View Full Version : Andre the Giant - The Greatest Drunk on Earth

I thought this was a great article with some fantastic stories. Makes me proud to be his namesake.

The big man loved two things: wrestling and booze—mostly booze—and his appetites were of mythic proportion.

First, consider the number 7,000. It’s an important number, and a rather scary one considering its context, which is this—it has been estimated that Andre the Giant drank 7,000 calories worth of booze every day. The figure doesn’t include food. Just booze.

"For most of us, two liters of vodka means a one-way ticket to Blackout Island aboard the good ship Regurgitania."

119 beers in six hours. 500 pounds.
In the height of my drinking career at 250 pounds I could only do half that (pound for pound) and I drank with lots of pride and 25 years of daily practice.
They didn't call me a drunkard though. :r

There is an element of sadness in this story...

... after all, with only one more beer, he would've been able to claim 5 cases.

A missed opportunity the likes of which may never return.

On a serious note, there is. He was was in alot of pain in the last years of his life and he was really tired of being as large as he was. He always wished to be normal sized. When doctors in Japan told him he wouldn't live long past 40 years old, he decided to live life to the fullest.

If I was told that I wouldn't live much past 40, I'd drink a lot too.

He was supposedly in great pain at WMIII too. He scared the crap out of Vince McMahon b/c he threatened to not go out to the ring b/c of the pain. But he suffered through and made what is now one of the most famous WWF/E matches of all time.

This is one of my favorite "Andre the Giant" stories (I may not have every detail correct, but it's basically correct). Andre got involved in an incident on the road with two other guys in an another car. The guys in the other car had what we call today "road rage". Andre got out of his car and flipped the other car up-side down, got back in his car and left. When the police arrived the two men in the turned over car claimed "An angry giant turned our car over". The two men were taken to jail to sober up.

Speaking of Princess Bride, I've got a friend who was in charge of security for Twister. He got in a dust up with Dread Pirate Roberts himself.
