View Full Version : Your memorable "Cigar Smoking Experiences"

We always talk about "the cigars". Good ones, bad ones etc. For me, the most poignant memories are of the experience of smoking with others and the memory of the specific cigar is just a place holder.

I have quite a few:

After Kait was born (emergency C section) had a HDM Excalibur #1 in the hospital parking lot. No cigar will ever taste sweeter or last longer in my memories.

On the pier with Jeff and Tom last year smoking the last 3 Partagas 898V's from SHI. From small things such great friendships arise.

With my partner Doug in the back yard 7 years ago smoking a Gurkha Regent Toro. Had just gotten the bus to a good fnancial place and ... the damn ash was concrete. We ashed once for the entire cigar.

Taking one hit off the fake glass top Cohiba a few weeks ago that was going around in the Punishment PPP. Thinking about the absolute commitment to others enjoyment being displayed by those taking more than one draw on that rolled up bunch of misc crap.

Attending my first herf, MMHI. Walking in with my little 15ct box I felt like a little kid ridding the high school bus. Meet a lot of people and putting names to faces after being on the CS for 7 months. Also one hell of a PPP, if that isn't a kick down the slope I don't know what is.

Last one has to be Shack V, seeing some of the best people in the world again. Just watching the banter between Jeff, Patrick and Fred was absolutely hilarious. I can't remember the last time I laughed that hard. Also starting the Boat Dock herfers with Perry and Greg. The cigars were great too! :ss

My cousin aunt and uncle are home visiting my granmda for the week. I havent seen them in 10 years and last night we went out and had a wonderful italian dinner. I came home and fired up a H Upmann Coronas Major that has been sitting in my humidor for a few years and relaxed on the back deck. It was one of the better cigars I have had.

Earlier this year a really good friend of mine who I worked with in Gettysburg passed away due to Cancer. After his funeral I went on the battlefield and fired up a 2005 Cohiba Robusto and reflected on his life and the time we spent working together. To this day that Cohiba was the best cigar I have ever had.

This summer when my three sons sat down with me to all have a cigar for the first time. Not that it mattered what we smoked but it was a nice touch that I could be with them for their first CC.

HERFing with the Massholes. A special bunch of guys that you just have to meet to really appreciate just how great they are.

Cleveland HERFing with Jermery, Robert and Dave at the Quaker Steak and Lube. Had such a nice time that night. Thanks again guys.

The very first BABOTL herf, it was just Me, Mikey Burr, Bobarian, Smokey Bob, and Jeff. It's amazing how much the BABOTL have grown in a few small years.

Spending an afternoon with Dball in Redwood City. Exchanging sticks, having lunch, walking around shooting the ****. It was a blast.

Hmm...a few right off the top of my head:

Smoking an 07 Parti Short while watching a massive electrical storm pass over my place a couple of years ago. I don't know if it was the intensity of the circumstances or if I had lit the cigar at just the peak of freshness...but I've never had a better Short before or since.

The 07 Monte Joyita I lit up and passed around with the Michigan crew at this past Shack. We picked up flavors I never thought possible in a cigar (fennel seed, shifting to coriander and saffron) and we were all laughing about it.

The 1935 La Palina I got to finish off at MegaMoB I in May of '07...the first clear Havana I'd smoked, my first really aged cigar, and I couldn't believe I was smoking something literally as old as my parents.

The first Parti Short I lit up from the first box I ever bought...feeling I'd passed a major milestone of some sort in my life.

The Monte 4 I lit up with a friend from New York on my back porch three nights ago...good times!

My wife and I were on our honeymoon in the Dominican and we met another couple from the same state, married at the same time, on the same day. So this couple and my wife and I ended up hanging out all week. The resort was all inclusive so we had free food, free drinks, good company AND the gift shop sold a variety of good cigars including genuine Cuban Cohibas. My buddy and I tried to smoke at least one cigar a day during the rigorous schedule of relaxing with the wives. One night after dinner the girls went off to do their thing and I found myself at the bar with my new friend who was into cigars. He handed me a Cohiba and we lit ‘em up.:ss Damn it was a great cigar! We sat and smoked and drank and talked about life and the world in general. It was an experience where the whole world seemed to slow down. Within a month I had my 200 capacity humidor and I have been doing my best to fill it with a wide variety of tasty treats since then.

The whole experience was awesome but specifically that one night was what gave me “The Fever”.

I am still new to smoking cigars so I am looking forward to building a lot more memories.

I've shared one particular memory before of smoking on new year's eve with a good family friend Sam. We were the last ones awake and I had brought a Padron 64 for him and a huge Tatuaje for myself. He has a pretty big humidor but doesn't ever buy expensive smokes. He broke out into the biggest goofy grin when he lit the Padron. It was priceless. After 30 minutes of good conversation his phone rings, (this was after midnight). It was his son telling him to get dressed and head to the hospital, his grandson was about to come into the world. Needless to say he rushed inside to get dressed and make a pot of coffee. About 15 minutes later he comes back outside before leaving and would you believe that Padron was still lit and smoking like he never sat it down.

Another experience I remember clearly was just about 2 years ago . I had recently gotten out of a relationship that I had been dying to end for several months. I had moved into a new place that I absolutely love. It's sort of a 2 story townhouse style place with a big balcony coming off my bedroom. There are a couple big palm trees in front that hang right over it, forming a perfect little tropical canopy.

I was very happy with my new place but I still had lingering feelings of loneliness at night. I was on my own for the first time in several years and while relatively happy, I was also desperate for some good company. I had my eye on one particular special lady and finally got the chance to take her out. We had a great time, talked and drank champagne late into the evening, so late in fact that she decided to just stay over and fall asleep.

I wasn't tired yet so I decided to step onto the balcony to smoke a Party short. Sitting there on my balcony I started to reflect on the last 12 months and how I had completely changed my life for the better. Gone was the apartment that I hated, which I shared with a woman I didn't love. just peace and quiet remained. There I was, in my own private tropical paradise, smoking one of the best cigars on the planet. Looking through the window at the beautiful lady asleep in my bedroom, I suddenly had a feeling of accomplishment and hopefulness for the future that I won't ever forget.

As a side note, that beautiful lady and I are still together today. She'll be moving in with me next month and we plan to marry sometime next year.
cheers!

Man, JJG- how do you top that?!

Mine's modest: One of my dad's Cafe Creme in Istanbul, with my dad. I hadn't seen him in a year and we walked around and he showed me the beautiful city.

This is probably not what you are looking for but here goes...

Back in 2006 I stumbled upon a cigar forum known as Club Stogie.
Little did I know at the time just how much of a life changing experience it would be.
When you are almost 50 years old,I for one thought I had made most of the good friends I thought I would ever make.Boy was I ever wrong.
I have made friends through the forums that I consider closer than some family members, ones that I communicate with in one form or another every day.
These friends have enriched my life more than I ever could have imagined.
All thanks to a rolled up weed.

That's my memorable Cigar Smoking Experience. :)

When my friends (old and new) come by from near (1 mile away) to far (Aussie land downunder) I am happy. Sunset with the 3 wiseman, Sunset and dinner with Marc ( wife got jealous :D) , countless times with The D.B. laughing so hard we are crying! Times like that I am winning! :tu

A moment shared by many this year at SHV...
As Dave mentioned above, sitting around the table with Jeff, Patrick, and Fred.
Those three stole the show and had me in tears laughing aloud from the belly for about 5 minutes straight.
I cannot remember how we got started, but it was a time to remember. After all, I do believe that Patrick was left speechless from Fred's rebuttal.

Shack V.... being handed an El Rey del Mundo Panetelas Largas and a Mimosa by the host himself will definately be one I remember for a long time. ;) I honestly felt like the guest of honor at that moment.

-Bolivar Gold Medal on the balcony of my hotel room in Aruba.

-A much needed night out here in NYC with a few good friends, I smoked: an '08 ERdM Especiales (RE), '85 Punch Ninfa, '94 CoRo, and a '70s RyJ Corona

I shared this once before, but I can repeat.

One of the most memorable moments for me was back in Iraq. We were going through a string of hard times and tough luck. All us Officer types were swamped with work to do and you could see everyone dragging. We finished up a particularly long meeting and I just threw out the idea of having a cigar. Everyone seemed to jump at the thought. I brought my humi up to the Battalion area and about 15 or so of us guys all sat down and lit one up. We BS'd for a good two hours, leaving Iraq out of the conversation entirely. Following the herf, we all went back to work and all the nonsense was back. Those few hours were a damn good time though.

In a future prediction, lighting a cigar up on the day my second child is born will be very memorable for me. I wasn't able to do that for the first kid....definitely going to make it happen for the second.

Bonfires at the Shack, with the fire crew regulars

Last Christmas at the rents house, there was 18" of snow outside but I went out and shoveled off the patio. Had my dad and two brothers pick whatever they wanted from the humi and we went outside and smoked huddled around the firepit with a fire keeping us warm. One of the coolest smoking pics I have, so very cool to be able to share it with my family.

The thursday night ppp at SHIII, my first. I was sitting between Allen and Tom... If that wasn't a forceful shove I am not sure what would be! I learned so much that night.

One of my favorite times was when I first smoked a cigar with another person. I met chippewastud79 and his friend on a nice summer afternoon. What made it memorable was the great weather, atmosphere (Hooters), and meeting new people just because of a few dead plants.

Attending my first herf in Albany back in March. I had just gotten into cigars around the beginning of this year, and it was great meeting other BOTLs and just talking about smokes and accessories. I also learned a major herfing no-no that day. I had brought a travel humi about half full with smokes to share, and made the mistake of leaving it open on a table for anyone to help themselves. Of course, when I got home and opened it, the damn thing was completely full.
A few weeks ago, the wife and I had dinner with the in-laws at their lake camp. Afterwards, I had a cigar while sitting at the water's edge. It was really peaceful just enjoying a smoke, looking out across the water.

Another great time just happened at this year's Shack Herf V.

It was great just to witness the punishment puff puff pass. Seeing everyones reaction to the fake Cohiba and what was inside it was hillarious :r

oh yeah! How could I forget my first Cuban? It was also my first Cuban box purchase. I had been reading CS for a while and just decided to try one of the vendors from the banner ads. I figured, "they wouldn't let people advertise fakes on CS right?"

well I was right and still order from the same guys today. The excitement of getting that first box was intense. I had never even seen a CC before. I didn't expect it to live up to my expectations but it certainly did.

I have two that I can think of off the top of my head.

First: on my birthday this year I enjoyed my first shared CC moment with a couple friends at the casino bar after an amazing dinner at my favorite restaurant. We smoked Monte #4s

Second: was last night, for a long time I have wanted to have a smoke with my Grandfather and last night I finally did, we were going to smoke on his balcony but it started pouring so we went to the local B&M and I grabbed a Illusione Epernay Le Petite and picked out an Ashton for him.

I've only been smoking for a short time so I don't have many "experiences" to be honest the only one I really have it the Padron 1926 Maduro that I smoked the day of my grandfathers funeral.

As weird as it sounds it was a celebratory smoke, not a mourning one. I was celebrating his life not his death.

Since I saw this thread earlier today I have been trying to narrow it down to one time but I can't. I have 3 times.
The first time I got together with JK5. Sitting there smoking that Padron that you gave me changed my whole look on cigars.
The first Herf I ever went to with the VA crew. I had a blast. Thanks again Ben for the chance to try some of that Red Dot.
When I was in Vegas in Feb. I got to meet up with Andrew and Andy. My wife was with me and she was very nervous about meeting up with "some guys you don't know off the net." Needless to say we had an amzing time. Thanks again fellas.

1st - Smoking a God of Fire on the patio of our hotel in Myrtle Beach with my soon to be wife watching the surf. I proposed to her that morning. The cigar was blah, but the setting was fantastic.
2nd - Meeting Al, Dave, and Jeremy at Quaker Steak back in March. First time I had ever met any of them and I was welcomed like I had known them all my life.
3rd - Sunset at Shack V. Nothing more has to be said for that one.

Thought of two more...that don't directly involve my smoking:

My father was a Habanophile long before I came along...and when he ran out of his stash of pre-Embargos, he gave up cigars altogether. About twenty years later a new member of his Masonic lodge turned out to be an exile Cuban, and somewhere along the way he started giving my father a Cuban cigar once in a while. My father would light 'em up on the front porch, and my bedroom window was right above. While I professed to detest smoking (product of my time I guess), the smoke would drift up into my room...and I hated to admit it, but I LOVED the smell of it.

Three times this year, while I was smoking a CC (and was nervous about complaints from nonsmokers around me), I've heard people downwind of me say "I don't know what that guy's smoking, but it smells GOOD!" :ss

I would say the most memorable is being able to share a smoke with any one of the BOTL/SOTL on here. I am most fortunate to have some great friends that are close that I share smokes with. I am also fortunate to share a smoke from time to time with family, my brother to be in fact. Anytime I share a smoke with anyone it is memorable.

Probably not exactly what was meant by "memorable", but I was amused the other day while smoking an Oliva Series O perfecto at the docks after missing a ferry. I was being polite and standing well at the end of the dock away from the cars that were waiting, but that didn't stop some lady in a Land Rover from throwing a fit about it just loudly enough so I'd be sure to hear it, teach me to smoke a cigar in the Seattle area... I would have enjoyed the perfecto regardless, but a great cigar AND pissing off an uptight Seattleite at the same time? Priceless.

To hark back to JBaileys post, walking into Luhvul I and having people whom I had only known for 2 months, and only through an internet forum, treat me like family. I still am in awe of the group we had there, and how a newbie quickly was brought into that group. All the cigars that day were special, but not because of what they were, but where I was.

St. Louis, 2007, smoked a Monte 2 Dunhill, and a Cabinetta back to back, while hanging with some great people.

Wrapping up an amazing weekend in KC, doing a mini PPP (3 person) with a Clem and 1492.

So many at the Shack over the 3 years I've been, having met so many great BOTLs and shared so many great cigars, hard to single one out. Although getting the "Big Chief" at SH3 stands out, as does the Punishment PPP this year. Smoking the Trinis on the pier on Sunday at SH2, when there was only about 8 of us left.

The Epic PPP in Springfield, at LOLH 6, Klugs hotel room, the walls lined with probably 20+ people. Can't imagine what the cleaning lady thought the next morning. :r Kerry's Pineapple Vodka drink, Tom and I cutting the top off the bottle to eat the goods that were down in the bottom.

My first CS herf with the Jersey/Philly guys. (VS, JoeD, Germantownrob, Raisin)

05 Boli PC. First CC ever, made me realize I hadn't even begun the experience cigars. I had no idea what to expect when I showed up at JRs, but I got a great welcome, enjoyed an awesome night, and smoked more cigars that night than I can think to count, but the Boli PC stands out.

Tonight-

Hopefully this will be a memorable one. Heading down to Atlantic city for one of my best friend's bachelor parties. Bringing down three Opus X double Coronas, that have been sitting for a while. One for my brother, myself and for the doomed groom to be.

Every S.H.I.T. herf is a memorable experience, but I will share one that was not during that herf.

A few years back, a buddy of mine and I went on a road trip to Arizona. Finally arriving at the hotel around 8:30 pm. The hotel we were at was in shambles, they called it construction, the door for the bathroom had been kicked in, and the faucet in the bathroom was loose from the sink. The place was pretty ratty.

We were on the second floor. As we were sitting on the balcony smoking Mombacho Thermonuclears (wonderful cigars BTW) we were having a great time BSing about everything in life, joking about the hotel room, laughing at how disgusting the pool looked with moving mounds of dirt on the floor of the pool. We were having a great time.

I got up to get a drink in the room, we had the sliding glass door closed because we were in a nonsmoking room. I reached for the handle and gave a pull and thought to myself, 'something is not right here'. I tried again, it still did not open, I was puzzled because the latch to lock the door is on the inside and was obviously unlocked as we were outside.

After a third time without any luck of opening the door, I turned to my friend and said "Guess what, you are sleeping on the balcony tonight" he turned to look at me and mumbled out a "what?" to which I replied, "you are locked out of your room, you better go tell the front desk."

He did not believe me and had to try to open the door himself, I looked over the balcony to the floor below and saw that the concrete walkway was too far out to jump to and right below us the "garden" was filled with lava rocks. Both my friend and I were barefoot, so jumping was not a good idea. I told my friend "dude, you are in the military, why don't you monkey yourself on down and go get help". He replied "Hey, I'm Navy not Marines!"

We came to the conclusion that since we were siting on the balcony to relax and smoke cigar, we would continue to do so until we finally saw someone we could ask for help. After about 30 minutes an employee exited the lobby, after laughing at us being locked out, she retrieved a new key to help us out. This employee was quite the light bulb when she shared her wisdom told us "Next time you go outside, don't lock the door behind you". I looked at her and said "This prank would have been funnier had I remembered I can only walk one direction through walls". She stood there puzzled, then left and we walked back outside making sure we did not close the door completely this time.

One might think the story ends there, but the next morning we went down to get our free complimentary breakfast provided by the hotel, which was real potatoes and eggs, we had company because the cook would bring her entire family over for breakfast every morning we were there.

When we headed back upstairs to the room, I put the plastic credit card key in the slot and the door did not budge. I tried again, but still no go. I then told my friend "Dude, you locked yourself out again!" After a bit of joking we headed downstairs to get a new key, turns out the employee that unlocked the glass door for us did not get just another key assigned to our room, but a new one and reprogrammed the door lock.

Needless to say, the next few nights we smoked cigars on the balcony, we never did close that glass door. We also never needed to get new keys.

That is my most memorable cigar smoking experience.

Meeting Allan for the first time at Luhvul 2, getting off work at 10PM on Friday, and driving over to Louisville. Dave (Hollywood) and Allan were the only 2 still standing at about 1:30 when we (Puffy and me) got there. Ended up smoking for another 2+ hours after we got there. Learned the next day that Allan never surfaces at a herf until after noon...usually. ;)

Shack herf V had so many great smoking experiences but the one that stick out of my mind the most during that herf was with Bryan (addiction) and Bobby (bobbyritz). Bryan thought he dropped his shiny black dupont into the grass on the pier had 4 guys on the ground at 10pm with flashlights looking for it. Well there is an on going joke with some of the guys about being a so-called big baller with their cigar collection. Ok so the funny part was having Bryan on his knees with a flashlight digging into his traveldor to see if his lighter fell in there by accident. Bobby sees this from across the pier and yells out "OMG Bryan's such a big baller that he can climb into this traveldor and it's phucken glowing" :r I couldn't stop laughing and neither could some of the other guys there. :tu. Ahhh memories!!!

Fricking great time:banger
