View Full Version : Cool iPhone/touch Apps, what do you like?

I've found a few that I really like, Fluid 2 and the Koi Pond are all zenlike and relaxing.
There's an app called CoolFacts and it's free and neat. Geek facts, kind of like a virtual outhouse of useless knowledge, but fun to read.
I use a medical thing called I.T. to track my doctor stuff.
The Weather Channel, Google Earth, iHandy Level, Olive Tree Bible NKJV and a bunch of other stuff I use daily are very useful.

What do you guys use, enjoy, like, or suggest?

TrackerLite (To keep track of all those incoming packages)
Stanza (for reading)
craigsphone
checkbook

A couple I like that haven't been mentioned:
pic2shop - you take a picture of an item's barcode and it brings back Amazon reviews of the product. Worked great when I was shopping for a coffee maker last weekend at Target.

Pixelpipe - easily upload photos/videos/blog posts to dozens of sites at once like Twitter, Facebook, blogspot, etc ....

Grocery Gadget - make a grocery list.

PandoraBox - searches the app store for apps that are on sale/made temporarily free by the creators.

Shazam, good for when you hear a song and you can't remember the name or who sings it...Shazam will listen, send it off and you will get the song and artist back.

What's the IT medical program do that you mentioned?
It's called "Illness Tracker". It's to take daily notes on my condition, meds, doc visits, everything. It's excellent, but it could do so much more.
They're on the right track though. It's very useful for me.

I'm going to look into some of these other apps that everyone mentioned (hence why I made the thread).
The grocery list thing sounds great.
Thanks for all the help so far, guys. :)
Keep them coming!!!

The following are the apps I use the most:

Pandora - Must have for music lovers. This app gets more of a workout than all other app on my phone put together.
The Weather Channel - Current weather maps and even video forecasts.
ESPN Scorecenter - Set up your own scoreboards.
Flixster - Movie times, info, locations and trailers.
Google - Search internet by voice (for those of us without a 3GS).
Google Earth
Currency - Quickly convert those pesky Euros to dollars.
Shazam - Name that tune. Works really well.
Skype
Yelp - Restaurant locator and review service.
Bloomberg - More detailed stocks and financial news service.

Oh yes. This saved us on a recent trip.
We normally put the baby to sleep listening to Classical music.
I have an iPod in her room ready to go for the night.

We didn't bring it on vacation, so I opened the app, chose a Mozart song, and the app did the rest. Used it every night next to the Pack N Play.

Check out the Remote app if you listen to music on your PC a lot. The app allows you to control the music that is playing on iTunes on your PC with your iphone. I used it while out on the patio to control the music playing in the house. It's great.

I looked this up and resurrected it for some more ideas.
I absolutely love my iphone. It totally owns me. The more I use it, the more useful it is.

Anyways...
I'm sending this link to my beautiful, incredible, brilliant, goddess of a girlfriend (http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=21686&page=3) so she can check out the suggestions.
If you guys have any more good stuff, we'd like to try them.

Oh yeah, we had another thread about the Navigon turn by turn gps app.
I got it, I totally love it, and they just upgraded it to add turn by turn with street names. It so kicks that ass off of my old gps, there's no comparison.
I'm gonna have to go see if I can find that thread and update it, too.

Thanks guys!!! :)

Been having fun with a few new ones lately:

TuneWiki - lyrics on all your music in your phone/touch as well as multiple radio stations. Super wicked!

MiniGore - an addictive one-dimensional game that is so much fun to play. Run and gun!

Monopoly World - for all your Monopoly on the go needs. Price is a little steep at $5 but tons of playability. I think its worth it.

Layar - hard to explain what it does so I'll just say read the description. GREAT for urban/metro areas. Not sure how it would work in more rural locations.

Ok I have downloaded some more apps and will give them a try. I think I have solved the sync problem from outlook to iphone. I was trying to sync from my laptop to my iphone to get my calendar and my contacts. Kept getting duplicate contacts and then some of the contacts would lose one phone number (usually the mobile) in outlook. I already use gmail for my mail and google calendar (so I can sync them between laptop and desktop using google calendar sync). Went online and did some research and found a sync deal called Nuevasync that uses microsoft exchange server (so if you use an exchange server already this wont work cause the iphone only lets you have one exchange account on the phone) and set it to sync my contacts and calendar and it worked like a charm. But if you do this the best way is to upload your contacts to gmail contacts and make sure they are right. Cause when you set up the account for nuevasync it is best if you let it erase all the contacts and calendar events on the phone and then sync them from google. If anyone needs more info PM me and I will try to help you.

G G
10-16-2009, 12:56 PM
Oh yeah I forgot to mention that you can use nuevasync to get push email too, but since I don't care for push (battery drain) I set it to off in the phone.

AT&T my wireless- lets you check out your account.

AP mobile- for news

Epocrates- for the pillheads on my job, it lets me identify different kinds of pills and lots of other things.

Geico- pay my insurance and view cards

It's strange that it no longer shows on Navigon's website. I saw it there the day I posted.
Basically it is supposed to help to find alternate routes if there is traffic congestion on the route that it would normally find. I haven't purchased the add-on yet, so I am not sure how well it works. I never bought it for my TomTom because it was an annual fee and I don't use my gps that often.

That sounds incredibly cool, Vic.
I don't think anyone really wants to watch me lying on the couch or sitting in my chair, but I can definately see where it'd be cool.

Yesterday I bought the Traffic Live update for my Navigon GPS app.
It saved me a solid hour by taking me around airport traffic in Pittsburgh yesterday.
Worked flawlessly, and makes the Navigon app that much more incredible.
Lisa and I both raved about how awesome it is and how much we love it the entire trip.
If there's one app that's completely and totally blown me away value-wise and by the way it works, it's been Navigon.

I've also gone through a few cases recently.
Bought the Noel and Eternity series from morething. Gorgeous cases.
The metallic paint completely defeats the phone's GPS reception and cell signal. Screwed up Lisa's phone and my phone both. Made them pretty much worthless.
Good news is that I wrote morething yesterday and they immediately wrote me back with an admission and offer to send me some different cases. All I gotta do is send the cases to them in Hong Kong, which I will eventually do.
I just traded beads for an Otterbox Defender case (http://www.amazon.com/OtterBox-Defender-Case-iPhone-Yellow/dp/B000XSBMWY) for my phone and an Incase Bamboo Slider in eggplant color (http://www.men-access.com/bamboo-slider-by-incase-for-iphone-3g/)for Lisa's iphone.
I'm hoping those two work as well as the reviews suggest, and don't ruin my reception.
Thanks for resurrecting the thread, Vic. :tu
Keep us on top of any more cool stuff you find, please.

Oh, last thing...
For anyone who has been using the God-awful ESPN sports app for their scores and so forth. Sportacular is awesome. It works infinately better, and when you close out the app it returns right to where you left off, unlike ESPN's crappy app.
I'd think ESPN would really try to do better. Everything ESPN is really awful. It's a shame, cause I love my ESPN. :)

Adrian,
Like I just said, I bought it yesterday.
I played hell trying to find out how to buy it. Turned out I had to buy it from inside the Navigon app in my iphone.
I found it amond "more options", then clicked on it, paid for it through itunes (on the fly) and it was immediately activated.
Totally cool, and it worked great. Was well worth the $29.99. I wish I'd have bought it when it was 20 bucks. I just never thought I'd use it.
Go figure? :)

That sounds incredibly cool, Vic.
I don't think anyone really wants to watch me lying on the couch or sitting in my chair, but I can definately see where it'd be cool.

Scott, I'm psyched about this one, keeping in touch with family and friends far away while on the road, going to herfs, all sorts of cool stuff. Imagine being at the beach on vacation and being able to stream all the hotties back over the net:dr:dr

Imagine having 3-4 guys at a big herf all sending different streams over the net so that those not in attendance can watch the festivities, to me that would nice!

I'm not sure if his was previously mentioned, but I downloaded Mobile Air Mouse the other day.
Sometimes I hook my computer up to the TV to watch something. Only problem was I had to get up to play/pause. With this, I can do it from across the room.
Made my wife laugh at the nerd that I am, but that is ok.

I haven't bought it yet. I always seem to have some trouble with Navigon. Really slow. It's much faster for me to use google maps and then just find where I am going. I wonder if it just works better on a 3GS than a 3G.
Sorry that I didn't mention it was an in-app purchase.

I don't think you'll have reception problems with either.
My Brother-in-law has the Otter case and loves it. He dropped his 3G and the screen turned white. Had to buy a new phone (Apple store claimed the water sensor was pink)
I have an Incase Slider (not bamboo) and it does a good job of protecting. It fits really snug and is a little difficult to get off.

I've heard from some pretty reliable sources that 4.0 will have multi-tasking.
That would be pretty damned cool..... but, having two of the wrong app open may bring most non-S devices to their knees... maybe even some of the Ss.

That would be odd seeing as how Palms WebOS has had multitasking for a year now and 2 apps wont do that. Hell the verizon version can have 50 apps open at once. Sprints only handles 13apps at once which apparently is a memory issue.

From what I understand the harware on the device as in processor and memory is similar.

Still waiting to see who will have the first true Flash supported browser which will allow streaming sites like Justin.tv to work over the network not wifi. Winmo has skyfire but that is handled by proxy server. I think the first phone that has true flash browser will be a media geeks dream, or at least mine.

Streaming is just too much geek for the tube to handle right now.
The infrastructure only exists for just so much data transfer.
It's not the device that's holding back the flash, it's the infrastructure.
I would think it'd be a race between carriers to get the infrastructure in place to support streaming, because like you said, media geeks would RUN to that provider overnight.
You could tether and run your whole home off of one cellphone.
No more cable bill, no more internet bill, just a cell phone bill.
I don't ever see the cell carriers giving us that kind of pipe. It'd put them out of their own business, being that most cell places sell cable and tv, too.
A monster would have to step up and do this.
It's what Google has been positioning themselves to do for the last five years. Ad driven free cellphones with media galore.
They'll own it all, and it'll be the end of paying three or four bills as we know it.
Thats gonna create a big, big mess.

Dont be so sure brother. I have not got this phone yet, because there are questions as to whether the browser will in fact support justin.tv or the other sites that stream live tv sports over the web. The indication and rumor is it will.
http://tv.adobe.com/watch/flash-platform-in-action/flash-player-101-on-the-palm-pre-

I dont want to get into a network debate, but I dont think ATT will allow it as the network likely couldnt take the strain of all Iphone users streaming live tv over their phones.

It appears it is comming, and my geek ass will be all over the first device that does it. Skyfire works okay for me know for watching hockey games and sports in the car while driving around, but its glitchy.

I appreciate the Iphone, and would get one if it would stream live media, I have been waiting to see who the will get the first phone to do this. Android has been promising this stuff for over a year and never delivered plus I hate android all fluff no filler. So if Palm delivers I may go back to them after a 3 year layoff.

Good point Vic, but we were more talking about Flash content from websites. What you are refering to is brodcasting your own feeds via orb I am guessing. Or Watching others Orb feeds? What we were talking about is going to flash based sites like Justin.tv or some of the european sites to watch streamed content by flash for free. No phone is doing this right now. When it does occur it will open up a lot of free media possibilities.

I was more refering to the free side of things that a flash browser would create. Most smart phones regardless of OS can do the Orb things. Always been to lazy to set up my own Orb feeds though. Maybe I should start doing this.

Mobile browsers have been slow to come to getting flash capabilities, since it's everybody I have to point the finger at Adobe.I know they have had a contentious relationship with Apple at best.

At this point I'm actually more interested in seeing support for Silverlight in mobile browsers. I know Netflix uses it for streaming movies, and I believe Hulu also does tho I'm not sure about that.

Everything I'm hearing about the apple tablet is that it's supposed to be some kind of multimedia powerhouse, so maybe it will support flash.

Ahbroody

I am sure it will. No way apple is going to launch that thing without flash. I always say Apple may ram you in the ass on price, but you can never say they bring a bad product or a poorly built product. They make awesome stuff. I still want to see what it will be like in terms of phone. I have read a lot of stuff back and forth on what it will do. Some are saying yes phone support some are saying no. There is always google voice to fill that void. I am wondering if the tablet will have a 3g wireless card built into it or a USB port so you can pick your carrier. I know Sprint has 4g/wimax up and running in some areas and expanding to more this year. That would be slick. I just wonder if they would be willing to install a card like that locking it in on one carrier. My wife is a teacher and a Mac whore though and is pretty geeked to see what the tablet is going to do and have.

The down side is I just dont want to carry a device that big. I like the MID(mobile internet device)/portable mini computer concept and some of the ones coming out are pretty small and double as a phone. They are still very large in comparison to most smart phones and I think it would look odd carrying a small brick in your pocket. OOO the comments. I really just want a phone no bigger then an Iphone that is a multimedia beast. Full flash, awesome browser, with awesome coverage. I guess thats why I am waiting still to get a new handset. I want to see if Palm actually comes through next month or if it ends up being only particial support and controlled by them what it will do.

I would love to see the next Iphone do full flash supported browser, but I just dont see ATT willing to let Iphone users have that seeing as how they were already threatening to charge power users more cause of the strain on the network. I wonder if the rumored ATT 4G with alleged Verizon ties will allow this? The one thing Verizon knows how to do is offer cool stuff and then rape you for using it :r

If I can access my main rig remotely, I can stream flash all I want and stream all I want and access anything I'd ever need.

Who is geeked for tomorrow?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/26/mcgraw-hills-ceo-confirms-apple-tablet-debuting-tomorrow/
I kind of wonder how they are going to tie Ebooks into the existing Iphone based UI/OS. Atleast its implied the tablet will be running a version of the Iphone OS. This part has me sad. I was really hoping the tablet would be running leopard as I was considering it. Maybe they are jazzing up the Iphone OS/UI?

I have been holding off on a new phone to see if apple was realising a new UI/OS for its Iphone or to see if a new carrier was comming. Hoping this is also announced tomorrow. Funny I am a windows mobile guy, but I am excited about tomorrow. I do still use my wifes old titanium book for making movies and screwing around.

I do still use my wifes old titanium book for making movies and screwing around.I'm very geeked. there's been so many rumors it's hard to say what's likely and what's not.

I heard that a Verizon Iphone was going to be announced. Then I heard that the tablet would be announced, that it would have 3G connectivity and that Verizon would be the carrier. And on and on and on.

I highly doubt that both of these are true, if the Tablet has 3G connectivity and the provider is Verizon, I don't think we'll see a Verizon Iphone announced as well. But you never know. I did hear that a 4.0 version of the iphone OS is being announced though, that is supposed to be a definite. So who knows what OS the tablet will run.

I saw a different version of that interview with McGraw Hill as well, where he was saying that the tablet will run the iphone OS and that all of the iphone apps will be transferrable to it. I don't know how this would work, if the apps were developed for a screen the size of the Iphone wouldn't they look awful on a much larger screen?

Ahbroody
01-26-2010, 09:36 PM
As to the larger screen I didnt think that was a factor as much as resolution tends to be the factor. That said I am not sure.

I would really like to see a jazzed up UI for 4.0. I have this debate with my Iphone friends all the time. When Iphone OS came out it was without a doubt the sexiest UI and OS out. Since then though I really think Palm has done a great job with its WebOS and Android has basically replicated the look of the Iphone OS as has Winmo to a large extent with 6.5. I really wanted to see Apple come out with a OS that mimics the desktop experience.

I will be checking engadget all day tomorrow for the updates and breaking news.

Vic, I read a couple pages on that. One, the current apps can run in their current format as kind of "sticky notes" on the tablet desktop. The can cascabe or be slid around and place, with multiple apps open at once.
The OS 4.0 rollup is supposed to add this functionality, among a number of other things.
The tablet will just let us use most of the updates.
Or so they say... ;)
The announcement is at 1:00 EST, I wish I could watch it live.

Vic, I have a dual tuner Hauppauge PVR 500 pci card if you wanna try it. It's brand new off RMI. I'll never use it.
It doesn't support HD, I don't believe, but it'd be a costless trial for ya.
I have the remotes and stuff somewhere, too.
I'd love to see how it works out for you.
Here's the stuff you need to stream HD. (http://www.amazon.com/Hauppauge-1192-HVR-1950-External-Recorder/dp/B00198MYB0/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227044215&sr=1-10)
I checked out RDM+ and talked to Gainey. It's just like Logmein Ignition.
I previewed logmein pro2. It is absolutely awesome. 30 bucks for the app, 65 bucks a year for the subscription, allows you access to one remote computer. You can add additional computers for an increased fee, like your work machine and laptop and stuff, if so desired.
It literally does everything, including file transfer and streaming sound and video.
It looks like that's the way I'll go, especially if the tablet is released.
It'd solve everything. Then if I wanted to stream my tv, I just add the tuner I linked up there.
I'm not so into tv, especially since I can get it all on the intersne, but I might do that sometime down the road.
The coolness is that I can do everything from my phone as from my desk.
I can also grab my desk here from my laptop, if I so desire. That's in with the pro2 subscription. It goes by how many computers you wish to access, but you can access that computer from anywhere, at any other computer.
That kicks ass, especially since I just use my laptop as a poor mirror extension of my main rig
One other thing...
I use three monitors on my desk. Logmein has multiple monitor support.
I could find nothing it would not do, and I beat on it like it owed me money. :D
Pro2 is free for a month (or 120 hours). Try it out. You can check the features with your laptop or any other computer. I sat here and ran my main rig with my laptop to see how it worked, that way I didn't have to pay 30 bucks for the iPhone app. :tu

Nope no phone service. However there is the google voice work around. Not sure if it will work on Iphone/pad, but the unit has blue tooth so you do have the ability to get a google voice account and use it as a phone that way.

I have never said this before but apple beyond droped the ball on this one. No flash are you focking joking? http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/apples-ipad-keeping-adobe-flash-away-from-your-couch/. A device centered around the multimedia experience with no focking browser flash support? Did Apple not look at the Stats at just how much flash content is on the web? At 499 if it had flash support I would have been all over this device. You could have tied it to google voice I bet and had one kick ass MIDI. Voice, movies, flash media. OOOO but wait its tied to ATT network and we know ATT doesnt want flash support on its network because of the strain it would place on the network if available.

It would appear no multi tasking for Ipod either as this unit did not have multi tasking. It amazes me that Palm WebOs has multitasking but apple fails. ? Maybe its comming.

However I believe Vic will possibly be able to use this as he thought about. Because Iwork will be available. So it would appear http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/appple-announces-iwork-for-ipad/

I'm with ya, brother. It's pretty much the maxiPad.
Coupled with logmein, it'd kick ass and I think it'd still be great for Vic at work, but no phone. No multitasking.
I'm clueless. I guess they thought grab some of that Amazon Kindle money? Nice movies?
It's just a big iPod Touch.
I'm sure I'll order the 16gb when they're ready and feel it out and see what I can do with it. If it's as cool as I hope, I'll get the $829 3G version after that and give the 16gb wifi to my daughter.
I don't even have 3G where I live, but I do everywhere I go.

Nope no phone service. However there is the google voice work around. Not sure if it will work on Iphone/pad, but the unit has blue tooth so you do have the ability to get a google voice account and use it as a phone that way.

Not being phone capable doesn't really matter I don't think. You're not going to be lugging it around to use for that purpose in any event, my phone is always with me anyway.

I can't think of any reason using google voice on it wouldn't work in any event. Those calls go out as data over the 3g or wifi, and I don't know how anyone would even be able to know or care that you were using either google voice or ribbit (google voice lookalike) to make calls. People have been using Ipod Touches connected to a MiFi to do just this for awhile now without incident.

Great article Vic. I guess flash wont be comming anytime soon. Or will it?......

I cant really agree with the authors point of view. To me it is written from a fanboys perspective. He seems to ignore the fact that apple is notorious for controling all aspects of its hardware and software and will only bend under extreme pressure. An example being when they finally had to switch to intel based processors because of powerPC issues. They held on as long as they could before giving in. I still wonder if deep down they knew when they switched over to X86 architecture there OS would end up being able to be hacked to work on PCs. I have a dual boot on my Acer netbook running OSX. I have gotten some odd looks from apple owners at Starbucks in the past and even a few questions on how I did that.

The article points out how apple doesnt like how adobe controls flash out one side of his mouth while ignoring that apple will let no one release any hardware product with its OS besides apple. They control all aspects of their OS and product. The app store controls what you can install on the Iphone and unless you jailbreak it you cant install other product(from what my buddies with them tell me). If you want the apple OS you buy apple product, and apple charges a good penny for that product. It is a high quality product though no argument there. That seems to be okay with the author.

Adobe controlling all aspects of flash development even though its open to all, thats just wrong. Although it appears as though apple is trying to develop its own apple based alternitive to flash. Why? so they can continue to control all aspects of the apple OS interface and hardware. http://www.neowin.net/news/adobe-calls-out-apple-for-lack-of-flash-support

I had never even looked into the issue with apple before you posted this. I appreciate the link. In all honesty I dont support this. It smacks of an attempt to control all aspects of everything it touches. I really

If Palm delivers flash browser support as promised next month by adobe, then I think they will start to gain substantial market share. Adobe went out of its way to work with Palm in the development of flash support for its WebOs and would have done the same for Apple. The difference being Apple would not have owned and controlled it still and as they have shown they dont like that. Apple makes a lot of money controlling all aspects of everything with their products. Apple would never go to adobe for help. This will only change if demand becomes high enough and as the article you pointed out showed I guess enough dont care or are willing to accept this short comming

If you need something for your car to hold your iPhone, this is an item I've been using for about a year and a half:
http://i388.photobucket.com/albums/oo326/alley00p/Misc%20Pix/InnocaseTravelKit.jpg

It can mount to your dashboard, windshield or A/C vents (I have mine mounted to the vents) and it will accomodate a plain iPhone or an iPhone using one of their Innocases (which I use with the belt mount). Look here at Seidio's website (http://www.seidioonline.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=CK17SIPH3GC06)for details... :D

The travel kit sells for 49.95, charges your phone while you are using it (GPS is great here) and it has a extra USB charger adapter on the side to recharge items like cameras or mp3 players. :tu

I have a couple gooseneck mounts, Charlie. They're awesome.
I got a dual charger that works with the usb cables so Lisa and I (or my daughter and I) can charge our iPhones or Touches simutaneously.
I also installed an rf modulator setup in the Envoy so I can plug my ipod or phone or touch right into the stereo, because it doesn't have a 5mm jack for aux.
Works great and sounds awesome. :)

On the app front, I found it fun to run iseismometer while I'm playing tunes over my phone's speaker. Especialy if it's bass-heavy stuff. It's fun. :D
It's far more geeky than visualizations. Plus Bigfoot can't sneak up on you. That's just and added benefit. :tu

I haven't used Orb a lot because I've been at home. I used logmein to remotely add all my files to Orb while I was in Ohio a couple weeks ago.
I also used logmein to share pics on my home computer while I was out there at family day.
Since I got Orb and logmein, I gave my daughter my laptop and sold hers. I couldn't be more happy knowing I'll never have to lug a laptop around again. Now I'm just waiting on the iPads to roll out. I'm going to grab a wireless model until the 3G becomes available, then I may go that way. I'm not sure yet. I might just be happy with the wireless only model, but I want to get one for my daughter and my girlfriend, too. I need to check them out first, so I'll just play with the base model for a bit.
I upgraded my wireless router this week so I have the pipe to take care of all the wireless everything here, and to give me the range to work all over the property. Now I just have to get the shop cleaned out and get the heat on and I can get back to work. :tu

Doyle, opinions are like...so take this for what it's worth....But I tried weatherbug, and liked the Weather Channel app better. Not sure what is available on the Droid, opposed to the Iphone, but it may be worth a look.

Being new to the whole Iphone experience, I spent a ton of time looking at appshopper. com and just sorting through and looking for different things, plus reading through this thread. Again, not sure how well anything translates to the Droid, but seems a good place to start.

A few of the ones I use have already been mentioned, Shazam, epocrates, eBay, FaceBook, and WSJ.

Some others I appreciate having are:

FlightAware - punch in the flight number or the tail number of a plane and you can track it on a live map.

Park 'n Find - uses the GPS to capture your current location. When you want to get back to that place, it will guide you to site on a map. Used it down at Tropicana Field in December to ind my rental car with no problem. Accurate to within about 10 feet of actual location.

TweetDeck - great little app that runs just like the full-blown version for your computer. Will follow feeds for Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and MySpace (gag). Cool feature is that you can tap in a message once, including location and pictures, and choose one or multiple accounts to send the message to.

Keeper - password maintenance app that also lets you save info to your computer. Gotcha is the computer version is $29.00.

Barnes & Noble

Convert - great app to convert measurements. Includes topics such as Area, Computer, Currency, Energy, Force, Pressure, Speed.

Since I have photography as a hobby, I also find DOF (Depth of Field) Master and SmugShot to be useful. SmugShot lets you upload photos you've taken with the iPhone right to your SmugMug account.

Ambiance, for those with trouble sleeping like me. Countless "white noise" type options to mix and match, plus fade out options for the sleep noise gnerator, and fade in options for your alarm sound. I currently use my own rainstorm, windstorm, train on the tracks noise to fall asleep to, and we wake to a Chinese gong that slowly increases in volume over 45 minutes so we don't get jarred awake. Well worth the 99 cents it costs

Can't really make guarantees for you. I can tell you it works fine although I very often need to get out of bed for a little while :). It keeps a graph of your whole night and just shows it as being awake a while.

I'd ask the developer if and how he got the videos
on the iPhone. Without knowing more
it sounds like they are saying the hardware is capable of handling those videos, which doesn't necessarily mean they will work on the phone. A while back it was reported that a developer had gotten the 3gs to run 720p video. Yes, the hardware can handle that, but the firmware on the phone doesn't allow it yet so it's really a moot point. There is a video on YouTube of a iPhone 3GS playing 1080p. Not that it is that useful on a smaller screen. I found a application called Air Sharing that looks to be exactly what I'm looking for. I'll try it and report back if anyone is interested. I think it is fair to guess the developer may have a "broken" phone. Which without stirring up any controversy about whether braking is good or bad, if you have done the 3.0.3 update, this is truly a moot point.

Much like other things that can be done on the Iphone, it can't be done in the parameters of Apple.

Angry Birds - Wicked fun physics based game. Use a slingshot that chucks birds at objects to get to the pigs. The graphics, sound and gameplay is beyond reproach for a cartoon-y game. Love it. :tu
Olive Tree NKJV Bible - They just added a bunch of features in the latest update that makes it very easy to search and a took tons of bugs out. It's very useful now.
MLB.com at Bat 2010 - Streaming ballgames. Have to have the mlb.tv subscription, but it's well worth the money if you love ball.
Speedtest - By speedtest.net. Good for checking jacked wifi to get a good connection speed.
5-0 Radio Pro - Scanner app with a zillion feeds. Good if you're hiding from the cops.
Sportacular - Quick scores and boxes. The best sports app I've found.
The Weather Channel - Nice, clean weather with radar.
DoodleJump - It's just fun. I've long since grown tired, but it was fun for waiting rooms.
VoicePlus - Voice changer. Fun for messing with the kids.
TFLN - Mindless drivel, lots of hilarity in there. It's Texts from Last Night. User submitted humorous texts. Very adult and very tacky.
UPS - Check your tracking numbers.
USA Today - Great news app. I have always loved USA Today, so it fits perfect. It's very well done, too.
Goby - The coolest "What's going on here where I'm stuck?" app I've seen yet. It pulls up tons of things to do in the area you're in. Even obscure stuff like live music at the winery. Kind of a "local entertainment" newspaper page for wherever you are. It's just plain cool.

Forgot that using 3g for data would probably incur data roaming charges, not sure how that works out of the country.

As far as I know, skype iphone app has always worked over wifi, but whether there are charges or not I don't know.

I don't use it, I use ICall, which is free. One of my brothers lives in the mountains and I get no cell service at their house, so I just use Icall if I need to make an outgoing call over their Wifi network.

ICall lets you use Wifi to make voip calls, but not to a computer directly to a house phone or cell phone. much better than having to talk to somebody sitting at a computer. Downside is the calls are limited to 5 minutes I think, but you can call right back if you go over that so really not an issue for me.

So if I understand correctly then I can make free skype to skype calls if I have wifi? I would just need to have the person I'm trying to call install skype.

Yes, or you could just sign up for a Skype account and buy some credit to use while on vacation. Skype's LD rates are generally much better than telco's. With Skype credit you can call from Skype directly to any land or mobile number as if you were using a normal phone for the dialing. The Skype app only works over wifi though, not wireless data. Probably a good thing since that would jack your data usage pretty quickly.

As for apps: AirVideo (http://www.inmethod.com/air-video/index.html;jsessionid=9E55B7741D05CE786E5A64DAF759 CC64) is absolutely brilliant.

Works on the latest iTouch as well as iPhone and iPad. Real time conversion and streaming off your computer for pretty much every media format your can think off: avi, mpg, mkv, wmv, etc. It's also bandwidth aware so it will scale back the video quality if you're connecting over 3G and internet instead of over your home wifi. The server software is free, the full client costs $2.99. This one app is making me lust after an iPad, so perfect for watching tv and movies on the deck with a cigar!!

The coolest app yet is Dragon Dictation. The uses for it never end. I'll use it more on my iPad later. I've thought of lots of ways I can use it, and I plan to write a few books soon. That'll make that a breeze.

I grabbed that one to show Lisa, she loves Sushi. I don't.
It's a super cool app, I can see where it'd be lots of fun.

I recently downloaded Aroundme. Say you're away from home and need a donut. You just open it up, either choose a category or type "donut" in the search, and bang. Donuts.
I know there's tons of ways to get this done, but vie been traveling a lot, and it makes it quick and easy to find whatever I need wherever I am. It's nice and clean and simile, too. No crap.
Then I can click on George's Donuts and there's directions in google maps. I wish it'd kick up the destination in Navigon, but I can get by.

I really like it and you'll see why at the end of my response. The same work can be done by hand but this is just plain faster. As far as accuracy, its more accurate than I can shoot put it that way. The processing power of the iphone/itouch lets this thing crank out crazy accurate numbers. I tend to do a lot of mixed-distance 'gong' shooting to practice hunting. I'll use the laser range finder to get a distance of say 335 yards, then plug all the info into iSnipe and adjust clicks as indicated. Never missed a gong shot since. As for doing it by manual calculation, well lets just say I've had to take up reloading due to the amount of ammo I was going through :)

Haven't had my iPhone for long, but for those of you into homebrewing, I picked up:

Great app that helps in recipe formulation, mashing, expected efficiency calculations, and can even categorize your recipe to the proper BJCP style if you're considering competition for your brew. Great app!

My favorite apps are:

Pandora
Shazam
Bump-easily share contact info between iphones
Photobucket-photo hosting
ESPN scorecenter
flixter-movie times
Photoshop mobile
engadget-high tech news
Skype
Remote-control iTunes from the phone
Units -quick unit conversion app
Facebook
Google
What's On?- TV channel listings. Can program your favorite shows and set up alerts to remind you of when they air.
Dragon Dictation-Speech to text software, and it works REALLY well as long as there isnt a lot of background noise. Unfortunately it doesnt recognize a pause as the end of a sentence, so you have to say period or exclamation point etc., but the app is great for texting while driving or if you cant text with both hands for whatever reason.

As for game:
Tower Madness
Cartoon Wars
Stick wars
I Dig It
Zynga live poker
Beer Pong
Toobz free
and my current addiction: ANGRY BIRDS

I tried Pocket Informant Lite.
It's an app that syncs with your google calendar and/or Toodledo and Microsoft Outlook.
You can merge a bunch of calendars or view them individually.
It's incredibly useful because I can merge my calendar, my daughter's, and my woman's and I can see what I'm supposed to be doing at a glance.
I liked the lite version so much that I ponied up the 13 bucks for the full calendar app.
This thing has removed so much confusion from my life that I can't even quantify it. I use it constantly, and I love it.
The Lite version is free. Google calendars is free. Give it a shot if you have any need to merge a bunch of calendars, whether it be family or work.
Did I say it's awesome? :D

Does skyfire work with hulu?Hulu won't allow browsers to display video on mobile phones. They want you to buy Hulu Plus... In order to get this to work you would have to have the browser set to some other kind of host -- not sure what that might do to the video feed (they may customize it for different browsers).

Found an app that is sure to be one of my favorites; Hop Stop.

You have to register your phone on Hop Stop, then activate, but it's free.

It has many large cities, and in my case New York is entered.

You use your current location, then enter your destination and it maps out your best subway or bus route.

The 3Gs and 4G have an app that allows you to hold the phone in different positions and actually see a compass pointing you to the station with the distance displayed.

I am headed to NYC and am pre-programming some of the trips that I have planned and simply save them for future reference.

Very cool app that is free.

just got my iphone 4 for Verizon yesterday and have two questions for you seasoned iphone users.

1.) Does the iphone have an app to shut down applications that are constantly running? For my droid I had something called Advanced Task Killer that would shut down apps and help save battery life.

2.) Is there a way to set my phone so I only receive signal on US towers? I work near the Canadian border and don't want to be getting nailed in roaming charges. I had to set my droid to home only towers and that saved me but so far I cant find a way to do it with the iphone.

Thanks

There may an app for Jailbroken phones to do them all at once, but otherwise, you have to do it one at a time. Leaving apps on isn't supposed to use much battery life. It just keeps them in the state you left them. Most aren't really running in the background.
Double click the home button, then hold down one of the icons on the bottom. When they start wiggling, press the red minus sign.

You can turn off data roaming. I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for, though. settings --> General --> Network --> Data Roaming.

Thanks for the info on the first question but for the second one I still want to be able to use my phones full capabilities. With the droid I was able to still use the internet and what not, it just wouldnt pick up mexican cell towers when I was working on the southern border.

Same here.
Have used in Mexico, Belize, Jamaica, Bahamas, Haiti, St. Maarten, St. Thomas and Puerto Rico to name a few.
Absolutely no issues.
In fact, out of our group of 6 recently on a cruise, i had the best reception.

To answer the roaming fees questions........YES........and not cheap.
Would use it for necessity only and not for kicks and giggles.
Next time will look to see if a SIM for the new iPhone 4 (much smaller) is available for international calling and data.

CigarNut
02-22-2011, 11:30 AM
Did you have to tell AT&T you were traveling? Were you charged roaming fees?Yes and Yes. My plan already had international calling included ("No Charge"). I added the "World Traveler" plan for $5.99/phone/month. This is pro-rated, so you only need to have it enabled for the time you are out of the country. (Used to be you had to have it enabled until all the charges came through, which could take 60-90 days sometimes...)

The World Traveler plan reduces the roaming charges that you pay in other countries. In some cases the reduction is a lot, in others not so much. You can get more info on the rates from the AT&T (or Verizon) web site or by calling them. The WT plan also includes free incoming text messages. Outgoing messages cost 50 cents each I think, or you can buy a plan (never have done that).

If you think you will be on the phone for more than a few minutes the WT plan is worth it.

We initially got the WT plan for emergencies in case our kids needed to get in touch with us. We kept on getting the WT plan for our international travel after repeated "drunk calling" our friends to tell them how much fun we were having :)

If you do not tell AT&T you are much more likely to spend a lot more money than you need to should you end up making any calls.

Also, make sure that "Data Roaming" is turned off. Unless you get a package for International Data, data roaming is very, very expensive. (So are the packages).

so I take it then that there is no option to have my phone hit home towers only like my old droid? Would it be best then to call Verizon and tell them that I will be working near the border and see if there is anyway to reduce charges?
