View Full Version : Anyone Own A Kindle?

I'm looking into buying a Kindle (http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Amazons-Wireless-Reading-Generation/dp/B00154JDAI/ref=amb_link_84770111_1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf). Looks like it is something I would really enjoy.
I'm not looking for testimonials - "My brother-in-law has one and he loves it". I'm looking for actual feedback and discussion on detailed features and usage from inmates who own one.
Thanks.

linky wasn't working...
Here LINKY POO (http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Amazons-Wireless-Reading-Generation/dp/B00154JDAI)..
My uncle has one and he travels a lot. He raves about how many books he can upload to it and how light it is. I'm not actually sure about the pro/con but IMHO I would imagine some people just like the feel of a real book but hate carrying so many around. The gf might be getting one for xmas since we take lots of trips.

Peter, my wife has one and she LOVES it. She actually bought the first one, then a newer one came out 5 months later and she got that. The newer one is thinner and has the ability to do audio.
Her only complaint with them is that they are not backlit. She got a little LED clip light though for times that she needs light and it works fine.
Has never had a problem with the wireless. Loves that there is no monthly or hidden fees. Once you buy something it stays available on Amazon so if you lose the Kindle, sell it, upgrade, whatever, all your content is still there.
We were both a little ticked that the newspaper subscriptions were so high, if it was lower I would have bought one too.
I see a lot of people with them on my travels too and talk to some of them. Have yet to run into anyone with one that doesn't love it.
I saw earlier someone mention it, if someone is "old school" and has to have the paperback or does a lot of book swapping, they wouldn't like it as much.

But the Kindle looks pretty cool, saves a $hitload of space, ability to annotate, search etc. that is impossible with hard copy.
So, why are you using email instead of snail mail? :hm

I've been looking at these pretty seriously. I like the feel of a book in my hands, but I do think these would be incredibly handy, especially on trips. Being able to take a little Kindle on an overseas trip versus four or five hardback books would be fantastic.
I worry somewhat about the proprietary nature of it, though, and wonder what might be coming down the pipeline.
Like Peter, I'd also love to hear more first hand accounts.

OK seroius question regarding the Kindle. What is the availability for older books? Is the available content current publications only, or can a person, for example, down load a copy of something written 50 years ago?

Funny you should say that... I left the kindle at home while traveling last week and brought along instead the wee iTouch I bought off Shilala.
For laying in bed at home with a book, I prefer the kindle. But for reading in the Girl Cave, garage, ladies room, on the plane, in the car, hotel room... I much prefer the iTouch running the kindle app. Smaller, lighter, quieter (no page turn button clicks) than the kindle, AND is stupid fast at checking email!
Kindle apps I use on the iTouch are much easier to access and change than on the kindle itself, from something simple like font size adjustment to shopping new books.
Kindle pwns the iTouch for battery life and the bigger screen, and Whispernet is available where wifi is not (at least in Seattle) but... remember Kindle has no backlight power drain, and checking email or shopping books over their proprietary Whispernet is an agonizingly slow process. Part of that is the processor limitation, but still it is quite frustrating.
Amazon will also only transfer to kindle format those books they sell or from publishers with whom they have agreements. They won't kindleize some of my old favorites available for free.
I'd send you the kindle to try out but I already passed it on to someone, dang it, however, imho you aren't missing a lot over an iphone/itouch.
Hope my two cents helps! :)

Hey Peter, KenS has two Kindles and is very knowledgeable about them. I would drop him a pm if you have any questions regarding them.
BTW, they are very awesome and I plan to buy one for my ol lady who loves to read.
Like Hal said, we have 2 of 'em. One of the original, and one of the newer version. Both are excellent. Amazing screen for reading outdoors ... no glare. Downloading books is nearly instantaneous. Highly recommended.
Best thing I can say about them is that within 5 minutes of reading, you completely forget you are using a "gadget". Just as emersive as a book :tu.

Ken is so right! That e-paper screen works much better outdoors in full sunlight than the itouch. Today I took a stab at reading some while at lunch outside with an Old Henry, but DAG! I had the little feller at max brightness to see it well enough to read comfortably.

I found the kindle took noticeably longer to forget I was using a gadget. It also took a few chapters for me to stop hearing the page turning button >click< every time. Still does. With the itouch it's just a light, silent page tap. Splitting hairs, I know. :)

For me, the iPhone/iPod Touch is a good companion device for the Kindle. If I'm traveling, or planning to do a lot of reading, the Kindle is perfect. Large screen and works well in all conditions. But it's great to have the software on my iPhone as well, because they stay in sync as far as which page I'm on. That way, if I'm just stealing a few minutes of reading time (waiting at a doctor's office for example), I can use the iPhone and still keep in sync.
I watch a lot of movies on the iPhone (lots of international travel), and it's great for that. But I'm not crazy about reading for a long time on the small screen.

From the "FYI" file: Amazon Remotely Deletes Purchased Copies of 1984 and Animal Farm From Thousands of Kindles
http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2009/07/kindlefinger.jpg (http://gizmodo.com/5317180/amazon-remotely-deletes-legitimately-purchased-books-from-thousands-of-kindles)
I just ordered my first kindle, and it comes tomorrow! I am very excited!
I am not going to use it really to read best sellers, but for my school books. I have 5,901 pages of assigned reading so far this semester, and much of it is avalible on the kindle. More importantly, though - almost 1,000 of those pages are on PDF's, so either I could print that all out (I can print 800 pages free with my tuition, but its not enough and a total waste of paper) or I can email it to the kindle DX I just bought and read them on there, plus that way I have them all in one place for easy reference.
I will let you know what I think when it comes, but I am pretty sure its gonna be wonderful! :)
Oh, one more thing - I get AWFUL migranes from looking at screens and reading, which is why the iPod touch wouldn't cut it. I have used the kindle once and the paper display was just as easy (maybe easier, cause you can turn the font size up) to read as a paper book. That's why I'm getting it and not just reading on an iPod or laptop. Utility.

Kindle isn't available here yet in Canada Pete but Sony's e-reader is.
Assuming that the tech is relatively the same (based on my readings it is)
Here is my take.
I love it
I have read over 100 novels on mine and never had any issues. Typically when the family goes out in the RV I am the last one in bed, this is when I enjoy my cigar by the fire so I read. I will read between 3 and 5 novels on a 10 day camping trip so carrying them can be a pain. The reader maintains its charge easily for that time.
I also use it at home and it sits on my nightstand. I have used it for a couple of reference books on some things as well and it is great to be able to mark, highlight etc.
I have experienced zero eyestrain or discomfort etc, it reads like a book. The text is crisp and clear (no pixelation on the edges)
It can if you want hold some music or photos as I understand but I have never used this feature.
I have no complaints on Sony's library and it is much smaller than the kindles so I am sure there will be no shortage of material.
The controls are simple and reasonable well placed and make for simple reading the controls on both units (I have used a Kindle a while back) do not interfere with the reading.
Once you are engrossed in the book it is just that another book the reader does not take away from the experience, it also doesn't add to it.
As to reading on anything else computer or ipod etc the Kindle nor the e reader has a backlight and it uses a different technology to render print. It is typically the backlight that causes people issue that nad the frequency of refresh issues, my understanding of kindle and reader is that it is a static screen once renedered. Again zero strain or headache issues.
To answer Darryls question think of it this way, no book means no paper which is more environmentally friendly. (Sorry to my friends in the lumber industry)
Based on these entries into the market I suspect it will be only a matter of a few years that this medium will take over the book industry. For the nay sayers out there look at what has happened to the newspaper industry.
Hope that was helpful.

Alright after 24 hours of use and about three hundred pages read, here are my thoughts.
This thing is AWESOME!
Screen is perfect - looks just like paper! I get horrible migranes from screens and my eyes get tired from paper after fifty pages or so, and with this device I had neither problem! I love how simple it is to use and that you don't need a computer for drivers/software/etc. Very lightweight and portable, and the books I bought were all a dollar a piece! (Dostoevsky, Gogol, Pushkin, Piper so far) If you are looking for more popular contemporary writing, its a bit more, but nothing that I saw was more than ten bucks. As long as you are within 3G network distance, books arrive in less than thirty seconds, and internet browsing isn't too slow. I also love the screen savers when you turn off the device! This thing is the best i've seen when it comes to functionality and portability tradeoffs!
Draw backs -
You are tethered to amazon, but they are pretty reasonable in their prices so i'm not too worried about that right now.
If you are not in 3G network range, the device falls back to 1RXTT and sucks battery about four times as much. I would recommend turning off wireless (really easy to do) when you are not using it.
Emailing yourself PDF's costs about fifteen cents a piece, but you can always just hook the kindle up to your computer and put PDF's on that way. It shows up as an external hard drive.
Internet is VERY basic. Looks like you are browsing on a cell phone. That having been said - it works for news, wikipedia, basic email, and even browsing CA!
Keyboard takes a few minutes to get used to, but its fine after you figure it out.
Final thoughts: GO GET ONE!

Peter, are you only interested in the Kindle, or in an ebook generally?
Have you considered the new Sony models that at about to hit the shelves that will connect to your local library and "check out" books for free?
From what I've been reading these could be better than the kindles
Since I'll be travelng more in my current job I've been thinking about getting one myself, but am interested in hearing the kindle feedback
have to say though, they look like something someone cobbed together in their basement back in 1950, one ugly ass piece of hardware:r

It will be interesting to see what the new Sony looks like. I have been watching closely but I get the feeling that this will open up into something larger over the next two years. Having said that I have a hard time dropping 300-400 on one now and the whole model change over in the next year. Google seems like they are out and about playing in ebooks also which I would say may means a reader from them in the near futre or they may throw their weight behind Sony or Amazon.

I would own one if I could connect to their wireless network here in northern Vermont. Unfortunately it is Sprint with no service locally. I am eagerly awaiting the Plastic Logic (http://www.plasticlogic.com) reader. It is suposed to be 8 1/2 x 11, touch screen, same display as the Kindle, content partners Barnes & Noble and Google Books, (yielding much more content than Amazon) and wireless downloads via the AT&T network which works very well here in the north country. In the meantime I trudge to the library and the bookstore.

Very Interesting. There's going to be a lot of ereaders hitting the shelves this holiday season.
It's unclear, or I didn't see either way, if the Nook is tied to B&N the same way that the Kindle is tied to Amazon. If so, that's a deal killer for me. The move is away from that and towards allowing content from various providers, in various formats. Just something to keep in mind.

I wouldn't be surprised. I did see that you are supposed to be able to download some of the free books from google.
Another feature is that you can lend books to friends for a while. I think two weeks.
"3. More Books: B&N offers more titles than Amazon, plus the Nook can access 500,000 public domain titles from Google that are not available to Kindle users. The Nook will load and read Adobe Acrobat PDF documents, which the Kindle does not do."

I am looking at the Kindle for my wife for Christmas and maybe the Nook for myself since I have a lot of PDF ebooks already. Both are priced the same right now, but the holiday competition is heating up.
Another thing to consider with the Kindle, is that there is also a (free) iPhone app for catching up on a few pages when you don't have your kindle with you. The cool part is the "whispersync" technology that keeps the current page in sync between the iphone app and the Kindle itself.
Though I wouldn't want to read an entire book on the iPhone, this capability is very handy.

I currently do a lot of reading on my iPhone.
I used to read on my Palm Pilot, so the screen is actually a bit larger.
You get used to it. I normally read during my lunch, so it is quite handy.

I absolutely love my Kindle. The only negative thing I have to say about it is that it isn't possible to share purchased books.

Me too. I actually held the iPhone up to a paperback for comparison. With the margins on the book, etc, the amount of readin real estate between the two was almost e xactly the same

Ken, b&n has an iPhone app as well which I'm sure will work in similar fashion with their Nook. My concern with the kindle, other than it's fugliness, and lukewarm reviews, is the proprietary scheme Amazon has for it.
The new readers coming out are going to be a lot
more versatile. As is usually the case in tech, first doesn't always mean best, and frequently winds up meaning worst

Absolutely correct. :tpd:
I have been waiting for Kindle alternatives since it originally came out. The primary reason I have not bought one yet is that their over the air service is through Sprint and I just don't get Sprint coverage where I live. I plan on taking a good hard look at B&N's Nook as I believe its' service is through AT&T, but am also intrigued by Que (http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/19/plastic-logic-teases-que-proreader-with-8-5-x-11-inch-touchscree/) from Plastiic Logic. It features an 81/2 X 11 screen and though the first offering will be black & white, they claim a full color e-ink display is "just around the corner". Unfortunately it is not coming out until early 2010.

The new International version of the Kindle has Whispernet provided by AT&T and its global roaming partners.

Thanks.
I have read alot of great things about the newer kindles, also you can download books for free on the net and not having to pay an arm and a leg for them. This is actually on my xmas list for my girl so I would advise getting a newer generation one due to add on storage and battery life.

Nook was first to be eliminated for me. It came down to Kindle vs. Sony for me.
Some major down-sides of the Nook for me were:
Return policy - 14 day w/ 10% restocking fee. (Kindle and Sony are 30 day w/full refund)
B&N gift cards cannot be used to purchase e-books for the Nook. Huge issue if you ask me.
Cost of books were equal or greater then Kindle/Sony.

I didn't know about the gift card restrictions. I redeem my credit card points for gift cards, so that would be an issue for me also.
The one feature that still draws me to the Nook is the ability to loan e-books to another user. There were several of us in the desert with Kindles and I would have liked to be able to pass a book to one of them when I finished with it.
That feature is only useful if several of your friends have a Nook, otherwise it's a non-issue. Since I don't know anyone who has pre-ordered one, I'll probably get her a Kindle.
Kindle's software upgrade allows for the viewing of .pdfs in their native format now. That was another point of the Nook that was appealing that is now not an issue.

Also, the lending feature of the Nook is good for one user for 14 days only. Lend a book to friend - you can't lend that book again to anyone else - ever.

This kind of stuff makes me 50 x less likely to buy a kindle. As I understand it Amazon had no choice - they had to comply with the law and any of the e-reader vendors would have to do the same thing should a similar situation arise in the future.

I ordered one in the middle of November and it's supposed to ship December 11. Looks like the pre-orders they're taking now, though, won't ship until January.
From a quick search, it appears as though they sold out the initial production run on November 20, so any orders placed after that will be shipped later.

Not to perpetuate the scare but Barnes & Noble is on shaky ground. The future of the company was one of many reasons I eliminated the Nook early on. A couple of other big show stoppers for me were only a 14 day return policy with a 10% restocking fee. Sony and Amazon is a 30 day full refund. B&N e-books are generally more expensive and B&N will not allow the use of their own gift cards to purchase their own e-books. WTF is up with that?!?!?!!?
I truly hope your girlfriend likes her Nook. It just didn't cut it for me.

I was some kind of pissed as it was for my Wife for Christmas and January is a bit late and they would have my money for a month. After a number of weeks of agony, I have decided I need to sell my kindle. I absolutely love it, but the books I am reading are exclusively scholarly works, and apart from my Dostoevsky class nothing is really available for Kindle. Furthermore, the texts I am reading for my academic pursuits are things that I would like to keep, mark up, reference, etc in the future in my Masters/PhD programs and therefore I think I should invest in real, physical paper. :tu I'm gonna post the sale on Craigslist, not sure it would be an appropriate use of the board to post it here. Anyway another bump for an awesome product if you are looking to fly through books and not worry about having them in the future for reference. I read more and faster with the kindle, and I'm sad to see it go! Its just an expensive paperweight, ya know? Plus I could buy probably ten scholarly works that I would use over and over for the price of the kindle...

I am not by nature an ebook person, but this thread made me go out and borrow the most recent model from a friend to try out.
Honestly, I was not impressed. I could not get over the "gadget" feel as some others have described. I constantly felt like I was playing with a video game.
The prices for things that interested me where actually more expensive than hard copies of the books (7.19 for The Bear & the Dragon by Tom Clancy). I can hunt around online and come up with a paperback copy of that book for a dollar. Also, as I understand (correct me if I'm wrong here please!) but if you decide to get rid of the Kindle, you're out however much you spent on the books, and you don't have the books in hand.
The battery needed a charge somewhere between the 700-800 page range, but I can't be sure if it was a full charge when I borrowed it. If that is a full charge, I'd say that's a rather low capacity for someone with time to read and who reads quickly.
Also, I'm somewhat of a speed reader. Maybe it's just my eyes, but I constantly had to go back and re-read something because I wasn't sure if I had read it correctly. That's something I NEVER have to do with a hard copy.
I think, given enough time (I only read one book, even if it was 1000+ pages) I could develop a tolerance for reading on a Kindle, but my initial trial run didn't sufficiently impress me enough to give me a solid reason for buying one.
Obviously, others here would get more use out of it for the physical or electronic benefits, but I don't see spending 250 on a Kindle as a wise investment as of now.

It reads .pdf materials, does audio books and looks like a regular book especially with the grayscale and lighting that makes it look like you're reading a book. If you don't turn the wifi on, battery really lasts.
Then I started seeing the IPADs and other ebook readers like Nook Color. I decided to give my kindle to a relative when I was in Manila. I bought a Nook and although it's colored and tochscreen with internet access, I miss the kindle.

I took a long look at the original Kindle when it first came out and decided to not be an early adopter for once. When the Kindle 2 arrived I was sorely tempted, but was also intrigued by the Ipad for the increased funcionality. Unfortunately the Ipad is still using an LCD screen and it becomes tiresome to read after a while. I took a long look at the Nook color in a Barnes & Noble store and feel that the LCD screen has the same inadequacies as the Ipad. The technology that really intrigues me in the Notion Ink Adam (http://www.notionink.in/). It features a Pixel Qi screen that offers the best of e-paper and LCD in one. Notion Ink is an Indian startup that just started shipping the Adam this week. Their pre-orders are all sold out. I am awaiting some reviewers actualy getting production units in their hands to see an in-depth, hands-on review. If that goes as well as early quickie reviews indicate I will probably be getting one of these once they become more available.

My mom got a Kindle for Christmas. I was blown away at that e-ink screen. Very cool. I know that CRT monitors/TVs cause eye strain for a number of reasons, low refresh rate, radiation, and due to a false focal point. Your eyes actually focus on a point well behind the screen. LCDs are much better, no radiation, better focal point but not perfect. I think this e-ink screen has no different focal point than paper with ink print on it, plus you don't have to worry about ambient light. Very cool stuff.

I've learned a lot in the last few weeks. Found other search engines and a couple of sites that have a lot of books (many are free).
But the real sweet "tip" is the hack for the screensavers. Now I can look at pictures of family and friends instead of Virginia Woolf and other dead authors.
I will post details soon.

I did a lot of research and was intrigued by the Notion Ink Adam, but have cooled on it because of software, shipping and quality issues that have been reported.
My big hangup with the Kindle has been the propriatory format that they use for their books, I prefer a more open approach. Yesterday I got an e-mail notification for a refurbished original Nook for $89.99 from Buy.com and pulled the trigger. Figured I couldn't go wrong at that price and I already had a Nook account that I have used to download books onto my Android phone. Looking forward to less trips to the library.

Here are the two links to create your own Kindle screen savers.
http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88004
You will need two zip files from the attachment in the first post
1) kindle-jailbreak-0.6.N.zip is to install the jailbreak
2) kindle-ss-0.20.N.zip is to install the screen saver hack.

This link has detailed instructions on how to make it happen.

Here is some great resources that were given to me by Ron (RGD.)
I have registered for and am using Smashwords. :tu
I have not yet looked into the others.
First up is a web site called Smashwords (https://www.smashwords.com) that has a short and painless registration that you will want to do. They have a ton of free books with new ones added almost daily in addition to ones to pay for. They have best sellers and original author books as I call them. Now the good thing about Smashwords is that you can download them to your computer and then transfer to Kindle. So if you are so inclined - you could give a copy to someone else, especially the free ones. The site is on the honor system in that they ask if you plan on giving a copy to others (paid for books) that you pay for the extra copy.
Next up is Ereader News Today (http://ereadernewstoday.com). What works best for me is this: sign up on the EreaderNewsToday Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/EreaderNewsToday) page. Click on the "Like" button. Now each day, sometimes three or four times, they will post in the feed about free books and/or really cheap books. At times you can get $10 to $25 books for under $2 to about 89 cents. They also post links on their website.
Now these books are either linked to Amazon which will download as usual to your Kindle. Or - there are links to the Smashwords site listed above - hence the reason to sign up there. There will be a code on the Ereader site with the link. Use that code to make the books free. Just click and follow, add to cart, insert the code, click update, and then check out. Follow the link, select Mobi and download.
Good for about 20 to 25 free books each week.
ManyBooks. (http://www.manybooks.net) This site has about 29,000 books - and they are all free. Nothing to sign up for. These books are cached actually on Amazon's S3 service. Short version is that sometimes you may request a book that takes a while to download - because it is being encoded - but will be really quick for everyone else. One cool thing on this site is that they have an RSS feed.
And lastly- Feedbooks.com (http://www.feedbooks.com/) They have a store, public domain and original books that are free. Honestly I have been there, looked around, bookmarked it but with the above sites and my newsgroup feeds - I will be saving it for when I get the time. Good looking site though.

I got my wife a Kindle 3 and she loved it so much that I got one for my mom and myself. I find I read much faster on my kindle than I do on a normal book. In fact the first ten days I read three novels.
I use the iPhone app a lot at work so I don't have to tote my Kindle to work and sync the last page so I can pick it up again at home. It's a great device!
I love the zombie fiction genre and there's quite a lot of zombie fic stories available for 2.99 or less:)

Kellie - Many people find the lack of it being backlit as a problem or fault. But the whole purpose of the e-ink technology is to be less of a strain on the eyes than a laptop/iPad/computer. Also, it is no different than reading a regular book at night. One needs light to read.
Also, I find the e-ink much easier to read outdoors during the day than a backlit computer screen.
My :2 and worth as much.

What if all I want is an eReader?
Besides, the Nook Color was not around when I bought my Kindle in December of 2009.
I'm not saying it is not a good thing, Steve. I'm perfectly happy with the Kindle.

I'm with you, I love my Kindle and don't want it to do anything but give me great books to read. I appreciate the links you posted, I just got mine this past Christmas and have not had much time to play with it.
Just a suggestion to read, if you haven't already..."The Cigar MAker" I'm reading it now, it's a great book.

The other great thing is that we don't need to worry about glare as much with e-ink :D I bought a KoBo for $70 and it's exactly what I needed for reading books and nothing else. I've got an android phone that I upgrade every 2 years that can do everything else. I would love the back lighting option but I can live with having a $10 book light and $70 eReader.

I love my Nook. M wife had to use a Kindle for class, and liked my Nook better.
Mine is not the color one, and it isn't a replacement for my computer. It is for portable books to take with me instead of a huge library in a briefcase. As a pastor, that is huge.
I wouldn't mind an IPad, but for different purposes.
