View Full Version : Craigslist SCAM! Nothing new...just a heads' up

So I've been listing some furniture on Craigslist. A lot. We're remodeling a few rooms in our house in preparation for the baby & we need to get rid of a lot of stuff.
And Craigslist has been great; we even sold our front door (right off the bat)!
But there are scammers out there and I just thought you all should know and I didn't see anything on the forum about this so I thought I'd share with you my recent experiences.
After posting our ads, we quickly get emails from all sorts of gmail accounts (or even yahoo accounts that are actually gmail accounts - not sure how that happens) asking if the item or items are still for sale.
Hello? I JUST posted the ad....of course it's for sale.
But that's how they get 'ya and your actual personal email address. The first email from them comes to you via craigslist so they don't actually have your personal addy off the bat.
But that's not really the problem, but if you're desperate enough (watch it), you might just fall for the scam. I have a buddy who did and it wasn't fun and he was out a chunk of change.
This is an example of the email I get in response to the ad (with Craigslist's automatic warning at the top):
** CRAIGSLIST ADVISORY --- AVOID SCAMS BY DEALING LOCALLY
** Avoid: wiring money, cross-border deals, work-at-home
** Beware: cashier checks, money orders, escrow, shipping
** More Info: http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams.html
hello
is will like to know if the posted adds is still up for sale??????
Now I'm not sure exactly what this guy is asking......but I think he's asking me if it's still for sale.
And the email address that shows up is: Grant Seth [tolozolo4@yahoo.com]
But then when I reply, it switches to mloveth@gmail.com. TRICKY!
This is the response I get to my personal address after I responded saying, yes, of course, it's still for sale:
Thank for the prompt response my secretary will process and mail a certified draft to cover the cost as am completely satisfied with it.I will need the details of whom & where to mail the payment 1.Name to be on the check 2.Home address 3.Mobile # preferably Please note 'United Parcel Service' do not deliver to P.O.Box addresses and i will not be mailing a draft to one.My mover will be coming over for the pick up right only after the payment as been delivered.Kindly delete the posting as am totally committed to buying from you to save cost,..Here is my relay phone # is (210) 209-8524 am deaf and will receive your phone messages via email , regards
Here's the scam: they send you a fake check. You cash it. For the first week or two, all seems good & the 'mover' comes and picks up the item. Later on, you get a nifty little call from your bank telling you that the funds actually weren't available even though the funds were initially deposited into your account. So you don't get your money and you've already given away yer goods.
So far, I've received about 30 of these scam emails so far. So I've started having some fun with it. So I invite you too to send all sorts of spam to these addresses and call that number. It'll be fun.
Here's my response to the above email:
I will need your full name & address first. Better yet, please provide me with your Driver's License & Social Security Number.
And I will be reporting you.
Here's another email I got from chrismarcus024@gmail.com
Hello,

I will be paying via cashier's check, you don't need to bother your self with the shipment Ok,i will take care of that.So i will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check.
1.Your full name
2.Your mailing address
3.Your phone number.
I will have my mover come over as soon as you have the check

Chris
This was my response:
Why don’t you provide me with your name & address first, if we’re trusting each other here…in fact, you sound really nice Chris, I really like nice boys…are you a nice boy? Why don’t I come over.
How nice of him, though, to offer an extra $20! Seriously, who would do that if it wasn't an obvious scam?
Here's another from christjomo@googlemail.com (which definitely isn't gmail):

My response:
Hi Donald - Due to the many scams on Craigslist and these specific demands you are making, I will only accept ****** from you. I will be happy to have the shelf professionally packaged and shipped to you using my local shipping agent, however, the piece is a bit large and awkwardly shaped so packaging and shipping will be $200. If you'd like to continue, ****** me at ------- the total amount of $699 including shipping and provide me with your address. I hope you understand and I look forward to doing business with you.

And my response:
Mike, I apologize but your email is not very clear.
I am selling a large, gold framed beveled mirror for $899. It is not a cabinet. I also do not understand when you say that I will send money.
The mirror is $899 and you will have to either arrange for shipping yourself or pay for me to have it packaged and shipped to you.
In order for me to consider the item sold to you, you will need to send to me $899 plus $100 for shipping if I am to arrange the shipping for you.
David
Gotta love the internet!!! Just be careful fellas and ladies!

Piece of advice from someone who investigates this stuff. If you receive a check/cheque, always have the bank clear it right then and there. If possible, use a draft/certified check.
In response to your use of a personal email account, PLEASE go register a GMail account that will let you stay anonymous. Beat them at their own game my friend.

Thanks Donnie! By the way, is your email addy donaldwell1@gmail.com?
:r:r
Also, I've heard that these checks actually ARE certified cashier's checks...they're no longer safe either.
And hey, how do I register my gmail addy as anonymous?
And Michael, it really is a great website...we've sold stuff, even rented out a home using craigslist! Three times!
Just be careful of the scammers...and most of them, I've heard, are (obviously) out of the country, in Africa somewhere (so I've heard).
This post is worth RG just for the laughs it gave me. I am a pretty cynical person, so not readily trapped by scams. Not sure what that says about me that I don't trust people, but my money and goods stay safe. Thanks for the post.

Hahahaha, thanks Mike. I'm the same way. That's why when a guy says right off the bat...I'll pay you full price, hell, I'll throw in an extra $20....it looks like a freakin' duck to me!
If it's too good to be true....well, hell....

When I say "anonymous", anyone you converse with will not be able to trace your email back to you (save and except LE and organizations like mine). Register a dozen gmail accts and mix them up. Would be difficult for anyone to gather substance on you.

As for certified checks not being safe, well that is true to a degree. But in that case, its the banks problem if they don't check it right away. I see hundreds of fake certified checks being passed everyday on our news ticker, that is basically hundreds of bank tellers that are slacking off (no offence).
EDIT: Here is a sample notice we get...
CNB Bank, Inc., Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, has contacted the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to report that counterfeit cashier's checks bearing the institution's name are in circulation.
The counterfeit items display the routing number 052204359, which is assigned to CNB Bank, Inc. The items also display a security feature statement embedded in the top border and along the bottom border between two padlocks. The words "CASHIER'S CHECK" along with a notice to customers appears in the top-left corner. The name Citizens National Bank with a "C" logo is displayed in the top center.
Authentic cashier's checks display the bank's name and location in the top-center area of the check. The words "Cashier's Check" are shown in the top-right area of the check.

Anyone dumb enough to fall for such shenanigans deserves exactly what they get. Hang on... I'm running low on cynicism, but if your :bs detector doesn't start making noise, you should probably move back to your parents basement and have all electronic devices restricted from use.
Not you, David, but PUUUUHLEEEAAASSSE.... I have had dozens of these come at me, and if they aren't specifically referring to your item, 99% of the time they are the cousins of the Nigerian Lottery official, I think. ;)

Totally agree with you Pete. One of my replies that I didn't post here went sorta like this, including the Craigslist warning at the top: "Do you think I'm stupid? I'm reporting you." And that buddy of mine who actually fell for it, well, he ain't too smart....

I had a moron friend who got scammed over craiglist when posting an ad for a roommate.
I never paid much attention to it till he started talking about 'extra' money he was getting out of the deal. I immediately asked him to fill me in. Turns out the girl was from 'far away' and 'moving here soon' and 'here's a check for $XXXX.00 to go towards rent for the first few months... be sure to take what you need plus a little extra and mail me back the rest...
Typical scam... he had no idea. He cashed the check. I stopped him the night he was writing a check back. He still wasn't believing me..... then 2 days later his accounts were frozen by the bank. :r

I once tried to sell a motorcycle through an online ad service (not CL) and had a similar experience. The guy offered me $1000 dollars over what I asked for the bike, and an additional $2500 to have it shipped. I wound up getting a huge check that the bank wouldn't clear because it was fake (had major suspicions long before I got the check in my hands). The guy called up, through an operator he was typing to, and threatened to find me and do me harm in order to get his money back. He didn't like it too much when I told him I didn't have the check anymore because the local police had taken the check and passed it on to the FBI. He hung up after that.

Anytime you post something in Craigslist you are open to this kind of Scam. Here's the usual modus operandi:
You are the seler
1. Response to your advertisement.
2. Email back and forth. They say their representative/secretary/relative in the USA will send you payments.
3. They send you a check for more than what was originally agreed upon. They say take xxx amount for your trouble but refund (via wire transfer) them the remaining money.
Ex Cost of what you are selling is 1000 dollars
They send you 3500 dollars
They will ask you to cash the check, take 300 dollars for your troubles but send them/advance them 1200.
4. Your bank will make the 3500 available to you. You wire them 1200.
5. A few days later your bank calls you and informs you the check is no good. You are now out of 1200.
You are the buyer - This is easy to spot since most of the time, the same advertisement is plastered in different craigslist cities.
1. You email them about the item they are selling.
2. They said it's available. However, he is out of country right now but, lo and behold, he has a solution for this problem.
3. They will suggest to use a shipper company; in one of my bait, they suggested TNT.
4. Same deal with above, take xxx amount for your trouble, but wire them the rest.

Nice! Jeez, sorry about that Joe. That sucks. Hope they caught the f'er.
The whole thing smelled kinda funky. The guy was supposedly based out of South Africa, the shipping company was based in Ghana, and the Cashier's Check was from a bank in the UK. Requested that they clear funds before I left the bank and it came back as being fraudulent. The routing number was correct, but the account number didn't exist. Crazy deal, but I didn't lose anything other than a little time. The entertainment I got was well worth that much.

The wife and I have used Craigslist before and understand what we were in for. Tons of replies from deadbeat scam artists who kept up with their ruse. We had one girl from New Mexico send a cashiers check to us,,,but we gave her the address of the Chief of Police in our city with his real name. These people are always using "agents" and stories about their sick family members to try and get you to trust them,,,,as if they are really human beings who care,,,please! I had one person who used AOL as their address and I caught them on AIM and started talking to them as to why they are scamming people,,,they were very truthful and told me the reason they do this is because they hate Americans and they were doing this from another country. They kept saying that they are a very organized group of people who's sole purpose is to scam Americans out of their money,,,nothing more and nothing less.

They do that because they keep a file on all of the "scams they are running" and don't want to send duplicate responses to their targets,,,,they know it looks shady when they are trying to scam you and it appears as if they forget that they have been talking with you and send you another email like it was the first time they responded back to you.

Ah! I didn't think of that either! Although it's obvious the same guy is emailing me about every item I've posted and often confuses the 'item' for a cabinet even though it's clearly a BIG-A$$ mirror so it's obvious the guys are carpet-bombing with abandon. It's a shock they even care if you take it down or not.

Yeah, it's like playing with yourself after awhile. I just completely stopped communicating with these idiots when I see stuff. They could really care less what you think of them,,,,they are a very organized and relentless lot of parasites whose sole purpose is to seperate you from your money. You can tell a lot from how they write their emails to you as to whether this is a scam or not and it's a "boiler room" set up they have. These idiots hardly deviate from their scam in how they write their letters and they always use the same type of banter,,,,they are from the Midwest,,,they have sick relatives,,,they always have a shipper or agent that is going to set up the payments,,,yadda yadda.
I even told one scammer ( after they sent the check to me ) that I was not going to send the money to them until I met with them personally and I also told them that the check they sent to me was cashed at one of those places that charge 10% to cash checks like they sent. ( They sent a check for $2000 to cover the cost of the item plus they overpaid $1500 so they could get the money back from me,,,supposedly because I'm an idiot and wouldn't think twice bout sending them $1,000 back while keeping the extra $500 for my trouble ,,,,yeah right) When they found out I cashed their fake check ( which I really didn't,,,just said it so it would piss em off ) they were all over me like a white on rice to send them their share of the money. I kept answering that I just couldn't send that kind of money thru the mail so if they wanted it they would have to send their agent to meet me on a certain day at a certain place and I'd give em the money. They never answered me back about it,,shucks,,,otherwise I'd have involved the police in a sting operation.

And he responded:
Hello,
Thanks for getting back to my mail,i would be buying and love to come down for a look but i'm not idle at the moment, because i'm indulging in my office assignment, but am satisfy with the description and the condition you gave on the website.i would like to make an outright purchase immediately.i will be glad if you can withdraw the advert placement from the website and will like you to know that i will be sending the payment for the item with a certified bank check or cashier's check in (US dollars) for the reason that i'm busy to come for the item and i will like you to please bear with me.And as for the pick up of the item i will know how to handle that with my mover. As soon as you cash the payment in check, the mover will come for the pick up,all you need to do is mail me and give me the description to your place to make it easier for the mover to come and do the pick up.I do not want you to look for another buyer and i will be greteful if you withdraw the advert from the website, and i don't mind giving you extra $50 for withdrawing the advert from the web.In order for you to know that I'm really serious in purchasing your item.I will send you the payment as soon as you give me the info to write the check. i would need your name and address to post the payment and i'll appreciate if you include your 1...Your name 2...Your postal address 3...your zip code 4...mobile phone number Home or work address thanks and i'll be expecting your reply.

Just be careful of the scammers...and most of them, I've heard, are (obviously) out of the country, in Africa somewhere (so I've heard).
Probably Nigerians, they are famous for internet scams, and a large group of them does 'business' from Amsterdam. Every once in a while there is a police sweep through that area, but deport 10 of those illigal scammers and 25 come back to replace them.
What about accepting the check and ship a box full of garbage?

Subject: RE: Exquisite French Baby
You do realize that I am selling a French baby, don't you? It is a human baby & cannot be shipped by any mover or shipping agent. Well, at least not for an additional fee. Like at least $5 more. Know that I am motivated to sell it though!!! The exquisite French baby continuously cries & cries and I haven't changed its diaper since I bought it a week ago from a trader in the West Indies. Frankly, I don't even know its sex so you are buying the baby regardless of sex. Thank you for your business! I will like you to furnish me with your name, address and phone number because a background check must be performed to know that you are a suitable parent for my French baby. When I purchased this baby a week ago I paid an extra $25 to waive the background check. Surely you don't want to have to pay the additional fee! It is expensive already, I know but will be well worth it. Imagine the money you can make if the exquisite French baby turns out to be a pretty girl! Hopefully the cleft palate will be fixed by the time she is older and of serviceable age. By purchasing this exquisite French baby, I will no longer be legally responsible for any of its misdoings. Don't be fooled, this baby is one hell of a thief! I had a girlfriend 3 days ago but this exquisite French baby stole her heart and my girlfriend no longer loves me! Also, the exquisite French baby stole $50 from me so I request that you make a payment of an additional $50 to me for this money that it owes me. I'm sorry to trouble you with all these complications; I guarantee that you will be happy with this exquisite French baby. Although again, I will also not be financially responsible for it from the moment you come to pick it up. And I don't know anything about the exquisite French baby's involvement in the robbery of a Cayman offshore bank in the case somebody may coming looking.
Thanks again for your speedy purchase of the item! You are excellent customer!

I told him $20,000 and gave him a PO box to ship the cashiers check to. I gave him a fake name. About two weeks later I got a $20k Wachovia cashiers check in the mail made out to Holden McGroin. He wanted me to deposit the check, get a $3000 cashiers check and send it back to him so he could pay the shipper. He said when they came to pick up the bike they would have another cashiers check for the balance. Needless to say I told him lick my nads.

Hello
I m grateful that the item is still available, and thank for quick response and i will like to let you know i will love to make an instant purchase, so please i will love you to withdraw the posting from Craiglist, and for you to know how much i m interested in this, i will like to add $50.00 for taking down the posting from Craiglist so that i can be rest assured that the item is in my possession and i will also like to add that i will be paying via check and it will be overnight payment due to the distance. You don't have to bother yourself with the shipment OK, i will make preparation for that.So i will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check.
1.Your full name 2. Your mailing address (residential or Postal address) 3. Your phone number.
Once again I will like you to know that you will not be responsible for shipping...i will have my mover come over as soon as you have cashed the check. Thanks.
I really think we should start carpet bombing these guys with various responses....like copy & paste this response from him/her/it and then put in all kinds of funky stuff in the subject lines. Subject: RE: 2 Caucasian Children for Sale
Hi grateful Alexander! I am very excited (grateful too!) that you love me! I love you too! You are already too kind to instantly purchase my 2 Caucasian children but also to offer an additional $50.00! You should know that I’m interested in you too! Like really. I’m awful lonely. Okay, so I was about to tell you that a check would be great, but maybe if you could, add an extra $700 for my trouble. I know it’s a lot to ask but I swear it will be worth it. These 2 Caucasian children have really given me a lot of trouble in the last 24 hours from your first reply to my listing (I’m actually a little surprised you still want them) and I’ve had to severely reprimand them. Rest assured, I only beat myself and I must admit that I really felt quite terrible about this and spent the last 8 hours getting some wonderful treatment at the local spa as a result. They even have a massaging saddle there that I highly recommend. I will tell you more in my 27th correspondence to you. I will hold out for then; you just have to wait! I also had to seek therapy from a very well known celebrity therapist. Perhaps you have heard of him! His name is Dr. Phil. I’m not sure if he has a last name but you could look him up if you need therapy. You may have seen him on T.V. so you could recognize him if he walks down the street. You could stop him and ask him how to better purchase items on the internet! Dr. Phil is much taller in person! And only slightly a jackass. But he really helped me deal with my issues about scolding the 2 Caucasian children (I mean your 2 Caucasian children) and so I immediately went home and took them out of the washing machine. They were dirty little children! I really appreciate that I don’t have to bother with the shipping, shipping scares me!! One time, when I was a baby, my mother shipped me to Africa, it was not funny at all. When they found me and returned me to her arms (which were NOT open I must admit; it too makes me sad…but do not cry), she was laughing I am told. Laughing! She was having party and somebody told joke but it doesn’t matter. I am SERIOUS!
I must admit, however, that I don’t quite understand the logistics of your request. You said, “so that i can be rest assured that the item is in my possession”. I’m confused because the 2 Caucasian children are in my possession, not yours. I just don’t understand.
You also mention that you feel a great distance already growing between us. I’m hurt by this. Really and if you don’t stop that, I will have to ask you for more than $700 extra because Dr. Phil is not cheap. How can we possibly have a mature relationship when you are so distant!!!??? Please stop playing games with my heart. And also the heart of the 2 Caucasian children for sale.
Please email me back so that I know we still have a deal because you must know how much I’m interested in this to work (just like you!) then I can give you my address, lover. I promise I am not just shy.
Oh, and about your mover…I was just curious if he is a shaker too? It might damage the 2 Caucasian children if he is. Again, I really appreciate (because I am a scared!) that you will take care of me like you have promised. That really shows me that you care! THANK YOU!!!
Biggest smooches,
Blixa

You don't have to bother yourself with the shipment OK, i will make preparation for that.So i will need you to provide me with the following information to facilitate the mailing of the check.

Will you take $200 for it?

I might have been an a$$, when I wrote in response:
You’re kidding, right?
Sorry, we are asking $2,000 for it.
And then my buddy messes with me, finds the ad & writes me through Craigslist :r:r:
Hello sir,

Please tell to me if I can serve tea on this table or will it collapse under the pressures? I enjoy beverages and like to use this for many thing (also hot dog)(with chili).
My shipping agent will arive your home with peni$ sticking out of zipper. That way you will know this is correct shipping agent and not imposter. If any shipping agent arrive WITHOUT exposed penile tissue DO NOT GIVE HIM TABLE. I love you to provide me with coaster for beverage. Also 2 napkin.
Please you will send me a bank wire for $2.8 million and I will send you the money back. Then we will know we are both honest persons and can do business.
I look forward to drinking my tea (and eating chili hot dog) on your table after my exposed peni$ shipping agent deliver it to my shack in Nigeria... eh... I mean my mansion in Beverly Hill.
I love you to remove the listing and send wire.

Hey, 90% off on that coffee table would be a killer deal, obviously you're not a motivated seller.

I bet you've struggled to type out some of these replies through chuckling away to yourself. Great thread!
There's a classified advert site in the UK where they scam folks out of "delivery" fee's for parrots, monkeys and other rare expensive animals (they normally advertise very low prices for them to suck folks in) so for a bit of fun I post my own "scam warning..read this" adverts pretty often.
I've even had the cheeky fookers write to me asking me to stop placing the scam warning adverts as they are losing money! The nerve of some people!
mrreindeer - that's some of the funniest stuff I've read in a long time. Nice work!
