a whole half a game... versus Vandy no less, bravo Urban, way to stand up for what's right

"Meyer then spoke to Spikes and determined he was retaliating after getting his helmet ripped off and eye poked earlier in the game. Meyer also talked to Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive, but Florida officials said it was Meyer’s decision to suspend Spikes."

Football's a rough sport gentlemen. Let's not go overboard attacking Spikes - if you want him benched, what about the original offender? You can't make a huge deal out of the small percentage of incidents that show up on film if you're going to allow those that the cameras miss to go unpunished. Sounds like the first guy did the same thing but against a helmet-less Spikes, which was not the smartest decision. Yes it was unsportsmanlike, but no one's going to seriously expect Spikes to go shake the dude's hand after he was grabbing at his unprotected face.

Plus, it did come down to Meyer's decision, and he really has no reason to make some big PR statement out of some minor incident like this.

Y'all won, y'all did not whip anybody's a$$ that day. Give Lane a couple of full recruiting years and let's talk.

scottie

kiffin can have his moral victories. we'll keep the ones that count in the record books.

UF also had a coach once who could recruit but not coach......his name was Ron Zook

If he was like Ali and backed it up I could respect him but he has not. As a UF fan I hate FSU and Georgia as well. the difference is I respect Bowden and Richt, I do not respect Kiffin.

He's some d@mn Yankee comin' into the SEC thinkin' he owns the place w/o paying his dues. Of course Meyer is a Yankee too :r

Did not say you did not win, said you did not whip anybody's a$$. If you think he can't coach then you must not have watched any of our games last year. He is getting more out of less talented players than Fulmer ever did.

Give it a year or two when the talent level gets closer and we can resume the debate.

scottie

It's his father's work of art and not Lane himself. Tennessee's defense is very talented, but who is coaching... I honestly believe it's the coaches around him and not himself... The celebrity of coaches around him is what will drive the recruiting...

so you're saying, if everyone does something wrong, but only a few people get caught, they really shouldn't get punished because someone else didn't??

it may not be cheating if you don't get caught, but he was caught red-handed, and should be punished. Benching him for the whole Vandy game would still be a token punishment anyway since it's Vandy. It's a pretty weak and spineless punishment for what could have permanently damaged the other player. The ends don't justify the means, his intent was malicious, and should be punished accordingly. those are my :2

you're free to feel however you wish

TheManWithNoName

so you're saying, if everyone does something wrong, but only a few people get caught, they really shouldn't get punished because someone else didn't??

In a sense. If he'd be punished for retaliation, then they should go back and find the original offense on tape - they have enough cameras to catch it, it just wasn't on the TV screen. Since it was apparently the same offense, that should be punished too right? But then things get complicated. If you don't punish the same earlier offense, it still supports the "OK unless caught" idea which promotes the behavior in the first place.

it may not be cheating if you don't get caught, but he was caught red-handed, and should be punished.

What it comes down to is that the refs and officials saw it, and chose to let it go. They're the ones who make the decisions. We can sit and argue about it 'til the cows come home and it won't make any difference in the world. Good thing it didn't affect the outcome of the game. The dude may have acted in an unsportsmanlike manner, but I'd bet a hefty wager this little incident won't hurt him at all when he's being drafted.

so you are saying that Florida is good SOLELY because of Urban? I bet Charlie Strong thinks the same thing.

Not solely no. At least with Florida I feel as though Urban Meyer and his team is much more collective, as you can see we are doing alright without him Charlie Strong. I feel Tennessee at this moment is getting by with their defensive end... I have no doubts however in the years to come Tennessee will become a very major contender in the SEC...

From MSN Sports:

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - A most unlikely person came to the defense of Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was suspended for half a game for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey.

Ealey said Tuesday he doesn't believe Spikes should have been suspended.

In fact, Ealey seemed surprised the play from Saturday's game drew so much attention.

Florida coach Urban Meyer on Monday suspended Spikes for the first half of this week's game against Vanderbilt after the defensive captain stuck his hand in Ealey's helmet and appeared to try to stick his fingers in Ealey's eyes.

Ealey says he doesn't agree with those who have said the suspension was not stiff enough.

"That really didn't matter to me," Ealey said of the suspension. "That's their decision. He shouldn't, I think, get suspended at all. We were just out there playing football."

Ealey said he had his eyes closed when Spikes stuck his hand in his helmet and he wasn't hurt.

"He really didn't gouge my eyes," Ealey said. "He really didn't get a chance to get close to my eyes."

The freshman said he believes similar incidents happen all the time.

"I'm pretty sure it goes on back and forth," he said. "We probably do it and other teams do too. It's all football. We're just out there trying to have fun."

It is all good, man. I feel like our defense has carried us most of the year but our offense is getting better and we are only a good QB and a little better special teams away from being a top 15 team right now. Getting to a bowl game and being allowed the extra 4-5 weeks of practice will only help us improve for next year. At this point last year I would not have given us much of a chance to have a .500 or better record this year, however we are better than our 4-4 record would lead you to believe IMHO. I am sure we are on the upswing and hope to challenge you Gators for the SEC East in the next couple of years. I do feel like we are better coached (be it head or all of the assistants) than we have been in a long, LONG time. Looking forward to hosting you guys next year in Knox-vegas. If any of you travel to the games, let me know as I am sure a herf could be worked out.

From MSN Sports:

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - With all the negative attention "weighing heavy on his heart," Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes asked to serve a full-game suspension for apparently trying to gouge the eyes of a Georgia running back.

Coach Urban Meyer obliged, saying Wednesday that it was in the top-ranked Gators' best interest that Spikes sit out Saturday's game against Vanderbilt.

"I really don't want to be a distraction to the team," Spikes said after practice. "I want the guys to prepare without any negative things going on, and I feel like if I would play, it would be a big thing going on. I'm just trying to stay out of the way and just motivate the guys."

WTF! When LSU wins, they don't move up in the BCS standings. They lose to Bama and move up one spot.

It doesn't matter anyway. The season just got tougher for LSU. Charles Scott is out for rest of the season with a broken clavicle. The injuries yesterday really hurt LSU because they were putting up a good fight until they started losing starters.

This just in from Gainesville:

Florida players continued their unsportsmanlike antics in the game against Vanderbilt on Saturday. Safety Will Hill pushed a player off the monkey bars in the first quarter while CB Joe Haden could clearly be seen giving a Vandy WR a horrific Indian rug burn just before half-time.
The poor conduct continued in the second half as DE Jermaine Cunningham gave the Vandy QB an unrelenting wedge following a sack. The most inexcusable incident of all however occurred in the 4th quarter when LB Ryan Stamper, filing in for the suspended Brandon Spikes, gave Vandy's freshmen RB a tormenting wet willie at the bottom of the dog pile.
Severe suspensions are expected to follow for all listed.

I really like how some of the sports analysts are now piling on SEC officiating being so bad and so blatantly in favor of Alabama and Florida. On both Pardon the Interruption and Around the Horn today one of the topics was the blown interception call in the LSU/Alabama game.

On both Pardon the Interruption and Around the Horn today one of the topics was the blown interception call in the LSU/Alabama game.It may surprise everyone here, but I am fine with the call in the LSU BAMA game. It was too close to be called on the field, even though they called it. I still think the call was wrong, but there were no indisputible replays with which to overturn it, and while it would have bouyed LSU somewhat, once all our players started dropping like flies, the game was over, call or no call. As for powersmoker, 'waa' yourself, beyotch. Florida plays dirty and gets caught on tape several times a game doing it. Do all teams play ugly? I think so, at times. It's like holding, the old "every play" deal. But make no mistake, people hate Florida for good reason. People also love Florida for good reason. And maybe you are tired of hearing all the whining. Who knows. Hell, who CARES. But don't try to hide behind too much humor, cause your team is a sucky busload of scumbags.:td:rolleyes::r:r

Haha, I got a kick out of that myself.
Two GOOD non-winning efforts against perhaps the two best teams in the country? Not out of line at all.

As for LSUs tough road, call it BCS disease. I no longer care what LSU does, cause they are out of it.
I love my Tigers, but after botching both chances at glory that were tailor-made for Cinderella stories,
I just have no more give-a-$hit left. I hope they go to a good bowl and wear someobdy OUT, but...ehh.

After watching some of the replays on different sports shows today, it was a bad call. Probably didn't make a difference in this game though. There are articles on just about all the major sports websites now criticizing the officiating in the SEC in general and how the SEC's solution is to fine or suspend anyone who publicly comments on the bad officiating. To me that is the real "scandal".

Bad calls happens in every game. Great teams manage to win despite the bad calls. Last Saturday the best team just happened to be Alabama. Personally I hope Alabama beats Florida in the SEC Championship because I really don't like Florida.

I have cooled off quite a bit since Saturday. But in this conference that is under so much scrutiny,
with their 3 BILLION dollar TV deal, I am just saddened that competent officials with the benefit of slo-mo
replay, are still making the wrong calls. Then you have the Mt. Cody helmet no-call, the bull$hit celebration calls.
These calls are RIDICULOUS. It has me fatigued and dis-interested. And if anybody thought the conspiracy
theories would die down, well, there is little chance of that now. When I cap on your teams, it is all in fun.
That's why this thread is here. And like I said, it is a sad commentary on the state of affairs in the BCS
that I could care less who wins the title now. I remember fondly when it was all about what bowl you went
to, and very few teams thought much of their chances to win a national championship.
Maybe it doesn't say much for my fan-ness. I have always stated i am an Alabama fan until they play LSU
and so i am also hoping for a good showing in ATL. And thank goodness I have months to get over it, or i would

Maybe it doesn't say much for my fan-ness. I have always stated i am an Alabama fan until they play LSU
and so i am also hoping for a good showing in ATL. And thank goodness I have months to get over it, or i would
have a tough time holding down my supper watching that game. Roll Tide. And Power...I don't hate the gators,
I hate YOU for taking my cigars......

Calls are Calls, they happen each and every game, anything can be called on any play. Sometimes they are good sometimes they are bad. Each team gets there fair share of good and bad.

Yeah, but I am not bitter about call A or call B. I am saying it is sloppy, incompetent, and
very much under a national microscope. I could care less how it affected my team. If a team
can't play PAST bad calls, they don't deserve to be thought of as elite. I am saying that it is
embarassing, and there are people who say that it borders on criminal.

You act as if bad calls are a new thing when in fact they aren't. It is just the technology and information highways that proliferate opinions these days. Take the Peterson play from Saturday and put that same play back 20 years. The play is ruled incomplete on the field and then the next snap is run. Over and done. Now, we have 8 million cameras with slo mo, zoom, all kinds of crap and sometimes peoples opinions differ and what do they do, go to the innerwebs or blogs or sports "shows" and bicker and harp about it for weeks.

Bad calls suck, they really do. But I'm so sick of this conspiracy crap. Come on people, conspiracy? Really?

No spin needed on that, that's just thuggery, and they should all be suspended for the year,
if not kicked off the team. Here in TN, though, you hear alot about how coaches go into kids' homes
and tell their parents that they are going to look after their kids if they will just sign on, and this is something
that the coach is going to have to guide his players through. Blabla, I say eject thugs for good, make a point.
But you are likely looking at a 3 game suspension. The joke here in TN on the radio is, "Kiffen needs to go back
to the film room and work on fundamentals..."this is how you hold the gun. Speak up in a loud, clear voice, THIS
is a robbery. Everybody on the floor."

As for the confused look from Powersmoker, I have to clarify. LSU #1, no doubt or question. But LSU is
not always on TV, so when Bama is on, I pull for Bama UNLESS they are playing LSU. My Bama roots go
back to the early 70's, and that will not change. Cause in fact as a kid I was a Tulane fan and a Bama fan. Did not like LSU.
Where I am from you don't like LSU and Tulane, it's one or the other. I GREW into LSU fan-ness in the USAF.

As for Rizzle, that's an apples and oranges argument. When technology advances, everything
advances along with it. You are right, this would not have been a concern 20 years ago, but now we
have it, and a one-frame difference in video is that hair-thin margin that makes the difference.
Sure, replay drags everything down, and artificially arbitrates these fluid calls that we never had to
question before, just go on to the next snap and suck it up. But we ARE HERE NOW, and there is no getting around it.
And if you read a few pages back to the day of the "interception" you will see that I was all in favor of
just moving on, LSU loses, Bama advances, everybody gets what they wanted all along, Bama vs UF.
If a team loses cause of one bad call, they weren't positioned to win it anyway.

Oh, yeah, and I for one am not into the conspiracy theory. EVEN if it was a rigged setup, I don't care.
I thought that the celebration call was correct, if we do not want excessive me, me, me celebrations,
we ought not have ANY, the old 'give em an inch' syndrome. I shout at the TV everytime a player gets
a sack and bolts out of the area pulling his hersey and nodding up and down, I think it is the first step in
turning college football into what the $hitty-a$$ NBA has become. LEAD by doing your job, find praise
in the huddle and from what the fans are giving you, no need to remind anyone of what you just did.
We were watching, idiot. We KNOW you made a great play. Stop being a dumb-a$$. I could go on.

Ehh, interceptions happen. It wasn't that so much as they just didn't play the kind of game it takes to beat FLA. So maybe it WAS the INT, after all. But once again, the great mind of all football commentators, Gary Danielsen said it best. "Florida FINDS a way NOT TO LOSE games." Great distillation of this inexplicalble talent they have this year for tantalizing teams.."C'mon, guys, you can do it...beat us, we dare you." Then the teams begin to beieve it, and then FLA turns up the heat and wins, anyway. Just amazing.
Nice win for the Florida guys.

deer in the headlights, he still did not know what was happening, or clearly knew he
could NOT say, "I screwed up". WASTED the amazing efforts of his team to come from
behind, even though our stellar receivers had another night of the drops, and Jefferson is
as lost as Miles. Can't see how a new coach finds a QB, but LSU desparately needs one
and Miles is done.

Dunlap should not play in the SEC championship game or the title game. Falling asleep at a green light? he could have killed someone. He also cost himself millions of bucks since i'm sure he knocked himself out of the top 10 draft pics.

Missing Dunlap is gonna be big for the Gators i'm afraid, I think he's the third or fourth best player on our team behind Tebow, Spikes and possibly Joe Haden. With #8 out UF's task of stopping Ingram and getting pressure on McElroy, the key to the game in my opinion, just got a lot harder

Idk about not playing in the National Championship game. First they have to get there...

I think if he sits out the SEC Championship game thats a fair enough fine. Yes, while what he did could have injured many, it didn't. A majority of his punishment will be felt in the millions of dollars he is going to loose later in possible draft status.

I am no way condoning DUI's or drinking, or anything of that matter, but lets be honest he was a dumbass, and his mistake will cost more than it would cost any other kid who gets a DUI.

What good does dismissing him from the team now, an not letting him play if they get to the National Championship game do for anyone? He is a kid, and kids make mistakes.

In the SEC game, or in both?

Both, unless there is a VERY good reason why he got it, which will be quite difficult. There is no excuse for a DUI, I'm sure being on the football team he could have called NUMEROUS people to pick him up or something

Might as well call today's game the National Championship Game :D

As for Dunlap's fate, We can all debate how severe a DUI is, how potentially deadly it could have been, or the fact that he ended up hurting anyone...

The fact is, UF students face an entire semester of suspension from the University if charged with a DUI (minimum). Bending the rules for an athlete (especially where the infraction is a criminal offense) is a bad look for an academic institution. As much as I would like to see him play, and acknowledge his special talents above and beyond the "rest" of us students, showing the country that we are compromising integrity in order to boost an athletic program is a much bigger loss. :2

No there is nothing to say, but I had to watch team after team get their foot on the necks of the gators
and let em up, and they got their butts handed to em. 4 different teams had a real shot, and just failed
to stick the dagger in deep enough. What a way to LEARN and BURN. I hate Nick Saban, but I love the Tide.

Normally I would say, yeah, you got me...no, really, I WOULD.:D
But even being a fair-minded individual, I have to say you need to go back to the drawing board and select another example. Year after year, Mizzou makes fans forget that they are really just another run of the mill good football team. The best in any other conference still has trouble with good or middle-level SEC teams. That's not SEC fan bravado, that is statistical and empirical fact. Ask Ohio State.

I think the game will be a good one to watch, but don't expect the 'horns to do much against Alabama. Maybe global warming will bring parity to the NCAA. ;) All kidding aside, if anyone can do it, I think Texas is best suited. I still do not see it happening, but you are right.

my point was more than both teams have escaped with wins this season. Bama definitely played their best yesterday, and Texas certainly did not. Here's hoping that that was Bama can't quit match that, and that Texas brings it. Because yes, if both duplicate yesterday, Horns might as well stay home.

my point was more than both teams have escaped with wins this season. Hehe, not to worry for sure. How do you think I FEEL, I am a LSU Tiger fan, lol. But I have always loved the Tide,
since i was a kid. I USED to be a Tulane fan back then, which meant you hated LSU. In reflection, I also forgot that Texas is
not Indiana, or Kansas where you don't get much super football. Texas is as much about football as Florida is. The great players grow like weeds.
Now that I mentioned it, I think Mac Barnes used to COACH Tulane.
But I digress...after a month off, it's a toss up. Texas is fully capable of pulling it off, and BOTH of these so called
great teams from the SEC were beatable EVERY WEEK this year, at least by SEC competition.

Tom

I still believe in you! Regardless of your insistence on rooting for the Gators!! Oh well, could be worse, you could have been rooting for Auburn!!!:D:r:r But, of course, you know I'm kidding! And any Auburn fan that knows me also knows I like Auburn, except for that ONE Saturday in November (and I like most other SEC teams, except when they play Bama - Tennessee excepted). That's very much like you are, root for your team, NOT against the other team. Makes much better fan base.

I have to say that I'm not a big Tebow fan. It has nothing to do with his religious beliefs/activities. I just think that he showed a total lack of class when he broke his verbal commitment to Alabama by waiting until the Bama coach showed up and meeting him at the door wearing Florida hat and jersey. That was a total embarrassment to the Bama coach, and no apology has ever been issued that I know of. I understand why Tebow changed his mind, and I don't have an issue with that. I have an issue with how he chose to convey that information to Alabama! From Tebow's standpoint, he made the correct choice, because there is no way Bama would have built a team totally around him like Meyers did. Bama has never been a "one person" program. I do not think Tebow would have the recognition he has today if he had played at Bama instead of Florida.

I have to say that I am very disappointed in anyone who takes glee in the fact that he was crying after the loss!! That shows a total lack of class, IMO. Anyone who is as big of a football fan, as Tebow is a Gator player, has to recognize the emotions that go into the game. Especially for players that are oftentimes still in their teens or early 20's! I would have expected a great show of emotions if Bama had lost. Hey, that's SEC football!

I do wonder what the Gators are going to do next year. They returned all but one or two starters this year, but won't have that luxury next year. It'll be interesting watching the recruiting this year.

I have to say Roll Tide, or else I wouldn't be much of an alumni or fan, now would I.

Don't know that I'd go quite that far, but I understand your point.

I had said I liked our chances before but I certainly didn't see it playing out quite as it did.

You know, people can say what they want about Dunlap, but you just don't lose a guy like that under circumstances like that and it not have an effect. Just look what happened to us when we lost Andre Smith the week of the Sugar Bowl last year. And I'm smart enough to know that that wasn't the sole reason we won the game. But distractions hurt you man, and the gators had them everywhere last week. Dunlap's DUI, Meyer to ND, Strong to Lousiville, and then quite frankly, I don't think Florida thought we could beat them.

This team plays with a purpose though. They just bring it. And for a long time fan and alum they're a joy to watch. It's been a hell of a ride this year and yet I somehow don't think we're done.

So...welcome to the fray horn fans. And don't forget that we owe you guys one too. Actually, we owe you about seven. Hopefully we'll get the first one back January 7th.

Roll Tide!

I haven't heard that story before about Tebow breaking his commitment. I remember his choice of Bama or Florida being live at his high school and covered by ESPN.

We definetly use Tebow a heck of a lot but i think its a little far to say Florida is a "one person" program. Meyer has consistently said, and shown on the field, that he builds his spread offence around his players. When we had Leak at QB in 06 it was very different. Last year we utilized Percy, Tebow and Murphy. This year we have relied on Tebow more because other players on offense haven't been able to take over games. Despite great years by TE Hernandez and WR Copper.

In short, when any coach has a player of Heisman caliber, that team will naturally look "one person". :2

If you want bash the three things you consider the downfall, go ahead and I could prolly agree with you on some things. In answer to your offer to PM me I'll pass, I already get all of your opinions I can stand.

It seems to me that you spend a lot of time trying to provoke people into an argument, most folks ignore you and after this post I shall go back to doing that myself. So I M done.:tuWhy put a wink smiley in there after calling me a jackass if you think I am an a$$hole and you get all of my opinions than you can stand?
Is it so you look like a good guy for putting a wink in with a bash rather than just bashing? You should feel
free to bash me full on without the pretense if you feel that way about me. In fact, if you are going to bash

It ws a quick way of saying the following teams had a legit shot to beat FLA straight up, and let their foot off their necks:

Tennessee
LSU
ARK
USC

OK, I see YOUR point, lol That leaves Vandy, MS State, UG-AY who got taken behind the woodshed.
But the other 4 just failed to retain focus, or UF could have had 4 losses without any real stretch of the imagination.

I still believe in you! Whoa, whoa, whoa...Like I just reminded GGainey, don't smileys mean anything?? Tom is not untrustworthy in my eyes, I was having a laugh over his hard-core support for UF all season.

I have to say that I am very disappointed in anyone who takes glee in the fact that he was crying after the loss!! That shows a total lack of class, IMO.
You got me there, I don't like him, and I lauged out loud when I saw him crying. Mostly because I am in TV, I am not affected by advertising, cause I make it and know it is a big show. I also am rarely affected by television generated drama. So while most people see Tebow in tears as this great once-in-a-lifetime glimpse into the soul of the vulnerable athlete, I see it as "take camera 3...gimme a slow zoom in on his face...oh, we're gonna win an emmy for this." Plus I don't like the guy at all. I know, i am one in a million. I am allowed my laughter in the midst of his suffering.:D And on top of that, I have had to hear a non-stop UF love-in for 10 weeks, and now I am having MY moment, which I do not apologize for. Furthermore, when Cincinnatti hands them their a$$ again, I will have another.:banger

Not giving you a hard time, I respect you Kid, but you misunderstood a common bit of knowledge, that I love Tom. Derh.

The Tebow stuff was added so that you can see that I have every right to laugh in the face of his tears. And I mean that with all due respect to your feelings about his tears. I also know that you know it is my right. I just had to refute some of the points you made. I lost some cigars to my dislike of UF this year, and I am not shy about the fact that I do not like their team. I have dealt with LSU's internal combustion. This thread is a friendly cookpot of rivalry and emotion.

Hehe, you're right on that one.

I felt bad for Tebow, though. He was sitting there smiling and kind of knowing that he was not going to win,
and maybe thinking, "what the heck am I doing here?" But he had to know he was going to do better than McCoy.
And my guess is he thought he had a better chance than a defensive guy. And out of the two RBs, maybe he knew
he might place between them. But his 2009 was....ehh? It was good enough to be at the helm of the No.1 team all year,
but everybody could see he was well behind his previous year. What a tough call for him. I bet he can't even figure out
why he was not as good this year. It certainly is a mystery to me. By all rights he should have KILLED! And even at
that, I do not roll my eyes a bit when people say he might be the best player ever to play collegiate football.
