I left my cigar cutter in my girlfriend's car... which means no smoking until next Monday
I am almost tempted to take a knife and start slicing

You only have one Cigar cutter? Then go for the knife.

Been waiting to invest in a better one. I have a cheapo guillotine cutter.

Man today's Cigarmonster deal of a Xikar cutter and 5 cigars for 29.98 would have been perfect for you :(

I've used a knife once or twice to slice the cap off, works quite well when you don't have a cutter handy.

You can make a punch in a cigar with just about anything.

I just sliced through a RyJ #2. I shed a tear while doing it, but it tasted great none the less :)

Almost on-the-money!
Vadim, you need to develop a careful thumbnail technique. I can get a better opening more quickly and easily than any cutter I've seen and the manual process is a pleasurable part of the broader cigar experience for me- I get to "meet" my stogie before I smoke it. Since I developed this technique, it's all I ever use, except for torpedo/figurado-style heads (on which I need to get through filler). For those, I use a $4 double-guillotine cutter that's always in my pocket.
I enjoy the aesthetic of a perfectly-executed cut, but even if I didn't have my thumbnail method, I don't think I'd let the unavailability of my preferred cut keep me from enjoying a cigar.
Good luck finding a happy solution!

That steak knife did horrible things to the wrapper though :( I was picking out leaves from my mouth for the first few minutes

:r :r Been there, done that. In a pinch, I use a very sharp paring knife to score the wrapper where I'd normally cut it and then I flip the cap off with my thumb or finger.

If I don't have my cutter handy, I just use my pocket knife and just score the cap. You can then lift the piece of the cap off. It will look like a punch cut.

What, you don't have any teeth?
You don't have $2.50 to get a cheapie cutter at the local Book World?
Sorry to say it, but if you really wanted a cigar, you'd find a way.

Punch a hole in the cap with a Bic pen. This works in an emergency.
