Get rid of your "empty" cans and bottles too. I have a teenager who refuses to clean up after self (until I once a month move his crap out onto the drive way so he can either clean up or move out....damn, he always cleans up). Anyhow, he always leaves cans around and so when we get fruit flies, its always the cans where the flies are hiding.

I have had pretty good luck with those "bug bombs" available at Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, Etc....
Good Luck.

Take a shallow white bowl and put some water, a couple drops of dishwashing liquid, and a little vinegar in it. They will die in there quickly. Replace this mixture everyday. Make up a few of them for better results. Put one near your TV and lamps/lights. They are attracted to the light and electromagnetic field (I heard it on a bug killing show). No matter what we do we get fruit flies every summer. I hate them.
I just made a trap similar to Skywalker's for large flies last week. My landlady has
a couple of dogs, and recently got another one as an inside threat neutralizer.
Problem is she sheds, so now there are 3 dogs out back and all they DO is $hit.
So the flies have been getting out of hand. I took some wet dog food and a piece
of dog poo and built a very similar fly trap and got a few, but there are too many
alternative piles for them to infest. I got a FEW though. But inside, that trap
should REALLY work well. That concept also works well with minnows in a stream,
and with mammals in a much larger form. The old funnel trick.

hardware store has a trap. you pour some liquid in a plastic thing, it attracts them, seems to work.

I once had them and my girlfriend says I am the neatest, cleanest guy she's ever seen, any way what I did and it worked was to...
-Clean up right after eating, meticulously
-covering the garbage
-setting a trap
-spraying everything down with a mild chlorine/water solution
-pouring bleach OR vinegar down th disposal/drain
-another though that may or may not work would be to wait until you are going on a ski weekend and turn the heat to low. that'll should help.
Hope this helps!

We've had some here this summer. I've used a short juice glass with a piece of banana in it, cover the top with plastic wrap, and poke a couple holes with a pencil in the plastic wrap. They get in the glass but not out. Once a day I'd cover the top with my hand, take it outside, and open the plastic wrap. Seemed to work pretty well.

I've set both the funnel and the shallow dish traps, will report back.
If this fails, anyone have a flamethrower I can borrow?

Did you try tagging their ears to see if the same ones return?

Or giving them vasectomies so that they waste precious breeding time with the un-altered wild individuals, resulting in lower egg counts in the breeding population at large?

You received good advice. They'll both work. If I had to guess the shallow dish trap will win the contest. Has worked better for me.

I like the vasectomy idea. Not sure about the logistics though.

Echo Dunkel. Used that very technique just last week to get rid of the ones in my apartment.
