to smoke one. I took the black paper off and tossed it. If anyone thinks the paint will affect the cigars I'll cut some wax paper or something and lay it down inside the box.

just ask coastie tech, he'll succumb to anything with shiney "LE" packaging, it means its better AND worth more. In fact, he just bought a Limited Edition "Pirates of the Caribbean" Lego Pirate ship play set that doesn't hit the shelves until December BRAH!!!

That's not what I was saying at all. I've noticed a trend with your posts here they all tend to have an ignorant, rude and decisive feel to them.

You do you, and I'll do me. I enjoy the LE factor. Never said it made something bigger or better. If you think something that is a limited edition isn't worth more in reality then your mistaken. Go to the WTS section which do you think will sell faster and for more money, a box of Franks or a box of red labels?

You don't have to agree with me. I can accept an agree to disagree. What I think is ignorant is your way of belittling people who have a difference of opinion than you. It's not the first thread I've seen you do it, most likely won't be the last.

Either way like I said you do you and I'll do me because it's what I do best. :tu

Huh??

Bro your talking to the wrong person. I enjoy LE... I pretty much go after any LE item that falls into my hobby that I can. I go out of my way to buy LE. I don't see anyone on the board complaining about LE cars, guns, guitars, or any other LE product. Ask any musician on this board who collects an instrument what they would do for a LE. Got my box of dracs the other day.. Took a whiff and maybe it's the plastic wrap and the paint on the box, but they don't smell as nice as I expected.. I'll give them a little time to settle before I light one up

looks like everyone drank their daily dose of haterade today, here's to electrolites

if all goes as planned, i should be getting a couple boxes of dracs and maybe one of boris on saturday, however as we have all seen... nothing goes as planned, especially surrounding these particular sticks

Well, the friendly FedEx driver just dropped mine off. Tell you what, I'm glad they seal (kinda) them up in paper inside the box....the paint smell from the box is not so pleasant. The smokes themselves though, smell fantastic.

perhaps leaving the box (sans cigars) out will help air it out? or baking powder like many (myself included) have done with fresh vinos? it would be a shame if these couldnt be stored in their box

Exactly my thinking, Ben.. I'm going to be taking these out of the box and sticking the sticks in the paper inside my humidor.. let the box airdry for a bit, then put it back in

Funny first thing I thought of when I saw the box was the paint and how I knew they were not going to air the boxes out then re season them. Knew they would be stinking like crap.

Stearns hilarious I was going to make a haterade comment earlier, but opted not to waste the time. Some people have life all figured out and know no one elses point of view can be equal to theirs. Local shops are supposed to get them today. I guess they wont be as bad as previously thought with taxes as because Pete operates out of Cali he has to pay taxes on the sticks so maybe they wont be so expensive. 13-16 and I will probablly buy a couple. For some reason the boris is kind of exciting to me more than the drac.

I actually did that this morning before work. I took them out and put the bundle in the humi and let the box sit open for the day. Gonna put wax paper in the box to line it but I figure a little airing out can't hurt
