View Full Version : Boycott Scotch

I'm putting this here because it isn't a question about which Scotch I like the best or comparing the different distilleries or regions of Scotland.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090820/ap_on_re_eu/eu_britain_lockerbie
The link is to the story about Scotland releasing the only man convicted - and sentenced to life in prison - for the bombing of the Flight 103 which crashed in Lockerbie, Scotland on Dec. 18, 1988.
This CONVICTED terrorist had no compassion, no mercy for the people aboard Flt. 103. He was part of the terrorist group which decided that they should die. For this he stood trial and was convicted. Yes, I understand that his conviction was being appealed. Yes I know that there are some people in Britain who believe that he is innocent. But I also know that he was convicted and sentenced to die in prison.
Now the Scottish courts has decided to release him because he has prostate cancer and only has four or five months left to live. BUT ISN'T THAT ONE OF THE REASONS BEHIND THE SENTENCE!!!!
Or is this another government bending over and kissing the butt of a terrorist nation under the guise of being humanitarian. "Oh! He's dying. It's so sad! Let's send him home where he can spend the rest of his pitiful life with his family and BEING WORSHIPPED AS A HERO BY THE REST OF HIS TERRORIST NATION!!!
I AM PISSED.
So, I am boycotting all Scotch UNTIL THE TERRORIST DIES and I urge all other Americans to do the same. Since I know this is going to have an insignificant affect on Scotland, this is purely a symbolic gesture on my part. But, if enough people will boycott Scotch UNTIL THE TERRORIST DIES, then maybe someone will notice.

I hear your frustration, but let's not go overboard. The common citizen of that nation has about as much to do with this situation as does the average Scottish distillery worker.

I agree with Doc. Unless the people in the streets are protesting, I would not take out your anger on them for a bonehead government move. Previous boycotts of French (and like wise French boycotts of American) products were mainly driven by popular differences in the nations. This I doubt is a popular decision. I promise not to drink any Scotch tonight though, meet you half-way. :tu

Let me get this straight... this woman, brainwashed and part of a cult, deserves to die due to guilt by association? IIRC, she never actually killed anyone and wasn't involved in the helter skelter killings. She is/was a bad person for sure, but I hardly see the correlation between her and the lockerbie bomber.

Neither was Charles...where's he at again??
He was convicted of conspiracy to commit the Tate/LaBianca murders, carried out by members of the group at his instruction. He was found guilty of the murders themselves through the joint-responsibility rule, which makes each member of a conspiracy guilty of crimes his fellow conspirators commit in furtherance of the conspiracy's object

Know what? Screw that idea. I'll drink my scotch and enjoy it thank you.
As one person said already, it's not like these distilleries have the say on this matter, why hurt the people who depend on the sales of the scotch to make a living? Many boycotts end up being nothing more than a fanatical statement that hurts someone unintended rather than the source of the problem. Here, I point that by attempting a boycott, you are doing nothing more than attempting (indirectly) to instill terror in the lives of the distillery workers and liquor distributor employees by threatening their sources of income. There is no justification in taking out anger on innocent people.
I also fail to see why the nation of Scotland should bear the cost of keeping a convicted terrorist alive and reasonably pain-free for the last year of his life and then bear the cost of a funeral. I also fail to see why our "boycotting" scotch will have any beneficial effect towards this cause. The guy will die anyway (given), and the citizens of Scotland don't have to pay for his death now. Win-Win.
So thank you, no. I'll continue to drink and enjoy my scotch, knowing that I'm helping assure the well-being and way of life of some family in Scotland who may have lost a loved one on that flight, or who may not be as fortunate to stand on a soapbox and preach about right or wrong as I am here in the US.

Celebrations in Tripoli. A hero's welcome. Yeah, that was a good idea. They should have sent him back with a hidden "present".
BTW, boycotting scotch and even boycotts in general are never a great way to make a point. The general wave of public opinion is usually effective on it's own, as much as it can be. It's too late to do anything about the release of the terrorist but not too late to send follow up messages.
We live in a world run by morons following a consensus generated by a committee based on polls taken from people who know nothing about the issues except what they hear on the Daily Show.

The vast majority of oil used by the US is not from Islamic fundamentalists.
Boycotts seldom have any effect anyway. They can only work if everyone boycotts and keeps boycotting. See how well embargoes and sanctions work.

I have to agree with MCS and the Admiral and the best course of action is to keep our perspective on this issue and humor is a pretty good way to do just that.
Having said that, I suggest we have gotten so PC over the past years that this type of thing happens - I doubt this would have happened during my grandfather's generation.

I don't want to start an argument here BUT, I get so sick and tired of being told that "We forget that were at war". It seems to me that as much as the wars have set this country back (human and financial wise) nobody can forget that were at war. Most likely the only person that is trying to forget that were at war is the guy that went running back to Crawford with his tail between his legs.
Hopefully we can get this thread back to some low brow humor.

I would look at the guys that I work with except a lot of them including myself were laid off when gas hit $4.50 a gallon last summer. I do agree with you on one thing, we do need to take a good look around. Everybody needs to let go of their political views for a few minutes and take a good look at all of the crap going on around here.

That's it. I'm boycotting being "sick and tired". From now on I'm only "lively and energetic"!
Looking at your avatar I'd doubt that you could get any more lively.

I didn't mean boycott drinking Scotch. I meant boycott buying Scotch until the terrorist is dead.
That means drink it if you have it or if it's giving to you as a gift...
Geez! Did you think I was some whacko? Wait! Don't answer that!

Side note that I heard on the way into work today.
Gadhafi will be coming to NYC for a UN meeting in Sept. He owns a 4.4 acre estate in NJ where he will be staying. The 4.4 acre 5.5 million dollar estate is not taxed as it is treated like an embassy.
His next door neighbor pays $60,000 a year in property taxes. I bet he's a happy camper.
As for his visit, I wounder how many of my tax dollars will be spent on his security.
BTW - I hope this ends soon as I only have two bottles of scotch left! :D

I'd really like to find a way to boycott having my hard-earned money being splurged on someone else. Spent on necessities, yes. National security, yes. Sick, homeless and abused, yes. Law enforcement, yes.
Luxuries and tax breaks, buy your own! There's a box of cigars I've been drooling over and I could get it if you'd just get your hand out of my pocket. Or, while your hand is down there ..... :)
Oops, sorry for the threadjacking. ;s

National security, yes.
Well, think about the idea that that expenditure basically is national security. While giving Khadaffi a tax-break feels lame, it's absolutely pocket-lint on chump-change next to what we'd be spending if we pissed him off and had to send the army after him.
Ounce of prevention, you know?
