View Full Version : How many tries before deciding on a cigar?

I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on this: How many cigars do you think you need to smoke before deciding if you like a cigar or not?

The reason I'm asking is because sometimes I try something and kind of like it, but not feel sure. Usually, if I try that cigar again, I end up deciding I like it. So, I suppose that would mean I need at least two smokes before deciding on a cigar.

Tonight I tried an Olvia V for the first time (Torpedo), and I'm in this position where I'm just not sure. Do I bother trying it again? Or just let it go, since there are plenty of other things to try? I typically like a full bodied cigar, so that wasn't the problem. I just thought the second half of the cigar was on the harsh side... but I realize a number of things could contribute to this.

So... do you typically give a particular smoke one chance, and if you don't love it, you move on? Or do you give it a second, third, or more of a chance before deciding for sure?

After smoking a stick and seem undecided...I give it another shot. 2X is my limit.

I usually give it a second chance. Many things could contribute to the overall first impression: Time of day, mood, drink, food, health, or others.....

Sometimes it just turns out it was not a good day.

Other times, the cigar is just a POS, and the second time confirms it.

I have also found that I may like a cigar the very first time and due to all of the above, I did not like it the second time.

Lots of times I don't even get them lit before I decide I don't like them. :)
I'll try a few, usually. I force myself to try a lot of new stuff that I really don't want to.
If a cigar doesn't strike me as "good" after three tries, I don't go back.
If they strike me as "bad", they usually get chucked in the alley before an inch is gone.
Life is too short and there's too many good cigars. :tu

I'll try 3-5 before deciding I know whether I like or dislike a stick. But for the most part I'll never right off a cigar. In the past I wrote off The Rocky Patel Decade only to smoke one blind and think it was a great smoke.

I try at least 3 sticks with different amounts of humidor time to see how and if the cigar will improve with time if I'm on the fence.

I usually decide after the first. But sometimes after the second. It really depends what I think of the first.

It depends on how bad try #1 was.

It depends on how bad and how expensive. If it's a complete dog rocket and pricey, I won't bother with a 2nd chance.

As I am a Nub cigar fan, and I love Nubs in general, I thought for sure the Cain would be right up my alley, but I gotta be honest.. I've smoked 5-6 of them, and they are not as strong as touted, and every one of them has horribly wrapper splits about halway down the smoke once I light up. Thats enough for me to say goodbye. They taste decent, but they aren't as strong as I would have liked, and the cracking and splitting wrapper is a big pet peeve. I think I'll let others buy the cains. It pains me to say that, as I really enjoy Nubs (unlike most others here!) :)

If the first one I try is OK I will give it 2 or 3 more tries before deciding. If the first stick I try is really bad, I usually don't return to that smoke.

I usually decide right away on the cigars I don't like . If I'm on the fence I'll try 2 or 3 and wait a while to revisit . One cigar in particular that took me a long time to like is the Fuente Cuban Belicoso , received a box as a gift and didn't like the first few , waited a year and tried again still to no avail , 3 years later now and I really like them . I bought a box of Monte #4's that everybody and their brother here seems to love . I can't find anything about them to like . Traded 5 away and he apparently really likes them so it was not a bad box I bought . A new cigar that I was gifted in a Padilla sampler was the Padilla Habano , really liked it a lot . Bought 5 in a B & M and burned them all up in 5 days . I have since bought 2 boxes and keep watching auction sites for them . They are my current favorite cigar . Good luck in your hunt for the ultimate sublime smoke . :ss

If they have aboslutely nothing I like, I only give them one shot. These would have to be totally terrible to me.

If they are like 4-5 on a scale of 1-10, I'll give them 2 tries just to make sure I didn't miss anything or get a bad stick.

If they are a 6-7 on a 1-10, scale, I might try 3. At this point, I really like some characteristics of the cigar and really don't care for others but WANT to like the cigar based on what I like.

If it is a 8-10, I'm back to one shot. These made it through on the first round.

for me, they usually get just one shot. not saying it's the best method but that seems to be the way things normally work out. Even if I don't fall in love with a cigar right away, I'll try it again. However if I don't like the first one at all, it's not likely to get a second look.

3 x for me. I smoke the first one in a month and then the second one in 3 months and the last one no later than 6 months. I'd hate to miss the boat on a cigar that needed some age to it.

Of course if it is an Arganese then only once for sure!

I smoke until I'm sure. Typically it takes me less than a third to know as there are some tastes I just don't prefer.

If I'm not sure after 1 cigar, I give it another shot. Nothing more the twice. If it cannot win me over after 2 cigars then it isn't worth it.

I work in 3s unless it was absolutely horrible. 3 is a good number.

It all depends on how bad #1 is. If it's really bad I will unlikely try another. If it's mezzo-mezzo, I'll likely try it again. If it's outstanding, I'll smoke another, and then a third. After three "outstandings" a cigar is a keeper.

But, as has been suggested, there are so many stogies out there, you could smoke a different one daily for years before having to duplicate!

Now, after over 5 years of smoking, I'm still at stage one, going through different cigars. I have my favs, but keep trying new ones. Eventually, I'll hafta make up my mind- or maybe not!

If the flavor profile is not to my liking I pretty much don't try another one.

If the first one is pretty blan I get another one and put it in my humi for at least a month and give it a second try. If I don't like it after the second thats it for me.

:tpd: I work exactly the same way. There are times that I know I will not like the second one but I try it anyway.

Some I like right away, others need to grow on me.
For example, the Oliva V was an instant keeper,
but anything Camacho is suspect to me.

First impressions are lasting.

I usually buy between 2 and 5, depending on the source.
I don't buy singles online. If I get a 5er I'll try one or two,
then either keep the rest or give them away. Just because
I didn't like them doesn't mean my local herf budds won't
like them.
